In this paper, we investigate a reaction-diffusion model incorporating dynamic variables for nutrient, phytoplankton, and zooplankton. Moreover, we account for the impact of time delay in the growth of phytoplankton following nutrient uptake. Our theoretical analysis reveals that the time delay can trigger the emergence of persistent oscillations in the model via a Hopf bifurcation. We also analytically track the direction of Hopf bifurcation and the stability of the bifurcating periodic solutions. Our simulation results demonstrate stability switches occurring for the positive equilibrium with an increasing time lag. Furthermore, the model exhibits homogeneous periodic-2 and 3 solutions, as well as chaotic behaviour. These findings highlight that the presence of time delay in the phytoplankton growth can bring forth dynamical complexity to the nutrient-plankton system of aquatic habitats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An intraguild predator–prey model including prey refuge and hunting cooperation is investigated in this paper. First, for the corresponding ordinary differential equation model, the existence and stability of all equilibria are given, and the existence of Hopf bifurcation, direction and stability of bifurcating periodic solutions are investigated. Then, for partial differential equation model, the diffusion-driven Turing instability is obtained. What is more, the existence and non-existence of the non-constant positive steady state of the reaction–diffusion model are established by the Leray–Schauder degree theory and some priori estimates. Next, some numerical simulations are performed to support analytical results. The results showed that prey refuge can change the stability of model and even have a stabilizing effect on this model, meanwhile the hunting cooperation can make such model without diffusion unstable, but make such model with diffusion stable. In this paper, we are concerned with an epidemic model with quarantine and distributed time delay. We define the basic reproduction number R 0 and show that if R 0 ≤ 1 , then the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable, whereas if R 0 > 1 , then it is unstable and there exists a unique endemic equilibrium. We obtain sufficient conditions for a Hopf bifurcation that induces a nontrivial periodic solution which represents recurrent epidemic waves. By numerical simulations, we illustrate stability and instability parameter regions. In this paper, we consider a fear effect predator–prey model with mutual interference or group defense. For the model with mutual interference, we show the interior equilibrium is globally stable, and the mutual interference can stabilize the predator–prey system. For the model with group defense, we discuss the singular dynamics around the origin and the occurrence of Hopf bifurcation, and find that there is a separatrix curve near the origin such that the orbits above which tend to the origin and the orbits below which tend to limit cycle or the interior equilibrium. The goal of this paper is to investigate the influence of the waning immunity on the dynamics of Tilapia Lake Virus (TiLV) transmission in wild and farmed tilapia within freshwater. We formulate a model for which susceptible individuals can contract the disease in two ways: (i) direct mode caused by contact with infected individuals; (ii) indirect mode due to the presence of pathogenic agents in the water. We obtain an age-structured model which combines both age since infection and age since recovery. We derive an explicit formula for the reproductive number R 0 and show that the disease-free equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable when, R 0 < 1. We discuss on the form of the waning immunity parameter and show numerically that a Hopf bifurcation may occur for suitable immunity parameter values, which means that there is a periodic solution around the endemic equilibrium when, R 0 > 1. In this paper, we derive a delayed epidemic model to describe the characterization of cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL)-mediated immune response against virus infection. The stability of equilibria and the existence of Hopf bifurcation are analysed. Theoretical results reveal that if the basic reproductive number is greater than 1, the positive equilibrium may lose its stability and the bifurcated periodic solution occurs when time delay is taken as the bifurcation parameter. Furthermore, we investigate an optimal control problem according to the delayed model based on the available therapy for hepatitis B infection. With the aim of minimizing the infected cells and viral load with consideration for the treatment costs, the optimal solution is discussed analytically. In this paper, we introduce and deal with the delayed nutrient-microorganism model with a random network structure. By employing time delay τ as the main critical value of the Hopf bifurcation, we investigate the direction of the Hopf bifurcation of such a random network nutrient-microorganism model. Noticing that the results of the direction of the Hopf bifurcation in a random network model are rare, we thus try to use the method of multiple time scales (MTS) to derive amplitude equation and determine the direction of the Hopf bifurcation. It is showed that the delayed random network nutrient-microorganism model can exhibit a supercritical or subcritical Hopf bifurcation. This paper aims to analyse stability and Hopf bifurcation of the HIV-1 model with immune delay under the functional response of the Holling II type. The global stability analysis has been considered by Lyapunov–LaSalle theorem. And stability and the sufficient condition for the existence of Hopf Bifurcation of the infected equilibrium of the HIV-1 model with immune response are also studied. In this paper, a delayed human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) model with apoptosis of cells has been studied. Both immunological and intracellular delay have been incorporated to make the model more relevant. Firstly, the model has been investigated using local stability analysis. Next, the global stability analysis of steady states has been performed. The stability switch criteria taking the delay as the bifurcating parameter, leading to Hopf bifurcation has been studied. The transition of the system from order to chaos has been explored, and the analytical results have been verified by numerical simulations. The results thus can be used to describe the extensive dynamics exhibited by the model introduced in this article. The effects of apoptosis on viral load has been studied in the model numerically. In this paper, the dynamical behaviours for a five-dimensional virus infection model with three delays which describes the interactions of antibody, cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) immune responses and Beddington-DeAngelis incidence are investigated. The reproduction numbers for virus infection, antibody immune response, CTL immune response, CTL immune competition and antibody immune competition, respectively, are calculated. By using the Lyapunov functionals and linearization method, the threshold conditions on the local and global stability of the equilibria for infection-free, immune-free, antibody response, CTL response and interior, respectively, are established. In this paper, a delayed diffusive predator–prey model with schooling behaviour and Allee effect is investigated. The existence and local stability of equilibria of model without time delay and diffusion are given. Regarding the conversion rate as bifurcation parameter, Hopf bifurcation of diffusive system without time delay is obtained. In addition, the local stability of the coexistent equilibrium and existence of Hopf bifurcation of system with time delay are discussed. In this paper, we formulate a stage-structured predator–prey model with mutual interference, in which includes two discrete delays. By theoretical analysis, we establish the stability of the unique positive equilibrium and the existence of Hopf bifurcation when the maturation delay for predators is used as the bifurcation parameter. Our results exhibit that the maturation delay for preys does not affect the stability of the positive equilibrium. However, the maturation delay for predator is able to destabilize the positive equilibrium and causes periodic solutions. In this paper, we consider a system of delay differential equations that models the oncolytic virotherapy on solid tumours with the delay of viral infection in the presence of the innate immune response. We conduct qualitative and numerical analysis, and provide possible medical implications for our results. The system has four equilibrium solutions. Fixed point analysis indicates that increasing the burst size and infection rate of the viruses has positive contribution to the therapy. However, increasing the immune killing infection rate, the immune stimulation rate, or the immune killing virus rate may lead the treatment failed. The viral infection time delay induces backward Hopf bifurcations, which means that the therapy may fail before time delay increases passing through a Hopf bifurcation. The parameter analysis also shows how saddle-node and Hopf bifurcations occur as viral burst size and other parameters vary, which yields further insights into the dynamics of the virotherapy. A delayed SEIR epidemic model with saturated incidence and saturated treatment function is considered in this paper. Sufficient conditions for the existence of local Hopf bifurcation are established by regarding the possible combination of the two delays as the bifurcation parameter. We rewrite the model as an abstract non-densely defined Cauchy problem and obtain the condition which guarantees the existence of the unique positive steady state. By linearizing the model at steady state and analysing the associated characteristic transcendental equations, we study the local asymptotic stability of the steady state. Furthermore, by using Hopf bifurcation theorem in Liu et al., we show that Hopf bifurcation occurs at the positive steady state when bifurcating parameter crosses some critical values. In this paper, we analyze a mathematical model for an inflammatory response to bacterial infection of homogeneous tissues. Specifically, we provide a detailed analysis of the Lauffenburger-Kennedy bacterial infection model and show that the model exhibits three possible equilibria corresponding to a bacteria-free and two endemic compromised steady states. Asymptotic results of the steady states along with the existences of saddle-node connection Hopf bifurcations are shown under certain conditions of the parameters. Within the biological ranges of the parameter values, we observe that the system can exhibit both forward and backward bifurcation. In addition, in both cases, the larger compromise bacterial infection steady state can either approach an equilibrium or can oscillate around it via Hopf bifurcation depending on the value of the ratio of leukocyte mortality to phagocytosis rates. In this paper, we investigate a new alcoholism model in which alcoholics have age structure. In this paper, a predator-prey system with harvesting prey and disease in prey species is given. In the absence of time delay, the existence and stability of all equilibria are investigated. In the presence of time delay, some sufficient conditions of the local stability of the positive equilibrium and the existence of Hopf bifurcation are obtained by analysing the corresponding characteristic equation, and the properties of Hopf bifurcation are given by using the normal form theory and centre manifold theorem. We investigate the dynamics of a prey--predator model with cooperative hunting among specialist predators and maturation delay in predator growth. First, we consider a model without delay and explore the effect of hunting time on the coexistence of predator and their prey. When the hunting time is long enough and the cooperation rate among predators is weak, prey and predator species tend to coexist. Furthermore, we observe the occurrences of a series of bifurcations that depend on the cooperation rate and the hunting time. Second, we introduce a maturation delay for predator growth and analyse its impact on the system's dynamics.Wefind that as the delay becomes larger, predator species become more likely to go extinct, as the long maturation delay hinders the growth of the predator population. In this paper, a previous tumour–immune interaction model is simplified by neglecting a relatively weak direct immune activation by the tumour cells, which can still keep the essential dynamics properties of the original model. As the immune activation process is not instantaneous, we now incorporate one delay for the activation of the effector cells (ECs) by helper T cells (HTCs) into the model. Furthermore, we investigate the stability and instability regions of the tumour-presence equilibrium state of the delay-induced system with respect to two parameters, the activation rate of ECs by HTCs and the HTCs stimulation rate by the presence of identified tumour antigens. We show the dual role of this delay that can induce stability switches exhibiting destabilization as well as stabilization of the tumour-presence equilibrium. This paper deals with a plant–pollinator model with diffusion and time delay effects. By considering the distribution of eigenvalues of the corresponding linearized equation, we first study stability of the positive constant steady-state and existence of spatially homogeneous and spatially inhomogeneous periodic solutions are investigated. In many existing predator-prey or plant-herbivore models, the numerical response is assumed to be proportional to the functional response. In this paper, without such an assumption, we consider a diffusive plant-herbivore system with Neumann boundary conditions. Besides stability of spatially homogeneous steady states, we also derive conditions for the occurrence of Hopf bifurcation and steady-state bifurcation and provide geometrical methods to locate the bifurcation values. We numerically explore the complex transient spatio-temporal behaviours induced by these bifurcations. In the paper, based on the electrophysiological experimental data, the Hippocampal neuron reduced model under the pathology condition of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been built by modifying parameters' values. The reduced neuron model's dynamic characteristics under effect of AD are comparatively studied. Under direct current stimulation, compared with the normal neuron model, the AD neuron model's dynamic characteristics have obviously been changed. The neuron model under the AD condition undergoes supercritical Andronov-Hopf bifurcation from the rest state to the continuous discharge state. It is different from the neuron model under the normal condition, which undergoes saddle-node bifurcation. So, the neuron model changes into a resonator with monostable state from an integrator with bistable state under AD's action. In this paper, we study complex dynamical behaviour in biological systems due to multiple limit cycles bifurcation. We use simple epidemic and predator--prey models to show exact routes to new types of bistability, that is, bistability between equilibrium and periodic oscillation, and bistability between two oscillations, which may more realistically describe the real situations. In this work, we first modify a Lotka–Volterra predator–prey system to incorporate an opportunistic predator and weak Allee effect in prey. The prey will be extinct if the combined effect of hunting and other food resources of predator is large. Otherwise, the dynamic behaviour of the system is extremely rich. A series of bifurcations such as saddle-node bifurcation, Hopf bifurcation, and Bogdanov–Takens bifurcation can happen. This article is concerned with the dynamics of malaria infection model with diffusion and delay. The disease free threshold ℜ 0 and the immune response threshold value ℜ 1 of the malaria infection are obtained, which characterize the stability of the disease free equilibrium and infection equilibrium (with or without immune response). In addition, fluctuations occur when the model undergoes Hopf bifurcation as the delay passes through a certain critical value τ 0 . The dynamic mechanism of a whole-cell model containing electrical signalling and two-compartment Ca 2 + signalling in gonadotrophs is investigated. The transition from spiking to bursting by Hopf bifurcation of the fast subsystem about the slow variable is detected via the suitable parameters. When the timescale of K + gating variable is changed, the relaxation oscillation with locally small fluctuation, chaotic bursting and mixed-mode bursting (MMB) are revealed through chaos. In addition, the bifurcation of [ C a 2 + ] i with regard to [ I P 3 ] is analysed, showing periodic solutions, torus, period doubling solutions and chaos. We prove bifurcation theorems for evolutionary game theoretic (Darwinian dynamic) versions of nonlinear matrix equations for structured population dynamics. These theorems generalize existing theorems concerning the bifurcation and stability of equilibrium solutions when an extinction equilibrium destabilizes by allowing for the general appearance of the bifurcation parameter. We apply the theorems to a Darwinian model designed to investigate the evolutionary selection of reproductive strategies that involve either low or high post-reproductive survival (semelparity or iteroparity). The model incorporates the phenotypic trait dependence of two features: population density effects on fertility and a trade-off between inherent fertility and post-reproductive survival. Our analysis of the model determines conditions under which evolution selects for low or for high reproductive survival. In some cases (notably an Allee component effect on newborn survival), the model predicts multiple attractor scenarios in which low or high reproductive survival is initial condition dependent. Understanding mosquitoes life cycle is of great interest presently because of the increasing impact of vector borne diseases in several countries. There is evidence of oscillations in mosquito populations independent of seasonality, still unexplained, based on observations both in laboratories and in nature. We propose a simple mathematical model of egg hatching enhancement by larvae which produces such oscillations that conveys a possible explanation. We propose both a theoretical analysis, based on slow–fast dynamics and Hopf bifurcation, and numerical investigations in order to shed some light on the mechanisms at work in this model. Based on game theory, we propose an age-structured model to investigate the imitation dynamics of vaccine uptake. We first obtain the existence and local stability of equilibria. We show that Hopf bifurcation can occur. We also establish the global stability of the boundary equilibria and persistence of the disease. We consider a size-structured population model where individuals may be recruited into the population at different sizes. First- and second-order finite difference schemes are developed to approximate the solution of the model. The convergence of the approximations to a unique weak solution is proved. We then show that as the distribution of the new recruits become concentrated at the smallest size, the weak solution of the distributed states-at-birth model converges to the weak solution of the classical Gurtin-McCamytype size-structured model in the weak* topology. Numerical simulations are provided to demonstrate the achievement of the desired accuracy of the two methods for smooth solutions as well as the superior performance of the second-order method in resolving solution-discontinuities. Finally, we provide an example where supercritical Hopf-bifurcation occurs in the limiting single state-at-birth model and we apply the second-order numerical scheme to show that such bifurcation also occurs in the distributed model.
