In this paper, we investigated a new heroin–cocaine epidemic model which incorporates spatial heterogeneity and nonlinear incidence rate. The main project of this paper is to explore the threshold dynamics in terms of the basic reproduction number $ \mathcal {R}_0 $ R 0 , which was defined by applying the next-generation operator. The threshold type results shown that if $ \mathcal {R}_0 \lt 1 $ R 0 < 1 , then the drug-free steady state is globally asymptotically stable. If $ \mathcal {R}_0 \gt 1 $ R 0 > 1 , then heroin–cocaine spread is uniformly persistent. Furthermore, the globally asymptotic stability of the drug-free steady state has been established for the critical case of $ \mathcal {R}_0=1 $ R 0 = 1 by analysing the local asymptotic stability and global attractivity. HIV/AIDS-COVID-19 co-infection is a major public health concern especially in developing countries of the world. This paper presents HIV/AIDS-COVID-19 co-infection to investigate the impact of interventions on its transmission using ordinary differential equation. In the analysis of the model, the solutions are shown to be non-negative and bounded, using next-generation matrix approach the basic reproduction numbers are computed, sufficient conditions for stabilities of equilibrium points are established. The sensitivity analysis showed that transmission rates are the most sensitive parameters that have direct impact on the basic reproduction numbers and protection and treatment rates are more sensitive and have indirect impact to the basic reproduction numbers. Numerical simulations shown that some parameter effects on the transmission of single infections as well as co-infection, and applying the protection rates and treatment rates have effective roles to minimize and also to eradicate the HIV/AIDS-COVID-19 co-infection spreading in the community. In this paper we assess the effectiveness of different non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) against COVID-19 utilizing a compartmental model. The local asymptotic stability of equilibria (disease-free and endemic) in terms of the basic reproduction number have been determined. We find that the system undergoes a backward bifurcation in the case of imperfect quarantine. The parameters of the model have been estimated from the total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in India. Sensitivity analysis of the basic reproduction number has been performed. The findings also suggest that effectiveness of face masks plays a significant role in reducing the COVID-19 prevalence in India. Optimal control problem with several control strategies has been investigated. We find that the intervention strategies including implementation of lockdown, social distancing, and awareness only, has the highest cost-effectiveness in controlling the infection. We define the basic reproduction number R 0 and show that if R 0 ≤ 1 , then the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable, whereas if R 0 > 1 , then it is unstable and there exists a unique endemic equilibrium. We obtain sufficient conditions for a Hopf bifurcation that induces a nontrivial periodic solution which represents recurrent epidemic waves. By numerical simulations, we illustrate stability and instability parameter regions. The goal of this paper is to investigate the influence of the waning immunity on the dynamics of Tilapia Lake Virus (TiLV) transmission in wild and farmed tilapia within freshwater. We formulate a model for which susceptible individuals can contract the disease in two ways: (i) direct mode caused by contact with infected individuals; (ii) indirect mode due to the presence of pathogenic agents in the water. We obtain an age-structured model which combines both age since infection and age since recovery. We derive an explicit formula for the reproductive number R 0 and show that the disease-free equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable when, R 0 < 1. We discuss on the form of the waning immunity parameter and show numerically that a Hopf bifurcation may occur for suitable immunity parameter values, which means that there is a periodic solution around the endemic equilibrium when, R 0 > 1. In this paper, a reaction-diffusion SIR epidemic model via environmental driven infection in heterogeneous space is proposed. To reflect the prevention and control measures of disease in allusion to the susceptible in the model, the nonlinear incidence function E f (S) is applied to describe the protective measures of susceptible. In the general spatially heterogeneous case of the model, the well-posedness of solutions is obtained. The basic reproduction number R 0 is calculated. When R 0 ≤ 1 the global asymptotical stability of the disease-free equilibrium is obtained, while when R 0 > 1 the model is uniformly persistent. Furthermore, in the spatially homogeneous case of the model, when R 0 > 1 the global asymptotic stability of the endemic equilibrium is obtained. In this paper, with eclipse stage in consideration, we propose an HIV-1 infection model with a general incidence rate and CTL immune response. We first study the existence and local stability of equilibria, which is characterized by the basic infection reproduction number R 0 and the basic immunity reproduction number R 1 . The local stability analysis indicates the occurrence of transcritical bifurcations of equilibria. We confirm the bifurcations at the disease-free equilibrium and the infected immune-free equilibrium with transmission rate and the decay rate of CTLs as bifurcation parameters, respectively. Then we apply the approach of Lyapunov functions to establish the global stability of the equilibria, which is determined by the two basic reproduction numbers. These theoretical results are supported with numerical simulations. Self-medication is an important initial response to illness in Africa. This mode of medication is often done with the help of African traditional medicines. Because of the misconception that African traditional medicines can cure/prevent all diseases, some Africans may opt for COVID-19 prevention and management by self-medicating. Thus to efficiently predict the dynamics of COVID-19 in Africa, the role of the self-medicated population needs to be taken into account. In this paper, we formulate and analyse a mathematical model for the dynamics of COVID-19 in Cameroon. The model is represented by a system of compartmental age-structured ODEs that takes into account the self-medicated population and subdivides the human population into two age classes relative to their current immune system strength. In this paper, a deterministic model characterizing the within-host infection of Hepatitis C virus (HCV) in intrahepatic and extrahepatic tissues is presented. In addition, the model also includes the effect of the cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) immunity described by a linear activation rate by infected cells. Firstly, the non-negativity and boundedness of solutions of the model are established. Secondly, the basic reproduction number R 01 and immune reproduction number R 02 are calculated, respectively. Three equilibria, namely, infection-free, CTL immune response-free and infected equilibrium with CTL immune response are discussed in terms of these two thresholds. Thirdly, the stability of these three equilibria is investigated theoretically as well as numerically. The results show that when R 01 < 1 , the virus will be cleared out eventually and the CTL immune response will also disappear; when R 02 < 1 < R 01 , the virus persists within the host, but the CTL immune response disappears eventually; when R 02 > 1 , both of the virus and the CTL immune response persist within the host. We propose a hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) transmission model for children with behaviour change and imperfect quarantine. The symptomatic and quarantined states obey constant behaviour change while others follow variable behaviour change depending on the numbers of new and recent infections. The basic reproduction number $ \mathcal {R}_0 $ R 0 of the model is defined and shown to be a threshold for disease persistence and eradication. Namely, the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable if $ \mathcal {R}_0\le 1 $ R 0 ≤ 1 whereas the disease persists and there is a unique endemic equilibrium otherwise. By fitting the model to weekly HFMD data of Shanghai in 2019, the reproduction number is estimated at 2.41. Sensitivity analysis for $ \mathcal {R}_0 $ R 0 shows that avoiding contagious contacts and implementing strict quarantine are essential to lower HFMD persistence. Numerical simulations suggest that strong behaviour change not only reduces the peak size and endemic level dramatically but also impairs the role of asymptomatic transmission. A multi-patch HIV/AIDS model with heterosexual transmission is formulated to investigate the impact of population migration on the spread of HIV/AIDS. We derive the basic reproduction number $ R_{0} $ R 0 and prove that if $ R_{0} \lt 1 $ R 0 < 1 , the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable. If $ R_{0} \gt 1 $ R 0 > 1 and certain conditions are satisfied, the endemic equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable. We apply the model to two patches and conduct numerical simulations. If HIV/AIDS becomes extinct in each patch when two patches are isolated, the disease remains extinct in two patches when the population migration occurs; if HIV/AIDS spreads in each patch when two patches are isolated, the disease remains persistent in two patches when the population migration occurs; if the disease disappears in one patch and spreads in the other patch when they are isolated, the disease can spread or disappear in two patches if migration rates of individuals are suitably chosen. Cholera is an acute enteric infectious disease caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Despite a huge body of research, the precise nature of its transmission dynamics has yet to be fully elucidated. Mathematical models can be useful to better understand how an infectious agent can spread and be properly controlled. We develop a compartmental model describing a human population, a bacterial population as well as a phage population. We show that there might be eight equilibrium points, one of which is a disease free equilibrium point. We carry out numerical simulations and sensitivity analyses and we show that the presence of phage can reduce the number of infectious individuals. This note provides an elementary derivation of the basic reproduction number and the effective reproduction number from the discrete Kermack–McKendrick epidemic model. The derived formulae match those derived from the continuous version of the model; however, the derivation from discrete model is a bit more intuitive. The MATLAB functions for its calculation are given. A real case example is considered and the results are compared with those obtained by the R0 and the EpiEstim software packages. Studies have shown that sexual transmission, both heterosexually and homosexually, is one of the main ways of HBV infection. Based on this fact, we propose a mathematical model to study the sexual transmission of HBV among adults by classifying adults into men and women and considering both same-sex and opposite-sex transmissions of HBV in adults. Firstly, we calculate the basic reproduction number R 0 and the disease-free equilibrium point E 0 . Secondly, by analysing the sensitivity of R 0 in terms of model parameters, we find that the infection rate among people who have same-sex partners, the frequency of homosexual contact and the immunity rate of adults play important roles in the transmission of HBV. Moreover, we use our model to fit the reported data in China and forecast the trend of hepatitis B. Our results demonstrate that popularizing the basic knowledge of HBV among residents, advocating healthy and reasonable sexual life style, reducing the number of adult carriers, and increasing the immunization rate of adults are effective measures to prevent and control hepatitis B. Basic reproduction number R 0 in network epidemic dynamics is studied in the case of stochastic regime-switching networks. For generality, the dependence between successive networks is considered to follow a continuous time semi-Markov chain. R 0 is the weighted average of the basic reproduction numbers of deterministic subnetworks.
