The narrower on lower floors and the wider on upper floors structure is used in the National Fitness Center, in Ejin Horo Banner, Inner Mongolia, which has the characteristic of extreme vertical stiffness irregularity. The elastoplastic performance in the condition of static stability limit state becomes the key factors of the security of the structure. First, the performance of the main structure in the condition of static loading was analyzed adopting the performance target put forward in this paper. The choice of the multi-floor structure with the huge grid as the best scheme was made among many schemes. Then the seismic performance studies were conducted by response spectrum analysis, elastic dynamic time-history analysis and elasto-plastic dynamic time-history analysis respectively. The key part of the analysis is the irregularity of the structure, the security at the end of cantilever and the elasto-plastic performance in the condition of major earthquake. Analysis shows that the structural scheme selected based on the performance target put forward in this paper is economic and reasonable, and the static and seismic performance objectives for design are realized. The paper introduces the large-span cable dome structure of the National Fitness Center in Ejin Horo Banner, Inner Mongolia. A 1:10 scale cable dome model was designed. The model's mechanical performances were studied under design load after shape forming. By comparing results drawn from numerical simulation and experiment, the characteristics of static response were obtained. The influence of asymmetric live load on the structure's global static behavior was considered. This study indicates: cable dome's ridge cable stress reduces on the external load; the initial stress can be adjusted along with external load; the cable dome is a flexible space system, which is sensitive to external load. The theoretical value and the experimental value matches well under design load, which verifies the result of the theoretical calculations and the modal design. The stiffness of the cable dome structure is provided by the initial prestressing force. The prestressing force loss has an serious influence on the safety of the structure. The design and construction of the cable-strut joint is the key technique to ensure the smooth sliding of loop cable and the efficient transfer of prestressing force to loop cable. To build the National Fitness Center in Ejin Horo banner, Inner Mongolia, a new-type cable-strut joint including a sliding bearing is invented. It essentially changes the mechanical characteristics of the joint and can decrease the prestressing force loss. This paper analyses geometrical constitution of cable-strut joint and makes research to the method for calculating the prestressing force loss of the loop cable. The nonlinear contact friction finite element analysis of the loop cable and cable-strut joint was carried out with ANSYS. The prestressing force loss was calculated through the monitored data of the model experiment. The computed results are compared with the actual monitored data, and the causes for large monitored pretressing force loss were studied. The following suggestions are provided for cable-strut joint of cable dome: the constructional detail of the cable-strut joint should be improved to diminish the prestressing force loss; the prestressing force loss value of cable-strnt joint is preferable to be 3% -4% , meanwhile the cable-strut joint should be made precisely and the construction should be controlled strictly. To satisfy the need for the design of the National Fitness Center in Ejin Horo Banner, Inner Mongolia, the fire resistance performance of the cable dome structural system is studied in the paper. Considering material nonlinearity under high temperature, the structural response under different fire conditions and the basic laws of structural deformation, node displacement and prestressing force loss were analyzed, based on thermal-structural coupling method and the model of atmosphere temperature ascending in large space. This research indicates that the lateral stiffness of Geiger cable dome structure is weak and it is susceptible to eccentric fire load; the eccessive deflection and lateral deformation are major reasons for structural failure and nonstructural components' early damage under fire. The pestressing force loss of the ridge cables, especially the inner ridge cables, is more serious, and the struts should be considered as key parts in the fire resistance design. Finally, for the deficiency of plane stiffness in Geiger cable dome structure, the improvement of adding loop rigid rods on the upper node of struts can benefit the fire resistance performance significantly.
