Background: Lupus nephritis is clinically evident in 50-60% of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and it is histologically evident in most SLE patients, even those without clinical manifestations of renal disease. (See the image below.) Evaluating renal function in SLE patients is important because early detection and treatment of renal involvement can significantly improve renal outcome. Lupus nephritis (LN) appears to be one of the most common and serious complications of SLE, and it is associated with increased rate of morbidity and mortality. The diagnosis of SLE and also LN at very early stage and obtaining a correct assessment of renal flaring remain great challenges because of the serological and clinical heterogeneity.
