Substantial modifications are presented for a previously described experiment using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to quantitatively determine analytes in commercial nail polish remover. The revised experiment is intended for a second- or third-year laboratory course in analytical chemistry and can be conducted for larger laboratory section enrollments. The experiment employs the standard addition method, places a strong emphasis on careful treatment of NMR data, and introduces elements of group learning where students critically interpret a relatively large set of data. NMR spectra are obtained from aqueous solution samples without any deuterium present for a lock signal, a technical feature of the experiment that might be of general interest to the undergraduate chemistry teaching community. A nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy experiment for the undergraduate physical chemistry laboratory is described that encompasses both qualitative and quantitative pedagogical goals. Qualitatively, the experiment illustrates how images are obtained in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Quantitatively, students experience the relationships between gradient strength, spectral width, and the quality of the obtained projection images as they calibrate the maximum field gradient strength of the instrument. They also find out the size of a trapped air bubble in their sample in close analogy how one could obtain information on physical sizes of objects in MRI. (Contains 1 table and 3 figures.)

An experiment using a variable volume cell is presented where students actively control and directly observe the phase equilibrium inside the view cell. Measuring and exploring P-V-T phase behavior through dielectric constant measurements conveys the important concept that solvent behavior can be changed continuously in the sc fluid state.

A classroom exercise that engages students as a team to develop an intuitive understanding of P-V-T phase behavior of a pure fluid is discussed. This exercise, when implemented in classrooms over a period of three years revealed that the students achieved a deeper level of understanding about phase behavior.

The experiment increases the exposure to nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and provides students opportunity to learn by analyzing large data set as part of a team.

A laboratory exercise designed to introduce undergraduate students in the physical chemistry to the basic concepts of linear field gradients in NMR spectroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is described. The students learn to calibrate the maximum field gradient strength by obtaining a series of projection images from several 'phantom' objects as a function of applied field gradient strength.

A laboratory experiment is presented for the upper-level undergraduate physical chemistry curriculum in which the ternary phase diagram of water, 1-propanol and n-heptane is measured using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The experiment builds upon basic concepts of NMR spectral analysis, typically taught in the undergraduate organic chemistry curriculum, applying them to the study of phase behavior, a traditional basic topic of thermodynamics.
