Elements of Bader’s theory of atoms in molecules are combined with density-functional theory to provide an electron-preceding perspective on the deformation of materials. From this perspective, a network of atoms is changed by moving the bonds that connect them; the nuclei then follow. The electronic stress tensor is the key to understanding this process. Eigenvectors of the electronic stress tensor at critical points of the electron density provide insight into the “normal electronic modes” that accompany structural dynamics and rearrangements. Eigenvectors of the second-derivative matrix of the electron density emerge as effective approximations to the eigenvectors of the stress tensor; this makes it possible to apply our results to experimentally and computationally determined electron densities. To demonstrate the usefulness of our analysis, we show that (a) the low-frequency modes of ice Ic can be predicted from the eigenvectors of the second-derivative matrix and (b) the eigenvectors of the second-derivative matrix are associated with the direction of structural change during the pressure-induced phase transition from ice XI to a ferroelectric ice VIII-like structure. We conclude that the eigenvectors of the second-derivative matrix of the electron density are the key ingredient for constructing a dynamical theory of atoms in molecules. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Higher-order global softnesses, local softnesses, and softness kernels are defined along with their hardness inverses. The local hardness equalization principle recently derived by the authors is extended to arbitrary order. The resulting hierarchy of equalization principles indicates that the electronegativity/chemical potential, local hardness, and local hyperhardnesses all are constant when evaluated for the ground-state electron density. The new equalization principles can be used to test whether a trial electron density is an accurate approximation to the true ground-state density and to discover molecules with desired reactive properties, as encapsulated by their chemical reactivity indicators. Stimulated by the difficulty of deriving effective kinetic energy functionals of the electron density, the authors consider using the local kinetic energy as the fundamental descriptor for molecular systems. In this ansatz, the electron density must be expressed as a functional of the local kinetic energy. There are similar results for other quantities, including the local temperature and the Kohn-Sham potential. Given a general, N-particle Hamiltonian operator, analogs of the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem are derived for functions that are more general than the particle density, including density matrices and the diagonal elements thereof. The generalization of Lieb’s Legendre transform ansatz to the generalized Hohenberg-Kohn functional not only solves the υ-representability problem for these entities, but, more importantly, also solves the N-representability problem. Restricting the range of operators explored by the Legendre transform leads to a lower bound on the true functional. If all the operators of interest are incorporated in the restricted maximization, however, the variational principle dictates that exact results are obtained for the systems of interest. This might have important implications for practical work not only for density matrices but also for density functionals. A previously introduced partitioning of the molecular one-electron density matrix over atoms and bonds [D. Vanfleteren et al., J. Chem. Phys. 133, 231103 (2010)] is investigated in detail. Orthogonal projection operators are used to define atomic subspaces, as in Natural Population Analysis. The orthogonal projection operators are constructed with a recursive scheme. These operators are chemically relevant and obey a stockholder principle, familiar from the Hirshfeld-I partitioning of the electron density. The stockholder principle is extended to density matrices, where the orthogonal projectors are considered to be atomic fractions of the summed contributions. All calculations are performed as matrix manipulations in one-electron Hilbert space. Mathematical proofs and numerical evidence concerning this recursive scheme are provided in the present paper. The eigenvectors of the electronic stress tensor can be used to identify where new bond paths form in a chemical reaction. In cases where the eigenvectors of the stress tensor are not available, the gradient-expansion-approximation suggests using the eigenvalues of the second derivative tensor of the electron density instead; this approximation can be made quantitatively accurate by scaling and shifting the second-derivative tensor, but it has a weaker physical basis and less predictive power for chemical reactivity than the stress tensor. These tools provide an extension of the quantum theory of atoms and molecules from the characterization of molecular electronic structure to the prediction of chemical reactivity. A double-atom partitioning of the molecular one-electron density matrix is used to describe atoms and bonds. All calculations are performed in Hilbert space. The concept of atomic weight functions (familiar from Hirshfeld analysis of the electron density) is extended to atomic weight matrices. These are constructed to be orthogonal projection operators on atomic subspaces, which has significant advantages in the interpretation of the bond contributions. In close analogy to the iterative Hirshfeld procedure, self-consistency is built in at the level of atomic charges and occupancies. The method is applied to a test set of about 67 molecules, representing various types of chemical binding. A double-index atomic partitioning of the molecular first-order density matrix is proposed. Contributions diagonal in the atomic indices correspond to atomic density matrices, whereas off-diagonal contributions carry information about the bonds. The resulting matrices have good localization properties, in contrast to single-index atomic partitioning schemes of the molecular density matrix. It is shown that the electron density assigned to individual atoms, when derived from the density matrix partitioning, can be made consistent with well-known partitions of the electron density over atom in the molecule basins, either with sharp or with fuzzy boundaries. The method is applied to a test set of about 50 molecules, representative for various types of chemical binding. Relationships between third-order reactivity indicators in the closed system [N, v(r)], open system [μ, v(r)], and density [ρ(r)] pictures are derived. Our method of derivation unifies and extends known results. Among the relationships is a link between the third-order response of the energy to changes in the density and the quadratic response of the density to changes in external potential. This provides a link between hyperpolarizability and the system’s sensitivity to changes in electron density. The dual descriptor is a unifying feature of many of the formulas we derive.
