Using a simple, low cost, and excellent efficient approach, carbon dots (CDs) were fabricated via a one-pot hydrothermal process of coffee waste. Amazingly, the combination of 2% CDs with ZnBi2O4 to form a new and excellent heterogeneous photocatalyst enabled the complete decomposition of 2, 4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2, 4-D) into CO2 and H2O. The findings of this study provide a new perspective on the utilization of agricultural waste for creating products of scientific and practical significance. More than 91% of 2, 4-D (initial concentration of 30 mg/L) was completely decomposed and dechlorinated using 1.0 g/L of CDs (2%)-ZnBi2O4 at pH 4.0 after 120 min of exposure to visible light (with k = 0.0178 min−1), and more than 86% of the decomposed 2, 4-D was mineralized into CO2 and H2O. There was no sign of catalyst deactivation after four cycles of reuse, demonstrating the durability and efficiency of CDs (2%)-ZnBi2O4. The significant improvement in the photocatalytic efficiency of CDs (2%)-ZnBi2O4 compared with that of bare CDs or ZnBi2O4 is due to the formation of defects at the interfaces of the heterojunction; therefore, the movement of photogenerated electrons at the interface between the two components is rapid. The mineralization of 2, 4-D by CDs (2%)-ZnBi2O4 upon exposure to visible light is induced mainly by the photogenerated holes, followed by O2•−, and finally OH• radicals.

In Vietnam, Macrosolen tricolor is used for the treatment of bloating, broken bones, cough, diarrhea, diuretic, rheumatism, and laxative effects. The study aimed to identify the in vitro antiproliferation and anti-inflammation of all fractions and purified compounds from the M. tricolor whole plants, as well as the in silico molecular docking of the potentially cytotoxic compounds. As the results, fractions (MTH.I, MTH.II, MTE.I, and MTE.II) strongly demonstrated antiproliferative properties against three tested cells, MDA-MB-231, RD, and HepG2 (IC50 values ranged from 4.00 ± 0.20 to 70.60 ± 1.44 μg/mL), as well as anti-inflammatory effects (IC50 values ranged from 4.45 ± 0.08 to 23.00 ± 1.18 μg/mL), whereas other fractions meaningfully evidenced selective cytotoxicity and/or anti-inflammation. Therefore, the phytochemical compositions of the active fractions were illuminated, leading to the characterization of eighteen compounds. Compounds (3–5) revealed the most cytotoxic effects towards all examined cells (IC50 values ranged from 6.88 ± 0.12 to 71.64 ± 1.17 μM) and the strongest anti-inflammatory properties (IC50 values of 16.30 ± 0.92, 7.31 ± 0.55, and 9.23 ± 0.60 μM, respectively). Compound 11 showed potential cytotoxicity against MDA-MB-231, RD, and HepG2 cells (IC50 values of 24.42 ± 0.28, 20.60 ± 0.25, and 3.20 ± 0.02 μM, respectively). Furthermore, compounds (4, 5, and 11) interacted with the active site of the apoptosis regulator Bcl-2 protein (PDB ID: 2O2F), were comparable to PAC, and were compatible with their anticancer activity. This project suggests that M. tricolor is a good source of natural antiproliferative and anti-inflammatory agents and contributes to understanding the biological activities of Macrosolen species in traditional Vietnamese medicine.

Copper lighter tetrylenes are promising for inhibition towards Rhizoctonia solani-based protein PDB-4G9M and Magnaporthe oryzae-based PDB-6JBR in rice. Quantum properties of four hypothetic copper complexes of carbenes and silylenes (Cu-NHC1, Cu-NHC2, Cu-NHSi1, and Cu-NHSi2) were examined using the density functional theory. Their inhibitability towards the targeted proteins was evaluated using molecular docking simulation. Quantum analysis predicts the stability of the investigated complexes and thus their practical existability and practicable synthesisability. Their electronic configurations are justified as highly conducive to intermolecular interaction. Regarding ligand-protein as carbenes/silylenes-4G9M inhibitory structures, the stability is estimated in the order [Cu-NHC2]-4G9M (DS −12.9 kcal⋅mol−1) > [Cu-NHSi1]-4G9M (DS −11.8 kcal⋅mol−1) = [Cu-NHSi2]-4G9M (DS −11.7 kcal⋅mol−1) > [Cu-NHC1]-4G9M (DS –11.4 kcal⋅mol−1). In contrast, the corresponding order for the carbenes/silylenes-6JBR systems is [Cu-NHSi2]-6JBR (DS –13.4 kcal⋅mol−1) > [Cu-NHC2]-6JBR (DS −13.0 kcal⋅mol−1) = [Cu-NHSi1]-6JBR (DS −12.6 kcal⋅mol−1) > [Cu-NHC1]-6JBR (DS −12.3 kcal⋅mol−1). In theory, this study suggests a potentiality of copper lighter tetrylenes and their derivatives against the infection of fungi Rhizoctonia solani and Magnaporthe oryzae, thus encouraging attempts for experimental developments.

This research aims to evaluate the influence of different 3D metals (Fe, Co, and Ni) substituted to Mn on the electrochemical performance of P2-NaxMe1/3Mn2/3O2 material, which was synthesized by the coprecipitation process followed by calcination at high temperature. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results revealed that the synthesized Mn-rich materials possessed a P2-type structure with a negligible amount of oxide impurities. The materials possessed their typical cyclic voltammogram and charge-discharge profiles; indeed, a high reversible redox reaction was obtained by NaxCo1/3Mn2/3O2 sample. Both NaxCo1/3Mn2/3O2 and NaxFe1/3Mn2/3O2 provided a high specific capacity of above 140 mAh·g−1; however, the former showed better cycling performance with 83% capacity retention after 50 cycles at C/10 and high rate capability. Meanwhile, the Ni-sub NaxNi1/3Mn2/3O2 exhibited excellent cycling stability but a low specific capacity of 110 mAh·g−1 and inferior rate capability. The diffusion coefficient of Na+ ions into the structure tended to decrease with a depth of discharge; those values were in the range of 10−10–10−9 cm2·s−1 and 10−11–10−10 cm2·s−1 in the solid solution region and biphasic region, respectively.

The study aims to determine the hepatoprotective effect of n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol extracts of the leaves and stems of two Cleome species against carbon tetrachloride- (CCl4-) induced liver toxicity both in vitro using human hepatoma (HepG2) cells and in vivo in rats as well as the hepatoprotective property of all isolated compounds on HepG2. After 72 h of treatment, at the concentrations of 25, 50, and 100 μg/mL, the methanol of C. chelidonii stems (CCSM) ranged from 18.6% to 20.8%, whereas the methanol of C. chelidonii stems (CVSM) increased from 12.3% to 17.2% cell viability. The results show that CCSM and CVSM significantly expressed in vitro hepaprotective activity on HepG2. Therefore, the animals were daily treated with these extracts at the doses of 15, 30, and 45 mg/kg body weight for 5 days, and CCl4 was injected (2 ml/kg body weight, i.p.) on the 2nd and 3rd days. Levels of aspartate aminotransferase (ALT) and alanine aminotransferase (AST) in the blood were measured and compared to the silymarin control. The treatments with CCSM and CVSM (30, and 45 mg/kg) possessed significant hepatoprotection and were comparable with the activity of silymarin. Further, phytochemical studies of these ones were conducted and led to the identification of eight flavonoids: visconoside A (1), visconoside B (2), quercetin 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside 7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside (3), kaempferol 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside 7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside (4), cleomeside A (5), cleomeside B (6), cleomeside C (7), and quercetin-3-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1⟶2)]-α-L-rhamnopyranoside 7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside (8). Two major flavonoids (1 and 4) displayed significant hepatoprotective property (at the concentration of 100 μM, the prevention percentage values were 66.5% and 74.2%, respectively, compared to the quercetin control, with value of 80.3%).

In the study, Fe was used as a dopant to enhance photocatalytic activity of TiO2. Then, the Fe-doped TiO2 was deposited on bentonite, which was pillared by Fe. The synthesized materials were characterized by SEM, XRD, UV-Vis, BET, and point of zero charge (pHPZC). Then, the synthesized materials were used for diazinon removal under both dark and visible light conditions to investigate adsorption and photocatalytic degradation abilities of the synthesized materials. The maximum diazinon adsorption capacity of the synthesized Fe-TiO2/Bent-Fe was 27.03 mg/g. The obtained results indicated that the Fe-TiO2/Bent-Fe exhibited high photocatalytic degradation activity for removal of diazinon even under visible light. The diazinon removal experiments were also conducted using different photocatalyst dosages, under different pH and light sources to figure the optimal conditions for removal processes. The obtained results indicated that optimal photocatalyst dosage and pH were 0.5 g/L and 4.5, respectively. Finally, the natural light generated from solar could be suitable used for diazinon removal by the synthesized Fe-TiO2/Bent-Fe.

In this work, the mixture of red mud slurry and inorganic salt ((NH4)2SO4) has been used as an electrolyte for electrochemical activation of graphite. The red mud-activated graphite composite was then used as an adsorbent for removing methylene blue from aqueous solution by the batch method. The effect of pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, and the initial concentration of methylene blue was investigated. The optimal condition was found at pH 6, contact time 120 min, and amount of adsorbent 1 mg/L. The maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 89.28 mg/g based on the Langmuir isotherm equation, suggesting that the red mud-activated graphite composite is a very potential adsorbent for removing methylene blue and is also used in other coloured wastewater treatments.
