In today's globalized world wood-based products are often imported from countries other than those where the wood was grown. Bilateral trade statistics are thus only of limited help for getting a better understanding of how production-related environmental impacts are caused by consumption elsewhere. This study presents a novel physical accounting model that allows flows of wood-based products to be traced along international supply chains, therefore making it possible to consistently relate the consumption of wood-based products to the origin of roundwood. In comparison to previous studies, the proposed method covers entire supply chains, including finished wood and paper products, such as furniture and printed matter, and also accounts for flows of processing residues and recovered paper. The main results of the accounting model are detailed country-by-country matrices indicating the locations of origin of the products consumed in a given nation. For instance, it is revealed that out of the finished wood products consumed in the USA in 2018, 75.6% originated domestically, 10.7% from neighbouring Canada and the remaining 13.7% from other countries. The global call to address climate change and advance sustainable development has created rapid growth in research, investment, and policymaking regarding the renewable energy transition of Indigenous communities. From a rightsholder perspective, Indigenous Peoples' vision of sustainability, autonomy, and sovereignty should guide research on their energy needs. In this paper, we present a multi-method, inductive examination to identify gaps between Indigenous communities' expressed needs and rights, and the questions researchers and policymakers investigate in energy transition research conducted in the context of Indigenous communities located in Canada. We combine a systematic review of the extant literature, a scoping review of the grey literature on off-grid communities by Indigenous and non-Indigenous governments and non-governmental policy bodies, qualitative primary data collected via fieldwork, and an in-depth study of an Indigenous-led renewable energy transition study conducted by Haíɫzaqv Nation's Climate Action Team. We holistically examine these different perspectives and identify emergent themes to recommend ways to bridge the gaps between off-grid renewable energy research and stated Indigenous community priorities. Sustainable innovations are of growing interest to both managers and researchers. Managers want to understand how to develop these innovations. However, researchers have extensively focused on this question by analysing the determinants of sustainable innovation development. The purpose of the study is to address this issue by adopting a process view, which is an underexplored perspective in the literature of sustainable innovation. More precisely, the paper seeks to highlight the temporal and relational dimensions in a sustainable innovation development process by focusing on the following questions: How does sustainable innovation develop through interactions and transformations made by a manager and stakeholders? What are the mechanisms used by the manager to facilitate these interactions and transformations? The actor-network theory offers theoretical (socio-technical analysis) and methodological (socio-technical graph) tools to examine such questions. They are used to understand and track the relative successful development of a hybrid bike by a small and medium-sized enterprise in Canada. The findings reveal managerial mechanisms (playing the role of sustainability translator, defining multivocal obligatory passage points, casting of allies, mobilizing actors-certifiers and -influencers) related to four translation moments (problematization, interessement, enrolment and mobilization) in the sustainable innovation development that led us to consider it as a synchronous process (co-construction and parallel association). The main contributions of the study are: 1) the use of socio-technical analysis to provide an in-depth level of understanding of a sustainable innovation development within an organization; 2) the complete application of the socio-technical graph method to track a manager and stakeholders' interactions and transformations; 3) the identification of managerial practices that contribute to the success of the sustainable innovation development. The Government of Canada has implemented measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including a carbon tax and its proposed Clean Fuel Standard. Alberta's Oil Sands industry, arguably one of Canada's largest and most energy intensive industries, has made significant progress towards improving energy efficiency and reducing its fossil energy footprint, including investigating options for integrating bio-based feedstocks into bitumen extraction and processing. Nevertheless, developing sustainable bioenergy supply chains remains a crucial challenge to reaching this goal. This paper investigates pathways for harvesting and hauling biomass residues to produce bio-oil that can replace fossil fuels used in oil sands bitumen processing. A 3–stage grid model is developed, comprising a square grid distribution of harvesting fields and district centres. Biomass is collected and hauled to fast pyrolysis units centrally located within square harvesting fields. Raw bio-oil is hauled from fields to the centre of one of 11 District centres, where it is stabilized and blended. Stage–1 and Stage–2 estimate hauling distance using hypothetical roads described by geometric equations and tortuosity factors. Stage–3 hauling of stabilized bio-oil from District centres to upgraders at Scotford AB and Fort McMurray AB is estimated by using web-based mapping tools and actual road networks. Total diesel requirements for hauling are calculated using total distances obtained from the 3–stage hauling model. Average diesel consumption obtained from the model is 0.32 L per 1000 L of bio-oil produced, increasing to 3.45 L per 1000 L bio-oil delivered to district centres. Total diesel consumption is 10.23 and 14.40 L per 1000 L bio-oil delivered to Scotford and Ft. McMurray, respectively. The model shows that co-processing of biomass residues can reduce the fossil energy footprint of processing oil sands synthetic crude oil by 22–28%. The quantity of delivered bio-oil is sufficient to replace petroleum coke and synthetic crude oil used for combustion as well as a substantial fraction of natural gas fuel. Moreover, the model can help to determine the most suitable processing and hauling options at each stage in order to minimize diesel fuel requirements, and the model framework can be extended to other jurisdictions as well as other industries. • 3–stage hauling model for biomass and bio-oil destined for bitumen upgraders. • Diesel requirement estimated using hypothetical and actual road networks. • 87% of bio-oil's energy can replace fossil inputs to synthetic crude production. • Energy footprint is lower by 22% for SAGD operations and 28% for mining operations. • Model is applicable to other jurisdictions and other energy intensive industries. Abstract Household energy consumption and carbon footprints change with household characteristics such as type of residence, energy system performance, vehicle performance, and users' behavioral patterns. Accordingly, alternative energy technologies, such as clean electricity, hydrogen fuel cells, and energy efficient interventions, are being adopted in many parts of the world to reduce the residential, industrial, and transportation emissions. This paper presents a comprehensive research framework to identify the most desirable building retrofits and incentive schemes for Canadian households. Globally available incentive policies for low-emission vehicles and locally available retrofit options for single-family detached houses were identified during this study. A decision support tool based on life cycle thinking was developed to assess economic parameters, such as capital investment and annualized consumer cost, and environmental parameters such as greenhouse gas emissions. In order to rank and select the most desirable building retrofit, the TOPSIS ranking method was used. The linear programing graphical method was used to select the best incentive policy for low-emission vehicles. Finally, scenario analysis was used to compare different households based on regional economic and environmental characteristics. Provinces which have low-emission electricity grids such as Manitoba, British Columbia, and Quebec can primarily focus on incentives for electrified transportation. Additionally, the incentives for retrofits such as greener appliances and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems would also significantly reduce building carbon footprint. Conventional residential buildings with fossil fuel vehicles are more desirable for provinces like Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Nova Scotia which have high-emission electricity grids. Based on the outcomes of this research, a scientific incentive planning and management approach considering regional economic and environmental characteristics was introduced. The government of Quebec (Canada) is trying to find a useful outlet for the mixed waste glass pilling up in its landfills. One solution to consider is the use of fine glass powder from mixed waste glass as alternative cementitious materials (ACM) in concrete, using an open-loop circular-economy principle. To quantify the environmental feasibility of this concept, life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology, in combination with a real case study (i.e., a concrete sidewalk in Montreal, Canada) are both assessed. More specifically, two different scenarios are compared, the business-as-usual (BAU) concrete production model, and a glass powder (GP) concrete production process model. All modeling efforts are performed using SimaPro 8.2 software, the Ecoinvent 3.2 database and the IMPACT 2002 + impact method. Finally, a Monte Carlo simulation, in addition to different sensitivity analyses, are carried out to assess the influence of data uncertainty and key parameter changes, such as the distance from suppliers, potential lifetime extension of the concrete, and possible particulate emissions during GP production. Results show the environmental benefits of using GP as an ACM in terms of every indicator. Moreover, the significant contribution of cement production in the environmental burden of concrete is noted. It appears as the main hotspot in most midpoint indicators, and in all four endpoint indicators. It is especially highlighted as a global warming indicator, with 74% of the greenhouse gasses (GHG) related to cement production for the BAU scenario and 68% for the GP scenario. The emissions of particles into the atmosphere (such as CO 2 , NOx, and SOx) from the clinker kiln chimney plays a major role in the overall environmental impact of concrete production. Another key result is the importance of transportation distance of the base materials, which could reverse the conclusion. The originality of this paper relies on the environmental assessment of the up-cycling of GP as a supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) in concrete. Indeed, this study allows for a better understanding of environmental impact of concrete and highlights the extent to which environmental benefits remain when mixed waste glass is used in an open-loop circular-economy context. At a larger scale, this study aims to encourage all municipalities/government that are struggling with common waste – such as mixed waste glass -- to find industrial symbioses at a local scale. This paper tests for the applicability of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis at the Canadian and provincial/territorial levels using greenhouse gas emissions as an indicator for environmental degradation. The hypothesis is tested using provincial and territorial panel data from 1990 to 2014. The results vary depending on the econometric estimation method. The pooled regression results are mixed, with the EKC hypothesis confirmed at the Canadian level and in half of the provinces and territories. However, the fixed-effects regression results confirm the EKC hypothesis at the Canadian level and in all provinces and territories. Improving the environmental performance of built environments has received wider interest in the recent past. Asset management is an under-utilized strategy to enhance and maintain desired environmental performance of a building at low life cycle costs (LCC). Current asset management decision-making methods are not fully capable of incorporating future technological changes and complex time sensitive environmental demands. There is a knowledge gap in incorporating factors such as environmental performance, risk and time sensitivity to foster dynamic asset management decision making. This paper presents a multi-period asset management method for public buildings to minimize LCC and attain climate action goals. A scenario planning approach is used to incorporate future changes in technologies, costs and organizational policies. Risk based prioritization is used to compare and select maintenance alternatives in a given period. Value at risk is used to identify the lowest risk capital planning strategy for an organization. The proposed approach was demonstrated using an operating aquatic centre building in British Columbia, Canada. Three possible future scenario were considered. Proposed method was used to develop multi-period maintenance plans for future scenarios. Based on the analysis, Great Transitions scenario is expected to achieve the least financial risk. Road transportation is responsible for 23% of Canada's Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventory due to complete dependence on fossil fuels. Decarbonizing the transportation sector using alternative energy sources is one of the most effective strategies to achieve GHG emission reduction targets. Alternative transportation modes such as electric and hydrogen fuel cell based vehicles are considered as scalable technologies for decarbonizing the transportation sector. However, there is a knowledge gap for a systematic investigation approach on regional viability of aforementioned vehicles. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the financial feasibility and environmental impact of the electric light duty vehicles (LD-EVs) and hydrogen fuel cell light duty vehicles (LD-HFCVs) use in Canada. A life cycle thinking based approach has been proposed to compare costs and emissions of transportation based on electric and Hydrogen with traditional fossil fuel. The carbon offset saving was used to quantify the economic impact of GHG reduction. The carbon taxes for selected provinces were recommended as a potential policy implementation to reduce transport based GHG emissions. The results indicate that the provinces with low emission factor electric grids have a higher potential for LD-EV based transportation system in terms of costs and footprint. Presently LD-HFCVs are less desirable due to high purchase and operational cost. Development of a Hydrogen based transportation system through the production of cost effective hydrogen is preferable for provinces with a higher emission factor electric grids. As commonly accepted, the stakes of sustainable development (SD) are altogether highly serious, complex, and diverse, spanning from changing living standards to the very future of mankind. Although it has long been argued that such complexity warrants radical change in the way “good” knowledge is conceived of and produced, it appears that much of sustainability research – including its grounding in social sciences – has yet to extend beyond the institutionalized precepts of natural science with regard to validity and credibility. In this context, this paper argues that crucial insights can be developed by opening social sciences’ theorizing process to undervalued forms of knowledge including art in general, and science-fiction literature in particular. To support this argument, current non-scientific productions of knowledge are reviewed in light of alternate conceptions of epistemological value. The potential of science fiction as thought experiments and inspiration for both problematizing and theory building in the social sciences is explored. In particular, certain science-fiction texts are thoroughly examined to illustrate how current problems pertaining to firm theories and management practice may be “discovered” (or made visible) only through science-fiction hindsight . The rapid urbanisation and infrastructure development projects have increased infinite property regeneration and construction projects in the developed countries. This study aims to examine the current construction waste management literature, including key authors, university networks, and relevant information systems, considering four selected countries, including Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. This paper uses a set of novel metrics, query-based search, and social network analysis techniques for evaluating a dataset of 2337 papers published in a decade by authors from different countries investigating the topic of recycling and reuse of construction and demolition waste in order to identify prominent researchers, influential universities, collaboration practices, and research trends. The dataset of publications is collected from Scopus and analysed using a set of network analysis techniques and statistical analysis. An additional dataset of keywords was collected from the Twitter pages of engineering firms and other relevant industry organisations to assess any possible connection between industry interests and research trends. In order to present a solid analysis of the current investigations in the field, a scientometric analysis along with a rigor statistical method was adopted to carefully identify trends, detailed sub-topics, and the materials investigated in the literature. A probit regression model for testing differences between countries in recycling practices was utilised in the STATA environment. The findings show a set of network analysis and clusters that can help scholars to set their future studies based on the current advances and limitations identified in the literature. Within the dataset, 42% of publications referred to concrete waste, whilst only 2.2% included glass, 2.5% included brick, 4.3% included steel and none included wood, which shows the most common building materials have not been fully covered in the literature. Only 48 publications, or 7.4% of the dataset, originated from the three selected concrete-focused journals. It was also found that information systems appeared in the database lately; however, there is less discussion in the literature on how the integration of Geographic Information System (GIS), Buidling Information Model (BIM), 3D Printing and geo-spatial data analysis can help waste management in the field of construction. The bibliographic analysis of the selected cases shows that universities in Canada and the US exhibit more evidence of domestic collaboration and industry partnerships than universities in Australia and the UK. Additionally, there is evidence to suggest that publications with at least one industry co-author are more likely to address the issue of regulation. Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to identify the indicators that are currently disclosed in corporate sustainability reports. Canada is used as a case study in the paper. The indicators were identified based on a content analysis of 94 Canadian reports from 2008. The findings show that a total of 585 different indicators were used in the reports. Differences in the use of indicators between sectors were described. The use of indicators suggested by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) was also investigated. It was found that 31 of the 94 reports included indicators explicitly identified as GRI indicators. The most reported GRI indicators appeared in 28 of the reports, while the least reported indicators appeared in 5 of the reports. This paper provides one of the first in-depth reviews of the indicators used in corporate sustainability reports. Waste collection management plays a crucial role in controlling pandemic outbreaks. Electric waste collection systems and vehicles can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of sanitary processes in municipalities worldwide. The waste collection routing optimization involves designing routes to serve all customers with the least number of vehicles, total traveling distance, and time considering the vehicle capacity. This paper proposes a dynamic location-arc routing optimization model for electric waste collection vehicles. The proposed model suggests an optimal routing plan for the waste collection vehicles and determines the optimal locations of the charging stations, dynamic charging arcs, and waste collection centers. A genetic algorithm and grey wolf optimizer are used to solve the large-sized random generated NP-hard location-arc routing problems. We present a case study for the city of Edmonton in Canada and show the grey wolf optimizer outperforms the genetic algorithm. We further demonstrate the total number of waste collection centers, charging stations, and arcs for dynamic charging needed to ensure a minimum required service for electric vehicles throughout Edmonton's entire waste collection system. Aside from attracting tourists, there has been an increased interest in marketing to tourists who behave more sustainably as this can contribute to both a higher yield and overarching Sustainable Development Goals. This study investigates the contribution that intermediaries and the use of social marketing have on the sustainable attitudes and behaviour of Canadian tourists. Given their roles within the travel industry, examining the influence intermediaries might have on sustainable travel behaviour is an important objective. This paper applies both the Knowledge, Attitude, Behaviour (KAB) Theory and Social Marketing Theory (SMT) through a survey of 1003 Canadian holiday travellers. A quantitative study using exploratory factor analysis, correlations and regression are applied to reduce the data to manageable variables and to test their inter-relationship and effects on the travellers' sustainable behaviour. In doing so, a contribution to theory has been made through the identification of a more complex KAB paradigm and the usefulness of combining both theories. It was also found that using intermediaries and their social marketing platforms, such as local tourist destination websites, social media, and travel agencies, was a statistically significant contributor to more sustainable behaviour. The findings of this study address the gap in the literature related to combining SMT with the sustainable knowledge-attitude-behaviour paradigm and the lack of Canadian context in this regard. With sustainability behaviour by Canadian leisure travellers lacking and only one in two travellers having knowledge and attitudes for more-sustainable behaviour, the principal practical implication arising from this research is the need for intermediaries to enhance the promotion of sustainable travel behaviour within their social marketing strategies. Based on the Web of Science Core Collection databases from 1990 to 2018, a scientometric analysis of 1,284 academic works related to forest carbon sequestration is carried out to characterize the intellectual landscape by identifying and revealing the basic characteristics, research power, intellectual base and research hotspots in this field. The results of this work show that: ① the number of publications in forest carbon sequestration research has increased rapidly and the research in this field is in its "growth stage"; Forest Ecology and Management is the most productive journal and Forestry is the most popular subject category; ② the most productive authors and institutions in this subject area are in the USA, China and Canada, with the Chinese Academy of Sciences being the key institution performing such research; ③ in the sample, 9 papers have played a key role in the evolution of the field and laid a solid foundation for future research; ④ Keyword clustering analysis showed that the main research topics in the domain of forest carbon sequestration could be summarized as: (a) temperate forest; (b) forest management; (c) uncertainty analysis; (d) forest floor; (e) REDD; (f) net primary productivity. Meanwhile, keyword bursts analysis showed that the new research hotspots or research frontiers mainly concentrated on changes in the carbon storage and carbon sequestration potential of secondary forests and tropical forests, plant litter carbon storage and contribution to total ecosystem carbon storage, and new national forest inventories (NFIs). Through in-depth analysis of forest carbon sequestration research, this paper provides a better understanding of development trends that have emerged in this field over the past 29 years, which can also offer reference for future research. Abstract: Much debate has taken place within the mineral policy community about whether or not meaningful progress has been made towards more sustainable practices. This paper investigates the changing approaches towards sustainable development undertaken by the Mining Association of Canada (MAC) over a period of approximately 20 years. The analysis begins in the early 1990s when MAC initiated the Whitehorse Mining Initiative (WMI) and concludes in 2010 when the association was operating under a strategy entitled Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM). The goal is to consider the nature of the learning that has taken place towards sustainability within the mineral industry using the case of a leading national mining association. The investigation was undertaken through a literature review as well as key informant interviews with stakeholders affected by the Canadian Mining Industry. Findings suggest that MAC’s approach to sustainable development has shifted from an ambitious and holistic partnership involving a range of stakeholders to a focused, member-specific agenda that addresses a few performance issues. The transition to TSM was based on lessons learned through working with the WMI and subsequent efforts. It reflects broader corporate tendencies to address social and ecological issues through corporate social responsibility initiatives. The implications of these trends suggest that voluntary initiatives in and of themselves should not be expected to replace the comprehensive regulatory responsibilities historically provided by government. Abstract: The effective management of mine tailings involves the control of several environmental impacts and legal requirements. Six tailings site management and closure scenarios were developed for a copper zinc underground mine located in Quebec (Canada) and compared using life cycle assessment (LCA). Two options are considered for the mine operation: tailings can be sent to the tailings disposal area where they are submerged or they can be partly used for backfilling. For each of these two operation options, three alternatives are presented for mine closure: (a) submerged tailings, (b) partial desulphurization with a cover of desulphurized material and (c) a cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) made of natural soils followed by revegetation. The goals of the study were to draw the inventory of these management scenarios from the development to the post-closure phase, to assess and compare their environmental impacts and to determine the importance of the land-use impact category. The potential impacts for each scenario were evaluated using the IMPACT 2002+ LCIA method. The results of the performed LCA indicate that for mine development and operation, scenarios where tailings are partly used as backfill for underground stopes appear to lead to larger impacts in 11 of the 14 midpoint categories since the backfill plant operation consumes a greater amount of material and energy. For a site closure period of 2 years, the CCBE option creates the greatest impacts, since it requires much more effort than the other techniques. The results for the post-closure phase have been analysed separately since they have a larger uncertainty. They appear to modify the comparative assessment results. The building sector is a significant source of GHG emissions and has great potential for emission reductions. The effectiveness of building energy codes on energy savings and emission mitigation is of a primary concern to policy makers, but uncertainty in cost and benefit in different regions complicates code selection and implementation. The impacts of a specific building energy standard vary depending on the heating system's thermal efficiency and the heating fuel's carbon intensity. This paper examines the GHG emissions due to space heating for new construction single-detached households in Canada under different building energy codes and enforcement scenarios. The two codes considered are the BC step code and Passive House criteria. Three scenarios are examined reflecting different levels of stringency of standards between 2020 and 2032. The results show both BC step code and passive house criteria can help mitigate the space heating GHG emissions. There is no significant difference between the BC step code and the passive house criteria from the perspective of GHG emission reduction in the province of British Columbia; however, when implemented nationwide, the passive house criteria is 12% more effective in abating space heating GHG emissions than the most stringent level (i.e. Step 5) of BC step code. • Passive House criteria are more effective in reducing the space heating GHG emissions than BC Step Code does in Canada. • BC Step Code and Passive House criteria can save space heating GHG emissions of new single-houses by 77% and 89%, respectively. • Building performance standards are less impactful in regions where fuel carbon intensity is low. • No notable difference is found between BC Step Code and Passive House criteria in GHG emission reduction per unit area in BC. Currently, the majority of the biomass residue around Canada is incinerated or landfilled although it still contains valuable chemicals such as tannins (2–40 wt %) that can be extracted and used for the production of materials such as binder for plastic composites or polyols for polyurethane foam synthesis. However, most of the methods currently used for tannin extraction involve chemicals such as sodium sulfite, sodium bisulfite or sodium carbonate that are not environmentally friendly. Therefore, cleaner methods of tannin extraction are re-emerging as alternatives. Today's challenge is the development of a cleaner method that is both cost-effective and environmentally friendly as the one presented in this paper to extract tannins from Canadian yellow birch bark. The bark was mechanically pretreated and then tannins were extracted using hot water. Tannin solution was separated from the residue by centrifugation and the tannin extracts were recovered after water evaporation. The yield, energy and water consumption results of the entire extraction process showed that tannin extraction and tannin isolation are the most energy consuming steps (23% and 72% of the total energy used, respectively). Three methods were developed to reduce the energy and water consumption while maximizing the tannin yield. The first method assisted by ultrasound allows to save up to 34% of energy and 34% of water for the tannin extraction step while increasing the tannin yield by 52% compared to the hot water extraction method. The second method which recycles the extract solution allows a consumption reduction of 39% in energy and 40% in water for the tannin isolation step compared to the hot water extraction method. Interestingly, a combination of Methods provides the most significant energy and water reduction for the whole process, which are 41% and 49%, respectively, while increasing the tannin yield by 13% compared to the hot water extraction method. The COVID-19 pandemic is producing significant economic and social cost globally. As a cure or a treatment is yet unavailable, social distancing is considered the key way to prevent it. Mobility restrictions and confinement measures implemented across the world are considered to help reduce air pollution. However, empirical examination of the link between public mobility changes and air pollution during the COVID-19 period remains unavailable. This paper examines the short and long run impacts of mobility changes on carbon monoxide (CO) emissions by employing three dynamic estimators on a panel of 35 countries covering daily data from 15 February to April 17, 2020 - a period when most countries went into strict lockdowns. Findings show a consistent evidence at the all-countries level and across regions that long-run indoor mobility increases reduce CO emissions, while outdoor mobility increases across places such as transit stations, workplaces, grocery & pharmacies, retail & recreation, and parks drive up emissions. Among the regions studied, Europe excluding the EU and the UK (−8.4%), followed by East Asia and the Pacific (−4.3%), sees a larger emissions reduction from increased indoor mobility. While short-run effects are limited in general, emissions in US-Canada respond to indoor and outdoor mobility changes in both the short (1.1%) and long run (−1.4%). Findings overall indicate that reducing unnecessary outdoor mobility could help in maintaining air quality in the post-pandemic world. The significant e-waste generation in the Americas represents an important opportunity to implement waste recovery systems under the Circular Economy model. This paper conducts an exploratory analysis about the e-waste management at different scales (economic blocs and country levels) in the American continent, emphasizing generation patterns, e-waste fluxes and the regulation frameworks in Brazil and Canada in order to identify how the e-waste management options are driven by specific legal, economic, and environmental criteria. The methodology includes a review of literature covering information and indicators for both quantitative and qualitative analysis and comparison between selected countries regarding positive and negative aspects of e-waste management systems in each jurisdiction. The finds suggest that although Brazil and Canada have differentiated scope of regulation, both ratified the Basel Convention, have an action agenda that seeks to prioritize the management of hazardous substances, as well as lack of harmonized regulation, low control of the e-waste illegal trade and traceability. The identification of e-waste flows and comparison of economic blocs and countries is a still little explored theme and emphasizes the need for adequate legal measures to implement circular economy strategies to avoid impacts and enhance the value recovery of these materials in the production chain. Doing so could support harmonized regulation, new business models and increase sustainability levels for citizens through solutions that integrate policies and practices between and within economic blocs. This paper presents an embodied GHG assessment of a completed highway bridge renewal project in Canada and offers new insights on the strengths and limitations of BIM-based GHG assessments. Bridges play a critical role in transportation infrastructure. As reducing environmental impacts has taken on increasing urgency across the construction sector, bridges have received relatively little study. A quantitative understanding of the embodied greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in bridges is needed to inform future infrastructure planning, design, and construction. Recent efforts to streamline environmental assessment in construction have led to the creation and adoption of Building Information Model (BIM)-based embodied GHG assessments, taking advantage of the quantity take-off functionality of BIM. However, as BIMs are rarely developed with environmental assessment as the primary goal, their effectiveness for GHG accounting can be limited. GHG assessments of the case study bridge using a BIM prepared before construction and using material and energy quantities records collected on-site during construction, are compared. Using only the quantities from preconstruction BIM, the embodied GHG for the case study bridge is 1.3 × 106 kgCO 2 e. After the adjustments for on-site data collection and factors commonly excluded from BIM, such as on-site fuel use from machinery, it rises to 4.06 × 106 kgCO 2 e, an increase of 212%. Occupant behavior in residential buildings has a direct impact on the effectiveness of energy-saving measures. In order to realize a buildings' carbon mitigation targets, the impact of individual occupancy profiles needs to be integrated with building simulation models. This paper introduces a decision support framework as a potential solution to make energy performance upgrade choices based on different occupancy profiles. This framework has been demonstrated through a case study of two single-family detached homes in Canada, which were highly instrumented with sensors for monitoring energy input and output. The case studies represented two common occupancy profiles-(1) a family of four (consisting of 2 working adults and 2 teenagers); and (2) a retired couple. Firstly, calibrated energy models were developed by using one-year energy use data collected through an intrusive load monitoring technique. Secondly, energy upgrade combinations were considered for each profile and tested for additional investment, payback period and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Lastly, the most suitable combination of energy upgrade for each profile was ranked using a multi-criteria decision-making method (e.g., TOPSIS). Results indicated that the retired couple used more energy than the family of four and required energy upgrades with usually higher payback periods to achieve the same level of GHG emission reduction. Although the steel industry has brought economic benefits to many countries, it also has non-negligible impacts on the environment. To understand how steel production impacts are shared among trading countries, it is necessary to conduct a large scale research from environmental and economic perspectives. This study applies the life cycle assessment method (LCA) to analyze 12 major iron-mining and steel-making countries, calculate a "unit GDP impact intensity" and finally raise an issue of "pollution allocation" among actors in international trade. Results firstly indicate that normalized ecotoxicity impacts over the entire production chain are among the most crucial consequences of iron and steel production, even higher than the non-negligeble impacts from carbon emissions. Secondly, performance indicators indicating the relation between environmental impacts and economic activities can be calculated as Total Normalized Impacts/GDP, an inverse measure of environmental versus economic efficiency. South Africa has the highest unit GDP impact intensity (4.35E-4 TNI/US $) in iron mining, while Canada has the largest intensity in steel manufacturing (5.81E-3 TNI/US $). Thirdly, countries that largely benefit from importing "pollution-free" materials, should share a proportional responsibility for the environmental pollution caused by iron&steel processing activities occurring in their trade partner countries: this is especially true for China and US, which are major iron ore/steel importing economies. The recommendation in the 2019 Canada Food Guide to diversify protein sources in the human diet could lead to less red meat consumption by Canadians. The main goal of this paper was to assess the potential impact of the reduction in red meat consumption on the carbon footprint of Canadian livestock production. Beef, pork and broilers were used to represent Canadian carcass based food commodities. Three scenarios for allowable red meat (beef and pork) consumption were tested based on medical recommendations of 15.9, 23.7 and 27.6 kg (boneless weight) per capita per year. Maintaining national dietary protein intake at 0.39 Mt was the main boundary condition for the projected reduction of red meat. A spreadsheet model was used to interpolate published Greenhouse Gas emission estimates from 1981 to 2006 for beef, pork and broiler production to 2017. This model accounted for the life cycles, age-gender categories, and supporting crop complexes of each livestock type. Three production scenarios based on two different apportionments of allowable red meat to beef and pork, and two alternative beef diets, were combined with the three medical scenarios to formulate nine projected consumption recommendations. These projections generated the slaughter animal live weights, Greenhouse Gas emissions from their production, and their protein contents. All nine scenarios required a major expansion of broiler production to satisfy the required national protein intake. The amounts by which the nine scenarios reduced Greenhouse Gas emissions ranged from 0% to 31% of the 32.6 Mt of total national CO 2 e emissions for the production of these three commodities in 2017. Situated within the broader climate justice movement, the fossil fuel divestment movement calls for both public and private divestment of financial holdings from fossil fuel companies. This paper examines the extent of fossil fuel divestment campaigns at higher education institutions across Canada, examining key actions and tactics through which campaigns are initiated and mobilized, as led by students, faculty, alumni, and climate justice organizations. Findings indicate that out of 220 accredited Canadian universities and colleges, there are 38 active divestment campaigns and 6 institutions that have committed to varying degrees of divestment. Tactics used in these campaigns include signing of petitions, sit-ins, rallies, and protests, facilitated through face-to-face and online platforms. Findings revealed significant borrowing of actions and tactics among campaign actors, including the use of branding and messaging from international environmental organizations, such as 350.org. This research contributes to scholarly knowledge on how higher education divestment movements and related campaigns for institutional change can influence how sustainability and climate change are addressed. Based on the fact that Canada withdrew from the Kyoto Protocol in 2011, we study the impact of loosening environmental policies on firm performance of Canada's oil and gas sector. This work complements the limitation of Porter hypothesis, which only discusses the relationship between environmental policy and corporate performance from the perspective of strict environmental policy. Hence, this paper adopts investment efficiency to measure corporate performance, and discusses the long-term and heterogeneous effects of loose environmental policies on Canada's oil and gas firms. We find that environmental policy loosening is conducive to improving the investment efficiency of oil and gas enterprises, which declines annually and becomes stable at a certain level. However, the biggest beneficiaries of loose environmental policies are low-investment-efficiency firms and oil sand firms. This result suggests that environmental policy loosening can boost the performance of enterprises, but alleviate their emission reduction pressure at the same time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent studies have shown that Canada will not achieve its 2030 emission reduction targets outlined in the Paris Agreement. Canadian energy decision makers are now at a crossroad between making sound fiscal decisions and ramping up efforts to meet emission reduction commitments. Approximately 195,000 people are living in off-grid Canadian communities, with most of these communities relying on fossil-fuel based energy generation. Hybrid renewable energy systems provide a novel solution to address the high costs of off-grid energy and Canada's emission reduction targets. To address the competing stakeholder priorities in off-grid energy planning (e.g., economic, environmental, and system performance), the authors of this paper employed a generalizable combinatorial-based alternative ranking method. Alternative energy technology combinations were simulated to calculate key performance indicator values. The framework allows decision makers to identify the most feasible energy system based on their priorities. A case study was performed with the developed framework for a small off-grid community in British Columbia, Canada. The results show that feasibility of energy system configurations vary greatly based on differing decision-making priorities. The case study also confirmed that hybrid renewable energy systems have better environmental performance compared to their fossil fuel counter parts, but at a significantly higher cost. The industrial sector, accounting for 30% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, is among the key drivers of human-induced climate change impacts. Given this volume of emissions, the sector could play a critical role in mitigating climate change. Canada is among the top 10 global GHG emitters and its industrial sector is responsible for more than 39% of national emissions. GHG emissions from the sector increased by almost 32% between 1990 and 2017 and are expected to almost double by 2050 if no measures are taken. This paper aims to evaluate how different technical and economic factors have contributed to the increasing GHG emission trends in Canada's industrial sector between 1990 and 2014. The Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index was developed and implemented as the decomposition method. Results from the analysis suggest that activity level is the biggest contributor to the increase in industrial GHG emissions between 1990 and 2014, which ranged from 5 Mt CO 2 eq in 1994 to 57 Mt CO 2 eq in 2014 compared to the 1990 baseline. Increased shares of low carbon-intensive industries and fuel switching contribute to GHG emission mitigation from the sector. The structural change is responsible for GHG reductions of 1.1 and 23.4 Mt CO 2 eq in 2000 and 2014, respectively. The impacts from fuel mixs and increased shares of low-carbon fuel ranged from −1 Mt CO 2 eq in 1994 to 16 Mt CO 2 eq in 2011. Despite improvements in process-energy-intensity (i.e., the energy consumed per unit of product) in several industries, changes in economic energy intensity (energy consumed per unit of economic output) have resulted in increased GHG emissions. These changes are mainly driven by changes in the process-energy intensity of the oil sands mining sector, the largest contributor to industrial GHG emissions in Canada. This paper addresses a two-stage stochastic model for eco-efficient reverse logistics network design (RLND). The goal of this optimization model is to maximize the expected profit and minimize landfilling activities to give more incentive for materials recycling. The model considers a source separation option that allows the separation of the collected materials at an early stage of the reverse logistics channel. The quantity of waste generated and the recycling rates at the collection centers are uncertain due to the variable quality of the collected batches. We solved the model using the combination of a Sampling Average Approximation procedure and the ε-constraint method. An application is illustrated through the case study of wood waste recycling from the construction, renovation, and demolition (CRD) industry in the province of Quebec in Canada. This research reveals that the source separation strategy provides better control of the impact of uncertainties, not only for the economic performance but also from an environmental perspective. The results highlight the necessity to evaluate the interaction between environmental policies to avoid conflicting objectives. Abstract: This special issue introduction reviews the objective and focus of the special issue: an overview of Canadian contributions to, and expectations for, cleaner production–pollution prevention (CP-P2) and its integration with sustainable development. It provides the Canadian definition of P2, briefly reviews policy and legislative background and growth and evolution of CP-P2 in Canada, and the importance of public debate. It notes the challenge of using CP-P2 to move toward sustainability. It concludes by highlighting the content and findings of the papers in the special issue which explore the key issues driving the evolution of CP-P2 in Canada, the contribution of various players to this evolution and the synergies between CP-P2 and other sustainability initiatives. This paper introduces a comprehensive modeling framework for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). The model incorporates water demands, allocation, and uses under various climate, population, and economic scenarios as well as management strategies. Model outputs include crop yields, municipal water use, power generation, recreational reservoir uses, and environmental flows. Further, a novel indicator integrates many key model outputs for social, economic, and environmental assessment based on the basin-scale water balance, and provides a comprehensive and clear representation of basin conditions to improve the understanding of IWRM trade-offs. When applied to the Bow River Basin, Canada, as a practical example, this Bow River Integrated Model (BRIM) revealed through a set of modeling scenarios that (1) only the industrial demands exceeded the water license in the high-water demand and reference scenarios due to population growth and economic development; (2) increased cooling tower shares for thermal power plants was the most effective policy in managing industrial demand; and (3) the new indicator reflected both basin-scale conditions and sectoral water stresses. Finally, model results from three gaming scenarios showed socio-economic and environmental trade-offs clearly, providing users with guidance in developing a comprehensive view of basin-scale water security, and hands-on experience to support IWRM. In this paper, we explore the role of leadership in advancing sustainable and resilient construction and development projects. In contrast to leadership theories that focus on individual differences in leadership styles or competencies, we explore what leaders actually do to promote sustainable construction within a complex, multi-stakeholder context. Using the Zibi Development in Canada's capital as a case study, we uncover five specific leadership tasks required to drive more sustainable urban transformations: inspirational work, integrative work, identity work, implementation work and institutional work. Our primary contribution is therefore the development of the 5I model of sustainability leadership, grounded in practice, which describes the hard work of leadership required for One Planet Living. Process simulation (PS) is essential in the eco-efficiency assessments (EEA) of dairy processes. PS indeed allows for analysis of a process with the help of mathematical models, and its ability to calculate rapidly and at little cost the mass and energy balances of processes can be exploited in the EEA of dairy processes. This paper presents the prototype of a workable tool developed to carry-out EEA of dairy processes. A process modelling and simulation software dedicated to dairy processing was developed to perform inventories of material and energy flows (IMEF) on the processes modelled by the software user. Addition of impact analysis data sets allowed for quantification of the potential environmental impacts associated with the modelled processes. Inputting economic data then made it possible to calculate the economic value associated with the modelled processes. Gathering these methods within a single numerical tool enabled EEA of any process modelled by the software user, but also identification of the hot spots and the opportunities for eco-efficiency improvements, comparisons of several scenarios of raw milk valuation, and assessment of their economic viability. In order to present the operational aspect of the developed prototype, it was used to compare the EE of fluid milk processing in Canada (Quebec) and the United-States of America. Individual eco-efficiency indicators (EEI) results showed that the potential environmental impacts were higher for the American scenario in three damage categories out of four. Economic viability results showed a slight advantage for the American scenario. Considering all the EEI, the comparative EEA did not offer evidence of a general benefit of one scenario over the other.
