This study aims to explore the direct and indirect impacts of the Carbon Emission Trading System (CETS) on the green transition development (GTD) of Chinese cities. This paper constructs a GTD evaluation system from the perspective of prevention and governance at the source, in terms of carbon reduction, pollution reduction, green expansion and growth, and measures the GTD performance of 281 cities based on the EW-TOPSIS model. It is found that the average increase in GTD of the sample cities from 2006 to 2020 is 3.40 %, the GTD progress of the 281 cities has a considerable positive spatial autocorrelation, with the GTD progress of the CETS pilot cities being significantly bigger than that of the non-pilot cities. Further this paper adopts the spatial difference model (S-DID) to scientifically identify the influence mechanism and heterogeneity of the direct and spatial effects of CETS on city GTD, and the results show that CETS has a positive effect on the GTD of both local and neighboring cities. Propensity score matching (PSM) is used to further corroborate these findings. The study also shows that CETS improves local GTD by promoting green innovation, rationalizing industrial structures, and enhancing energy efficiency in cities. Nevertheless, the ensuing siphon effect hinders nearby cities' levels of energy efficiency, industrial structure rationalization, and green innovation. The policy effects of CETS are more significant in large cities, eastern cities, old industrial areas, and non-resource-based cities. The Carbon Emission Trading (CET) system has been independently implemented in dozens of countries to protect the environment. Meanwhile, there are efforts underway to establish a Unified Global CET (UG-CET) system, which aims to better coordinate emission reduction efforts worldwide and protect the global environment. However, these efforts overlook the issue of data security, which may raise concerns for countries considering participation in such a system. In this paper, we propose a UG-CET system that addresses data security concerns. Firstly, it safeguards cross-border data by not requiring countries to share detailed data, but only providing generalized data. Secondly, it is capable of auditing data, ensuring data consistency even in the absence of shared original data. Therefore, it respects the interests of participating countries by not only protecting their own data but also ensuring the authenticity of data shared by other countries. Finally, the proposed scheme is validated using authentic CET data, and the results demonstrated that it can maintain a high efficiency while achieving a verification accuracy of 99.6%, effectively ensuring the security and consistency of the data flow in carbon emission trading. As major strategic development areas in China, the provinces around the Yangtze River are facing the pressure of large aggregate CO 2 emissions and high per capita CO 2 emissions. The study on the pathway of reducing CO 2 emissions and increasing carbon sequestration will help China better clarify the ways realize the goals of carbon peak and carbon neutrality as soon as possible. In this paper, the extended STIRPAT model and OLS regression were used to establish a prediction model to estimate the CO 2 emissions during 2010–2060 under different scenarios. Meanwhile, the InVEST model was used to estimate the carbon sequestration, and the comparison with the CO 2 emissions was analyzed. The results show that Qinghai and Yunnan have achieved the goal of carbon neutrality in 2010. Under the low-carbon and energy-saving scenario and the baseline scenario, all provinces within the study area are anticipated to attain their emissions peak by 2030 or earlier, and the CO 2 emissions peak value of the whole study area is 3111 Mt and 3199 Mt, respectively. While under the high emissions scenario, only Chongqing and Qinghai will reach the emissions peak in 2030, and the whole study area will reach the emissions peak in 2040, with peak value of 3470 Mt. Under the three scenarios, the whole study area cannot achieve carbon neutrality before 2060. Only Sichuan and Hubei can achieve carbon neutrality in 2050 and 2060 under the low-carbon and energy-saving scenario. All provinces and municipalities in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River are facing huge pressure of emissions reduction. To mitigate climate change and achieve sustainable development, Chinese governments have introduced "1+N" "dual-carbon" policy system aimed at reducing CO 2 emissions, transforming energy structures and controlling pollution. An effective policy mix and synergy is crucial for achieving the emission reduction targets and for ensuring the effectiveness of the policies, and it is therefore of great practical importance to provide a pathway for policy synergy based on assessing policy effectiveness. This paper selects three policies, namely the carbon Emission Trading System (ETS), Coal Control and Clean Utilization (CCCU), and Green Financial Reform and Innovation Pilot Zone (GFPZ), sets up ten scenarios, adopts difference-in-differences (DID) models to evaluate the impact, and give a pathway for policy synergy. The results show that ETS, CCCU, and GFPZ policies have significant positive effects on carbon emission reduction, energy structure transformation, and industrial environmental pollution control, respectively; CCCU has synergistic effects with ETS and GFPZ policies in controlling coal consumption and increasing the completion of industrial pollution control investments, respectively; while GFPZ policies have conflicting effects with CCCU and ETS in reducing carbon emissions and coal consumption, the GFPZ policy has conflicting effects with CCCU and ETS in reducing carbon emissions and controlling coal consumption. Finally, the study proposes a phased policy support system around carbon emission reduction in the power generation industry, energy structure transformation, and industrial environmental pollution control before 2030 and from 2030 to 2060. The carbon emission trading scheme (CETS) has been gradually introduced in China to control carbon emissions and boost economic and social development. The existing literature has evaluated the market potential of pilot CETSs or a certain industry, yet no study has focused on the industrial sectors to be covered in the national CETS to analyze trading flexibility and the sector inclusion sequence. This study presents an analytical framework for estimating market potential (i.e., potential gains and carbon emission reduction potential) and industrial sector inclusion sequences for China's national CETS using by-production models. Three simulation scenarios (i.e., no-trading scenario, power sector trading scenario, and multiple-industry trading scenario) and two trading modes (i.e., contemporary and intertemporal trading mode) are simultaneously considered. The novel evidences are: (i) There would be 39.93% (27.7 trillion CNY), 65.26% (273.0 trillion CNY) and 159.42% (666.7 trillion CNY) national aggregated potential gains of CETS in intertemporal power sector trading scenario, contemporary multiple-industry trading scenario and intertemporal multiple-industry trading scenario, and they would help save 3.60%, 5.18% and 6.05% of CO 2 emissions reduction, respectively. (ii) CO 2 emission permits would transfer from nonmetal minerals, ferrous metals, and electricity, to paper making, non-ferrous metals, petrochemicals, and chemicals under the intertemporal multiple-industry trading simulation. (iii) Based on the principle of potential gain maximization, it is recommended that the sector of smelting and processing of non-ferrous metals should to be included as the next sector in national CETS. Due to rigorous environmental legislations and competitive economics worldwide, a growing number of companies are devoted to recovering and remanufacturing used products. Consequently, over the past few decades, the management of manufacturing/remanufacturing systems has been receiving increasing attention from researchers and companies leaders. Most of the existing research papers in the literature considered that remanufactured products have the same quality and price as new ones. However, in practice, the market perceives new items as higher quality products rather than remanufactured items. This paper aims to bridge the gap in research on manufacturing/remanufacturing supply chain, by investigating an optimal storage and manufacturing/remanufacturing planning, while taking into consideration the difference between new and remanufactured items, random machine failures, carbon constraints and distinct random customer demands for both items types. Furthermore, to make our system more realistic, it is assumed that the return rate of used items depends on the sales in the past periods, machine repair time is stochastic and set-up time period is not negligible. In this study, two models are developed, considering carbon emissions or not, to determine the optimal values of the manufacturing/remanufacturing period lengths and serviceable stock capacities of new and remanufactured items. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the impact of set-up cost, percentage of returned used items, machine availability, carbon cap and carbon trading price on the optimal storage and production planning. Moreover, the influences of carbon cap, carbon trading price and percentage of returned used items on carbon emissions have been analyzed. The results reveal that set-up cost, percentage of returned used items and machine availability have significant impact on storage and production planning of new and remanufactured items. In addition, the results indicate that a lower carbon cap and/or a high carbon trading price, induce the producer to collect and remanufacture used items and curb carbon emissions. Currently, numerous studies are being conducted on various carbon reduction policies, but their synergies have been poorly investigated. This paper examines the synergistic effect of combining emissions trading schemes (ETS) and energy carbon-content taxes (ECT), using China as a case study. A computable general equilibrium model is used to identify the synergistic effect of these two carbon mitigation policies. The results show that the synergistic effect helps to reduce GDP loss by approximately 5.44 billion CNY, which accounts for 2.83% of the overall GDP losses caused by ETS and ECT. Additionally, the synergistic effect reduces an additional 5.25 million tons of CO 2 emissions and decreases the negative impact on social welfare resulting from the two policies. Although these achievements are commendable, there are costs associated with this synergy. The effect on energy security presents mixed results and leads to increased carbon leakage. This study investigates the impacts of carbon pricing policies on firms' greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We include two carbon pricing policies: carbon tax and emission trading scheme (ETS) at national and sub-national (province) levels, measured as policy existence (binary variable) and carbon price (continuous variable). Firms' GHG emissions are measured as total emissions and emission intensity. Using unique recent firm-level data from 2010 to 2021 from three East Asia countries (Japan, the Republic of Korea (ROK), and the People's Republic of China (PRC)), we obtain the following key findings. First, the national carbon pricing policy significantly reduced firms' GHG emissions and GHG emission intensity in Japan and the ROK. The greater the carbon price, the greater the impact. Second, the subnational carbon pricing policies implemented in two provinces of Japan (Saitama and Tokyo) decreased firms' GHG emissions. Third, heavy industry sectors such as energy, utilities, and industrials experienced a substantial decrease in GHG emission intensity due to the carbon pricing policy. Finally, our main results are robust to different model specifications and various measures of firms' GHG emissions. Although literature studying the ex-post impact of carbon pricing on emissions at country and sector-level is abundant, this paper contributes to the existing literature providing empirical evidence of the impact of carbon pricing policies on firms' emissions using firm-level data, which is highly limited especially in Asia. Under carbon cap and trade policy, engineering machinery firms have engaged in remanufacturing and invested in carbon emission reduction technologies. However, they often struggle with a lack of funding, but carbon quota financing offers a solution. Taking a capital-constrained engineering machinery remanufacturer as the research object, this paper first formulates four decision models, i.e. (no capital constraints, no financing), (capital constraints, no financing), (capital constraints, carbon quota repurchase financing) and (capital constraints, carbon quota pledge financing), then the equilibrium results are compared. Finally, the numerical simulations are performed to study the impact of carbon emission reduction and quality uncertainty of recycled products. The results show that if remanufacturers possess adequate carbon quotas, carbon quota pledge financing can always improve profits effectively, otherwise, the effectiveness of financing strategies depends on the difference between extra profits and financing costs. Both financing strategies can increase the output of new products and reduce that of remanufactured products. Increasing the quality threshold of recycled products is beneficial for remanufacturing, environmental protection and profits. Investing in carbon emission reduction benefits remanufacturing and the environment, however, it reduces remanufacturers' profits in the short term. This paper introduced a non-monetary double-entry carbon accounting method for entities in emission trading systems. To mitigate climate change, government imposed carbon emission reduction obligations to industries with high greenhouse gas emissions. These entities performed carbon accounting and participated in emission trading systems annually to acquire enough carbon emission allowance and carbon credit to compensate for their greenhouse gas emissions. However, current carbon accounting methods did not account for their long-term emission potential, undermining assessment for their sustainability and financial risk. The proposed method addressed this issue by considering carbon emission allowance and carbon credit as carbon asset and emission potential from life cycle and embodied carbon assessment as long-term liability. Double-entry accounting methods were used to introduce carbon accounting balance sheet, income statement and flow statements and to enable carbon management performance analysis by analogous methods on financial statements. A case study was performed with historical data of an emission trading system. The result revealed that an entity's future carbon emission potential imposed significant long-term liability and risk. Its relevant emission expense was also found to incur much earlier before the actual emission. This paper presents an energy-sharing market coupled with carbon emission trading to quantify peer-to-peer energy-sharing markets' economic and environmental influences. We establish a bi-level peer-to-peer energy sharing market considering the interaction between energy prosumers and the system operator. An interaction algorithm and generalized Nash game are thus applied in this work. With the simulation results, we find that the daily disutility of provincial systems is reduced by about 7 ¥ when time-of-use electricity rates are applied. This pricing strategy can encourage prosumers to participate in energy-sharing transactions. The subsidies of electricity rates, carbon prices, and renewable energy investments can improve the social welfare of the whole system. Considering the development of power generation technology and emission reduction targets, the change of optimization parameters in the next 30 years is analyzed in the example. It can be concluded that the total CO2 emission in 2050 will be reduced to almost half of that in 2020 in the energy-sharing markets. The subsidy of renewable energy generation and stricter CO2 emission constraints may accelerate the reduction of carbon emissions. Global warming can be solved with carbon trading. When carbon emissions become a commodity, it can be a powerful motivator for companies to optimize production capacity and innovate technologically. The goal of this paper is to examine the way in which China's carbon emissions trading policy (CET) influences firm technological innovation in seven pilot regions, using a sample of firms in eight high-carbon industries. We employ difference-in-difference (DID) as well as DID-based propensity score matching (PSM-DID) models to investigate the influence of China's carbon emission policy on firms' technological innovation by using 4745 observations of 749 A-share listed firms in eight high-carbon industries in mainland China from 2007 to 2021. According to the findings, China's CET policy significantly boosts firms' technological innovation, and this beneficial effect persists even after a series of robustness tests that change the policy's implementation year and the technological innovation measure. Further analysis shows that this positive effect is heterogeneous across high-carbon industries and firms with different ownership. In addition, based on the external governance perspective, we find that CET policy performs better in firms in high-carbon industries with a sizable portion of ownership held by institutional investors. This study suggests the effectiveness of CET policy in promoting firms' technological innovation, confirms empirical evidence for Porter's hypothesis, and provides a basis for Chinese firms to achieve their emission reduction targets by improving technological innovation. Given that a fixed national emission reduction target could be achieved by imposing emission quotas among multiple decision-making units under administration, a novel nonlinear programming approach is proposed in this paper to obtain an optimal emission quota allocation in a least-cost way. Marginal emission abatement cost curves are simulated based on the environmental performance and marginal emission abatement costs measured in a set of parametric directional output distance functions with multi-inputs and multi-outputs. Further, the proposed model is applied to empirically investigate the optimal carbon emission quota allocation for China’s building construction industry among thirty-three provinces in three different regions. The results indicate that the relatively developed eastern region in China has higher marginal emission abatement cost and can be imposed with more emission quotas, while the central and western regions can undertake more emission reduction. Approximately 74 million RMB can be saved by implementing the optimal emission allocation (proposed in this paper) as compared to a uniform emission quota allocation. Due to the severe problems caused by global warming, controlling greenhouse-gas emissions has become an emerging topic around the world. This situation has led to the implementation of legislations, forcing companies to implement innovations and strategies to prevent and reduce carbon emissions. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of implementing these strategies and the estimation to fulfill Kyoto Protocol's 2020 target Emission Trading Schemes needs to be further analysed and discussed. This paper reviews the existing greenhouse-gas-emission legislations, as well as carbon offset programs worldwide. A detailed analysis on carbon emissions trends related to emissions penalties is shown for six major countries. The optimal penalty for emissions trading schemes is also analyzed and discussed in this paper. Future changes that could be made to the existing programs for enhancing their effectiveness are also suggested. It was found that carbon emissions decreased around 1.58% per year since Emission Trading Schemes implementation. Around 23.43% of CO 2 reduction can be reached after 10 years of Emission Trading Schemes implementation, compared to the trend when Emission Trading Schemes was not implemented. Despite Emission Trading Schemes implementation is extremely recent, based on the existing data a first estimation of the optimal penalty in achieving the maximum carbon reduction it was found around US$90.22 per tonne. Carbon emission trading, a market-incentive environmental regulation, plays a critical role in leading China towards the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. To improve the national carbon emission trading in China, we analyze the effects of the policy in pilot provinces and pilot A-share listed firms from 2008 to 2016. Particularly, to explore the pilot policy's environmental and financial impacts, this paper applies a difference-in-difference method. After the robustness check, the results confirm the carbon emission trading pilot's significantly positive impact at both firm- and province-level regarding carbon emission reduction. Meanwhile, corporate innovation seems to partially mediate the relationship between the policy and corporate carbon emission reduction. Plus, the policy promotes firms' market-based financial performance but such impact on accounting-based financial performance is insignificant. Ultimately, the operational mechanism of the policy is proved to be effective. In this paper, industry- and firm-level carbon emissions databases are established via environmental extended input-output table, which fill the research gap of China's firm-level carbon emissions. To ensure the reliability of results, the list of covered firms is sorted out manually in accordance with the disclosed data of seven carbon trading markets. Our results are meaningful for avoid productivity reduction and mechanism re-design in the context of the national carbon emission trading launched in 2021. Specifically, encouraging firms to further improve their productivity and competitiveness by innovation could eventually achieve a win-win situation between economic performance and environmental merits in the long run. Under the current technical conditions and power mix in China, flexible modified thermal power units must provide enough flexibility resources for new power system since the potential of flexible resource has not been fully used. In this paper, a bi-level model is proposed to characterize the decision behavior of the generation company in the case of individual rationality and generation-side coordination. The model fully considers the concrete conditions of China and the technical differences between thermal power units in the multi-market (including energy, ancillary services and carbon emission trading market). The bi-level model could be reconstructed into an equivalent MILP model which can be solved directly. The strategic bidding behavior of small capacity units in the energy market show the urgency to enhance the transmission of deep peak regulation price compensation signals. The coupling of multi market is likely to be the most effective policy package to guide large-scale units to play a supporting role and small-scale units to assume the regulating function to play a role in the transition to a low-carbon future. Global warming caused by the excessive combustion of fossil fuels has become the focus of the international community. China's carbon emission reduction policy plays a vital role in international climate change, carbon emission neutrality and domestic environmental pollution control. This paper summarises the progress of China's Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) pilots from 2011 to 2021, including trading volume, carbon emissions price, and the effect of carbon emission abatement. By calculating the carbon emissions intensity decrease rate of China's ETS pilot and non-pilot regions, the ETS and carbon emissions tax are compared in terms of emission reduction effectiveness, emission reduction cost and implementation resistance to provide theoretical support for the Chinese government to select and develop carbon emission reduction tools. The development of the Clean Development Mechanism in China is also compared with China Certified Emission Reduction (CCER), and the offsetting rules of CCER are summarised. After the whole analysis and assessment, the results show that from 2013 to 2018, the average carbon emissions intensity decline rate in the ETS pilots was 7.3% and that in non-pilots was 4.29%. Some problems of China's carbon emissions trading market are also concluded. The trading volume is small (only 43.4 × 106 t in 2020) and is discrepant greatly in the different ETS pilots. The carbon emissions price is low (only 33.45 Yuan/t in 2020), with high volatility and large price differences among the ETS pilots. Based on the existing problems, this paper proposes some suggestions for improving China's emission trading market and provides theoretical and decision-making support for promoting carbon emission reduction and neutralisation for China. Carbon emission trading mechanism is an important market-based instrument to address global climate change. The auction ratio and price of carbon emission allowances (CEA) are cores of the carbon emission trading mechanism. What combination of CEA auction ratio and auction price is most conducive to carbon emission reduction for emission control enterprises? There are still relatively few studies conducted on this issue, and there is no clear answer from the views of theory and practice. In this paper, the AIM/Enduse model was used to analyze the changes and differences of installed power capacity, power supply, energy consumption and carbon emissions in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Great Bay Area (GBA) with different combinations of CEA auction ratios and prices. Moreover, the best pathway of energy transition was explored in the power industry of the GBA, and the best combination of CEA auction ratios and prices was identified in the GBA. The results show that: (1)The carbon emission constraint starts to work only when the auction ratio of CEA is increased to 50% and the auction price is increased to 60 CNY/ton (Scenario p 3). When the auction ratio of CEA is 100% and the auction price reaches 120 CNY/ton (Scenario p 5), a low-carbon transition of the power sector in the GBA can be achieved. (2) Under scenario p 5 , the total cost of power transition rises and then falls. And the cost of carbon in the power sector increases exponentially as the auction ratio of CEA and the auction price rise. However, the growth in the cost of power supply is relatively flat, which shows that appropriate carbon trading mechanism can improve the economic benefits of power sectors. With the increase of installed capacity of clean low-carbon energy generation and power supply, as well as the decrease of local power cost in the GBA, the proportion of outsourcing power can be appropriately reduced in the future, with an aim to reduce the external dependence of electricity to ensure the security of energy supply. In the end, it suggests that cities in the GBA should give full play to their regional advantages and establish a unified carbon emission trading market in the GBA as soon as possible. Emission trading scheme (ETS) is considered as a tool to reduce emissions at a low cost, which can effectively promote the carbon peak and carbon neutrality. As the main participants in the carbon emission trading (CET) market, the behavior and strategies for governments and different types of enterprises affect the final emission reduction performance. Taking the national carbon market as an example, this paper constructs a tripartite evolutionary game model including governments and power generation enterprises with different emission reduction capacity to analyze the possible game situations in the development process of the CET market. The results show that with the development of the CET market, the governments and power generation enterprises will have different game results. In order to achieve the optimal stable equilibrium and maximize carbon emission reduction, governments should improve regulatory efficiency and formulate appropriate incentive strategies for excess emission reduction and punishment strategies for insufficient emission reduction. In addition, the initial willingness will not affect the final strategy choice of the three parties. Reasonable free carbon quota ratio, lower technology emission reduction cost and higher carbon price can stimulate the enthusiasm of governments and enterprises to reduce emissions. Supply Chain (SC) coordination, quality requirements, and environmental issues are the main areas of interest within the field of inventory management. Few studies have integrated these concepts into an inventory problem despite its overwhelming necessity. In this direction, this paper deals with a vendor-buyer SC under the Vendor-Managed Inventory with Consignment Stock (VMI-CS) agreement. According to the agreement, the vendor bears the buyer's financial holding cost in return for the storage of products in the buyer's warehouse. Further, each shipment involves a random fraction of repairable items, which need to be withdrawn from the inventory system. Unlike the existing literature, when repair policy is evaluated not to be profitable, these items can either be salvaged or scrapped in the present problem. In other words, this study aims at providing a decision support model to find the optimal withdrawal policy as a joint quality and lot-sizing policy. To fulfill sustainability criteria, carbon emissions are incorporated into the total cost of SC by considering carbon tax and cap-and-trade regulation. The optimum solution is found through an analytical algorithm. Finally, a numerical study is conducted to illustrate the applicability of the models and gain managerial insights. The results show that the performance of VMI-CS for all withdrawal policies is superior to traditional mechanism, but its cost-saving sharing has to improve. In addition, the sensitivity analyzes reveal that the fraction of imperfect items greatly affects the optimal withdrawal policy. The carbon footprint is widely recognized as an indicator of greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon footprint modeling based on life cycle assessment is applied to assess the average contribution of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere of the orchard system during the growing season. Apple fruits are exposed to various conditions in the supply chain, causing mechanical damage, scars, and bruises, ultimately reducing product quality and shelf life. Research has been conducted over the years to identify the proper packaging method to minimize shipping losses and minimize emissions while on transportation from production sites to distant markets and during storage. The objective of this paper is to maximize the profit of apple orchards with effective control over emissions and deterioration. Therefore, the data was statistically analyzed by using Mathematica 9.0 software and a graphical solution is obtained. A real-life case study at an apple orchard in Jammu and Kashmir will be used to validate a mathematical model with theoretical and computational procedures. This model is highly desirable and effective and is acceptable to businesses, traders, and consumers because it minimizes the losses through small scratches, better retention of appearance, crispness, flavor, and long shelf life with a high net profit, high cost of performance, and affordability for consumers. The key findings were recorded using sensitivity analysis and its application in apple orchards is elucidated through managerial insights. With the gradual strengthening of environmental supervision, how to coordinate the relationship between environmental protection and full employment has become an urgent problem. This paper takes China's carbon emission trading policy as the research subject, and evaluates the employment effect of carbon emission trading policy from the perspective of micro enterprises under the premise of considering the spatial spillover effect. This paper aims to verify and evaluate the spatial spillover effect of China's carbon emission trading pilot policy on labor demand of enterprises, and study the effect of environmental policies on the employment market in China. Firstly, from the theoretical point of view, comparisons among the differences of the average employment effect, spillover effect and total effect coefficient of carbon trading right policy are conducted under the condition of spillover effect or not. Secondly, from the empirical perspective and relaxing the STUVA conditions, a Triple Difference Model is constructed to evaluate the impact of carbon emission trading policy on the labor demand of enterprises by using the panel data of China A-share listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2008 to 2017. Thirdly, this paper further uses the synthetic control method to analyze the employment effect differences of carbon emission trading policies in different pilot areas of China. The results show that the carbon emission trading policy in China has an about 10 percent positive spillover effect on the neighboring provinces in pilot areas. Moreover, the results indicate that China's carbon emission trading policy has generated some employment dividend, and the total effect is about 11.5 percent when the ratio of individual sample is considered. In addition, the impact of carbon emission trading policy on employment is gradually increasing, and the employment effect of carbon trading policies in different pilot areas of China is quite dissimilar. The findings of this paper confirm the positive employment effect of China's carbon emission trading policy, and have important policy implications for the further promotion of the national carbon emission trading market. The carbon emission trading scheme (ETS) is an important market-based tool for achieving carbon neutrality. The existing research on the policy effect of ETS focuses on emission reduction effect and economic effect respectively. In view of this, based on the connotations of green development, we embed fairness toward the environment into the green development system to construct a balanced green development index to measure two dimensions, namely, efficiency and fairness. Theoretically understand the synergistic development effect of economic growth and ecological environment quality produced by the implementation of ETS, and analyze the impact of carbon market on balanced green development. A multiperiod difference-in-differences (DID) model explores the impact of China's carbon ETS on the green equilibrium level by using Chinese provincial panel data for the period 2008–2018. First, the results demonstrate that China's balanced green development level is weakly coordinated overall and there is a global spatial agglomeration effect. Second, the carbon ETS has significantly improved the level of balanced green development which promotes the degree of coordination between green economic growth and environmental fairness, offering an effective path that includes efficiency and fairness for green development. Third, there are regional differences in the impact of the carbon ETS on green equilibrium levels. The effect on the western region of China was significantly higher than that of the central and eastern regions of China. Compared with the existing research, the study breaks the single research perspective. From the perspective of efficiency and fairness, we propose improvements in the construction of a national unified carbon emissions trading market to strengthen the balanced green development. This paper examines the risk spillover effect between the carbon market and the stock market in China and the role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on this effect. Employing Beijing, Hubei, and Guangdong carbon markets, we apply time-domain and frequency-domain spillover approaches and find that during the Chinese stock market crisis in 2015, risk spillovers from the stock market to the carbon market were more pronounced. Additionally, CSR firms are more dominant as information transmitters than those non-CSR (NCSR) firms in the carbon market. However, plausibly, due to the infancy of carbon trading, our results show that the level of connectedness between the carbon market and the stock market in China is relatively low. There is a high degree of overlap between market entities covered by the carbon emission trading (CET) market and electricity market, and the two markets are closely related. Therefore, it is of great significance to analyze the impact of the CET market mechanism on the bidding strategy of generation companies (GENCOs) and electricity market clearing results. In this paper, the problem of GENCOs participating in both the day-ahead and real-time balancing electricity market within the CET mechanism is studied as a multi-leader multi-follower (MFML) Stackelberg game problem. The GENCOs are considered as leaders in the game who decide on the submitted bid and offer in terms of price and quantity to maximize their expected profit in the market, while both the clearing problems of day-ahead and real-time markets are considered as followers on the lower level. In order to expand the Nash equilibrium of the considered MFML game, the shared-constraint approach is applied to modify this problem. Two typical Nash equilibria of the proposed MLMF game are analyzed and discussed. Finally, the results of the simulations conducted on a modified IEEE 39-bus system and a real 2778-bus system indicate that GENCOs tend to submit bids with a higher price in the market under the global Nash equilibrium solution. Within the CET mechanism, the overall market clearing share of the gas-fired units increases from 21.76% to 18.1%–32.33% and 19.51%, at valley and peak loads, respectively. The implementation of market-based climate policies represented by the emission trading system (ETS) is an important path for countries to participate in global climate governance and achieve the goals of carbon emission peaking and carbon neutrality. Whether the covered firms can improve financial performance through bearing responsibility for cutting emissions, a "win-win" of environmental and economic achievement, is an important way to evaluate the effectiveness of ETS. Based on the Chinese A-share listed firms in industrial sector during the period of 2010–2017, this paper employs PSM-DID method to investigate the impact of China's pilot ETS on financial performance of the covered firms. The results show that the covered firm's financial performance is improved by the implementation of pilot ETS, which can increase firm's ROA by 0.01 unit. Specifically, the pilot ETS can significantly improve the financial performance of non-state-owned firms, without affecting state-owned firms. Similarly, the financial performance improvement is more significant for firms in non-energy industries. Furthermore, the pilot ETS can motivate the covered firms to gain financial profit through cutting carbon emission as a mediation path, and the mediation effect size of carbon emission intensity is 0.001. Besides, firm's innovation ability weakens this mediation path, and the well-developed institutions in pilot area, proxied by high degree of marketization, only weaken the first part of the path, namely, carbon emission reduction led by ETS. • ETS achieves a win-win of carbon emission reduction and financial performance improvement. • The improvements by ETS are heterogeneous in ownership and industry. • Firm's carbon emission intensity plays a mediation role. • Firms can gain more benefit under the ETS regulation if the market monopoly is strong. Promoting environmental regulation and the reduction of carbon emissions is of great significance for sustainable development. China plans to achieve the following two major goals by 2030: to experience the peak of carbon dioxide emissions, and to be at the forefront of innovative countries in the world. The realization of these goals not only depends on the environmental regulation policy regarding carbon emissions, but also on the development imbalance among Chinese provinces. The Porter hypothesis theory holds that environmental regulation can produce the Porter effect and promote enterprise innovation; but few studies focused on the causal relationship between environmental regulation and the regional Porter effect. Under this framework, this paper uses propensity score matching - difference in difference (PSM-DID) to construct a quasi-experiment on China's carbon emissions trading pilot policy. Dynamic panel data models are used to double test whether environmental regulation can stimulate the regional Porter effect. The empirical results show that: (1) Under the premise of multiple robustness tests (whether quasi-experimental or dynamic panel data models), no evidence was found in support that environmental regulation can stimulate the regional Porter effect. (2) The reason why the regional Porter effect does not been stimulated is that the pollution heaven effect, induced by the carbon emissions trading pilot policy, counteracts the Porter effect to a certain extent. (3) There is no non-linear relationship between environmental regulation and the regional Porter effect. (4) The analysis of spatial heterogeneity shows that environmental regulation cannot stimulate the Porter effect in the eastern, central, and western regions of China. This suggests that it is very important to establish appropriate provincial environmental regulation objectives and to conduct appropriate environmental regulation in combination with local resource endowments. This study provides quantitative evidence toward an in-depth understanding of the relationship between environmental regulation and the regional Porter effect as represented by the pilot policy of carbon emissions trading. This paper proposes a new prediction method incorporating a set of measuring models applicable to the financing efficiency of China's carbon market to quantify such market's maturity, trading risk coefficient, and financing income. Our theoretical analysis indicates that the price of carbon emission quota essentially affects the financing efficiency of carbon market. While a robust safeguard measure to obtain a respectable income from carbon market financing is the long-term average quota price exceeding the initial quota price. Empirical findings derived from China's emissions trading scheme pilots reveal that these pilots can be divided into the growth-oriented market (i.e. Guangdong whose financing capacity is always significant), the balance-oriented market (i.e. Shanghai and Hubei whose quota pricing mechanisms and the financing level of carbon markets both maturely develop), and the risk-oriented market (i.e. Beijing whose quota price runs at a high-level with an intense financing income volatility). It is therefore achieved that carbon market's maturity level and quota price volatility are both robustly explicable for different financing effects among these pilots. Global climate change caused by human activities has posed a huge threat to the environmental governance and sustainability of human-being. Fortunately, the carbon emission trading scheme, a powerful tool for reducing carbon emissions, has been established in many countries to slow catastrophic climate change thus promoting human well-being. The nexuses between energy and European carbon markets have been extensively studied due to the grim reality of global climate change. However, no literature to date has examined the multi-scale associations between China's energy and regional CET markets. This paper aims to fill this gap by utilizing a proposed wavelet-based multi-scale investigation framework to explore the information spillovers and dynamic dependence over different time horizons. The original energy and carbon return series are decomposed by the MODWT method. The TVP-VAR-based connectedness and the DECO-FIGARCH model are then built at each selected wavelet component. The wavelet coherence method is also applied to depict the time-frequency dependence. The empirical results demonstrate that the information spillovers at multivariate time-scales are heterogeneous. Generally, GDEA and the crude oil markets act as the information spillover net-transmitters at the raw data level and all wavelet scales. The dynamic spillovers present significant time-varying features and a similar evaluation trajectory. Besides, we offer strong evidence of a low dynamic equicorrelation between China's energy and regional CET markets, suggesting the portfolio diversification benefits. Furthermore, the information spillover and dependence are proved to be more significant at longer time horizons. Finally, the energy-carbon portfolios offer diversification opportunities, and the risk reduction effectiveness varies with wavelet scales. The power sector accounted for almost 40% of China's carbon emissions in 2017 and is the first industry that is included in the national carbon emission trading system, so the current paper carries out a study on allocating carbon emission allowances for the power sector. Different from previous studies, this article assigns carbon emission allowances to 30 provinces according to the principles of equality, efficiency, and sustainability rather than just using the principles of equality and efficiency. We first apply the entropy method to initially distribute emission allowances to 30 provinces. Then, a zero-sum gains data envelopment analysis (ZSG-DEA) model is used to test the efficiency of quota allocation and redistribute the carbon quotas across 30 provinces continuously until the quotas are optimally distributed. The results show that in 2030, Guangxi, Hainan and Shandong have the most emission quotas, while Heilongjiang, Jilin and Qinghai have the least emission quotas. In this paper, we theoretically analyze how regulatory authorities employ price discrimination to improve environmental effectiveness of emission trading schemes under different emission permit allocation rules. We set up a duopoly model to characterize environmental effectiveness of emission trading schemes, and explore the connections between environmental effectiveness and price discrimination. Our findings indicate that under benchmarking rule the environmental effectiveness of emission trading scheme is efficiently improved after the introduction of price discrimination. In contrast under some conditions, regulatory authorities can not improve the environmental effectiveness of emission trading scheme with grandfathering rule by the price discrimination. Our findings add to the environmental effectiveness theory of emission trading scheme by developing a framework where we allow for price discrimination and different emission permit allocation rules. This paper proposed a model-based framework to optimize the energy-water-emissions nexus (EWEN) for regional electric power system (EPS) planning. The framework integrated the superiority of bi-level programming (BLP), two-stage stochastic programming (TSP), mix-integer programming (MIP), interval parameter programming (IPP) models and carbon emission trading (CET) mechanism, which could effectively deal with the planning problems in the EWEN optimization process. BLP helped decision makers make leader-follower choices when they have conflicting preferences. TSP with IPP could validly address the uncertain information expressed as interval values with unknown distribution. MIP was introduced as an efficacious tool to evaluate the capacity expansion potential in EPS. CET mechanism was applied to reinforce the CO 2 mitigation effect during the EWEN optimization process. Then the proposed framework was applied into a case study in Shanxi Province, a main thermal power base in China to optimize the EWEN. Results indicated that the power supply structure was inclined to show a low-carbon transition trend in the planning periods. Meanwhile, coupled with the strict water conservation policy, every 5% reduction in carbon emission density would lead to an average decreasing rate of 8% for SO 2 , 3% for NOx and 12% for PM. Based on panel data from 2007 to 2016, this paper investigates the carbon abatement effect of China's pilot Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) and the influencing paths of the policy at both national and regional level by using Difference in Differences model and parallel multiple mediator model. The results reveal that the policy has reduced the total carbon emission reduction by 13.39%, with an upward abatement trend annually. Secondly, a systematic framework containing technique effect, composition effect and allocation effect is proposed to further investigate the influencing mechanisms of the achieved emission curbing effect. It reflects that the policy has not yet promoted the low-carbon innovation completely, only innovation of high-quality played an effective mediating role. Meantime, two other influencing channels of industrial upgrading and optimized resource allocation are verified. Thirdly, policy's heterogeneous impacts are detected by classifying China into three representative regions according to economic and geographical differences, where western China experiences the strongest emission abatement by 21.57%, whereas central China and eastern China is 9.83% and 6.65% respectively. Fourthly, assessments of the regional influencing mechanisms show that the mediating role of high-quality low-carbon technology innovation is only significant in the western region, while the other two regions tend to have rebound effect. Besides, the promotion of industrial upgrading is positively related to the development levels of regions, with the improvement of 18.01% in the eastern region, followed by 17.34% and 12.46% in the central and western region. Finally, the optimization of the resource allocation has not been promoted regardless of the regions.
