As a traditional energy and carbon intensive sector, it becomes imperative for the global paper industry to realize green development. This paper aims to provide guidance for the green transformation of global paper industry by evaluating the global paper industry green development level in a systematic and dynamic way. This paper employs text-mining method to develop paper industry green development evaluation indicator system and adopts market-extended LCA model and entropy-TOPSIS method to calculate the paper industry green development level of 48 countries/regions. The results show that during 2000–2030 the paper industry green development level of developing countries improves faster than developed countries, where those of developing and developed countries increase from 0.3369 to 0.3938 and from 0.5120 to 0.5517 respectively and the gap between them narrows from 0.1751 to 0.1579. The comparative analysis reveals that the paper industries of developed and developing countries are in different green development stages. Developing countries, represented by China, improve greatly in economic and social dimensions, but decline seriously in ecological dimension due to enlarging resource consumption and environmental damages. On the contrary, developed countries tend to saturate in economic and social dimensions and have been improving fast in ecological dimension, gradually realizing the decoupling of industrial economic development and environmental damages. Abstract This work investigates the use of biomass fly ash (BFA) and an alkaline effluent (AEF), both generated from the Kraft pulp industry, in the preparation of geopolymeric binders and mortars for construction applications. BFA replaced the metakaolin (MK) while the AEF substituted the distilled water used to dissolve NaOH pellets. The mix design aims to maximize the amount of both the wastes and to optimize the materials properties, such as workability and mechanical performance. At the same time, also the environmental impact decreases enhancing the materials' sustainability and facilitating the circular economy. For the previously optimized BFA/MK ratio (70/30 wt.%) several NaOH/Na 2 SiO 3 ratios and water to AEF substitutions were tested. The best performance was achieved for the alkaline activator having one part of NaOH and three parts of Na 2 SiO 3. According to the main results, the biologic AEF can totally replace the distilled water in the NaOH preparation. Thus will increase the sustainability of the novel materials. Subsequently, the optimized binder was used – with and without AEF - to manufacture mortars with various binder/aggregate ratios. It is concluded that the formulations with a binder/aggregate mass proportion of 1:3 showed the best mechanical performance (compressive strength surpassing 20 MPa, class M20) and the replacement of distilled water with AEF did not affect the specimens final properties, but enhance the materials sustainability. Furthermore, in the pursuit of sustainability, manufacture and curing were conducted at ambient conditions (20 °C, 65% RH), avoiding any external source of energy, involving simple, reproducible, and low-cost processes. Pulp mill excess sludge (PMES) is an industrial biomass waste containing high moisture, many organic compounds, and highly concentrated adsorbed organic halides (AOX). The safe disposal and recycling of PMES using an environmentally friendly and sustainable treatment represents a major challenge. In this study, alkali-oxygen cooking was used to recover cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) from PMES while removing AOX in a one-pot process. Single-parameter experiments showed that more than 95% of AOX was effectively removed, meeting sewage emission standards, and greater than 70% of cellulose was recovered as CNC. A response surface experimental design was then applied to determine the optimal reaction conditions. A temperature of 200 °C, alkali dosage of 35 wt%, and reaction time of 5 h resulted in an AOX removal rate of 96.57% and CNC recovery rate of 73.78%. The results of this study not only demonstrate an environmentally friendly, sustainable strategy for the treatment and recycling of PMES into CNC, And the alkali-oxygen cooking process can be applied other cellulose-rich industrial wastes to recover value-added products. The pulp and paper industry accounts for approximately 5% of total industrial energy consumption and contributes 2% of direct carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions from industries. World paper and paperboard demand and production are increasing significantly, leading to an increase in this sector's energy use and CO 2 emissions. Although current studies identify a wide range of energy-efficiency technologies that have already been commercialized for the pulp and paper industry, information is limited or scattered regarding new energy-efficiency technologies that are not yet fully commercialized. Development of emerging or advanced energy-efficiency technologies and their deployment in the market will be crucial for this industry's mid- and long-term energy saving and climate change mitigation strategies. This paper compiles available information on energy savings, environmental and other benefits, costs, and commercialization status for 25 emerging technologies to reduce the energy use and CO 2 emissions. The purpose is to provide a well-structured comprehensive review on these emerging energy-efficiency technologies for engineers, researchers, investors, policy makers, pulp and/or paper companies, and other interested parties. By-product utilisation has been recognised as a promising cleaner technology has attracted intense attention from both academic and industrial fields in the last decade. Industrial society is currently experiencing constraints imposed by our resource system by improving existing processes or finding newer way of waste utilisation. Waste and by-product streams from existing industrial sector (e.g. paper and pulp industry, meat industry) could be used as renewable resources for production of useful artefacts. This article mainly features recent research progress towards the utilisation of by-product in leather processing. This study was carried out to evaluate the propriety of using by-product black liquor from paper and pulp industry as filler in leather processing. Chemical modification of the black liquor has been performed to sustain a good compatible between the chemicals and also to improve the diffusion of black liquor into the leather substrate. The modification of black liquor was done by means of pH adjustment. Effect of filling nature of black liquor on strength property, softness nature, related morphological changes, and the dyeing property of the leather samples were thoroughly investigated. The results reveal that chemical composition of black liquor modulated by the pH adjustment was found to have a strong influence on the overall performance of the leather substrate. Integrating supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) in cement-based construction materials is a key strategy for reducing environmental burdens and the greenhouse gas emissions related to cement production. Supplies of commonly applied SCMs such as fly ash and blast furnace slag are becoming limited, and therefore the search for alternative SCMs is of high significance. The present research investigates the viability of four paper mill ashes collected at different stages from the same incineration process as SCMs at different cement substitution rates (5–30 wt%). The ashes were first classified depending on their mineralogical and chemical composition, and their contribution to strength development of the prepared mortars is examined. Furthermore, the effects of the ashes on the hydration kinetics and the fresh and hardened properties of the prepared mortars were studied. The obtained results showed that a high level of SCM replacement accelerates the early hydration reactions and decreases the setting time. In addition, the incorporation of paper mill ashes increased the bound water depending on the ash type and resulted in strength development of the mortars at low replacement percentages (5–10 wt%). Conventional paper-based wear-resistant materials employ thermosetting resin as the matrix, which are difficult to recycle, degrade, and reuse after scrapping, causing significant damage to the environment. The discovery of sustainable alternatives has the potential to transform the manufacture of paper-based wear-resistant materials into low-carbon production. Herein, inspired by spider webs sticking to insects, a paper-based self-lubricating material based on lignin-cellulose-graphene layered interwoven structure was prepared by lignin-cellulose assisted in-situ exfoliation of flake graphite strategy. Graphene adheres to the interlaced cellulose network, while lignin serves as a natural binder and matrix, resulting in a 2D interwoven structure. The paper-based film had a 37.4% greater average mechanical strength than pure lignin-cellulose film and a 56% lower toughness loss following heat treatment. The friction coefficient of the film-15% was 173.3% lower than that of the film-10%, and it maintained long-term stability with a low wear rate of 3.9 × 10−3 mm3/(N·m). Furthermore, the end-of-life products were recycled five times and can be degraded by microorganisms in moist soil within 40 days. The degradation products can provide nutrients for plant growth, indicating that it is a potential alternative to non-recyclable wear-resistant materials for light-duty transmission machinery. Production systems are being restructured to close production cycles via implementing circular economy (CE) practices. The planted tree industry in Brazil has shown potential for applying CE practices due to its efficient use of resources and inclination towards environmental innovation. However, some gaps and difficulties have been observed in several industrial segments so that the logic of the circular production system is put into practice more effectively and intensely. In this context, the aim was to investigate the use and impacts of CE practices in the Brazilian planted tree industry by sector of operation and scale of enterprises based on the ReSOLVE framework. Data were collected from 34 companies that answered a questionnaire, corresponding to 47.2% of Brazilian planted tree industry companies. Data analysis involved univariate and multivariate statistical techniques, considering the grouping of companies by sector of activity (forest producer, pulp and paper, and timber processing) and scale (small, medium, and large). The results revealed that "pulp and paper" and medium- and large-scale companies had the most significant application of CE practices and reported more significant impacts. The paper and cellulose manufacturing industry generates significant quantities of waste, including an extremely humid sludge, which is considered to be an effluent with high environmental liability for the manufacturer. Studies have shown that this waste sludge may be utilized in construction material, such as mortar for fixing blocks, as well as for ceiling and wall coatings that use ceramic masonry as a sealant. The recycling of pulp and paper industry waste sludge has important environmental benefits, by preventing soil and water pollution caused by inadequate disposal and by reducing the depletion of natural resources, such as lime, used in cementitious materials. This study analyzed the sustainability of incorporating such waste into cement-based mortars. Tests were conducted replacing lime, one of the most expensive mortar components with high environmental impact, with waste sludge in contents of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. Analysis was then performed on the samples to assess the primary technical characteristics of these incorporated mortars, such as the consistency index, heat of hydration, content of incorporated air, water retention, mechanical strength and the capillarity coefficient. The results were compared with the results of the characterization tests that were performed on the waste material. The results showed that for use in wall and ceiling mortar coatings, the level of incorporation should not exceed 10%, because higher levels yield lower values of mechanical strength resistance, incompatible with market requirements. This result is probably due to the low heat of hydration of the waste material which generates slower reactions. On the other hand, higher levels of waste material content, above 10%, are appropriate convenient for mortar used to fill small repairs in masonry that do not require control of properties. Social life cycle assessment (S-LCA) is a tool to address social impacts from a life cycle perspective. This work presents the first S-LCA of the Portuguese pulp and paper sector. It presents the social risks and the positive social impacts of the sector, which have not been extensively covered in the scientific literature. Two different approaches were used to compile the social life cycle inventory based on input-output analysis. Approach 1 was based on impact analysis of changes in added value. Approach 2 was based on structural path analysis, supporting the disaggregation by production levels (or tiers). The functional unit was the production of 1 United States Dollar in the Portuguese pulp and paper sector. In the social life cycle impact assessment, the social risk assessment was conducted using the Social Hotspots Database. The positive impacts were addressed considering indicators of employment and remuneration, namely total employment, number of employees, labor compensation, and compensation of employees. Based on Approach 1, the results of the social risks showed the Portuguese pulp and paper industry, commerce and forestry sectors, and the Spanish forestry sector as the critical sectors. Based on Approach 2, Portugal and Spain continued to be the countries having the greatest social risks. Other contributions of countries were identified at different production levels, particularly China in tier 3. In both approaches, the stakeholder category 'worker' was the most critical. Regarding the positive social impacts, Approach 1 showed that Portugal and Spain contribute to the highest employment level linked to the pulp and paper, commerce, and forestry sectors. Approach 2 supported the differentiation of employment and remuneration at different production levels. Tier 2 (direct suppliers) presented the highest employment level and persons engaged and the lowest remuneration level. The results showed that Approach 1 provides a faster and more aggregated assessment of social risks and positive social impacts. Furthermore, Approach 2 allowed a more detailed evaluation, providing a better understanding of the social risks and positive social impacts on the supply chain. Thus, Approach 2 is encouraged for different applications since it produces a better understanding of where social risks and positive social impacts occur, providing better guidance for corrective measures and decision-making. Abstract Industrialization and urbanization are the key drivers to threaten the environmental quality and natural resources. Traditionally, pulp and paper industry has been highly reliant on forest based resources for its escalation. Shortage of forest based raw materials, strict environmental regulations and policies have compelled the industry to seek for alternate raw materials for its production. Mills are now focusing on exploring the potential of different agro wastes such as cereal straws and bagasse etc. In present research, sugarcane trash, one of the most abundant agro residues in India, was investigated for its capability in pulping and bleaching. Chemical characterization of sugarcane trash showed that it contains 40.4% cellulose, 33.2% hemicelluloses, 17.4% lignin and 6.45% ash content with 2.76% silica. To cook sugarcane trash with soda pulping method, 14% alkali charge, 15 min time and 162 °C temperature was found to be optimum and pulp of kappa no. 19.8 was prepared that exhibited good strength properties. Bleaching of pulp was carried out using elemental chlorine (Cl 2), hypochlorite and chlorine dioxide (ClO 2) based sequences. Replacement of Cl 2 with ClO 2 has significant impact on strength properties and effluent characteristics. Oxygen delignification stage was incorporated prior to ClO 2 that resulted in improved optical properties of pulp with noticeable reduction in wastewater load. This paper elaborates the need of using sugarcane trash in paper mills with environment friendly pulping and bleaching processes to combat with the problem of waste management, wastewater load reduction during bleaching and substitute for wood based raw materials in papermaking. Abstract This paper examines the mechanical properties and durability of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) containing 100% coarse recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) and industrial by-products. The by-products, including waste paper sludge ash (PSA), fly ash (FA), silica fume (SF), and metakaolin (MK) of different proportions (5%, 10%, 15%) in RAC, were used in two methods: replacement and addition methods. The use of by-products (mineral admixtures) to mitigate the low quality of RAC was demonstrated through experimental outcomes in this study. The addition of industrial by-products was presented as a promising alternative for the addition of more Portland cement in RAC to enhance RAC's quality. The results showed that the strength and durability of RAC containing mineral admixtures in the addition method were higher than the addition of more cement or the replacement method. Notably, PSA considerably improved the mechanical properties of RAC at an early age, and it substantially improved the resistance of RAC to acid and sulfate attacks. At 90 days, FA and MK improved mechanical properties of RAC greater than SF and PSA did. Among combinations, the proportions of by-products in RAC of 5% PSA, 10% SF, 15% MK and 15% FA can produce the highest performance of RAC with 100% coarse recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). Aeration, as a process in pulp and paper wastewater treatment, uses the greatest share of the energy. Therefore, if the energy efficiency of the treatment has to be improved, the focus must be on aeration. A key finding from the trials conducted for this paper, with effluent from a paper and pulp mill, was that the oxygen transfer coefficient could be doubled and the chemical oxygen demand could be decreased by 25%, if the effluent was pre-treated with 30 mg/l of aluminium coagulant (equivalent to 9.4 tonnes per day of AVR to 20000 cubic metres of effluent). Decrease in oxygen requirement implies decreases in aeration energy use. Pulp and paper mill effluents are not as biodegradable as municipal sewage, and the improvement in oxygen transfer properties of the effluent will have a positive influence over a longer period of time in the biological treatment. If the sludge is digested anaerobically, pre-treatment will also result in doubling the potential for methane generation. A holistic analysis of modifications to processes entails a study of the economic and environmental consequences as well. While the economic aspect is beyond the scope of this paper, only the net global warming as an environmental impact category has been studied, by taking recourse to specific emission coefficients. Of the four dosages of ferric aluminium sulphate considered in this analysis, the net greenhouse gas emissions are the least – 426 kg carbon dioxide equivalent per day when the daily consumption is 9.4 tonnes. An energy audit is a primary step toward improving energy efficiency at the facility level and ensuring a clean production. The pulp and paper sector is one of the most energy-intensive industries in Morocco. This article aimed at identifying energy conservation opportunities at a Small and Medium-sized paper industry. The audit results together with their financial viability are presented regarding the analysis of energy consumption and electrical quality issues. The paper introduces an action plan for a more efficient energy use of some specific applications such as furnaces and compressed-air installations as well. The recommended energy efficiency measures have the potential of saving about 347.85 MWh of electrical energy and 101.78 MWh of thermal energy corresponding to reductions of 11.48% and 2.22%, respectively. The total investments related to the application of the action plan is approximately 290.53 kMAD and the global payback period does not exceed one year. Abstract To evaluate the effect of brown-rot fungi Oligoporus placenta and earthworm Eisenia fetida on decomposition of paper mill sludge, the paper mill sludge was mixed with cow dung in 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% proportions and changes in physicochemical quality of waste mixtures was carried out for 28 days. All waste mixtures were treated with: Setup-I (E. fetida), Setup-II (O. placenta) and, Setup-III (E. fetida + O. placenta). A decrease in total organic carbon, C/N ratio and cellulose but an increase in total kjeldhal nitrogen, total phosphorus, total potassium and pH was recorded. The paper mill sludge in 50–75% proportion in feedstock showed the better results and rate of mineralisation were in order: Setup-III > Setup-I > Setup-II. The proportion of CD has direct role in waste mineralisation. The microbial population (bacterial, fungal and actinomycetes) and earthworm biomass were also high in Setup-III, suggesting the influence of brown-rot fungi on paper mill sludge humification. Results indicate that fungal inoculate in vermicomposting was effective in decomposing cellulose-rich industrial sludge. Abstract The design and testing of a novel vermicomposting system, acronymed FLUVTS ─ FLippable Units Vermireactor Train System ─ is presented. It enables rapid vermicomposting of paper waste without the need of pre-composting and requires animal manure supplementation to the extent of only 10:1 paper: manure mass ratio in contrast to reported systems which must have 50% or more of the feed mass as animal manure. Moreover, the system enables the vermicomposting to be accomplished at a high rate, achieving near-total convertion of feed to vermicast at solid retention times of just 30 days in comparison to conventional systems which take 90–120 days for the same process. Uninterrupted vermireactor operation for 6 months, during which the feed was put in and its vermicompost harvested once in 30 days, demonstrates the robustness and the consistency of the system. The suitability of the paper-waste vermicompost as an organic fertilizer was then tested in terms of it's effect on seed germination and early growth of four food plants chilly (Capsicum annuum), ladies finger, (Abelmoschus esculentus), cucumber (Cucumis sativus), and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum). In general, the paper waste vermicompost when applied at levels <4.5%, was seen to promote germination success, root and shoot lengths, number and mass of leaves, and chlorophyll and carotene concentrations in all the four species fertilized by it. These effects were statistically significant, at ≥95% confidence level. The paper waste vermicompost also made the soil more plant friendly by making its particle density, porosity, and pH more favourable to plant growth than the control soil. In most cases the beneficial effects of the vermicompost were witnessed when it was applied up to 2.5%. Beyond this level there was negative impact. As elaborated in the paper this dichotomy is common to all fertilizers, conventional or organic. All-in-all the process described in this paper enables generation of an organic fertilizer from paper waste in a rapid and inexpensive manner. The increasing presence of e-books (electronic books) has become a major focus in countries around the world. In the United States, e-books represented 28% of the total book sales for 2012. In Japan, the conversion from paper books to e-books is expected to accelerate by the prevalent use of smartphones and tablet PCs. It is therefore important to quantitatively evaluate the environmental load of paper books and e-books for a sustainable society. In this study, paper books are compared to e-books read on different electronic devices (e-ink tablets, tablets, cell phones, smartphones, laptop computers, desktop computers and portable music players) through a case study on a 224-page book. The study is based on key primary data such as use time and reading speed for each device and aims to minimize assumptions made in other studies. GHG emissions for paper books are 1.24 kg-CO 2 e/book, and are reduced to 1.11 kg-CO 2 e/book when the effect of paper recycling is taken into consideration. The results for e-books under average use-time conditions range from 0.25 to 0.91 kg-CO 2 e/book with the e-ink tablet having the lowest emissions. When the average use time of each e-book device is applied, the paper book has a higher impact than all the e-books. This paper describes a cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment of offset paper production in Brazil. The production system is classified into two subsystems: a forest production subsystem, which involves seedling production, soil preparation, seedling planting, forest maintenance, and wood harvesting and transport processes; and an industrial production subsystem, involving wood pulp extraction and bleaching, chemical recovery, and offset paper manufacturing processes. The environmental analysis includes the primary energy demand, environmental impact assessment, and land use indicators. The primary energy demand indicated that the largest amount of both renewable and non-renewable primary energy is consumed by the industrial production subsystem, accounting for 91.0% of the total energy demand. The potential environmental impact assessment included eight impact categories: acidification, ecotoxicity, global warming, human toxicity – cancer effects, human toxicity – non-cancer effects, nutrient enrichment, ozone depletion, and photochemical oxidation. Most of the potential impacts are attributed to the processes of pulp extraction and bleaching, and offset paper manufacturing, mainly due to the production of electricity and thermal energy. As for impacts on land use during the forest activities, a recent developed approach was applied for the regionalized assessment of impacts. Land occupation impacts on erosion resistance, physicochemical filtration, and mechanical filtration showed a reduction in the soil ecological functions, whereas groundwater recharge indicated a credit for the performance of the soil function. With a view to reducing the main life cycle impacts of the industrial production subsystem, an evaluation is made of alternative production scenarios. The aim of this study is to enhance the use of agro-industrial byproducts and to address the environmental concerns by a novel method of co-production of thermoplastic composites with a solid residue constituting biorefinery. Accordingly, the reuse of 10–30 wt. % solid residues (SRH) from the enzymatic hydrolysis of recycled paper sludge (PS) in the production of thermoplastic composites with polypropylene (PP) was investigated. Thermal properties, water absorption, tensile strength and morphology of the prepared composites were evaluated. Higher thermal stability, rougher and wetter surface, and characteristics of a brittle material were observed in PP-SRH composites in comparison to the pristine PS-PP composites and the neat PP. The water absorption increased with increasing amount of SRH, but in lower proportion compared to other common raw materials used in the preparation of composites. Use of SRH resulted in similar or better properties compared to the composites made with the unhydrolyzed paper sludge, suggesting that SRH has potential for recycling and utilization as filler in the development of thermoplastic composites. Paper industry wastewater is considered a severe polluter of the environment because it contains various toxic pollutants that critically impact the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The current study aimed to assess the bioremediation perspective of Pseudomonas putida strain to eliminate the hazardous pollutants of paper industry wastewater. The physico-chemical analysis of the treated wastewater showed that the Pseudomonas putida MTCC 7525, which secreted laccase enzyme, significantly reduced the pollution parameters such as EC, TDS, COD, phenols, TKN, TOC, lignin and color by 69, 87, 68, 97, 75, 85, 57 and 72%, respectively in comparison to the control. The organic pollutants in the wastewater samples were characterized and identified by GC-MS and FTIR analysis, which also showed that most of the toxic compounds were reduced following the bacterial treatment. The toxicity assessment of the wastewater was performed in terms of cyto-genotoxicity and phytotoxicity assay using onion and mung bean plants. The result of the toxicity study demonstrated that the toxic effect of the wastewater samples declined after the bacterial treatment. These results showed that Pseudomonas putida MTCC 7525 could be used effectively in the paper industry for bioremediation applications, thus minimizing the undesirable effects on the environment. Abstract In this research Lemna gibba (L) and Eichhornia crassipes (E) ethanolic extracts were added to pure cellulose substrate to produce impregnated interleaving papers (LIP) and (EIP). These products are proposed to cure historical paper undergoing acidification, oxidation and fungal infection. The extracts were analysed using Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometer (GC/MS) and polyphenolic compounds were assessed. The products were tested on model decayed paper showing identical characteristics of historical paper, on which pH values were measured, transition metals concentrations were evaluated using Inductively Coupled Plasma- Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) and samples were investigated using Scanning Electron Microscope combined with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) respectively. Radical scavenging and antioxidation activities of the extracts were also assessed using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl free radical DPPH·. Results demonstrated a significant increase (P < 0.01) in the DPPH· free radical scavenging with increasing concentration in the following order vitamin C > BHT ≈ (L) extract > (E) extract. Results showed also that both (LIP) and (EIP) products effectively neutralized the acidity of decayed paper after 7 day treatment and evidently chelated transition metals. Zn2+ and Fe2+ were better chelated by (LIP) treatment in the order; Zn2+ > Fe2+ > Pb2+ > Cu2+, while Pb2+ and Cu2+ were greater removed by (EIP) treatment in the order Pb2+ > Cu2+ > Zn2+ > Fe2+. Up to 90% radical scavenging was achieved at 320.00 μg/mL concentration of (L) extract and 667.296 μg/mL concentration of (E) extracts. Aspergillus niger , Penicillium roqueforti and Eurotium chevalieri growth are inhibited at 1000 μg/mL concentration of LIP with considerable fungal spots elimination. Our findings established LIP and EIP products as novel natural origin alternative for effective synergic deacidification, antioxidation, antiradical, metal chelation and fungicidal treatment of historical paper. The limited water supply of the Metropolitan Area of Mexico City has become a challenge for local companies. The region's aquifer is listed as closed due to pressure on the water supply as a result of growth in manufacturing as well as increased domestic water use. The environmental, economic and legal benefits of a cleaner production scenario studied were highly encouraging; implementation of cleaner technologies reduces water extraction by up to 16 times. While initial investment is high, the internal rate of return rate is approximately 35% per year, implying a three year return on initial investment. Under this scenario, the business complies with environmental regulations, avoiding great amounts of water extraction and future wastewater discharge, thus conserving this vital resource. (2009) states that In the longer run the combination of the Integrated Pollution and Prevention Control permit approach with other regulatory and voluntary policy instruments taking into account the results of system assessments such as Life Cycle Assessment could potentially produce eco-efficient solutions. The handmade paper industry utilizes quantum of dyes for making bright colored handmade paper used for wedding cards, fancy and decorative paper, etc. A study has been conducted on adsorption of direct black dye (used extensively in handmade paper industry to make black colored handmade paper) on fly ash obtained from thermal power plant of Yamuna Nagar. The effluent has been characterized for pH, suspended solids, total solids and chemical oxygen demand. The batch and column studies have been conducted on the adsorption of direct black dye solution of different concentrations on fly ash at varying pH, dosage of fly ash, temperature, contact time, particle size fractions of fly ash and initial concentration of dye solution. In batch studies, it was observed that the experimental data fit well with Langmuir adsorption isotherm in comparison to Freundlich and Temkin isotherms. The maximum adsorption capacity of 76.33 mg/g was achieved at 318 K in batch studies. The column experimental data fitted well to Yoon–Nelson model and Thomas model in comparison to Bohart–Adams model. The maximum adsorption capacity of 45.54 mg/g in column study was obtained for 2.4 cm bed height, 150 ppm inlet concentration and 1.6 mL/min flow rate of dye solution. The calculations of thermodynamic parameters indicate that the adsorption of black dye on fly ash is spontaneous and endothermic in nature and follows first order kinetics with rate constant of 0.201 min −1 . It has been found that fly ash is a potential low cost adsorbent to treat effluent of handmade paper industry. The exhausted fly ash can be further reused as filler in paper making and hence can offer a viable closed loop solution in curbing pollution from this predominantly small sector industry. In this paper we investigate the market size of all materials and products presently produced from (organic) carbon and we present a method to estimate the intrinsic recycling potential of these materials/chemicals as a function of their respective applications. The method is based on the expert assessment of a number of variables that are important within the different application categories and markets of the carbon-based materials/chemicals. Applying the method, the paper presents the recycling potential of all carbon-based products. Following, an estimation of the amount of new products that can be produced each year through recycling of discarded products is presented and the amount of carbon that needs to come from other sustainable sources to fulfil our demand for new products is calculated. We distinguish nine different categories of (organic) carbon-based materials/chemicals: plastics, textile fibres, thermoset resins, rubbers, surfactants, solvents, fine chemicals, paper/board and wood products. Within these nine categories the most important materials/chemicals types were taken into account. Fossil-based and bio-based materials/chemicals were assessed separately. For each of the materials/chemicals types, the market size in terms of mass (Mt) was calculated for the main applications in which they are applied. Next, for all materials/chemicals types in these applications, the maximum recycling potential, in case mechanical or physical recycling methods are applied, was assessed, using an expert panel. Also, inevitable leakage of materials/chemicals in the different applications was assessed. Finally, the amount of feedstock coming from recycling streams that may be made available for chemical recycling or carbon capture and utilisation technologies was derived. From this, the magnitude of carbon-based materials/chemicals that need to be replaced each year by other renewable feedstock than recycled content in terms of Mton carbon was calculated. The analysis is relevant in view of implementation of a circular economy and reuse and recycling of materials, to combat depletion of raw materials. Next, it is relevant in view of phasing out fossil-feedstock to combat climate change. Our analysis indicates that the recycling potential of carbon-based materials and products through mechanical or physical methods lies around 50%, even in a system that is fully optimised for recycling. Chemical recycling and carbon capture and utilisation may provide another 25% of the renewable-carbon feedstock needed, but they generally require far more energy and other inputs to produce new materials and chemicals than the mechanical and physical recycling methods. The remaining demand for renewable-carbon feedstock thus needs to come from either biomass or CO 2 through carbon capture and utilisation technologies. Based on our findings, we argue that the composition of our present carbon-based products pool needs to be redesigned on a fundamental molecular level, towards material types that contain more oxygen. Carbon-based materials that contain more oxygen generally can be recycled more efficiently, and are also easier to produce from the alternative feedstocks biomass and CO 2 through CCU. Product-Service systems (PSS) is a somewhat established field, and many literature reviews looking at the state-of-the-art in PSS research have been conducted. Nevertheless, a broad picture of all research developed over the years and the progress of the field is still missing. Aiming to provide a clear picture of how the literature has evolved over the years and the status of the body of knowledge on the topic, this paper analyzes PSS-related literature review papers, identifies what aspects of this body of research are well developed, the progress achieved so far and remaining underexplored topics. An umbrella review (i.e., a review of reviews) was conducted, selecting 45 PSS-related review papers. The characteristics of the reviews are classified according to seven review types. A PSS-related literature review timeline is developed, divided into four research periods according to the publications' focus (themes, macro-topics and topics), similarities, timeframe, and review types. The results show that descriptive reviews are the most common in PSS-related literature. The paper provides a general picture of PSS-related literature review papers, focusing on the review types, thematic evolution, topics covered by the analyzed reviews, and underexplored research topics that could contribute to bring new insights to PSS-related research. There is a lack of quantitative studies in PSS literature; therefore, meta-analyses have not been developed in the area until now. Research on PSS business model and innovation topics are scare, and could be connected with marketing and strategy. The research opportunities highlighted in this study offer a broader perspective to readers as those cover the point of view of different authors from different research fields. Being an internationally accepted standard for the activated sludge modeling, the Activated Sludge Model No.1 (ASM1) was used to simulate the treatment of paper mills effluent in an industrial full-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR). Key characteristic parameters were estimated and corrected with the wastewater temperature: maximum heterotrophic growth rate μ H (9.69/day), heterotrophic yield Y H (0.625 g cell COD/g COD oxidized) and heterotrophic decay rate b H (1.98/day). The wastewater chemical oxygen demand (COD) was fractionated as slowly biodegradable substrate X S (20%), particulate inert organic matter X I (58%), readily biodegradable substrate S S (18%) and soluble inert organic matter S I (4%). Finally, the SBR operation was simulated with field data from the paper mill. The average relative error of the simulated effluent COD was 12.7%. Abstract: Chemical pulp is one of the most important raw materials used in the paper industry. This material is known to make a significant contribution to the water footprint and cost of final paper products; therefore, chemical pulp is crucial in determining the competitiveness of final products'. Several studies have focused on these aspects, but there have been no previous reports on the integrated application of raw material water footprint accounting and costs in the definition of the optimal supply mix of chemical pulps from different countries. The current models that have been applied specifically to the paper industry are based mainly on general sectorial data; therefore, they cannot reflect the importance of the efficiency of the different processes in the supply chain of paper production. The objective of this study was to develop a multi-objective optimization model to identify the supply mix that minimizes the water footprint accounting results and costs of chemical pulp, thereby facilitating the assessment of the water footprint by accounting for different chemical pulps purchased from various suppliers, with a focus on the efficiency of the production process. Water footprint accounting was adapted to better represent the efficiency of pulp and paper production. A multi-objective model for supply mix optimization was also developed using multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA). Water footprint accounting confirmed the importance of the production efficiency of chemical pulp, which affected the final results, with an average factor of 4.7 m3 wood/t paper. The MCDA that we developed was used to determine the optimal mix of chemical pulps from different countries, which demonstrated how the optimal mix changed when considering only one of the two variables. Herein, we also discuss the latest developments in impact assessments related to water based on a life cycle assessment, which should be used as a framework for the future development of the model that is presented. Certain paper industry wastes display high recycling potential. In this investigation, the feasibility of using green liquor dregs and biomass fly ash from the paper industry as filler in hot-mix asphalt (HMA) for road pavement construction is analysed. Particularly, the moisture damage resistance (i.e., water sensitivity) of an AC 22 base B50/70 G has been studied using the Indirect Tensile Strength Test at the Marshall mix design optimum asphalt content. The most important filler properties have been determined to study water resistance: filler water content, grain size distribution using light scattering analysis techniques, morphology using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), chemical and mineralogical composition using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques, detrimental fines content using the methylene blue test and the stiffening effect of the filler in the mastic by determining the ring and ball (R&B) softening temperature and the bitumen penetration grade. Additionally, the Rolling Bottle method and Boiling Water tests have been conducted to analyse the asphalt-aggregate bond. A control filler (i.e., commercial limestone filler) was used to compare the results. Also the mechanical properties (stiffness and resistance to the permanent deformation) of the mixtures were studied. As a result, it can be concluded that dregs have poor water resistance. Campaigns by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) pressuring companies to adopt sustainability standards have caught academic interest in recent years. Critics of this approach toward increasing biodiversity protection and social justice argue that campaign successes are often short-lived while proponents emphasize the potential of NGO campaigns to achieve positive environmental and social change in the absence of governmental legislation. Focusing on the recent forest conservation policy of Asia Pulp and Paper (APP), a leading pulp and paper company operating in Southeast Asia, we analyze the challenges companies face in implementing sustainability commitments made as a result of NGO and market pressure. Drawing from research on policy implementation and corporate greening we identify key activities to help entrench APP's commitments in the company's operations. Furthermore, we suggest that a range of actions by different stakeholder groups can achieve broader effects of APP's commitments toward better environmental and social stewardship in the region's pulp and paper sector. This work prepared a double-cross-linked biohybrid aerogel (DCBA) bead biosorbent from waste bamboo paper and chitosan by sequential physical (hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction between -COO- and -NH 3 + groups) and chemical (polymerization reaction between -COOH and -NH 2 , dehydration condensation between Si-OH and -OH) cross-linkings. The resulting DCBA bead was applied to remove cationic (Methylene blue, MB) and anionic (Congo red, CR) dyes in both single and binary systems. The MB and CR adsorption capacities of DCBA bead increased with increasing adsorbent dosage, contact time, temperature and initial dye concentration. With increasing solution pH, the MB adsorption capacity increased, while that for CR increased first and then decreased. The maximal adsorption capacities for MB and CR were 653.3 and 559.6 mg/g, respectively, in the single system. The thermodynamic analysis results showed a spontaneous and endothermic adsorption process. DCBA bead had a good stability and reusability with the removal efficiencies of 49.4% and 60.6% for MB and CR, respectively, after five cycles of adsorption-desorption. Deploying renewable energy to unit design energy-efficient technologies may fulfill the additional demand of various energy-intensive industries for their sustainability and resiliency. Multiple Stage Evaporator (MSE) is one of the most energy-intensive units used to extract the water content of the weak liquor in various industries, including the paper industry. This energy intensiveness may be reduced by integrating various Energy Reduction Schemes (ERSs). Hence, this work proposes a ERSs integrated MSE model to analyze its energy efficiency. These ERSs includes Thermo-Vapor Compressor, Steam-, Feed- Split, Feed Preheater, and Flash Tanks. Further, the performance of the proposed model is investigated under two important real-time plant complexities: Boiling Point Elevation and Fouling to achieve more realistic results. The performance analysis is initiated with the formulation of a nonlinear constrained optimization problem to increase the steam economy (SE). Also, the simulation is extended to validate at two different product concentrations (52% and 65%) by employing state-of-art optimization algorithms: CONOPT, and SCA in GAMS and MATLAB respectively. The simulated results shows an increment 1.64% and 1.37% of SE for both 52% and 65% concentration of weak liquor respectively in case of CONOPT than SCA. Also, the waste heat of the condensate, feed, and product may be further utilized for the heat recovery by incorporating the flash tanks which leads to a countable energy saving. The global cement industry produces over four billion tonnes annually. In recent years, the quest for increasing energy efficiency has led this industry to test and use “waste” materials as alternative fuels (AF). The objective of this study was to examine the use, as alternative fuel, of the shredded non-recycled plastics and paper residue (NRPP) of a materials recovery facility at the Balcones plant in San Antonio, Texas; this material has a Lower Heating Value (LHV) of about 17 MJ/kg and is called “engineered fuel” (EF). The results showed that EF consists of mostly paper fiber, a biogenic material, so its use helps to decrease CO 2 emissions from cement production. In the US, on an average about 4.3 MJ of thermal energy are used to dry, decompose, and sinter the carbonate minerals to produce one kg of “clinker” that is then ground to cement powder and mixed with other compounds. If the maximum amount of EF that can be used by the U.S. cement industry (83 million tonnes of cement per year) were to be separated at Material Recovery Facilities and used as alternative fuel in cement kilns, the diversion of non-recycled paper and plastics from landfills would amount to 17.7 million tonnes of EF. The general methodology used for the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is Eco-indicators 99 that uses the SimaPro database and four scenarios were assessed. The corresponding chemical structure of the EF was calculated and the associated emissions during combustion were determined. The laboratory analyses determined the average makeup of the sampled fuels consisted of 20% fossil based carbon and 80% biogenic. The use of EF in the cement industry reduces greenhouse gas emission by up to 3 tonnes of CO 2 per tonne of EF used in place of a high-quality coal. The study also found that use of EF in cement production has no adverse effect on the stack emissions of cement plants, nor on the quality of cement produced. The mercury concentration in the stack gas of U.S. cement kilns is well below the U.S. standard and the total dioxin emissions of all cement plants amount to only 0.05% of the dioxins emitted by all U.S. sources. A simple framework to estimate the potential of solar industrial process heating (SIPH) and corresponding CO 2 emissions mitigation in paper industry in India is presented. Geographical locations with clusters of paper mills have been identified and the annual process heating requirement for paper production (based on raw material use) at each cluster has been estimated. The total process heating potential for the paper industry in India has been estimated at 25.2 PJ/annum. Using the estimated performance of a commercially available parabolic trough based SIPH system with collector area requirement of 1.11 million m 2 annual solar fraction in the range of 0.25–0.30 have been estimated. Annual energy delivery of SIPH systems estimated at 4.34 PJ per annum. Finally at 8 main locations with clusters of paper mills in India considered in this study, adoption of SIPH without storage is expected to mitigate 0.34 million tonnes of CO 2 emissions annually. LCA studies on waste management have been promoted as they can help policy makers choose the best environmental options. However, the increasing globalization of raw materials and waste makes the optimization of waste management strategies and policies quite challenging. Therefore, new approaches are needed in order to identify the consequences of markets on the waste management systems. This paper concentrates on the quantification of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of recycling processes. The aim is to generate a comprehensive assessment of GHG emissions as a consequence of increasing the amount of material collected for recycling. Consequential life cycle assessment (CLCA) is an effective methodological framework for addressing GHG quantifications within market, but to properly perform and assess all of the market links between raw materials and waste, it is necessary to determine the cause-effect chains made up of physical flows. Thus, we propose integrating the methodologies of material flow analysis (MFA) and CLCA. We applied these methodologies to the paper and cardboard recycling system in Spain. The GHG results varied between −36 kg CO 2 eq. and −317 kg CO 2 eq. per ton of waste paper collected, depending on the quantity of waste paper exported and the source of marginal pulp considered. The cumulative energy demand (CED) was also calculated as complementary indicator. Similar trends as for GHG emissions were obtained. The future GHG quantifications should be based on the flows described by MFA analysis and should be quantified using CLCA because methodologies that accurately account for GHG are necessary for decision-making. Cellulosic pulps were prepared from Achnatherum inebrians straw using soda, soda anthraquinone (soda-AQ), and Kraft pulping processes. The main chemical compositions in A. inebrians straw are 70.5% holocellulose, 41.6% alpha-cellulose, and 18.2% lignin, similar to those in other non-wood materials. The conditions of a liquid/solid ratio of 4.5:1, a time-to-maximum temperature of 100 min, a maximum temperature of 165 °C and a time-at-maximum temperature of 40 min were used in all pulping processes. The results showed that the pulp yield was 35.12–37.01%, the kappa number was 13.23–17.67, drainage index was 19–21 °SR and the viscosity of pulps was 846–898 mL/g. This article presents a sustainable solution to repurpose paper/wood industry waste as a geotechnical construction material. A novel lignosulphonate (LS)-based composite admixture (CA) was used in this study to cope with construction problems pertaining to expansive soils. Surface water infiltration in terms of rainfall and surface water irrigation are the prime factors that cause volumetric change behavior and a drastic reduction in shear strength due to loss in suction that eventually causes failure in expansive soils. Such failures are comprised of complex hydromechanical phenomena and their remediation requires special attention. In this context, this study for the first time deals with the use of LS-based CA as a remedy to such failures in expansive soils considering the hydromechanical properties. To better understand the hydraulic response, the specially designed soil-column model tests (SCMTs) were conducted. Besides, different geotechnical experiments and microstructural analyses were carried out to analyze the hydromechanical behavior of CA treatment against the varying degree of saturation (S r). The results showed that LS-based CA treatment increases the water holding capacity over a suction range of 78.4 kPa and air entry value (AEV) by 33%. Also, the SCMT showed that the wetting-front depth (WFD) at full saturation in CA treated expansive soil was 4–10% quicker than untreated expansive soil. In addition, for the increase in S r from optimum to 100%, the decrease in cohesion (c) value for untreated and treated soil was found to be 88% and 39.8%, and the increase in compressibility was 37% and 17%, respectively, highlighting better resistance against S r. Whereas, the swelling potential was completely eradicated with a significant reduction in volumetric shrinkage by 43% compared to untreated soil. The microstructural analyses showed the development of apparent aggregation with the S r in untreated expansive soil, whereas the CA treatment-induced better structure with bigger size particles with disrupted inter and intra assemblage pore spaces. The results showed that LS-based CA manifests substantial hydromechanical stability against variation in S r. The wastewater dissolved oxygen (DO) control has been considered as the most cost-effective control solution for GHG reduction in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). However, the competition between contaminant removal efficiency and GHG reduction hinders the drastic reduction of GHG emissions from WWTP. In this study, based on the established integrated GHG emission model, explicitly considering the total GHG reduction targets on the premise of effluent compliance, an intelligent control scheme has been developed for an activated sludge process in a paper mill. Regarding DO as the controlled variable, the proposed hierarchical optimal proportional-integral (HOPI) control scheme was established consisting of three layers: 1) Layer 1 for the effluent quality estimation, 2) Layer 2 for the optimal DO set point determined by genetic algorithm with the influent variations to obey discharging norms and reduce GHG emissions, 3) Layer 3 for the DO tracking proportional integral (PI) control with the controller parameters adjusted by the back propagation neural network to track the dynamically optimized DO set points. The simulation results showed that, compared with the open-loop (OL) operation (averaged aeration, 10/h), the proposed HOPI control (averaged aeration, 7.9/h) reduced the GHG emissions by 12.54% under the premise of discharging norms, which was mainly attributed to the reduction of the aeration electricity consumption. In contrast, the PI control (averaged aeration, 12.9/h) increased the GHG emissions by 7.48% compared with the OL operation. Papermaking is a water intensive industry. The growth of paper demand will further intensify the need of fresh water resources. Papermaking involves complex processing routes. Previous investigations of water consumption in papermaking industry have focused primarily on key processes and pathways, ignoring the impacts of many intermediate and inter-related processes in paper production cycles and there underestimating the sustainability impacts. Herein, the results of a life cycle analysis of water consumption for papermaking industry in China using an extensive system boundary that includes the water embedded in intermediate processing are presented. The results show the life cycle water consumption and water saving potentials for different papermaking pathways. The advocacy of "forest pulp and paper integration" may have few practical contribution to reducing water consumption due to the low indirect water consumption of raw materials and energy for transportation. The pulp and paper industry faces several challenges linked to climate and environmental impact, resource efficiency, rising energy prices, increased competition for biomass resources, and declining demand for traditional printed paper products. However, these challenges also offer strategic opportunities for the industry to develop into a competitive, resource-efficient, and low-carbon industry in line with a biobased economy. Against this background, this paper aims to analyse current energy strategies in the pulp and paper industry in Sweden. Specifically, the paper analyses how companies combine continuous process efficiency to reduce energy costs with activities that could be developed into new energy-related products to increase revenue. Most of the analysed companies work to various degrees with both these strategies, employing methods that include improving energy efficiency, energy security, and energy conversion, as well as developing a wide range of biobased energy products. However, our study indicates that there is an untapped potential associated with energy product development, and we conclude that energy efficiency measures can free up resources, enabling the development of new energy products. Sustainability measurement in economics includes assessment of environmental and economic effects in an integrated manner. In this study, system level economic data are integrated with environmental impacts determined from a life cycle assessment (LCA) of a common product. We adopt a costing methodology that captures conventional costs, but additionally incorporates externality costs to present a convenient, easily interpretable metric. Green Net Value Added (GNVA) is a type of full cost accounting that incorporates total revenue, the cost of production, depreciation, and environmental externalities. We present externality costs disaggregated by upstream sectors, full cost of production, and GNVA to evaluate the relative sustainability of Bounty ® paper towels manufactured at two production facilities. We found that the longer running, more established line had a higher GNVA. The predominant components contributing to externality costs come from the stationary sources in the supply chain: electricity generation (27–35%), refineries (20–21%), pulp and paper making (15–23%). Health-related externalities from Particulate Matter (PM2.5) and Carbon Dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions are to a great extent driven by electricity usage and emissions by the facilities, followed by pulp processing and transport. Reducing waste materials through reuse has in the recent past contributed to sustainable manufacturing in many industries. With the development of large-scale poultry farming, the treatment of large amounts of chicken feathers has become a problem and threatened its use as a renewable resource. This paper examines the use of chicken feathers in the paper making process; a process which would traditionally use wood as the raw material. The effects of combining feather fibre and wood pulp on paper performance were studied and compared to the properties of handsheets made with 100% wood pulp. With the increase of feather content, properties such as tightness, tensile index and bursting index decreased, whilst air permeability improved. There was no significant difference in water absorbency between various chicken feather/wood pulp handsheet samples however, the water absorbency started to decrease above 80% of chicken feather content. This could potentially open up a new avenue for the use of chicken feathers in applications that are meant to tolerate high humidity conditions, e.g., packaging products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Waste paper, one of the major components of municipal and industrial wastes, has considerable potential as a low-cost inductive feedstock for enzyme production. In this study, four kinds of waste papers were used for simultaneous production of cellulase and xylanase by Trichoderma longiflorum. The highest FPase activities (3.21 IU/mL and 2.97 IU/mL) were achieved using waste office paper (WOP) and corrugated board (CB), respectively, followed by magazine paper (MP, 2.51 IU/mL) and tissue paper (TP, 2.34 IU/mL). The maximum β-glucosidase activities (0.51 IU/mL) and xylanase activities (382.59 IU/mL) were obtained from CB substrates, which were higher than that in the reported literature using waste paper. Correspondingly, the soluble protein concentrations and SDS-PAGE profiles from CB fermentation revealed that more enzymes were secreted during fermentation compared with other waste paper. Moreover, the structural features of different waste paper were characterized by using SEM and XRD technique and revealed that the structural variations were mainly caused by the raw wood sources and papermaking processes, and further affected the fermentation capacity. In addition, a higher β-glucosidase activity of 0.80 IU/mL were obtained from the mixed carbon source of CB and wheat bran (WB), which were significantly improved and increased by 56.86% when compared with the CB as single carbon source. This study confirmed that the waste paper without pretreatment could be efficiently utilized as an inductive feedstock for simultaneous production of cellulase and xylanase by T. longiflorum. Therefore, these findings obtained from this study will provide a more widely insight into investigating the low-cost inductive feedstock for enzyme production, which were of great benefit both for the economy and environment. The main aim of this study was to define a procedure useful to evaluate the potential environmental, social and economic benefits contained in paper and cardboard (or other recyclables), which are wasted in the unsorted fraction of municipal solid waste (MSW). To give a practical example, the procedure was applied to the 550 municipalities of the Campania region, in Southern Italy, but the developed procedure is applicable in any context in an 'urban mining' perspective. The procedure consists of five phases and uses two methodologies: one for the estimation of the composition analysis of the unsorted residual waste and another for the calculation of sustainability indicators able to measure the benefits wasted in the unsorted residual MSW. Six indicators were defined: two for the environment (carbon footprint and ecological footprint), two for the society (health footprint and occupational benefits) and two for the economy (economic profit and economic saving). The first methodology was developed by the regional environmental protection agency to update the MSW regional management plan. The second methodology is based on the use of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) through which it was possible to calculate the reference parameters useful for the calculation of the impacts (i.e., loss of benefits) for recycling, mechanical and biological treatment (MBT), incineration and landfilling of paper and cardboard contained in the unsorted residual waste. The obtained results confirmed the presence of such an enormous deposit of recyclable materials contained in the unsorted residual waste, which is a potential source, but not exploited, of environmental, social and economic benefits. For instance, the paper and cardboard 'urban mine' of Naples was greater than 16 million of euro (economic profit + economic saving), with a potential saving of around 11.4 million of kgCO 2 eq. Although the environmental performance of the paper industry has drastically improved since the nineties, Western manufacturers still refuse to reuse agricultural waste. Moreover, papermakers make extensive use of poorly biodegradable polyelectrolytes which are toxic to fish. With this in mind, we suggest pulping lignocellulosic residues by sulfur-free processes, decrystallizing cellulose, and introducing positively charged functional groups with the goal of partially replacing conventional cationic polymers. Functionalization of pulps from orange tree trimmings, rapeseed stalks and wheat straw was carried out with different concentrations of (3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl)trimethylammonium chloride (CHPTAC). When the mole ratio of CHPTAC to anhydroglucose units was 4, cationic fibers reached charge density values over 0.2 meq/g after 40 or 60 min of reaction. Then, we tested the performance of these fibers in papermaking, using titanium dioxide, whose zeta potential is negative, as filler. Opacity of lightweight paper was raised to 90%, surpassing a conventional cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM), while the increase in brightness (from 37.8% to 41.9%) was not as good as that achieved with CPAM. Even if residues cannot replace wood, chemical modifications of them can result in valuable cationic fibers, making synthetic polyelectrolytes less necessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Current management of solid waste from pulp and paper activities represents an environmental and economic burden worldwide due to pollution emissions. This study investigates the potential of hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) treatment as a sustainable alternative for producing cleaner and energy-dense solid fuel from paper mill sludge. The effect of process parameters (temperature, reaction time and solid load) on hydrochar fuel formation from paper sludge was evaluated and, for the first time, the paper sludge-derived hydrochar was optimised to maximise the mass yield and calorific value using response surface methodology (RSM). The physicochemical characteristics, thermal fuel behaviour, energy recycling efficiency and electricity generation potential were assessed by proximate and ultimate analysis, thermogravimetry, bomb calorimeter, scanning electron microscopy and process energy assessment. Results showed that hydrochar fuel formation and properties were mainly influenced by the process temperature and residence time, and governed by dehydration and decarboxylation reactions which reduced the atomic H/C and O/C ratios by 35.5% and 64%, respectively. The produced hydrochars presented low sulphur, nitrogen and ash content with a maximum calorific value (HHV) of 22.9 MJ/kg, equivalent to the HHV of coal for commercial utility in South Africa. The HHV of the hydrochar corresponded to a 49.80% increase over the HHV of the initial feedstock. The optimum operating conditions were 231 ± 1 °C and 1.99 h for a hydrochar yield of 74.4% and calorific value of 18.5 MJ/kg. The energy assessment showed that up to 58.34% of the energy produced by hydrochar fuel combustion may be recycled as heat or power, while the remaining 41.66% of the combustion energy could be utilised to sustain the HTC treatment of paper sludge. The substantial water demand was concluded to be a drawback. Thus, water recirculation and the potential to catalyse the HTC reactions to increase overall process efficiency will constitute a future study to make the process more environmentally friendly for industrial-scale application. Water removal during paper manufacturing is of primary importance to production rate and cost efficiency for the pulp and paper industry. It is crucial to develop methods to reduce energy consumption by increasing the percent solids in the paper web entering the dryers from the presses. This research aimed to develop a fundamental understanding of the effect of bio-chemo-mechanical pretreatments on a bleached softwood fiber matrix and evaluate the impact on the percent solids of the paper web after pressing. Experiments included enzymatic, refining, and cationic polymer pretreatments on the bleached softwood pulps, followed by laboratory papermaking and determining the equilibrium moisture content (EMC) after pressing and the pulp and paper properties. The combined effect of mild refining, controlled enzymatic pretreatments, and cationic strength aids proved to enhance the water removal during wet pressing (up to 35 % reduction) and increase paper strength (up to 60 % increase). The results of increased solids after pressing were used to calculate the potential reduction in drying energy during paper manufacturing. Energy savings of around 10 % for paper drying could be achieved through fiber matrix modification by bio-chemo-mechanical pretreatment. Enzymatic pretreatments have previously been conventionally applied before refining as an energy-saving method. However, this research shows that synergistic actions of enzymes added after refining modify the fibers and create the optimal conditions for enhancement in drainage, press dewatering, and paper properties. Pulp and paper is considered to be the fourth most energy-intensive industry (EII) worldwide. However, as most of the CO 2 emissions are of biomass origin, this sector has the potential to become a carbon-negative industry. This study proposes a new concept for conversion of the pulp and paper industry to carbon negative that relies on the inherent CO 2 capture capability of the Kraft process. The techno-economic performance of the proposed carbon-negative system, based on calcium looping (CaL) retrofitted to a pulp and paper plant, was evaluated. The effect of CaL design specifications and cost assumptions on the thermodynamic and economic performance were evaluated. Under the initial design assumptions, the reference pulp and paper plant was shown to turn from electricity importer to electricity exporter with the cost of CO 2 avoided equal to 39.0 €/tCO 2. The parametric study showed that an increase in the fresh limestone make-up rate resulted in a linear increase of the specific primary energy consumption for CO 2 avoided (SPECCA) and a reduction in the amount of electricity exported to the electric grid. This translates into an increase in the price of pulp and newsprint, and the cost of CO 2 avoided. This study has also demonstrated that the pulp and paper industry has high potential to become carbon negative. With the increasing demand for freshwater resources, the sustainable and effective utilization of atmospheric water has become a critical issue. Herein, an efficient and stable monolithic water-adsorbent is designed via functionalizing glass fiber paper loaded with two-linker metal-organic frameworks (CGF-mixed-MOFs(Al)). Firstly, a chitosan (CTS) polyelectrolyte layer is constructed on glass fiber paper to improve the MOFs loading capacity (306.71%) through electrostatic interaction and hydrophilic interaction. Subsequently, a series of two-linker metal-organic frameworks (mixed-MOFs(Al)) composed of MIL-160(Al) and Al-fumarate are tailor-made on CGF surface through a situ synthesis self-assembly technology. The resultant mixed-MOFs(Al) monolith exhibits better water harvesting ability and faster adsorption kinetics at low humidity owing to possessing more active adsorption sites. Different from CGF-MIL-160(Al) and CGF-Al-fumarate, the water sorption of CGF-mixed-MOFs(Al) 5 at 30% RH, 25% RH and 20% RH reaches 0.37 g/g, 0.31 g/g and 0.25 g/g, respectively. The lab-scale atmospheric water harvesting device based on CGF-mixed-MOFs(Al) 5 confirms the feasibility of this work-tailored product as a potential water sorbent in low-humidity environments. The cyclability results (50 times) indicate that CGF-mixed-MOFs(Al) 5 maintains good water capture performance, integrity (no MOFs leakage) and crystallinity, which guarantees its working reliability and sustainable benefits. Therefore, our customized water adsorption system provides a simple, long-effective, economical and advanced strategy to capture more fresh water from atmosphere in arid climates.
