As a traditional energy and carbon intensive sector, it becomes imperative for the global paper industry to realize green development. This paper aims to provide guidance for the green transformation of global paper industry by evaluating the global paper industry green development level in a systematic and dynamic way. This paper employs text-mining method to develop paper industry green development evaluation indicator system and adopts market-extended LCA model and entropy-TOPSIS method to calculate the paper industry green development level of 48 countries/regions. The results show that during 2000–2030 the paper industry green development level of developing countries improves faster than developed countries, where those of developing and developed countries increase from 0.3369 to 0.3938 and from 0.5120 to 0.5517 respectively and the gap between them narrows from 0.1751 to 0.1579. The comparative analysis reveals that the paper industries of developed and developing countries are in different green development stages. Developing countries, represented by China, improve greatly in economic and social dimensions, but decline seriously in ecological dimension due to enlarging resource consumption and environmental damages. On the contrary, developed countries tend to saturate in economic and social dimensions and have been improving fast in ecological dimension, gradually realizing the decoupling of industrial economic development and environmental damages. Environmental protection and sustainable development are now profoundly ingrained in the public consciousness in the modern era of the global green revolution. First, this paper uses an evolutionary game model to theoretically analyse the impact of environmental regulation and green finance on enterprises by dissecting the game behaviour between local governments, banks and enterprises. Then, we incorporate entrepreneurial spirit into the model to determine whether entrepreneurial spirit accelerates the achievement of green sustainability objectives. Environmental regulation and green finance are found to contribute substantially to the innovation of green technologies by local enterprises, while entrepreneurial spirit accelerates this process. Finally, we empirically test the findings based on a prefecture-level panel dataset from 2007 to 2020. We find that green finance has a positive impact in Central and Western cities of China, while Eastern cities are in greater need for government environmental regulation controls. For entrepreneurial spirit, the incentive effect of entrepreneurial spirit on the level of green technology innovation is more significant in Central and Western regions of China. This paper investigates the impact of China's environmental regulations, with a focus on the green credit policy, on green innovation in pursuit of the "carbon peak and carbon neutrality" goal. Given the implementation of the 2012 Green Credit Guidelines, this paper employs the Difference-in-Difference Method (DID) and conducts a quasi-natural experiment to empirically examine the interactions among the central government, local governments, and high-pollution and high-emission enterprises by exploring the impact of green credit policies on green innovation of these enterprises. Relying on 4503 samples of 237 high-pollution and high-emission enterprises listed in the main board in China from 2003 to 2021, this study reveals that the green credit policy can improve green innovation of these enterprises. Specifically, this study explores the detailed mechanism through which the green credit policy enables these enterprises to increase their market concentration and then the monopoly profits, which in turn promotes their green innovative productivity. In addition, this paper also reveals how local governments' political and financial incentives may serve as positive and negative moderating factors, respectively, within the impact mechanism. Green total factor productivity is a vital measure of sustainable progress, holding immense implications for attaining both economic growth and environmental preservation in a mutually beneficial manner. Focusing on green total factor productivity, this paper examines its nexus with low-carbon energy technology using the Instrumental Variable Generalized Method of Moments (IV-GMM) model, based on a panel dataset in China during 2005–2018. This paper also examines the asymmetric impact of low-carbon energy technology on green total factor productivity. In addition, the moderating and mediating effects are checked. The main findings are that (1) low-carbon energy technology is a promoting factor for green total factor productivity. (2) Low-carbon energy technology exerts a more prominent marginal impact on green total factor productivity when green total factor productivity is at higher quantile levels. (3) Renewable energy generation not only drives green total factor productivity directly, but also further increases the promotion effect of low-carbon energy technology on green total factor productivity, showing a positive moderating role. (4) Energy structure transition and industrial structure transition are two internal impact mechanisms between low-carbon energy technology and green total factor productivity. This paper has observed pivotal changes in innovative frameworks at the intersection of the digital revolution and sustainable initiatives. Within Industry 4.0, the fusion between intelligent manufacturing and green innovation has become a central driver for sustainability. Integrating these two pivotal forces to harness their collective efficiency is crucial. However, current literature offers limited insights into their combined impact, and the direction of their evolving trends still needs to be defined. Considering this, the research elucidates the core concepts and traits of digital-green fusion (DGF) within regional advanced manufacturing (RAMIDGF). Moreover, this research proposes a double-helix fusion mechanism model. Utilizing data from the advanced manufacturing sectors in six key Chinese urban clusters, this paper adopts a comprehensive analytical toolkit that includes the Coupling Modified Model, Kernel Density Estimation, Markov Chain algorithms, and the Dagum Gini Coefficient for trend analysis. The findings indicate that between 2009 and 2021, RAMIDGF exhibited a trend of initial growth followed by a decline, showing a strong correlation with per capita GDP (RGDP). The principal source of variation in RAMIDGF stems from differences between urban agglomerations, with the Yangtze River Delta and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei clusters exhibiting transitional behavior and a 'ladder-type trend' in RAMIDGF. As metropolitan clusters become more economically integrated, the probability of transitional behavior in RAMIDGF heightens. However, achieving elevated leapfrog development proves challenging, with an inherent risk of decline. Spatial spillover implications, agglomeration characteristics, and club convergence tendencies mark the RAMIDGF process. The coupling effect of green innovation participants, elements, and environments directly reflects the operation and evolution of a green innovation ecosystem. This paper studies the spatial organization mode of green innovation ecosystems and the structural evolution and self-organization mode of their associated networks under this coupling effect. By selecting relevant data from 286 cities in China from 2010 to 2021, the green innovation ecosystem coupling coordination index (GIECCI) is calculated using a coupling coordination model. The calculation result is used as a weight to modify a gravity model to construct an innovation ecological network. After analyzing the calculation results, the findings are as follows. (1) The polarization effect of the GIECCI is significantly alleviated, presenting a quantitative structure close to the normal distribution; However, the existence of the Matthew effect trap leads to great resistance to green innovation in some cities. (2) Cities with the same or a similar GIECCI are more likely to form agglomerations, including mature, cross-distribution, and budding agglomeration models. (3) The connectivity status of urban nodes significantly varies, and the mismatch between connectivity symmetry and the total strength of green innovation gravity is widespread. These findings may provide a reference for government departments to plan the layout of green innovation industries and choose sustainable innovation strategies for enterprises. Promoting industrial digitalization and deepening regional collaborative innovation is essential for achieving urban green and sustainable development. This paper constructs a differential game model based on theoretical analysis and reveals the influence mechanism of industrial digitalization and regional collaborative innovation on urban green development efficiency (GDE). After that, this paper uses the entropy method, Super-SBM model, and improved gravity model to measure the level of industrial digitalization, urban GDE, and regional collaborative innovation, respectively. Then, this paper constructs the fixed-effects model, SDM model, moderating-effects model, and threshold model, then uses the panel data of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) urban agglomeration during 2011–2020 for empirical testing. The results show that: (1) industrial digitalization significantly improves urban GDE. (2) Overall, 2011–2015 is the rapid development period of BTH industry digitalization, and 2015–2020 is its stable development period. However, there are apparent spatial differences and imbalances. (3) Industrial digitalization has a significant spatial spillover effect that can enhance local and surrounding cities' GDE. (4) Regional collaborative innovation can directly enhance urban GDE, and has a positive moderating effect on industrial digitalization to enhance urban GDE. China facing the challenge of coordinated development of "ecology, economy, and well-being". Scholars have conducted some research on the relationship between enviromental regulation and employment, but there is less research on the role of clean technology innovation in the employment effect of environmental regulation, which is the purpose of this paper. Using the panel data of 22 industrial sectors in China, the paper uses the number of clean technology patents to measure the level of clean technology innovation, and examines the moderating effect of clean technology innovation in the employment effect of environmental regulations. The results show that: (1) With the gradual improvement of environmental regulation, the impact of environmental regulation on employment presents the characteristics of inhibition first and then promotion. (2) Clean technology innovation has a moderating effect on the employment effect of environmental regulation. It should encourage the green upgrading of traditional technologies, support the development and optimization of private enterprises in various industries, so as to promote enterprises to effectively reduce pollution emissions and create jobs through green technology upgrading at the initial stage. Different from developed markets, China capital market is dominated by retail investors. In the digital age, retail investors are increasingly making their voice heard through online channels, which is a new form of shareholder activism in China. This paper examines the association between retail investor activism (RIA) and corporate greenwashing behavior (CGB) using the data of question raised by investors on official investor interactive platforms (IIPs) in China. We discover that the RIA on IIPs is negatively associated with CGB. The mechanism analysis shows that the RIA helps to curb CGB through promoting information transparency and improving internal corporate governance level. We also find that the association between RIA and CGB is strengthened in regions with weaker green finance and environmental regulation, and in industries with weaker product market competition. This indicates that the RIA, a type of private governance, can serve as a substitute to the governance effect of the government and the product market. Further studies show that RIA on unofficial channels such as stock forums or search engines can promote CGB, contrary to the conclusion about IIPs. Our research suggests that strengthening the rights of retail investors through official channels helps to reduce CGB and demonstrates the importance of official channels in the governance role of RIA in emerging markets. This paper uses a double-difference model to test the impact of green credit policy on the default risk of heavy polluters based on the data of China listed companies from 2008 to 2021. It is found that green credit policy can significantly reduce the default risk of heavy polluters, and the reduction effect is more significant in state-owned enterprises. Further mechanism tests show that green credit policy reduces default risk by guiding heavily polluting firms to reduce financial leverage. Government environmental regulation and corporate green innovation capacity affect the role of green credit policy on corporate default risk. With the strengthening of regional environmental regulations and the enhancement of corporate green innovation capabilities, the effect of green credit policies in diminishing the default risk for companies with high pollution levels is increasingly evident. The rapid development of digital finance has profoundly changed the pattern of economic and social development, which is of great significance for the realization of the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature and for the promotion of sustainable development. This study measures the state of China's provincial ecological footprint from 2011 to 2019, combines the characteristics of digital financial development, and explores whether such development can promote sustainable development from an ecological footprint perspective. The results show that (1) China's provincial ecological footprint per capita, which was continuously aggravated, increased by an average of 29.15% during the sample period. Digital financial development is shown to be able to effectively suppress the ecological footprint, and an environmental inclusion effect is also observed, which helps achieve a win‒win solution for economic development and ecological conservation while promoting environmental equality. Endogeneity tests and other robustness tests indicate that causality holds. (2) Bridging the digital divide, the improvement of environmental constraints and government digital governance capacity can help amplify the marginal effects of digital finance and mitigate the ecological footprint. (3) Green technological innovation and green finance are critical paths to achieve sustainable development. We try to expand the political promotion tournaments in Chinese local governments from raising GDP to the level of increasing fiscal revenues. From the vantage point of officials' performance appraisal, we investigate the impact of local government officials' political ambitions, represented by the ex-ante commitment level of fiscal revenue targets, on carbon emission intensity (CEI). Utilizing a sample of 209 prefecture-level cities in China spanning 2006 to 2019, this paper empirically scrutinizes the influence of local government political ambition on CEI. The findings reveal that the greater the political ambition of local government officials, the more pronounced the reduction in CEI. Furthermore, our study demonstrates that political ambition contributes to the decline of CEI by elevating the levels of environmental attention and green innovation. This research not only aids in comprehending the rationale and necessity of the political promotion tournaments implemented by the Chinese central government but also offers valuable insights for other developing countries seeking to mitigate CEI. Green credit is a new financial instrument that has emerged in response to the call for the transformation of the "green economy" model. It aims to utilize financial means to support green industries and environmental projects, serving as a crucial lever for the integration of social and economic benefits. It also represents a significant developmental direction for the future credit business of banks. Leveraging microdata from 36 banks spanning the years 2007–2022, this study explores the correlation between green credit and the risk-taking behavior of commercial banks in China, building upon the DID model. Meanwhile, Granger causality tests are employed to investigate the bidirectional relationship between these two core objects. The research results indicate that green credit has a short-term mitigating effect on the risk-taking behavior of commercial banks. This risk-mitigating effect is more pronounced among banks with smaller assets and lower profitability. However, this effect diminishes over time, ultimately resulting in an increased propensity for risk-taking in the long run. Moreover, this highlight posits that the credit risks of banks do not influence the implementation of green credit policies. Factors influencing the development of renewable energy have emerged as a hot topic of policy discussion in recent years. However, the direct impact of natural resource dependence on renewable energy has been overlooked, especially in emerging economies. Using Chinese province data from 2005 to 2019, this study employs a nonlinear panel model and a Quantile Regression with Nonadditive Fixed Effects for Panel Data (QRPD) model to examine the impact of natural resource dependence on renewable energy development and explores the great importance of government policy support. The study indicates that the influence of natural resource dependence on renewable energy development supports the "conditional resource curse" hypothesis, showing a U-shaped nonlinear relationship. The effect of natural resource dependence and government policy support on the development of renewable energy shows a dynamic change trend. In the early stage of renewable energy development, policy support is crucial, while during the growing and mature stages, natural resource dependence exerts a stronger driving force. The results of the mechanism test indicate that natural resource dependence can boost renewable energy development through green technology innovation and environmental regulation channels. Digital technologies are a key driver of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. However, as the physical foundation supporting digital technology, how digital infrastructure affects carbon emissions is unclear. Based on the panel data from 2008 to 2019, this paper examines the impact of the Broadband China Policy on carbon emissions by adopting a multi-period difference-in-differences (DID) method. The empirical findings indicate that, first, digital infrastructure development plays a significant role in reducing carbon emissions in China. Second, the Broadband China Policy significantly reduces carbon emissions especially in China's low-carbon emission regions, high-level digitization regions, and non-resource-cursed regions. Third, the implementation of the Broadband China Policy facilitates carbon emissions reduction through the promotion of green technology progress, optimization of industrial structures, green transformation of residents' lifestyles, and electrification of energy mix. Finally, the Broadband China Policy has a positive spatial spillover effect on the carbon intensity in the surrounding regions of pilot cities, but it has no significant effect on the total carbon emissions and per capita carbon emissions in the surrounding regions. Based on the perspectives of asymmetric effects and structural breakpoints, this paper empirically analyses the effect of digital transformation on green technology innovation, as well as its heterogeneity and non-linear characteristics, using fixed effect models and panel threshold model with a sample of Chinese A-share-listed corporates from 2011 to 2021. The findings suggest that digital transformation of corporates can significantly promotes green technology innovation, which remains valid after a series of endogenous and robustness tests. Heterogeneous regression results shows that digital transformation exhibits an asymmetric impact on green technology innovation, with greater incentive effect for state-owned corporates, manufacturing corporates, and corporates located in areas with stricter environmental regulations. Additionally, threshold effect analyses prove that a positive non-linear relationship between digital transformation and green technology innovation, when corporate human capital, industry competition and regional institutional quality exceeded their respective structural breakpoints, the marginal contribution of digital transformation is further strengthened. High-quality economic development focuses on achieving effective qualitative improvement and reasonable quantitative growth in the economy, which is the essential way for China to achieve sustainable development. This paper aims to investigate the role of financial development in the impact of foreign direct investment on high-quality economic development. GDP and green total factor productivity are used to measure the quantity and quality of economic development, respectively. We construct benchmark panel regression models, nonlinear interaction term models, and panel threshold models to examine the threshold effect of FDI on high-quality economic development based on the scale, structure, and efficiency of financial development. A series of tests are conducted to check the robustness of the estimates. Our results show that green total factor productivity in China is primarily driven by green technology progress. Additionally, foreign direct investment has a positive impact on China's high-quality economic development, with a threshold effect and nonlinear characteristics. Specifically, the scale of financial development affects the influence of foreign direct investment on the quantity of economic development, while the efficiency of financial development affects its influence on the quality of economic development. Furthermore, the structure of financial development affects both the quantity and quality of economic development. This study presents novel findings that contribute to understanding the role of financial development in the impact of foreign direct investment on high-quality economic development. China is actively advancing the integration of digital and real industrial economies, fostering a mutually beneficial cycle that could potentially drive new momentum for eco-friendly industrial development. The empowering effect of digital-real integration on industrial green transformation (IGT) requires urgent exploration. Based on China's industrial sector panel data from 2010 to 2020, this paper empirically investigates the relationship between digital-real integration and IGT and delves into its internal mechanism to verify the above hypothesis. Meanwhile, it analyzes the heterogeneous effects of digital-real integration on IGT, considering variations in industrial technology levels and the sources of such integration. The results demonstrate a positive impact of digital-real integration on IGT in China. The green technology and scale effects play pivotal roles in unleashing the green benefits of digital-real integration in the industrial sector. Notably, the contribution of digital-real integration to IGT varies across industrial subsectors with distinct technology levels. Transparent environmental information is fundamental for the government to better regulate pollution and for the public to be aware of pollution. However, how the improvement of environmental information transparency affects firms' environmental behavior has been underexplored. This paper fills this gap by exploring the impact of China's air quality monitoring and disclosure program on the green innovation of firms; via this program, real-time air quality monitoring stations have been constructed nationwide, and the information is promptly released to the public. The results of a difference-in-differences estimation show that the information program has significantly increased the green innovation of firms, especially the number of green invention patent applications. Moreover, this increase is realized via the regulatory effect of both the local government and public attention. Additionally, the green innovation effect performs stronger in state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and firms in heavily polluting industries. This paper contributes to the related literature from the perspective of central government-led real-time transparent environmental information disclosure. Under the goal of "carbon peaking" and "carbon neutrality" in China, it is significant to explore whether green finance contributes to carbon emission reduction. Therefore, based on the panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2005 to 2020, this paper empirically examines the impact of green finance on carbon emissions and its mechanism using the FE model, GMM model, DID, and the mediating effect model. Results find that green finance can significantly promote carbon emissions reduction, and this promotion remains still after robustness tests. The heterogeneity analysis shows that green finance's carbon emission reduction effect is more significant in developed and western regions. Moreover, the results of policy intervention effects confirm that green finance reform and innovation pilot zones (GFRIs) for carbon emission reduction are more pronounced than in other regions. Finally, the mediating effects reveal that industrial structure and green innovation are the core transmission channels through which green finance influences carbon emission reduction. Green finance is essential for supporting the development of green, low-carbon projects and preventing environmental and climate financial risks. Investigating and studying whether and how it can aid in implementing energy transformation is worthwhile. This paper uses 30 provinces from 2004 to 2020 as research samples, the entropy method to construct a green finance measurement system, and the weighted multidimensional vector angle index method to construct an energy low-carbon transformation index based on the actual situation of green finance in China and the existing theoretical research basis. We systematically analyzed each province's spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of green finance and energy structure transformation by constructing a fixed effect model, a GMM model, an intermediary effect model, and a spatial Dubin model. We empirically tested the effect direction, internal mechanism, spatial spillover, and regional heterogeneity of green finance development (GFD) on energy structure transformation (EST) to investigate the low-carbon transformation of energy structures. The findings indicate the following:(1) Green finance plays a positive role in promoting the transformation and development of China's energy structure. (2) The influence of green finance development on the transformation of China's energy structure has significant spatial spillover, exhibiting "local and neighborhood" reciprocity. Through the spatial spillover effect, green finance can encourage the low-carbon transformation of local energy structures and increase the level of low-carbon transformation in neighboring areas. (3) The improvement of the level of green technology innovation and the intensity of environmental regulations are essential channels for green finance to support the low-carbon transformation of the energy structure, and regional heterogeneity will alter this transmission mechanism. Selection of a reasonable diamond cutting tool (DCT) is a crucial Multiple Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) problem for promoting cleaner production for a natural stone company. It has severe uncertainties in the decision information, complex interdependences among the DM criteria and needs to balance stakeholders' opinions and adopt the non-complete compensation idea in the DM process. This paper establishes a specialized index system with changing the evaluation object from ontology of DCT to the 'stone machining system' within the boundary demarcated by LCA. Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method is applied to analyze the interdependence relationships existing in the index system and then the indicators' weights can be obtained by Analytic Network Process (ANP) method. In order to avoid complete compensation among indicators, Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluations II (PROMETHEE II) method is used to prioritize the alternatives and identify the most reasonable DCT. The new developed MCDM algorithm is expressed based on interval-valued fuzzy set (IVFS) theory to handle the uncertain information in DM process. Integration of IVFS theory with MCDM method allows the decision-maker to use linguistic variables which correspond to interval-valued fuzzy numbers to describe their judgments and ensures all the stakeholders' preferences can be trade-off in the DM process. In the case application, the proposed method has been applied to select a suitable DCT to cut the Lotus red granite (G3768) for a stone processing company in China. As a result, the iron-based DCT (TJ-15) obtained the highest priority net flow (0.373) among five DCT alternatives and it was identified as the most reasonable DCT for the case company. The application study demonstrates the effectiveness and robustness of the developed method and indicates that pursuit of matching DCT with the characteristics of natural stone is more rational than blindly adopting more advanced and expensive DCT. Under the restriction of carbon neutral and carbon peak, the development of green building has become the strategic demand of most countries in the world. Despite the rapid development of green building in China, there are still some problems, such as insufficient market development force under the government's leadership, emphasizing design and neglecting operation. In order to realize high-quality synergistic development of green building market, this paper constructs a new synergistic development framework of green building market, establishes a tripartite evolutionary game model including local governments, developers and consumers, uses the analysis tool of evolutionary game theory and synergistic theory to explore the unilateral ESS and the system ESS of green building market. In order to verify the model, this paper adopts a case study method, takes a residential building project in Tianjin, China which has awarded a three-star mark in green building design evaluation as an example for numerical simulation, discusses the influence of government guidance on the system evolution trajectory, demonstrates the interactive process of stakeholders' behavior, and finds out the key factors affecting the system equilibrium strategy. The result shows that (1) the means of government guidance will affect the speed and result of system evolution; (2) the strategy of stakeholders depends on the comparison of costs and benefits; (3) the probability of ideal events is positively correlated with the economic benefits and negatively correlated with incremental cost of green building. This study can provide theoretical guidance for local governments, developers and consumers to make scientific decisions, and provide practical enlightenment for government to play a more active role in green building market. In the global practice of sustainable agricultural development, China has put forward a plan for agricultural green development, with strict control from the production side to ensure the safety and health of green products "from farming land to dinner table" through strict control from the production side, and green planting is one of the key technologies. Green planting technology (GPT) is an important initiative in China to achieve sustainable agriculture under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Farmers' acceptance of this technology not only requires national publicity and promotion, but also the adoption of agricultural entities across the country. In this study, we widely distributed questionnaires to farmers in 26 provinces and cities, and received 970 valid responses. This paper uses structural equation model (SEM), a multivariate statistical analysis method, to analyze the influencing factors of farmers' intention to adopt GPT. These results demonstrated that the farmers first consider their own behavioral competences and personal gains and losses before deciding to adopt GPT, followed by the impact of people closely related to farming, while environmental concerns and environmental values rank last. Agricultural technology extension plays an intermediary role in farmers' behavioral intention, and government support acts as a safeguard. The findings will not only help to grasp the reasons behind ineffective promotion of GPT to improve the dissemination and adoption of GPT, but also enable government agencies and authorities to better understand the views of farmers, and subsequently formulate feasible policies and plans. This paper deconstructs industrial green transformation into two aspects, industrial efficiency green transformation and industrial structure green transformation. We examine the impact of digital finance development on industrial green transformation using data from Chinese cities and listed companies. The results showed that: (1) digital finance can contribute to the green transformation of industrial structure distinctly but has an inhibiting effect on the green transformation of industrial efficiency. (2) Digital finance can promote capital-using technological progress and support industrial green transformation with its price effect and scale effect. (3) Higher government environmental preferences and governance capacity can strengthen the green transformation effect of digital finance. Strengthening financial supervision and narrowing the digital divide will help digital finance better support industrial green transformation. Improving forestry green total factor productivity is important for promoting green and high-quality development of the forestry industry. Meanwhile, there are major expectations that the digital economy, which is the new engine driving China's economic development, will help achieve the green transformation and high-quality development of the industry. We systematically examine the impact of the digital economy on forestry green total factor productivity in dynamic and spatial dimensions using a dynamic panel model, mediating effect model and dynamic spatial Durbin model based on the Non-Radial Directional Distance Function-Luenberger Hicks Moorsteen model; furthermore, we measure forestry green total factor productivity in 30 provinces in China from 2013 to 2019. Our results indicate that China's forestry green total factor productivity grew at an average annual rate of 5.03% from 2013 to 2019, maintaining an overall stable growth trend, and the growth rate declined in the order of Central, Eastern, Western, and Northeastern China. At the same time, the positive spatial correlation of green total factor productivity in China's forestry industry increased significantly during this period, and the local spatial correlation showed a trend of gradually shifting to the H–H agglomeration feature, with significant path-dependent characteristics and overall spatial spillover effects. The digital economy can significantly promote an improvement in forestry green total factor productivity, and this conclusion is still valid after robustness tests and endogeneity treatment. The analysis of the mechanism of action shows that industrial structure upgrading and green technology innovation are important mechanisms through which the digital economy can improve forestry green total factor productivity. The heterogeneity analysis shows that the enhancement effect of the digital economy on forestry green total factor productivity is more obvious in the eastern and northeastern regions than in the central and western regions. Finally, according to spatial spillover analysis, the positive effects of the digital economy can have spatial spillover effects on neighboring regions that are geographically close and have similar economies. Low-carbon manufacturing is an emerging industrial trend and an important way to achieve sustainable development. As the country with the largest manufacturing scale and carbon dioxide emissions, it is of great practical and theoretical significance to study China's low-carbon manufacturing issues. Based on the ternary analysis perspective of simmelian tie, this paper chooses to identify the influencing factors through the technology-organization-environment research framework, and derives the pathways of low-carbon manufacturing through the fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis method. The research results show that: (1) Under the low-carbon manufacturing goal, stable industrial chain structure and policy-sensitive are the formation reasons for the simmelian tie. (2) From the perspective of simmelian tie, low-carbon manufacturing will be influenced by the driving role of green technological advances, the supporting role of organizational strategies, and the regulatory role of the policy environment. (3) Manufacturing enterprises' low-carbon pathways are directly related to their industrial chain position. Compared with upstream enterprises, downstream enterprises have more diverse low-carbon manufacturing pathways. To the best of our knowledge, no study has adopted the Benefit-of-the-Doubt (BoD) models to evaluate the performance of green institutional environment. It is noteworthy that the previous BoD studies receive great criticism, due to the possible occurrence of improper or extreme weights. To deal with the issue, this paper proposes two new types of cross-efficiency BoD models and provides methodological contributions to the BoD literature. To make empirical contributions to the studies on green institutional environment, this study proposes a new methodological framework to perform efficiency analysis. Our new framework has five types of academic effort: (a) five BoD models (for efficiency analysis); (b) Malmquist index (for sources of dynamic efficiency changes); (c) K-means clustering method (for group classification); (d) Mann-Whitney U test (to examine group heterogeneity); and (e) Gini coefficient (for inequality analysis) and group-based decomposition analysis (for identifying technology diffusion barriers). Such work cannot be found in the existing empirical studies. Empirically, this study focuses on green institutional environment of Chinese provinces from 2010 to 2019. The main conclusions are summarized as follows. First, China has succeeded in achieving an overall growth of green institutional environment during the examined periods. Second, there exists certain method heterogeneity, where our new models perform better than conventional BoD models. Recently, cleaner production (CP) has attracted more attention from developing countries because of its various advantages. However, due to the lack of management constraints, CP activities often cannot keep efficient for long. To alleviate this problem, we put forward the cleaner production management (CPM) system and applied it in China. Based on our previous research, this paper constructed a comprehensive performance evaluation system to effectively supervise the implementation effect of CPM system. By analysing the flows of material, energy and information, a multi-level index system integrating the CPM requirements and sustainable development needs was established. And the quantification of performance was realized by combining the analytic hierarchy process and grey relational degree operation, which reliability was confirmed by sensitivity analysis. The case study in Chinese steel enterprise showed that after implementing CPM system for three years, the overall performance level increased by about 25%. It has confirmed that the application of CPM mode could obviously promote the sustainable green development of the steel enterprise and provide the directions for carrying out CP plans in the next step, such as strengthening innovation of management system and improving employees' awareness of CP activities. As a special type of innovation ecosystem, enterprise green innovation ecosystem (EGIE) provides important support for the formation and diffusion of green innovation. Facing the complexity of green innovation, the research of enterprise green innovation ecosystem needs to rely on new methods and theories. Based on this, we propose to clarify the evolution mechanism of EGIE through synergetics theory. We establish a three-dimensional dynamic evolution model to describe the interactive relationship among green knowledge creation, green product production and green product commercialization in EGIE and conduct simulation analysis. The research finds that under the effect of environmental regulation (ER), EGIE has a trend of collaborative evolution, in which green knowledge creation and green product commercialization show a significant collaborative relationship, while green product production is relatively stable. The life cycle of EGIE will lead to the difference of collaborative state, and the synergy rate of mature EGIE is the fastest. Under different intensities of ER, the synergistic effect of EGIE is significantly different, and higher intensity of ER is more conducive to the collaborative evolution of EGIE. In this paper, a model for the slacks-based measure of super-efficiency in data envelopment analysis (SBM-DEA) was used to measure the green innovation efficiency (GIE) of 79 cities in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) from 2003 to 2018. In addition, the panel threshold model was employed to test the nonlinear relationship between environmental regulation intensity (ERI) and GIE. According to the results, the average GIE in the YRB was 0.68. However, the GIE exhibited a rising and fluctuating temporal trend and the following spatial trend: "lower reaches > upper reaches > middle reaches." Moreover, ERI had a double threshold effect on GIE in the YRB. That is, ERI had a significant positive impact on GIE only when ERI ranged between 0.595 and 0.899. Furthermore, the upper, middle, and lower reaches of the YRB exhibited different nonlinear correlations between ERI and GIE. Therefore, it is essential to implement environmental regulations that are appropriate for the actual conditions of each region. In addition, the per capita income, teacher resources, industrial structure, and actual utilization of foreign capital are significant factors affecting GIE in the YRB. This paper provides an in-depth understanding of the mechanisms of green finance on green innovation, focusing on their spatial and non-linear relationships. Using panel data of 30 provinces of China during the period of 2009–2017, a green finance index is constructed, and the spatial Durbin model and panel threshold model are used. The results reveal that: (1) Green finance and green innovation had significant positive autocorrelation, and the development of green finance in provinces of central and western China were still in the lower-level range. (2) The coefficients of the direct effect and indirect effect of green finance on green innovation were significantly positive, which indicated that green finance was conducive to enhancing green innovation in local and adjacent provinces during the research period. (3) Double threshold effects of green finance on green innovation were observed, which demonstrated that the driving effect of green finance was decreased with the raising of intensity of environmental regulation. The implication of these results is that government should make full use of the radiation and trickle-down functions of green finance and green innovation to narrow regional gaps in sustainable development while maintaining a moderate intensity of environmental regulation. • A green finance index of 30 provinces of China during the period of 2009 to 2017 was constructed on the basis of green credit, green securities, green insurance, and green investment. • The heterogeneity of region and time for green finance were analyzed employing the spatial exploratory analysis, which manifested that the spatial evolution of green finance in China presents a gradient decreasing pattern from east to west. • The impact of green finance on green innovation was explored by the spatial Durbin model, which proved that the direct effect and the spatial spillover effect were significantly positive. • Moderate intensity of environmental regulation helps green finance promote green innovation and this value should not exceed a maximum of 0.935. China has incorporated green technology innovation into its national development strategy based on its national conditions and development needs. The emission permit system is a typical environmental regulation, and one of the driving forces of green technology innovation. Research into the pollution discharge permits system is a key for improving environmental regulations. This study seeks to investigate the impact of pollution permits system on green innovation in China. Using econometric methods, we constructed and tested the model of green technology innovation incentives based on the emission permits system, and applied it to several Chinese counties and districts. The results revealed shortcomings in implementation of the emission permits system in various counties and districts. From a governmental perspective, this was due to poor standardization of management processes and insufficiently innovative supervisory methods. On the corporate side, problems included poor auditing of law enforcement plans, poor implementation of the ledger system, and a lack of disclosure of pollution data. We propose comprehensive strategies to address these issues. This paper explores the emission reduction potential of the pollution discharge permits system at the county level, in accordance with the Porter hypothesis, and provides reference data for the formulation and optimization of energy conservation and emission reduction policies. Financial agglomeration is a key way to promote the green transformation of the global economy and environmental governance. The existing literature mainly analyzed the impact of financial agglomeration on economic development, but rarely examines its comprehensive impact on economic growth and environmental governance considering spatial spillover effects. Based on the perspective of spatial spillover effects, this paper uses panel data of 285 cities above the prefecture-level in China to examine the impact and mechanism of financial agglomeration on green development. The results show that: (1) During the study period, financial agglomeration and green development in China are significantly different in directions of spatial distribution and expansion, but the spatial correlation between the two is relatively high. (2) Financial agglomeration can exert significant spatial spillover effects on green development. (3) Financial agglomeration has more obvious positive spatial spillover effects on green development of cities in the servitization stage or with high administrative level. (4) Industrial structure upgrading effect, labor upgrading effect and technological innovation effect are the main paths that financial agglomeration affects green development. Conventional finance has many deficiencies in promoting green technology innovation (GTI) and energy-environmental performance (EEP). The emerging digital finance is filling the gaps left by conventional finance with the support of information technology. Using panel data from 2011 to 2017, the paper explores the impact of digital finance on energy-environmental performance in China. The results show that digital finance significantly improves China's energy-environmental performance, which remains robust after a series of tests. Green technology innovation is the transmission path through which digital finance affects energy-environmental performance. The impact mechanism test proves that digital finance affects pure technical efficiency rather than scale efficiency. Furthermore, we also find that digital finance has a greater stimulus effect on energy-environmental performance where credit and capital markets are more immature. Financial supervision and environmental regulation from the Chinese government can reinforce the role of digital finance in promoting energy-environmental performance.
