If engineers are to provide sustainable innovations for future societies, engineers should be able to think and act beyond pure technical competence. This is stressed in political and accreditation frameworks all over the world, and universities are trying to respond to this demand. However, in many cases, sustainability practices seem fragmented and there is a lack of knowledge of strategies and few clear examples of good practice. In this paper, activities to integrate sustainability in two engineering institutions, one in Denmark and one in Australia, are systematically compared to provide an understanding of different kinds of activities and their internal as well as external enablers. A conceptual framework to provide overview of education for sustainability activities and their enablers has been proposed, where activities are related to actors and resources at both university and national levels. The conceptual framework has been developed iteratively – moving back and forth trying to find a suitable structure to capture the contextual pillars of the activities in the two cases, using state-of-art within the research field of education for sustainable development to fill out potential blind spots in the case-material and, finally, continuously shaping the storylines in the two cases to provide the needed overview and understanding of the similarities and differences of the approaches. The interplay between the framework and the case-stories provides a platform for change, as the framework does not only create an overview of activities, it also points out potential routes not taken, and the case studies provide examples of activities, which can be transferred with careful consideration to the internal as well as external context. Renewable energy sustainability plays a significant role in ensuring energy security, improving environment and promoting sustainable development of economic and social. This paper focuses on assessing and analyzing the sustainability and influencing factors of 27 EU countries' renewable energy. By DPSIR-Four-Dimensional indicators system, four sustainability dimensions of energy, economy, society and environment are considered and integrated. To deal with the randomness and fuzziness of multi-dimensional metadata, and to conduct assessment without standard, we develop a nonlinear multi-factor assessment model (projection pursuit fuzzy clustering model with accelerated genetic algorithm based on real coding). The results show that the CO 2 emissions, energy productivity, non-renewable energy emission intensity, energy dependence, electricity price and policy support are closer related to the renewable energy sustainability. The strongest sustainability countries are Denmark and Sweden. From the overall analysis, time-series analysis shows that general sustainable level is a wave of growth. The geographical analysis shows that the countries with better sustainable development are mainly located in the central region, showing a belt distribution from north to south. An Eco-Industrial Park is a community of businesses located together, exchanging material and energy with each other, to achieve sustainability advantages for its participants. The main benefits of this kind of parks are related to the three dimensions of sustainability: economic, environmental, and social. An important problem when designing and redesigning an Eco-Industrial Park is the infrastructure planning to connect plants. In this context, the connectivity of this network plays a significant role, because of material and energy sharing, and the new dependence and the problem thereof: failures are also propagated within the network. In this sense, the goal of this work is to formulate and solve an optimization problem to design the material network of an EIP, considering environmental, economic, and resilience aspects in this effort. Specifically, this problem is constructed based on two well-known EIPs: Kalundborg, in Denmark, and Ulsan, in South Korea. The novelty of the present model is to simultaneously consider both aspects, configuring an EIP which not only optimizes its usual economic benefits but also defines its topology to improve resilience. Therefore, the resulting configuration would achieve economic and environmental benefits, ensuring the operation of the park if any participant suffers a disruptive event. In order to analyze and to compare the use of this optimization model when designing EIPs, five configurations are obtained for each case study: three single-objective solutions, optimizing the economic, environmental, and resilience aspects, separately; and two multi-objective solutions, considering the economic and environmental aspects, and the economic, environmental, and resilience aspects, simultaneously. The resulting individual configurations present the best value for each assessed characteristic among all the cases considered, even when comparing them with the reported situation of the park. These solutions represent an orientation to project changes on the existing Eco-Industrial Parks in Kalundborg and Ulsan. Finally, even though the proposed model presents several simplifications, it allows to design more resilient and more sustainable EIPs.
