Environmental crises and increasing pressure from governments are responsible for the appearance of various green approaches to be considered in supply chain management. One of these approaches is sustainable supply chains, which have been implemented in different aspects of supply chains. Most third-party logistics (3 PLs) companies now provide their services utilizing the sustainable supply chain approach. In this study, we consider a 3PL in a supply chain with two goals: decreasing carbon emission and delivery time using a game theoretic approach, which is considered for the first time. We suppose that consumers are aware about the green transportation. Also, it is assumed that two manufacturers deliver their products to the same retailer using a 3 PL. The manufacturers use the 3 PL mainly because it is a way to provide green transportation and increase customer satisfaction by ensuring that products are delivered in a timely fashion to the retailer. This paper examines product pricing, the greenness determination for the first manufacturer's product, and the variables for the 3 PL, including the amount of carbon dioxide emissions and delivery time. Three scenarios are considered in this research: a centralized game and two decentralized games. The results show that it is essential to establish competition between the supply chain members to obtain greater profitability and an acceptable level of sustainability indicators. In the decentralized Stackelberg game between the manufacturers, they earn the highest profit. In today's competitive world, gathering precise context knowledge is a critical barrier for industry practitioners, professionals, and researchers in supply chain management, impeding their capacity to acquire expertise and give effective management awareness. In this regard, this study aimed to identify the data-driven capabilities of supply chain management. Realising the abovementioned issues, the existing literature on supply chain management needs to be further reviewed to explore the data-driven capabilities for sustainable supply chains. The study presented a systematic literature review on a data-driven sustainable supply chain to achieve this goal. One hundred ninety-seven documents from various publications were identified for bibliometric and network analysis from the Scopus database using specific keywords related to the research concept published during 2013–2023 through inclusion and exclusion criteria. The emerging themes were identified using the "R" package and reviewed the papers were reviewed in theme directions. The study showed that implementing data-driven and sustainable technologies could assist strategic decision-making. Also, Data-driven solutions can effectively improve sustainability in supply chain network operations performance. Over the past two decades, researchers have investigated buyer-supplier relationships (BSRs) to foster supply chain decarbonization as a countermeasure to the effects of climate change. However, the academic intellectual foundation is still far from maturing, not only because of its novelty but also because scholars have focused on narrow topics and theoretical lenses. Thus, this paper aims to understand the present intellectual structure of BSRs in low-carbon supply chains (LCSCs) while showing the lack of knowledge and the need to investigate research topics through multiple theoretical lenses. In this study, a literature review was conducted by collecting data without date restriction in July 2023 and analyzing 804 peer-reviewed articles from top-ranked academic journals. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were applied for the paper's content analysis, including a multiple correspondence analysis and a homogeneity analysis of variance by means of alternating least squares (HOMALS) to map the data. The results show a high degree of fragmentation within the present theoretical foundation of BSRs in LCSCs, including a limited application of theoretical lenses and the need for a balanced research agenda. Based on the assessment of the existent literature, 29 research propositions are presented and they are categorized under eight theoretical lenses that constitute the interpretive framework. This study contributes to building theoretical knowledge of supply chain management 1) by analyzing the present intellectual foundation while mapping investigated research topics and theories in a two-dimensional graph and 2) by proposing a balanced research agenda with 29 research propositions to develop the field of BSRs in LCSCs. Supply chain effectiveness and general societal prosperity, as well as economic and ecological productivity will be highly affected in the next decades, entailing challenges for the supply chain and logistics sector. Thereby this sector plays a significant role within the transformation process of economic systems, yet the capacities of it remain up till now underestimated. This paper suggests a holistic approach to assess transformation potential of the supply chain and logistics sector towards more sustainable economic systems while defining innovative business strategies to meet future macroeconomic developments. Information has become an extremely important commodity nowadays. The privatization of corporate social responsibility cost information has a negative impact on the sustainable development of supply chain. Hence, it is important to set up a reasonable coordination mechanism to encourage the supply chain members to reveal the true corporate social responsibility cost information. This paper investigates corporate social responsibility-sensitive supply chain, where a contract supplier sells products through a brand retailer. The contract supplier can invest in corporate social responsibility activities, but its corporate social responsibility cost information is only privately known to him. According the corporate social responsibility cost information revealed by the supplier, the retailer will decide whether to cooperate with him for a long time. Stackelberg game is used to explore the impact of the cost information asymmetry on the decision of supply chain members. The paper compares the decision effects under information asymmetry and symmetry decision, and designs a coordination mechanism for promoting the supplier to reveal the true corporate social responsibility cost information and achieving the supply chain coordination. The results show that the decision-making effect under symmetric information is better than asymmetric information, and the supplier's profit under the designed mechanism is not lower than that under asymmetric information. Moreover, the designed mechanism can improve the supplier's commitment to corporate social responsibility and eliminate double marginal effect to a certain extend. The scientific formulation of procurement and inventory plans is an important topic in the steel industry, when considering both economic and environmental impacts in an uncertain market environment. Robust optimization methods offer an effective solution to this problem. This study has investigated a multi-echelon and multi-period front-end supply chain centered on a steel enterprise under uncertain purchase prices and demand. The goal is to minimize the costs associated with mining, processing, transportation, procurement, and inventory along with the corresponding carbon emission costs. To address this issue, we present a robust rolling horizon model (RRHM) that considers the inventory capacity constraints of steel enterprise and incorporates ore grade requirements. Subsequently, the RRHM was reformulated into a solvable mixed-integer linear programming model, and the relationship between the robust model and a specific deterministic model was established. Finally, the model was validated by generating instances based on real scenarios. The results demonstrate that the robust rolling horizon model proposed in this paper outperforms both the Sample Average Approximation (SAA) strategy and the (s, S) strategy in terms of cost and robustness. In addition, a sensitivity analysis of the key parameters was conducted. The findings reveal that the unit inventory, mining, and carbon emission costs have a limited impact on the total cost, highlighting the robustness of the model. A strategy supporting the development towards a circular economy is industrial symbiosis (IS). It is a form of collaborative supply chain management aiming to make industry more sustainable and achieve collective benefits based on utilization of waste, by-products, and excess utilities between economically independent industries. Based on an extensive analysis of published studies on existing IS collaborations and interviews with central stakeholders of a comprehensive IS, this paper investigates IS from a supply chain collaboration perspective. A theoretical framework is built and used to discuss how industrial symbiosis pursues sustainability and to identify the main collaboration aspects and performance impacts. This framework is then used in the analysis of selected published cases. Based on this, we derive propositions on the organizational and operational requirements for collaboration in the context of IS networks, related to the supply chain integration and coordination practices. As IS has only received little attention in the operations and supply chain management community, our propositions directly lead to future research directions. Furthermore, the analysis in this paper provides directions to increase the feasibility and resource efficiency of IS networks and can hence be used by stakeholders involved in these networks. In India, approximately one-third of agricultural produce is wasted every year due to the different issues present in the post-harvest supply chain stages. The supply chain management of perishable products becomes complex and challenging due to the inclusion of its perishability dynamics. Quality is the main factor that governs the buying or discarding of perishable products by consumers. Therefore, the main aim of this research work is to develop an accurate and efficient image processing model for the classification of the product (Tomato) based on its quality for managing the supply chain. There are three novelties in this research work. A four-stage supply chain architecture integrated with the image processing system at mandi, and warehouses is proposed (First). This image processing system is developed in two stages. In stage I, the acquired images of tomato during its life cycle are labelled with the help of machine learning algorithms (Second). This labelled data is used in stage II for the development of a classification model to segregate the product into various grades. For this, an optimized architecture of seven-layer Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model is developed followed by optimization of its hyperparameters simultaneously using Design of Experiments (DOE) technique (Third). The optimized CNN model achieved maximum accuracy of 88.40% and reported an execution time of 7 min. Further, the results of standard hyperparameter optimization techniques like Grid search, Random search, Bayesian, and Hyperband are compared with the proposed DOE technique on the optimized CNN architecture. The work done in this paper enables the supply chain managers to take accurate and rapid decisions for pricing, procurement, storage, and transportation at various stages of the supply chain leading to Industry 4.0. Capacity sharing, as a collaborative strategy among manufacturers, aims to alleviate this problem by sharing manufacturing capabilities to meet demand with large fluctuating ranges. This paper explores a novel supply chain network design problem considering capacity sharing with third-party manufacturers. Specifically, the problem involves location choices for owned manufacturing plants and distribution centers and the selection of third-party manufacturers. Third-party manufactured products can only be shipped to distribution centers, whereas products from plants can be shipped directly or through distribution centers to customer zones. In this network, customer demand and the product prices of third-party manufacturers are assumed to be uncertain. To address uncertainties, we formulate a distributionally robust chance-constrained model for the problem. The probability distributions of the uncertainties are characterized using Wasserstein ambiguity sets. The incorporation of chance constraints serves to enhance the level of satisfactory customer demand. To ensure tractability, we reformulate the distributionally robust model as a solvable model employing duality theory. Finally, we conduct numerical experiments based on a real-life manufacturing company to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed model. The results confirm that the proposed model reduces the cost standard deviation by an average of 21.9% and increases reliability. Our study can present a reliable framework for designing a capacity-sharing supply chain network for manufacturing enterprises that optimizes cost while improving customer satisfaction by over 95%. Strategy Corporation Social Responsibility (CSR) has received a lot of attention lately and is mainly related to environmental protection in a single supply chain under the condition of the constant tax or subsidy imposed by government, this paper studies a price competition model of two environmentally friendly and harmful competing supply chains consisting of one manufacturer and one retailer respectively, adopting two-stage Stackelberg game under the condition of incomplete knowledge. Assume that the manufacturers don't know the retailers' knowledge, but they are aware of the prior probability of retailers about selling which type of product under the decentralized supply chain, and the higher the prior probability is, the more likely manufacturers tend to produce the environmentally friendly PV panels. This paper first quantifies the impact of products on the environment, studies the impact of which on competing supply chains' profit and the tariffs. This paper finds that only the tariffs set by government and the values of the environmental impact satisfy a three-dimensional area, can the firms ensure the stable competitive market. Results of this analysis show that government cannot impose extreme tax or subsidy on firms, and the environmental impact in the centralized supply chains is higher than that in the decentralized supply chains. This paper validates the results through a case of Photovoltaic (PV) industry from the perspective of CSR, and the numerical results show that there are significant impacts of different governmental policy of social responsibility and environment protection on the financial revenue and the profits of the competing supply chains and their members. As inputs to virtually all supply chains (SCs), mineral resources drive the modern economy. However, despite the substantial sustainability impact of the initial stages of mineral SCs, these remain largely outside the scope of sustainable supply chain management (SSCM). This paper aims to map the intersection of the literature on sustainability in mineral SCs and SSCM, thus bridging the current gap, and to propose research directions for future work. The paper presents a structured content-analysis based literature review of 67 peer-reviewed, English-language journal papers listed in the Web of Science database. These have been identified via a keyword search for SC-, mineral- and mining-specific terms. The content analysis is based on the work of Beske and Seuring (2014), which is abductively complemented with mineral SC-specific practices to build a comprehensive SSCM for minerals framework. Furthermore a contingency analysis is conducted to reveal association patterns between the used constructs. As main contribution, we propose the addition of a Government interventions category as well as mineral-specific practices to the Risk and Pro-activity management categories of the framework. These are identified as essential practices for improving the sustainability in mineral SCs. Moreover, a cascaded mineral SC design is proposed adopting literature based propositions. It complements the traditional downstream buyer-supplier concept in SSCM by adding a second buyer-supplier relationship led by an upstream focal firm for enhanced sustainability management. This design integrates mineral extraction and refinement into a comprehensive SSCM approach and proposes practices for its realization. The resulting approach thus offers the potential for supreme sustainability performance in mineral SCs. Finally, research directions for future studies on this issue are formulated. Closing an existing real-world supply chain and modelling the resultant network are challenging practices. This paper investigates the possibility of closing the chain in a textile company and the effects of such a decision on the profits of the chain. The paper addresses one of the common problems in modelling the return rates of backward chain. Since inaccuracy in estimation of such rates leads to incorrect results, the present model forgoes the need for commonly used predetermined rates by proposing a conditional quality-based segmentation policy. Addition of a secondary chain as a recovery option, quality-dependent incentive rates and flexibility of the model in defining quality, are also among novel points of this paper. First, a bi-objective model is proposed to formulate the chain which includes the manufacturers, distributors and customers in the forward chain and remanufacturing, repairing and recycling centers in the backward chain. This model is applicable to industries with zero-waste strategy and similar recovery facilities. Second, an extensive sensitivity analysis is carried out on a case-study from textile industry. The results reveal that increase in rate of returns with low/medium qualities leads to higher profits since they create more suitable environmental/economical business opportunities. Moreover, closing the supply chain of the company increases the impact of distributors/collectors' performance on the final profits. Hence, managers of the company need to adopt a pricing policy in favor of the distributors/collectors, which equals to lower repairing, remanufacturing and purchase costs from manufacturers, and higher sales prices to customers, manufacturers and recycling center. The vast majority of supply-chain literature has focused on supply chain management, innovation and sustainability, separately. However, little supply-chain research focuses on innovation under the supply chain context, which is expected to deliver a sustainable outcome. Is it a great research opportunity to explore or a subject unworthy of studying? This paper offers a systematic literature review considering 107 related papers published from 1996 to 2014. In this review, both descriptive and thematic analyses demonstrate it to be a great research opportunity worthy of exploring. A conceptual framework containing the definition of sustainable supply chain innovation (SSCI) and its distinctive characteristics are proposed and identified. Furthermore, some opportunities for the research in future, such as antecedents to SSCI, are suggested and discussed in this paper. This paper argues for the use of Total Interpretive Structural Modeling (TISM) in sustainable supply chain management (SSCM). The literature has identified antecedents and drivers for the adoption of SSCM. However, there is relatively little research on methodological approaches and techniques that take into account the dynamic nature of SSCM and bridge the existing quantitative/qualitative divide. To address this gap, this paper firstly systematically reviews the literature on SSCM drivers; secondly, it argues for the use of alternative methods research to address questions related to SSCM drivers; and thirdly, it proposes and illustrates the use of TISM and Cross Impact Matrix-multiplication applied to classification (MICMAC) analysis to test a framework that extrapolates SSCM drivers and their relationships. The framework depicts how drivers are distributed in various levels and how a particular driver influences the other through transitive links. Today, the task of developing reverse logistics and closed-loop supply chains in both developed and developing industries is accepted as a vital need in our societies. The growing interest in reverse issues can be clearly seen in the large number of publications, especially the ones that consider case studies in various industries. Based on its missions, Journal of Cleaner Production (JCP) is one of the most active journals in this field. Therefore, a comprehensive review is undertaken of the publications in the field of reverse logistics and closed-loop supply chains; the selection process is based on the articles accepted online in the Journal of Cleaner Production . The aim of this paper is to review, categorize, and evaluate the related papers in order to provide a systematic view of past work and an appropriate vision for future study. A total of 83 accepted online papers up to 31 December 2014 have been selected and reviewed. The selected papers are then analyzed based on their content and the appropriate developed categories. The results clarify the main trends in reverse logistics and closed-loop supply chain subjects for the Journal of Cleaner Production and the evaluations reveal some suggested opportunities for new directions of research for the journal. In a context of growing complexity of supply chains and pressure from multiple stakeholders for more transparency, there is a trend in research and practice towards building methods for supply chain sustainability assessment. This trend represents a core issue in research but rarely takes a multiple stakeholder perspective. Based on a literature review, a qualitative and quantitative content analysis of sustainability reports, a survey, and interviews with various stakeholders, this paper suggests a set of sustainability aspects to exchange data to support the sustainability assessment of supply chains. The focus is set on the inter-related automotive and electronics industries which are representative sectors of this growing need for transparency and assessment and reflect the complexity of the issue. The outcome and main differences between companies and other stakeholders (e.g., Non-Governmental Organisations, researchers) is highlighted as well as the overall result of this work: a suggestion for 36 sustainability aspects to exchange sustainability data along the supply chain. By integrating empirical information, this paper emphasises the need to define precisely which sustainability aspects can be found in the different dimensions of sustainability and shows the importance of the governance dimension in sustainability research. It also aims at encouraging a standardised data exchange by taking into account company demographics and data exchange accessibility to allow comparability between companies and supply chains and support decision-makers. The results are meant for companies to improve and monitor the sustainability performance of their organisation and supply chain, improve communication through corporate sustainability reports, and provide more transparent information to customers and final consumers. The integration of Circular Economy (CE) and Eco-Innovation (EI) principles flourished as a primary paradigm in Supply Chain Management (SCM) toward both sustainable growth and resiliency. Nonetheless, the challenges in paving the way for CE and EI-focused SCM are the most significant dilemma. Accordingly, this paper attempts to identify the most significant challenges with a case study on the pharmaceutical industry of Iran's emerging economy. Then provide a novel strategic guideline, which roots in the coordination mechanisms. Indeed, this is one of the first papers to provide in-depth insights into the interaction between coordination contracts and challenges of CE and EI-focused Pharmaceutical SCM (PSCM) towards sustainability and resilience fulfillment. To do so, a novel mixed method has been employed. First, a systematic literature review (SLR) has been applied to extract those challenges. Next, according to experts' views, the Fuzzy-Delphi method has been employed to screen the extracted challenges. Afterwards, a list of Game Theoretical Coordination Contracts (GTCCs) was identified via the second stream of literature review. Then, the fuzzy version of SECA (Simultaneous Evaluation of Criteria and Alternatives) has innovatively been developed to measure the finalized challenge weights and GTCC performance scores simultaneously. Eventually, GTCCs were clustered, and the results denoted that the diamond category, including cost-tariff, profit-sharing, cost-sharing, and revenue-sharing-commission, would be the appropriate mechanism for dealing with the inefficiency of Supply Chain (SC) main functions. Due to factors such as increasingly stringent regulations and growing public awareness, companies are trying to reduce exposure to economic, environmental and socio-political risks in their supply chains. This paper addresses the problem of assessing such sustainability issues supply chain-wide. First, to clarify the status quo regarding current approaches, it reviews the literature and then groups the various approaches. Second, the paper provides a conceptual framework for supply chain sustainability assessment. Finally, an overview of available methods is provided, and three approaches to assessing and aggregating sustainability indicators are proposed. These approaches allow for the aggregation of the sustainability performance of individual companies into a supply chain-wide sustainability performance by means of quantitative and qualitative indicators. The results are based on a literature review of sustainability assessment in supply chains as well as on focus group workshops with experts from the European automotive and electronics industry. This paper contributes to the theory and practice of sustainability assessment in supply chains by providing a literature analysis, seven key industrial requirements, a conceptual framework and aggregation approaches. The framework and the methods integrate a comprehensive sustainability perspective emphasizing the understudied social dimension. The expiration of many deteriorative products imposes high costs on the supply chain. A new strategy is proposed in this paper that integrates technological capabilities and supply chain management initiatives to overcome this challenge. The technological capabilities equip the supply chain with a regenerative process to reuse the expired products in other products. On the other hand, to facilitate and optimize the application of the technology, the integration and coordination techniques of the supply chain are employed. This innovation is in accordance with the zero-waste concept arising in the circular economy era and circular supply chain. The paper focuses on integrating a supply chain consisting of one retailer and one manufacturer and developing a new buy-back coordination mechanism to provide enough incentives for the cooperation of members and encourage them to participate in the regenerating operations. It is proved that the proposed strategy is economically feasible if and only if the revenue of each unit of reused product in addition to the saving on its disposing cost, is greater than its reprocessing cost. Furthermore, it is shown that an integrated supply chain equipped with the mentioned technology earns more than one that only benefits the integrated decisions of the whole supply chain. The efficacy and intricacy of the developed model are validated in a dairy supply chain that revalues expired products by turning them into a type of fertilizer. Moreover, a thorough sensitivity analysis of the paper indicates that the mean and standard deviation of demand positively encourage the cooperation strategy while the replenishment cycle time has adverse effects on the profitability of members. The global sustainability development mission of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 is easy to suggest, but incredibly difficult to put into action. Fortunately, continuing reliance on green conversion technologies could effectively address business concerns of energy expenditures, ecological pollution, and fossil fuel depletion. To promote sustainable practices, many researchers and practitioners have put their hopes in the environment-friendly use of biomass. Biomass supply chain management, which contributes to saving the planet, societies, and costs, has a high potential for sustainable development. Besides, successful implementation of regulatory policies that incorporate tax and incentive strategies into decision-making processes has shifted biomass businesses toward greener practices. To this end, quantitative analytics propose primary tools in developing sustainability-driven decisions for biomass supply chains. However, the literature lacks a comprehensive classification of methodologies applied in this field which incorporate the role of policy mechanisms into managerial decisions. The current study conducts a systematic review of 450 peer-reviewed papers, where we apply a rule-governed content analysis approach that includes collecting, filtering, and categorizing the prior research in a reproducible manner. We also classify the collected materials using deductive and inductive approaches to determine various structural dimensions and associated analytic categories. In the context of biomass supply chain management, we provide evidence that energy crops and forest-based biomass are the most addressed biomass feedstock types in the existing literature, while municipal solid waste sources could be explored further in future research. Given increased awareness about modern slavery in supply chain management (SCM), this paper undertakes a systematic literature review (SLR) covering 106 published articles. We first carry out a descriptive analysis, with results showing that modern slavery research is on an upward trajectory but suffers from a lack of primary data and theory application. We then extract themes from the published articles and use them to provide theory elaboration of Gold et al. (2015) model of modern slavery in SCM. Specifically, we introduce business culture and high impact risk factors like pandemics as new institutional factors; highlight external stakeholders like recruitment agents and audit firms as integral to understanding the business context of modern slavery; and add prevention and remediation to detection and response as discrete categories in managing modern slavery risks. We also discuss the gaps in modern slavery research in supply chains. Finally, we propose that reshoring, industry 4.0 and supply chain collaboration represent SCM specialisms that can inform modern slavery research going forward. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The supply chain of rare earth metals plays a crucial role in producing thin-film solar photovoltaics (PVs), which are vital for renewable energy generation. However, this supply chain is often characterized by opacity, inefficiencies, and security concerns especially since those rare earth metals come from mainly one supplier, China. Also, the solar PVs' certificates are purely technical and fail to consider the ethical sourcing and sustainable supply chain management conditions of mining. The working conditions of the miners are often neglected and are least prioritized. In this paper, a blockchain-based solution was proposed to leverage the intrinsic decentralized blockchain features including traceability, transparency, non-repudiation, and accountability in the supply chain of thin-film solar PVs, to safeguard not only the technical conditions of the mined products but also the ethical conditions of the workers during mining. Ethical mines must uphold good safety standards, pay their workers a fair wage, adhere to working hours, and legal working age. The solution paves the way to ethical mining where the certification of the PVs is not granted unless both technical and ethical conditions are met. The supply chain of thin-film PVs that goes from mining the rare earth metals in China, where more than 70% of the rare earth metals used are extracted from, to the disposal at the end-of-life (EOL) of the PVs was presented. Smart contracts to enable the on-chain traceability of the registration, manufacturing, assessment, delivery, and disposal of PVs were developed. The solution exploits the tamper-proof logs of the distributed ledger to ensure accountability and record transactions as part of the data provenance. This paper proposes an integrative approach to exploring the contribution of supply chain management (SSCM) to business performance. Three dimensions of SSCM, i.e., inbound sustainability, internal sustainability, and outbound sustainability, were proposed. The conceptual model was tested in the context of the Chinese manufacturing sector using partial least squares structural equation modeling. The results showed that outbound sustainability was directly related to business performance, while inbound and internal sustainability indirectly affected business performance. The model also revealed that customer integration enhanced the relationship between internal sustainability and outbound sustainability. The results suggested that supply-side and demand-side sustainability had unique roles and that the entire supply chain should be integrated when exploring the link between SCCM and business performance. A supply-side collaborative advantage was necessary but not sufficient, and business performance was achieved only when demand-side value creation was realized. Over the last decade, significant attention has been devoted to Closed-Loop Supply Chain (CLSC) design problems. As such, this review aims at assessing whether the current modelling approaches for CLSC problems can support the transition towards a Circular Economy at a supply chain level. The paper comprehensively assesses the extent to which existing modelling approaches evaluate the performance of supply chains across the complete spectrum of sustainability dimensions. Also, the capability of the current approaches of incorporating strategic, tactical, and operational decisions is considered, along with adopted solution methodologies. As a result, a comprehensive analysis was performed on 254 selected articles. This paper emphasises how most of the current literature in the field is affected by a disconnection between supply chain design and the founding principles of Circular Economy. Specifically, the CLSC literature exhibits a reductionist interpretation of the Circular Economy. CLSC studies focusing on all three dimensions of sustainability are relatively rare, and performance measurement approaches appear to be very much focused on monetary issues. While methodological contributions appear adequate to focus on the non-deterministic nature of CLSC design problems, there is paucity of empirically-grounded research. In recent years, microalgae have received a lot of attention as an alternative feedstock for biofuel production due to numerous advantages such as fast growth rate, high lipid and carbohydrate content, and lack of competition with food production. However, one of the main barriers preventing the commercialization of biofuel production from microalgae is related to the supply chain management issues, and research efforts in the industry and academic communities have been put into this area to deliver solutions. This paper provides a comprehensive and systematic review of studies in the context of the microalgae-to-biofuel supply chain to investigate problems that must be addressed to develop a reliable supply chain for real-world applications. Firstly, an introduction of biofuel production from microalgae and the general structure of the microalgae-based biofuel supply chain are presented. Secondly, decision-making levels in the microalgae biofuel supply chain along with associated supply chain decisions are discussed. Thirdly, the different sources of uncertainty that affect the performance of the supply chain as well as optimization approaches for dealing with uncertainty are reviewed. The integration of sustainable practices within the fashion supply chain has been one of the areas receiving increased attention due to global competition and stricter regulations. The concept of Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM) ensures that eco-friendly practices have been adopted by many global fashion brands. Fashion industries in developing countries such as Vietnam, one of the leading fashion manufacturing countries in South-East Asia, are under tremendous pressure to comply with sustainability norms. Therefore, this paper aims to review the recent trends in SSCM in Vietnam's fashion and retail industries. A four-step approach was adopted: collection of information through literature or data collection (Step 1), classification and codification (step 2), input of industry experts (Step 3) and analysis of the above three inputs (Step 4). The findings showed that although Vietnam is among the top five exporting countries of textiles and garments globally, the concept of a sustainable supply chain is new to many of the Vietnamese supply chain players. Four out of five stakeholders claimed that they are attempting to achieve sustainability by reducing environmental pollution, taking care of the labor force, and pursuing future sustainable materials as well as renewable energy resources. In addition, one of the stakeholders, the retailers, regularly focus on ethical practices in their sustainable sourcing. These practices help Vietnam to concurrently diminish its environmental impact and ensuing negative consequences as well as improve the country's social and economic sustainability. Abstract This paper examines the benefit of the reward-penalty mechanism (RPM) in a two-period closed-loop supply chain (TPCLSC) where a manufacturer sells new products in the first period, and then commits the collector to collect used products and conducts remanufacturing in the second period. Game-theoretic models are developed to explore and compare the following scenarios, i.e., the TPCLSC with RPM and without RPM. The equilibrium decisions are derived under both cases. The results show that: (i) the government's RPM not only decreases the selling prices in both periods, but also raises the collection rate; (ii) the RPM always results in a profit increase to the collector; (iii) the manufacturer prefers remanufacturing with RPM if the target collection rate is below a threshold; but if the target collection rate is too high, the RPM does harm to the manufacturer regardless of the reward-penalty intensity. Then we examine the differences between a conventional single-period model and our TPCLSC model. The results indicate that: (i) the RPM has a greater effect on the manufacturer in TPCLSC than in a single-period CLSC, particularly in the case of higher reward-penalty intensity; (ii) it is necessary for the government to adopt the RPM to motivate the manufacturer and the collector by setting a reasonable target collection rate and raising the reward-penalty intensity. Our work extends prior research that has only examined CLSC with either RPM or two-period model. Under cap-and-trade regulation, this paper investigates the decision and coordination in the dual-channel supply chain arising out of low-carbon preference and channel substitution. From the game theoretical perspective, we develop the decision-making models of the centralized and decentralized supply chain, which consist of one manufacturer and one retailer. We design an improved revenue-sharing contract to effectively coordinate the manufacturer and retailer. The results suggestthe government make cap-and-trade regulation to reduce carbon emission efficiently andrealize coordinated development betweenthe economy and environment. In addition, the supply chaincan obtain greater profits based on the consumer's low-carbon preference. This paper explores the dimensions that influence supply chain sustainability learning, how these dimensions are inter-related, and how they can impact in the evolution of supply chain sustainability trajectories. Employing a systematic literature review technique, this paper offers a combined scoping and tertiary review to shed light into the concept of supply chain sustainability learning. In total, 33 review articles were analyzed (20 from tertiary review and 13 from scoping review), covering over 3652 primary research articles combined. The findings allowed for the emergence of four major contributions. First, an integrated framework of supply chain sustainability learning is proposed, which includes key dimensions such as sustainability capabilities and environmental turbulence. Second, this paper develops a process-based approach, describing four non-linear distinct processes (i.e., set-up, operating, sustaining, and updating) that allow supply chains to learn. Third, it articulates a clear and important conceptual distinction between the constructs of sustainability transitions and supply chain sustainability trajectories, emphasizing the relevance of the latter for supply chain sustainability learning. In the background of economic globalization, the rapid development of information technology and the individualization of customer demand make it difficult for a single enterprise to cope with the increasingly complex market competition. The traditional competition mode between enterprises is difficult to continue. Instead, it is the competition between one supply chain and another supply chain that becomes important. To obtain a sustainable competitive advantage, corporate social responsibility has gradually become the focus of supply chain management. In reality, enterprises in supply chains generally have a long-term, dynamic and stable cooperative relationship, and their corporate social responsibilities have complexity characteristics, which would change with time. Therefore, it is more practical to conduct a dynamic research on the social responsibility decision-making in competitive supply chains under the continuous time background. This study contributes a new approach to the literatures on competitive supply chains and corporate social responsibilities in supply chains by extending the static perspective to a dynamic one, so as to analyze the application of corporate social responsibilities in competitive supply chains. By constructing competition models with two two-echelon supply chains, this paper uses differential game theory to study the decision-making related to corporate social responsibility in supply chains in three situations: decentralized decision-making, centralized decision-making and combined decision-making. This paper determine and contrast the optimal price and corporate social responsibility decision-making in each situation, and analyze the impacts of corporate social responsibility, supply chain reputation and supply chain competition on supply chain revenues. Through simulation analysis, this paper find that corporate social responsibility is an effective tool to realize sustainable supply chain. The corporate social responsibility effect of the centralized supply chain is the greatest. Consumer social responsibility preference, corporate social responsibility efficiency and competition intensity are positively correlated with corporate social responsibility effort. Discount rate and CSR cost coefficient are negatively correlated with corporate social responsibility effort. Abstract: This paper introduces the special issue of the Journal of Cleaner Production on “Sustainability and Supply Chain Management”. This special issue mirrors the increasing relevance of this topic for both practitioners in companies, and academics. The purpose of this special issue is to serve as a catalyst to this important topic. Environmental and social problems and challenges do not stop at the gates of single companies, but have to be considered along the supply chains as the entities across which related material and information flows are organized. The aims of the paper are to introduce current research topics and provide an overview of the single papers. The papers cover supply chain strength of regions and regional activities as well as actions taken by small- and medium-sized manufacturing and public organizations. The papers in this issue also take a look at performance indicators and closed-loop supply chain aspects. The increasingly severe global environmental problems have urged most people to incorporate environmental protection into their daily lives. Therefore, low-carbon supply chain management has become crucial. This paper studies a dual-market low-carbon supply chain operation in urban and rural markets with one manufacturer and two retailers. Three scenarios are considered: no government intervention, government intervention and joint promotion under government intervention. By establishing and solving three differential game models, we give the dynamic technological innovation, advertising and store promotion strategies of the manufacturer and two retailers and show the impact of government intervention and joint promotion on emissions reduction and performance. The results show that: first, government intervention can increase technology innovation efforts and decrease advertising efforts, while joint store promotion under government intervention has a positive effect on manufacturer's advertising and technological innovation efforts; second, government intervention may increase the profits of the manufacturer, although it will undoubtedly reduce the profits of the retailers, while joint store promotion under government intervention can further improve the profits of the manufacturer and retailers; third, compared to the preferences of rural consumers, manufacturer's technological innovation strategy relies more on the price and promotion preferences of urban consumers. Moreover, the preference differences between the two types of consumers have a weak impact on the manufacturer's advertising strategy, while the price preference of rural consumers has a more significant impact on the advertising efforts of the manufacturer. Overall, the research results can provide valuable suggestions for the members of the low-carbon supply chain in the dual market to improve the economic and environmental performance of the low-carbon supply chain. The challenges of sustainable development require whole supply chains and networks to drive change and innovation. However, most existing research on sustainable innovations is on a company level and the dominating company focus in practice drives "silo" approaches, short-term thinking, and profit maximization. Consequently, there is a need for research and new models that facilitate sustainable supply chain innovations. The purpose of this paper is to identify, categorize, and evaluate the importance of critical factors for the realization of sustainable supply chain innovation, and to contribute with a process model for the development of sustainable supply chain innovation. A systematic literature review and content analysis of relevant sustainable supply chain innovation literature were performed in five steps starting with (1) question formulation followed by (2) locating studies, (3) selection and evaluation, (4) analysis and synthesis, and (5) reporting and using the results. The analysis resulted in 14 main categories of critical factors. Collaboration is by far the most frequently observed main category, followed by strategic orientation, culture, practices, and political context. The paper contributes with a process model for the realization of sustainable supply chain innovation. The process model is based on a design-thinking model for innovation where the critical factors are integrated into different spaces for innovation. In practice, the model could provide managers with the most critical factors for sustainable supply chain innovation, and could provide advice on when and how to manage these factors during the innovation process. Operational limitations at different levels of a supply chain network lead to the development of sustainable partnership structures. In almost all industries, in supply, manufacturing, distribution and sales sectors, there are some technological and capacity constraints arising from various reasons. In this restricted environment, the competition to gain more market share develops a dynamic framework through which a permanent improvement is fulfilled. This paper examines the researches related to competitive supply networks from a different perspective. In order to identify the existing patterns and efficiently guide the upcoming trends, a structural model is developed. To the best of our knowledge, there is no comprehensive review of supply networks concentrating on different types of partnerships and collaborative structures among the networked organizations. In this paper, with the aim of identifying future directions, more than 140 papers in competitive supply networks are reviewed focusing on partnership and network structures. Then, the accumulated knowledge based on the adopted methodology is properly synthesized and analyzed via schematic illustrations. This leads to an accelerated procedure in coverage of the corresponding gaps and facilitates the succeeding developments. Incorporating environmental sustainability into production systems and supply chain management perspectives is a growing issue; this requires thorough efforts in measuring the environmental performance of such systems and benchmarking these against industry standards, through the usage of appropriate indicators. The usage of environmental indicators in order to monitor and manage sustainability issues is an ongoing topic of debate and deliberation in the scientific community, which has generated the development of several methodological and conceptual approaches, often incorporated into Life Cycle Assessment frameworks, enabling the evaluation and monitoring of cumulative polluting impacts resulting across the whole product supply chain. In this field, the main challenge is to identify indicators to be employed in environmental assessments, in such a way that a precise account of sustainability issues is given without overloading end-users with overly complex and redundant information. By utilising well-established environmental indicators measuring the sustainability performance of supply chains, this paper aims at critically assessing the amount of redundancy embedded in current performance measurement systems, also identifying the subset of environmental indicators that, if employed, could cover a wide amount of environmental impact categories without redundancies and providing decision-makers with a clear perspective. The apparel supply chain is an example of a complex global supply chain where sustainability issues are a concern and where no satisfactory answers have been achieved yet, especially in social aspects. The growth in importance of social sustainability represents a strategic change in the sector with the necessary involvement of different tiers and external stakeholders to mitigate the negative social impacts. In this paper, a qualitative analysis through the application of content analysis using NVivo software is carried out, first to identify the structure and the main entities in this supply chain, and then to understand the main drivers towards social sustainability management. Six global companies were analysed, considering their sustainability reports from 2014 to 2018. The findings showed that social sustainability is a part of strategic goals as policies and commitments, and several actions have been developed along the supply chain to promote human rights, labour conditions, social development, and product responsibility, with external stakeholders collaboration. Finally, this article contributes to understanding how social sustainability should be managed in the apparel sector in a global supply chain context. There is no doubt that since the last decade, as the focus towards sustainability has grown significantly in the supply chain field, many empirical and conceptual papers have been published in journals. This study aims to investigate the present and emerging trends in the field of SSCM (sustainable supply chain management), meanwhile exploring future research directions. This article conducts the meta-analysis and systematic review of 362 research papers published in the well known peer-reviewed journals in the last sixteen years (2004–2019). The present study structured the reviewed literature with the following categories: drivers and barriers of the sustainable supply chain, adopted multi-criteria-decision-making techniques, year-wise number of research papers, names of journals and publishers, and classification of articles based on research design and method. This study draws an up-to-date picture of the recent developments, emerging trends, and gaps for future studies in the field of SSCM. The finding shows that the area has dominated by MCDM (Multiple-criteria decision making) based research methods and firms-level studies. Furthermore, researchers need to employ efficient algorithms and advanced economic modelling and conduct studies on the macro-level (country, and region-levels) to explore new linkages. In today's competitive business environment, corporations attempt to achieve sustainability through innovation. Innovation is considered by researchers and scholars to be a key driver for achieving sustainability. One of the key parts in any sustainable supply chains is sustainable supplier evaluation and selection. However, few sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) studies have focused on sustainable supplier evaluation and selection, particularly in the context of sustainable innovation management. Thus, supplier evaluation and selection studies that consider overall sustainability (social, environmental, and economic) innovation criteria are nearly non-existent. To deal with this issue, this paper proposes a decision framework to assess sustainable innovative suppliers. A combination of best worst method (BWM) and modified Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment of Evaluations (PROMETHEE) is employed as an integrated model in the analysis. The BWM is initially applied to identify the sustainable innovation criteria weights, and then the modified PROMETHEE is used to analyze the suppliers' performance. A manufacturing case example is employed to verify the utility and applicability of the proposed methodology. Carbon emissions tax has been recognized as an effective market-based mechanism to curb carbon emissions, which makes every participant in the supply chain rethink their optimal operational decisions. Motivated by an iron and steel supply chain under the carbon emissions tax regulation, this paper investigates the optimal operational decisions for both supplier and retailer in the supply chain with a call option contract. Specifically, this paper considers a supply chain consisting of one risk-neutral supplier and one risk-averse retailer. To effectively match supply with the uncertain demand while reducing the carbon emissions, the retailer can choose to purchase call options from the supplier, and thus is allowed to adjust the final order quantities after the demand realization. The optimal order and production policies with and without the call option contract are derived. Further, it is demonstrated that the call option contract can benefit both the retailer and supplier, improve the performance of the whole supply chain and decrease invalid carbon emissions. In addition, the introduction of call option contracts can mitigate the effect of carbon emissions tax and risk aversion on the order quantity of the retailer. Sustainable supply chain management has been a topic of high interest to scholars and practitioners over the last 30 years. Accordingly, many review papers have been published on this topic with various areas of focus. Nevertheless, the overall body of literature still lacks a systematic review that thoroughly explores sustainability-driven decisions in the agriculture sector. To fill this research gap, the present paper presents an extensive review of 247 quantitative studies on sustainable agricultural supply chains. Our review scope includes both crop-based and livestock sectors that are monitored by eco-social corporate initiatives or government sustainability-driven legislation. To do so, we employ a content analysis-based review method, which is well known as an effective means of conducting literature reviews in a transparent, systematic, and rule-governed way, to rigorously collect, filter, and classify the existing research context. We classify the collected materials based on different structural dimensions and related analytic categories, which are obtained from both deductive and inductive categorization techniques. More specifically, we thoroughly evaluate the review results from four research perspectives – agricultural planning, supply chain management, sustainability development, and modeling methodology – aiming at presenting an overview of quantitative research projects. Fostering business activities has been advocated as a more appropriate strategy, replacing aid-based initiatives for achieving sustainable economic development of underprivileged societies. However, the little familiarity with the working of supply chains serving the respective markets is obstructing our efforts to devise suitable strategies to promote corporate activity in underdeveloped areas. The paper aims to critically evaluate applicability of established supply chain management related constructs in base of the pyramid market setting. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect data in 60 face-to-face interviews, with buyer–supplier dyads, focusing micro-entrepreneurs in Pakistan. We used partial least squares algorithm (SmartPLS 3) to fit a structural equation model to the data. Communication emerged as prime driver construct linked to tactical purchasing, technological integration with customers, technological integration with suppliers and supply chain partner development. The paper, while extending largely formal market–focused supply chain literature to informal settings, enriches our understanding of related phenomena in base of the pyramid markets. Findings of the paper will not only assist practitioners in grasping dynamics of business-to-business markets at the base of the pyramid but will also aid in understanding causality of certain supply chain management practices. Earlier studies in the sustainable supply chain (SSC) have been introduced since its submission, yet, research of sustainable supply chain finance (SSCF) is still insufficient. Also, these studies did not consider uncertainty in corresponding with the uncertain environment of the supply chain deficiencies, the integration of sustainable development and supply chain finance is essential. Hence, this paper evaluating a set of measurements to provide sustainable supply chain finance in the gas industry under uncertainty. In this paper, TODIM (acronym in Portuguese for Interactive and Multi-criteria Decision-Making) and Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) methods based on the Best-Worst Method (BWM) will be applied according to neutrosophic set to increase the accuracy of evaluation under uncertainty. According to expert evaluations, the results show that financial attributes and product/service management are the most substantial metrics for enhancing a firm's performance and obtain sustainable supply chain finance. Moreover, obtain price and cost information, consider product/service level, technology management, and demand management are important to build sustainable supply chain management. In order to achieve superior energy-saving performance of products, both the upstream and downstream firms in a green supply chain intend to form R&D (Research and Development) collaborations. This paper analyzes via a game-theoretical approach two typical cooperative behaviors, Cartelization and Cost-sharing contract, of the two chain members. Comparisons are carried out between cases of Cartelization, Cost-sharing contract and a benchmark of non-cooperation. Results rely on both the comparative efficiency which captures the technology difference between the members and the effectiveness factor which measures the consumer green awareness and government subsidy. Specifically, for moderate comparative efficiency and effectiveness factors, the upstream firm mostly favors a Cartelization, the downstream firm generally prefers a non-cooperative scheme while the chain-wide profit mostly peaks under a Cost-sharing contract. However, low comparative efficiency and large effectiveness factor lead to different preferences such that Cartelization becomes least beneficial for the upstream firm but most favored by the downstream firm and the chain. A Cost-sharing contract brings more profit to both members and the chain than a non-cooperative mode does, and a Cartelization is Pareto-improving among the three under certain conditions. Chain-wide collaboration always benefits the consumers and the environment rather than a non-cooperative case does. Over the past few decades, companies have shown growing concerns in relation to the environmental impact of their manufacturing activities. Green supply chain management (GSCM) has been considered by the manufacturers as a feasible option to reduce the environmental impact of operations while simultaneously improving their operational performance. The literature suggests that further research on institutional pressures, performance, and environmental practices are needed, especially in the case of developing countries. The present paper explores the GSCM pressures, practices, and performance observed in suppliers of a Brazilian automotive supply chain. The data were treated using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) provided by SmartPLS software. The results show that the economic and environmental performance of the studied supply chain is positively related to the adoption of GSCM practices. In addition, the present research also identified the institutional pressures that influence this supply chain to pursue green supply chain management practices. The results of this study provide managerial and theoretical approaches for different industries in Brazil to focus on environmental awareness by adopting GSCM practices. Risk management in Supply Chains has gained increasing attention over the last years. At the same time the pressure to consider social issues in global and interconnected supply chains has risen as well. These issues pose risk to supply chains since their occurrence may cause adverse stakeholder reaction through e.g. reputational losses. Despite the growing importance of supplier management as a key process within supply chains and the frequently articulated demand for a quantitative assessment of associated risks, such approaches are missing so far. Thus, the aim of this paper is to develop a model to efficiently estimate and assess social risks along global supply chains. For this purpose, Leontief’s Input Output model is combined with country risks and sector specific labour intensities. In addition, a fuzzy analytical hierarchy process is used to weigh the various considered social risks. Thereby the focus is on the upstream supply chain of actors in a supply chain. The approach is developed generally, opening the possibility of adaption to different types of input-output data bases and using different social risks discussed in social life cycle assessment. The fuzzy analytical hierarchy process facilitates the operational application in companies, where different people with differing preferences are involved, e.g. in procurement decisions. The model is applied to a case study of a German premium car manufacturer to demonstrate and validate the approach. It is shown, how – based on the developed model – the assessment of supply chains risks can be carried out. The approach allows an assessment of the supply chain as a whole, i.e. considering all upstream tiers, and of specific tiers. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis with regard to the obtained weights is conducted to verify the final aggregative risk values. The results show that there are huge differences in the social risks associated with different suppliers as well as different risk structures along the n-tier chain. This helps prioritizing any projects with the aim to improve the living and working conditions. In summary the model has a great benefit for practitioners in purchasing functions of focal companies and can be a helpful tool to support the efficient handling of social issues along supply chains. At the same time, its academic contributions lie in extending the life cycle sustainability analysis through a (multi-regional) socially extended input output model (SEIO) for social risk assessment in sustainable supply chain management. Sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) is a topic that has become increasingly important in recent years. However, very few papers focus on studying SSCM from both leadership and learning perspectives. In this research, we carry out a content-based literature review on the intersections of Supply Chain leadership, Supply Chain Learning and SSCM; we propose a conceptual framework on how focal companies assuming a leadership role initiate and disseminate sustainable practices in their supply chains. Three types of sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) strategies (i.e., reactive, contributive and proactive) have been identified in this research based on four dimensions of SSCM governance, supply chain learning, supply chain leadership and SSCM performance. It is argued that two new constructs of supply chain learning and supply chain leadership are an integral part of the SSCM conceptual framework developed from the literature and have significant implication to our understanding of SSCM. This paper develops a modeling approach to investigate supply chain firms' strategic decisions to select a capacity portfolio in green technologies for their operations. Our approach enables one to study the equilibrium solution of the entire supply chain network with multiple suppliers and manufacturers. The market and policy-based uncertainties in emission permit price and customer demand are considered, while the supply chain firms can purchase or sell the credit for emission on a carbon emission trading market. We propose a stochastic two-stage model in which the technological capacity investment should be determined in the first stage of the game considering both permit price and demand uncertainties. Once the uncertainties are clear in the second stage, supply chain firms will decide upon their quantity and price to their customers. Proposed analytical and numerical results elucidate the uncertainty value of carbon permit price from novel real option perspectives. The result reveals that the uncertainty of carbon price might have a two-sided impact, both as a risk factor and a potential opportunity for investing in green technologies. The numerical case study shows results corresponding to a paradox, resulting in a balance between cooperation and competition between supply chain parties. Closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) as one of the important configurations of the circular economy (CE) has received considerable attention in sustainability matters. It is composed of characteristics that, when identified, studied, and categorized, help not only to a better understanding of the current contributions in the literature but also lead to formulating new models. This research presents one of the first in-depth studies to investigate factors influencing CLSCs. It concerns the investigation of the models which are designed based on the game theory (GT). Therefore, the reviewed works focused on cooperation and competition among the game participants. A systematic literature review is implemented as a four-step process consisting of material collection, a descriptive analysis, category selection, and evaluation stage to review and discuss the works that focus on CLSC and use GT simultaneously. A content-based analysis is carried for the final works, which include 215 papers. The identified characteristics of these papers are classified into 12 main categories. Moreover, they are divided into subcategories to highlight the contribution of each paper. Accordingly, results are derived, and gaps are explained. • This is the first review that analyzes factors influencing closed-loop supply chains. • It concerns the investigation of those models which are designed based on the game theory. • In order to an in-depth analysis, a content-based method is carried for 215 papers. • The identified characteristics of the models are classified into twelve main categories. • An important finding proves that sharing mechanism has got the priority by the researchers. Sustainable value creation is a term that is widely used in sustainable business model literature, and it is gaining importance in other management fields. While there is still confusion on the meaning of this concept, researchers encourage studies that take a network perspective to generate new knowledge and a better understanding of it. In this paper, we address this call by taking a supply chain perspective, which is a type of network, and by focusing on one specific supply chain activity: procurement. Through a single case study of a French multinational, we investigate who creates sustainable value and for whom, taking a stakeholder theory lens. The case study is based on an inductive and qualitative-driven mixed-methods approach, involving interviews of key procurement and sustainability employees, ethnographic observation, and content analysis to provide new knowledge in both the sustainable business model and sustainable supply chain management fields. The findings provide empirical data that show, in the case of the firm studied, that the procurement function has a key role to play to create sustainable value for multiple stakeholders within and outside the firm. Sustainable procurement creates sustainable value for the firm, suppliers, clients, investors, municipalities, schools, NGOs, and associations. This value relates to economic, social, environmental and ethical dimensions. To our knowledge, this is the first study that clearly underlines the role of sustainable procurement to create sustainable value, which is relevant to guide researchers in digging further the importance of the procurement function and the supply chain lens in the sustainable business model field. The findings also highlight the need for top management and supporting functions such as finance to build capacity among the procurement department to develop sustainable procurement practices as, with a long-term perspective, it improves the sustainability performance of the firm and its supply chain partners. This paper studies the game model of two sustainable supply chains under competition in product sustainability, derives the equilibrium structures of the two-chain system and generates the managerial insights. When the supplier and manufacturer within the reverse supply chain are competitive, the sustainability degrees, demands and profits under three structures of this two-chain system are analyzed. It is found that although vertical integration is always a Nash equilibrium, it is Pareto optimal only when the competition degree is low. On the other hand, a more generalized case for the former model is investigated when the supplier and manufacturer are cooperative in bargaining the wholesale price, and the effects of bargaining power to the sustainability degrees, demands, and chain member profits are studied. It is further shown that the structure of vertical integration channels is not an equilibrium unless the two sustainable supply chains are independent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
