China's rapid urbanization growth during the past decades which has highly promoted its affluence has induced various challenges for the countryside. The problem of rural decline of quite many villages which are suffering depopulation in turn challenges the urbanization sustainability in China. By way of in-depth historical and literature review, the paper finds distorted urban-rural relationship and the tendency of village decline owing to China's long time urban biased policy. By further investigating China's new-type urbanization strategy, the paper draws concerns about future rural development which is less mentioned in the plan. Achieving urbanization sustainability is considered to be both an important component of the Sustainable Development Goals and a key way to address the conflict between limited resource constraints and urban continued growth. Regarding the urbanization sustainability, the impact of ecological environment and resource consumption has been widely discussed, while the holistic effect of urban land expansion and urban population dynamics is under-researched. This paper evaluated the urbanization sustainability of 15 urban agglomerations in China from 2000 to 2020, and applied the Geodetector model to investigate its impact mechanism. The results show that at the national level, the level of urbanization sustainability exhibited a trend of first increasing and then decreasing, accompanied by significant spatial differentiation. Spatially, the level of urbanization sustainability in urban agglomerations located in the northeast regions had strong variability during the study period. In contrast, urban agglomerations located in the central region had a lower level of urbanization sustainability due to the unrestricted expansion of urban land. In addition, urbanization sustainability varied according to the development stage of urban agglomerations. Specifically, urbanization sustainability showed a downward trend in the initial development stage, early growth stage and later growth stage of urban agglomeration, and upward trend in mature stage. Economic development level, foreign direct investment, industrial structure and urbanization level were the primary determinants of differences in urbanization sustainability at both national and regional levels. China faces a challenge to balance its future urbanization process with resource conservation and environmental protection. Promoting sustainable construction is identified by the Chinese government as an important strategy to tackle such challenges. To promote sustainable construction, the Chinese government has released a large number of laws, policies and regulations. This paper investigates the policy system in China which aims to facilitate the transition to sustainable construction. The related laws, policies and regulations are analyzed and three main functions are identified, namely regulation and control, economic incentives and supporting activities. The results show that the behaviours of various participants in the construction industry, including the government, developers, builders, suppliers, and designers, are regulated and controlled by these laws and regulations. Subsidy policies, award policies and economic innovation policies are adopted by the government to promote renewable energy applications in buildings and infrastructure construction. The key supporting activities for sustainable construction include strengthening technology innovation, improving standards and evaluation, establishing demonstration projects, and publicity. Two emerging challenges of the current policy system are also identified. They are: a lack of considering social and economic dimensions of sustainable construction, and the ineffectiveness of some key policies such as the environmental impact assessment policy. This paper provides a useful reference for construction corporations and policy makers in China to facilitate sustainable construction in future urbanization process. The problem of fresh water scarcity is one of the major constraints for regional development. Rapid urbanization and rising economic prosperity has further exacerbated problems with not only water quantity, but also water quality. Hence, sustainable utilization of water resources should be a priority, especially in water stressed areas. However, most current studies on optimal water allocation models are based on physical water, which cannot fully reveal the water flows embedded in imported and exported raw materials and products throughout all production processes. Thus, they fail to achieve sustainability goals. Therefore, the objective of this study was to set up an optimal water allocation model for industrial sectors based on water footprint accounting. In this paper, first the internal and external blue and gray water footprints were evaluated. The results indicated that the external water footprint was the major contributor to Dalian's water footprint, which shared around 72.58% of the total. Among all the industrial sectors, the chemical industry and chemical production sector had the highest total WF. Second, analyses of water productivity intensity of the WF and physical water for the industrial sectors were conducted. The comparison of the results revealed that physical water productivity intensity failed to explain the embedded water inflows in the production processes among the regions and sectors. Third, an optimization model based on the water footprint accounting results was thus set up. The optimal consequences indicated that a water allocation plan could meet both the water requirements for the blue and gray water footprints of the industrial sectors, and their target output goals as well. Understanding spatiotemporal urbanization is one of the key questions related to sustainable urbanization in the drylands of northern China (DNC). However, urban expansion in the DNC has not been quantified and assessed effectively due to a lack of reliable data and methods. In this paper, we investigate urban expansion in the DNC at multiple scales, ranging from the whole region to four dryland subtypes, and six urban agglomerations in the DNC from 1992 to 2015. We also simulate urban expansion in the DNC from 2015 to 2050 by coupling the scenario framework of the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) with the Land Use Scenario Dynamics-urban (LUSD-urban) model. Despite of the uncertainty in the research, our findings provide useful insight into the past and the future urban expansion in the DNC. The results indicate that the urban land in the DNC expanded rapidly from 4110 km 2 in 1992 to 20,969 km 2 in 2015. Furthermore, the urban land in the DNC will continue to expand from 20,969 km 2 to 22,987–36,622 km 2 by 2040, with an annual growth of 80.72–403.48 km 2 under all SSPs. Rapid urbanization poses a significant challenge of accommodating the poor, particularly in developing countries such as China where affordable housing has only been initiated a few years ago and will continue to be developed in the coming years. Two major considerations in affordable housing programs are cost and time, as the ability to meet the needs of low-income households is the main target of these programs. However, it is not a common strategy to address affordable housing shortage by means of incorporating sustainability features. One of critical issues is the lack of sustainability framework to integrate sustainability in affordable housing. This paper aims to identify the key sustainability performance indicators (KSPIs) which are useful to guide the development of affordable housing. A preliminary list of 42 key sustainability performance indicators of affordable housing was identified through an extensive literature review. This was followed by a questionnaire survey to solicit the professional views from three stakeholder groups, namely government, developers and academics in the Chinese construction industry. Via the fuzzy set theory and variance analysis, 24 KSPIs were finally highlighted. These findings provide useful references for policy makers as well as industry practitioners to develop affordable housing programs in a sustainable manner. Resilient transportation provides a new perspective for constructing sustainable cities. Although current studies have analyzed transportation resilience from different perspectives, accurately assessing the resilience of urban transport systems remains a significant challenge. This paper proposes a framework to evaluate the static and dynamic resilience of urban transportation systems. Based on systemic thinking and sustainability perspectives, we establish a Bayesian network model that comprehensively considers social, economic, organizational, and technological dimensions to assess the static resilience of urban transportation systems. We adopt percolation theory to determine the minimum required performance (MRP) of road network and explore the spatial distribution of dynamic resilience based on traffic performance under traffic congestion. Results show that the transportation resilience of Xi'an showed a continuous growth trend between 2010 and 2020, from 0.37 to 0.64. In addition, the primary task of enhancing resilience is to improve the system's restorative capacity, adaptive capacity, and resourcefulness. The MRP of the road network is 0.37. The areas with larger resilience loss and percolation time are concentrated along the Second and Third Ring Expressway and in the south and southwest areas. The resilience of the urban center area is more potent. The time of the response process is twice that of the recovery process.
