Understanding future changes in extreme temperature events in a transient climate is inherently challenging. A single model simulation is generally insufficient to characterize the statistical properties of the evolving climate, but ensembles of repeated simulations with different initial conditions greatly expand the amount of data available. We present here a new approach for using ensembles to characterize changes in temperature distributions based on quantile regression that more flexibly characterizes seasonal changes. Specifically, our approach uses a continuous representation of seasonality rather than breaking the dataset into seasonal blocks; that is, we assume that temperature distributions evolve smoothly both day to day over an annual cycle and year to year over longer secular trends. To demonstrate our method’s utility, we analyze an ensemble of 50 simulations of the Community Earth System Model (CESM) under a scenario of increasing radiative forcing to 2100, focusing on North America. As previous studies have found, we see that daily temperature bulk variability generally decreases in wintertime in the continental mid- and high latitudes (>40°). A more subtle result that our approach uncovers is that differences in two low quantiles of wintertime temperatures do not shrink as much as the rest of the temperature distribution, producing a more negative skew in the overall distribution. Although the examples above concern temperature only, the technique is sufficiently general that it can be used to generate precise estimates of distributional changes in a broad range of climate variables by exploiting the power of ensembles.

A calibrated single-model ensemble (SME) derived from the NCAR Community Atmosphere Model, version 3.1, is used to test two hypothesized emergent constraints on cloud feedback and equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS). The Fasullo and Trenberth relative humidity (RH) metric and the Sherwood et al. lower-tropospheric mixing (LTMI) metric are computed for the present-day climate of the SME, and the relationships between the metrics, ECS, and cloud and other climate feedbacks are examined. The tropical convergence zone relative humidity (RHM) and the parameterized lower-tropospheric mixing (LTMIS) are positively correlated to ECS, and each is associated with a different spatial pattern of tropical shortwave cloud feedback in the SME. However, neither of those metrics is linked to the type of cloud response hypothesized by its authors. The resolved lower-tropospheric mixing (LTMID) is positively correlated to ECS for a subset of the SME having LTMID over a threshold value. LTMI and the RH for the dry, descending branch of the Hadley cell (RHD) narrow and shift upward the posterior estimates of ECS in the SME, but the SME bias in RHD and concerns over poorly understood physical mechanisms suggest the narrowing could be spurious for both constraints. While calibrated SME results may not generalize to multimodel ensembles, they can enhance the process understanding of emergent constraints and serve as out-of-sample tests of robustness.

Merging forecasts from multiple models has the potential to combine the strengths of individual models and to better represent forecast uncertainty than the use of a single model. This study develops a Bayesian model averaging (BMA) method for merging forecasts from multiple models, giving greater weights to better performing models. The study aims for a BMA method that is capable of producing relatively stable weights in the presence of significant sampling variability, leading to robust forecasts for future events. The BMA method is applied to merge forecasts from multiple statistical models for seasonal rainfall forecasts over Australia using climate indices as predictors. It is shown that the fully merged forecasts effectively combine the best skills of the models to maximize the spatial coverage of positive skill. Overall, the skill is low for the first half of the year but more positive for the second half of the year. Models in the Pacific group contribute the most skill, and models in the Indian and extratropical groups also produce useful and sometimes distinct skills. The fully merged probabilistic forecasts are found to be reliable in representing forecast uncertainty spread. The forecast skill holds well when forecast lead time is increased from 0 to 1 month. The BMA method outperforms the approach of using a model with two fixed predictors chosen a priori and the approach of selecting the best model based on predictive performance.

A six-member multicoupled model ensemble is created by using six state-of-the-art deep atmospheric convective schemes. The six convective schemes are used inside a single model and make up the ensemble. This six-member ensemble is compared against a multianalysis ensemble, which is created by varying the initial start dates of the atmospheric component of the coupled model. Both ensembles were integrated for seven months (November–May) over a 12-yr period from 1987 to 1998. Examination of the sea surface temperature and precipitation show that while deterministic skill scores are slightly better for the multicoupled model ensemble the probabilistic skill scores favor the multimodel approach. Combining the two ensembles to create a larger ensemble size increases the probabilistic skill score compared to the multimodel. This altering physics approach to create a multimodel ensemble is seen as an easy way for small modeling centers to generate ensembles with better reliability than by only varying the initial conditions.

A diagnostic analysis of relationships between central U.S. climate characteristics and various flow and scalar fields was used to evaluate nine global coupled ocean–atmosphere general circulation models (CGCMs) participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP). To facilitate identification of physical mechanisms causing biases, data from 21 models participating in the Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP) were also used for certain key analyses. Most models reproduce basic features of the circulation, temperature, and precipitation patterns in the central United States, although no model exhibits small differences from the observationally based data for all characteristics in all seasons. Model ensemble means generally produce better agreement with the observationally based data than any single model. A fall precipitation deficiency, found in all AMIP and CMIP models except the third-generation Hadley Centre CGCM (HadCM3), appears to be related in part to slight biases in the flow on the western flank of the Atlantic subtropical ridge. In the model mean, the ridge at 850 hPa is displaced slightly to the north and to the west, resulting in weaker southerly flow into the central United States. The CMIP doubled-CO2 transient runs show warming (1°–5°C) for all models and seasons and variable precipitation changes over the central United States. Temperature (precipitation) changes are larger (mostly less) than the variations that are observed in the twentieth century and the model variations in the control simulations.
