The use of radiomics and artificial intelligence applied for the diagnosis and monitoring of Alzheimer's disease has developed in recent years. However, this approach is not yet completely applicable in clinical practice. The aim of this paper is to provide a systematic analysis of the studies that have included the use of radiomics from different imaging techniques and artificial intelligence for the diagnosis and monitoring of Alzheimer's disease in order to improve the clinical outcomes and quality of life of older patients. A systematic review of the literature was conducted in February 2023, analyzing manuscripts and articles of the last 5 years from the PubMed, Scopus and Embase databases. All studies concerning discrimination among Alzheimer's disease, Mild Cognitive Impairment and healthy older people performing radiomics analysis through machine and deep learning were included. A total of 15 papers were included. The results showed a very good performance of this approach in the differentiating Alzheimer's disease patients—both at the dementia and pre-dementia phases of the disease—from healthy older people. In summary, radiomics and AI can be valuable tools for diagnosing and monitoring the progression of Alzheimer's disease, potentially leading to earlier and more accurate diagnosis and treatment. Artificial intelligence (AI) is an interdisciplinary field that encompasses a wide range of computer science disciplines, including image recognition, machine learning, human−computer interaction, robotics and so on. Recently, AI, especially deep learning algorithms, has shown excellent performance in the field of image recognition, being able to automatically perform quantitative evaluation of complex medical image features to improve diagnostic accuracy and efficiency. AI has a wider and deeper application in the medical field of diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) occurs frequently in southern China and Southeast Asian countries and is the most common head and neck cancer in the region. Detecting and treating NPC early is crucial for a good prognosis. This paper describes the basic concepts of AI, including traditional machine learning and deep learning algorithms, and their clinical applications of detecting and assessing NPC lesions, facilitating treatment and predicting prognosis. The main limitations of current AI technologies are briefly described, including interpretability issues, privacy and security and the need for large amounts of annotated data. Background: Large language models (LLMs) represent a recent advancement in artificial intelligence with medical applications across various healthcare domains. The objective of this review is to highlight how LLMs can be utilized by clinicians and surgeons in their everyday practice. Methods: A systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Six databases were searched to identify relevant articles. Eligibility criteria emphasized articles focused primarily on clinical and surgical applications of LLMs. Results: The literature search yielded 333 results, with 34 meeting eligibility criteria. All articles were from 2023. There were 14 original research articles, four letters, one interview, and 15 review articles. These articles covered a wide variety of medical specialties, including various surgical subspecialties. Conclusions: LLMs have the potential to enhance healthcare delivery. In clinical settings, LLMs can assist in diagnosis, treatment guidance, patient triage, physician knowledge augmentation, and administrative tasks. In surgical settings, LLMs can assist surgeons with documentation, surgical planning, and intraoperative guidance. However, addressing their limitations and concerns, particularly those related to accuracy and biases, is crucial. Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of disability worldwide. At present, however, there are no established biomarkers that have been validated for diagnosing and treating MDD. This study sought to assess the diagnostic and predictive potential of the differences in serum amino acid concentration levels between MDD patients and healthy controls (HCs), integrating them into interpretable machine learning models. Methods: In total, 70 MDD patients and 70 HCs matched in age, gender, and ethnicity were recruited for the study. Serum amino acid profiling was conducted by means of chromatography-mass spectrometry. A total of 21 metabolites were analysed, with 17 from a preset amino acid panel and the remaining 4 from a preset kynurenine panel. Logistic regression was applied to differentiate MDD patients from HCs. Results: The best-performing model utilised both feature selection and hyperparameter optimisation and yielded a moderate area under the receiver operating curve (AUC) classification value of 0.76 on the testing data. The top five metabolites identified as potential biomarkers for MDD were 3-hydroxy-kynurenine, valine, kynurenine, glutamic acid, and xanthurenic acid. Conclusions: Our study highlights the potential of using an interpretable machine learning analysis model based on amino acids to aid and increase the diagnostic accuracy of MDD in clinical practice. Leprosy is a neglected tropical disease that can cause physical injury and mental disability. Diagnosis is primarily clinical, but can be inconclusive due to the absence of initial symptoms and similarity to other dermatological diseases. Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques have been used in dermatology, assisting clinical procedures and diagnostics. In particular, AI-supported solutions have been proposed in the literature to aid in the diagnosis of leprosy, and this Systematic Literature Review (SLR) aims to characterize the state of the art. This SLR followed the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) framework and was conducted in the following databases: ACM Digital Library, IEEE Digital Library, ISI Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed. Potentially relevant research articles were retrieved. The researchers applied criteria to select the studies, assess their quality, and perform the data extraction process. Moreover, 1659 studies were retrieved, of which 21 were included in the review after selection. Most of the studies used images of skin lesions, classical machine learning algorithms, and multi-class classification tasks to develop models to diagnose dermatological diseases. Most of the reviewed articles did not target leprosy as the study's primary objective but rather the classification of different skin diseases (among them, leprosy). Although AI-supported leprosy diagnosis is constantly evolving, research in this area is still in its early stage, then studies are required to make AI solutions mature enough to be transformed into clinical practice. Expanding research efforts on leprosy diagnosis, coupled with the advocacy of open science in leveraging AI for diagnostic support, can yield robust and influential outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Infertility, although not a life-threatening condition, affects around 15% of couples trying for a pregnancy. The increasing availability of large datasets from various sources, together with advances in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), are enabling a transformational change in infertility care. However, real-world applications of data-driven medicine in infertility care are still relatively limited. At present, very little can prevent infertility from arising; more work is required to learn about ways to improve natural conception and the detection and diagnosis of infertility, improve assisted reproduction treatments (ART) and ultimately develop useful clinical-decision support systems to assure the successful outcome of either fertility preservation or infertility treatment. In this opinion article, we discuss recent influential work on the application of big data and AI in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infertility. We evaluate the challenges of the sector and present an interpretation of the different innovation forces that are driving the emergence of a systems approach to infertility care. Efforts including the integration of multi-omics information, collection of well-curated biological samples in specialised biobanks, and stimulation of the active participation of patients are considered. In the era of Big Data and AI, there is now an exciting opportunity to leverage the progress in genomics and digital technologies and develop more sophisticated approaches to diagnose and treat infertility disorders. Hepatocellular carcinoma ranks fifth amongst the most common malignancies and is the third most common cause of cancer-related death globally. Artificial Intelligence is a rapidly growing field of interest. Following the PRISMA reporting guidelines, we conducted a systematic review to retrieve articles reporting the application of AI in HCC detection and characterization. A total of 27 articles were included and analyzed with our composite score for the evaluation of the quality of the publications. The contingency table reported a statistically significant constant improvement over the years of the total quality score (p = 0.004). Different AI methods have been adopted in the included articles correlated with 19 articles studying CT (41.30%), 20 studying US (43.47%), and 7 studying MRI (15.21%). No article has discussed the use of artificial intelligence in PET and X-ray technology. Our systematic approach has shown that previous works in HCC detection and characterization have assessed the comparability of conventional interpretation with machine learning using US, CT, and MRI. The distribution of the imaging techniques in our analysis reflects the usefulness and evolution of medical imaging for the diagnosis of HCC. Moreover, our results highlight an imminent need for data sharing in collaborative data repositories to minimize unnecessary repetition and wastage of resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The clinical standard of care for urothelial carcinoma (UC) relies on invasive procedures with suboptimal performance. To enhance UC treatment, we developed a urinary comprehensive genomic profiling (uCGP) test, UroAmplitude, that measures mutations from tumor DNA present in urine. In this study, we performed a blinded, prospective validation of technical sensitivity and positive predictive value (PPV) using reference standards, and found at 1% allele frequency, mutation detection performs at 97.4% sensitivity and 80.4% PPV. We then prospectively compared the mutation profiles of urine-extracted DNA to those of matched tumor tissue to validate clinical performance. Here, we found tumor single-nucleotide variants were observed in the urine with a median concordance of 91.7% and uCGP revealed distinct patterns of genomic lesions enriched in low- and high-grade disease. Finally, we retrospectively explored longitudinal case studies to quantify residual disease following bladder-sparing treatments, and found uCGP detected residual disease in patients receiving bladder-sparing treatment and predicted recurrence and disease progression. These findings demonstrate the potential of the UroAmplitude platform to reliably identify and track mutations associated with UC at each stage of disease: diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance. Syncope is a medical condition resulting in the spontaneous transient loss of consciousness and postural tone with spontaneous recovery. The diagnosis of syncope is a challenging task, as similar types of symptoms are observed in seizures, vertigo, stroke, coma, etc. The advent of Healthcare 4.0, which facilitates the usage of artificial intelligence and big data, has been widely used for diagnosing various diseases based on past historical data. In this paper, classification-based machine learning is used to diagnose syncope based on data collected through a head-up tilt test carried out in a purely clinical setting. This work is concerned with the use of classification techniques for diagnosing neurally mediated syncope triggered by a number of neurocardiogenic or cardiac-related factors. Experimental results show the effectiveness of using classification-based machine learning techniques for an early diagnosis and proactive treatment of neurally mediated syncope. (1) Background: The objective of this review was to synthesize available data on the use of machine learning to evaluate its accuracy (as determined by pooled sensitivity and specificity) in detecting keratoconus (KC), and measure reporting completeness of machine learning models in KC based on TRIPOD (the transparent reporting of multivariable prediction models for individual prognosis or diagnosis) statement. (2) Methods: Two independent reviewers searched the electronic databases for all potential articles on machine learning and KC published prior to 2021. The TRIPOD 29-item checklist was used to evaluate the adherence to reporting guidelines of the studies, and the adherence rate to each item was computed. We conducted a meta-analysis to determine the pooled sensitivity and specificity of machine learning models for detecting KC. (3) Results: Thirty-five studies were included in this review. Thirty studies evaluated machine learning models for detecting KC eyes from controls and 14 studies evaluated machine learning models for detecting early KC eyes from controls. The pooled sensitivity for detecting KC was 0.970 (95% CI 0.949–0.982), with a pooled specificity of 0.985 (95% CI 0.971–0.993), whereas the pooled sensitivity of detecting early KC was 0.882 (95% CI 0.822–0.923), with a pooled specificity of 0.947 (95% CI 0.914–0.967). Between 3% and 48% of TRIPOD items were adhered to in studies, and the average (median) adherence rate for a single TRIPOD item was 23% across all studies. (4) Conclusions: Application of machine learning model has the potential to make the diagnosis and monitoring of KC more efficient, resulting in reduced vision loss to the patients. This review provides current information on the machine learning models that have been developed for detecting KC and early KC. Presently, the machine learning models performed poorly in identifying early KC from control eyes and many of these research studies did not follow established reporting standards, thus resulting in the failure of these clinical translation of these machine learning models. We present possible approaches for future studies for improvement in studies related to both KC and early KC models to more efficiently and widely utilize machine learning models for diagnostic process. Artificial intelligence (AI) has shown promising results in digestive endoscopy, especially in capsule endoscopy (CE). However, some physicians still have some difficulties and fear the advent of this technology. We aimed to evaluate the perceptions and current sentiments toward the use of AI in CE. An online survey questionnaire was sent to an audience of gastroenterologists. In addition, several European national leaders of the International CApsule endoscopy REsearch (I CARE) Group were asked to disseminate an online survey among their national communities of CE readers (CER). The survey included 32 questions regarding general information, perceptions of AI, and its use in daily life, medicine, endoscopy, and CE. Among 380 European gastroenterologists who answered this survey, 333 (88%) were CERs. The mean average time length of experience in CE reading was 9.9 years (0.5–22). A majority of CERs agreed that AI would positively impact CE, shorten CE reading time, and help standardize reporting in CE and characterize lesions seen in CE. Nevertheless, in the foreseeable future, a majority of CERs disagreed with the complete replacement all CE reading by AI. Most CERs believed in the high potential of AI for becoming a valuable tool for automated diagnosis and for shortening the reading time. Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a chronic liver disease affecting up to 6.5% of the general population. There is no simple definition of NASH, and the molecular mechanism underlying disease pathogenesis remains elusive. Studies applying single omics technologies have enabled a better understanding of the molecular profiles associated with steatosis and hepatic inflammation—the commonly accepted histologic features for diagnosing NASH, as well as the discovery of novel candidate biomarkers. Multi-omics analysis holds great potential to uncover new insights into disease mechanism through integrating multiple layers of molecular information. Despite the technical and computational challenges associated with such efforts, a few pioneering studies have successfully applied multi-omics technologies to investigate NASH. Here, we review the most recent technological developments in mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics. We summarize multi-omics studies and emerging omics biomarkers in NASH and highlight the biological insights gained through these integrated analyses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
