Artificial intelligence (AI) is an interdisciplinary field that encompasses a wide range of computer science disciplines, including image recognition, machine learning, human−computer interaction, robotics and so on. Recently, AI, especially deep learning algorithms, has shown excellent performance in the field of image recognition, being able to automatically perform quantitative evaluation of complex medical image features to improve diagnostic accuracy and efficiency. AI has a wider and deeper application in the medical field of diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) occurs frequently in southern China and Southeast Asian countries and is the most common head and neck cancer in the region. Detecting and treating NPC early is crucial for a good prognosis. This paper describes the basic concepts of AI, including traditional machine learning and deep learning algorithms, and their clinical applications of detecting and assessing NPC lesions, facilitating treatment and predicting prognosis. The main limitations of current AI technologies are briefly described, including interpretability issues, privacy and security and the need for large amounts of annotated data. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignant tumors in China, accounting for the majority of primary liver cancer cases. Liver resection is the preferred curative method for early-stage HCC. However, up to 80–85% of patients have already missed the opportunity of radical surgery due to tumor advances at the time of consultation. Conversion therapies are a series of medications and treatments for initially inoperable patients. For early-stage unresectable HCC (uHCC) patients, conversion therapies are designed to meet surgical requirements by increasing the volume of the residual liver. Meanwhile, for advanced cases, conversion therapies strive for tumor shrinkage and down-staging, creating the opportunity for liver resection or liver transplantation. Background: In vitro maturation (IVM) is indicated in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) who have a very good ovarian response during in vitro fertilization (IVF) and are therefore at high risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). According to the latest practice committee document, IVM could be a major advance in assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures (reduced cost and simplified treatment); nevertheless, retrospective studies of IVM versus IVF still demonstrate lower chances of a live birth with IVM. Could IVM prove to be an optimal first-line treatment approach? And limited information is available concerning the success of the subsequent IVF cycle after the failure of an IVM cycle. Does IVM treatment adversely affect the subsequent IVF cycle, and is this worth considering before performing the IVF cycle for women with PCOS? Methods: This prospective nested case–control study at the Peking University Reproductive Medicine center in China was performed between March 2018 and September 2020. Women aged 20–38 years with PCOS and infertility and who were scheduled for their first IVF attempt were eligible. A total of 351 women were randomly allocated to receive one cycle of unstimulated natural IVM (n = 175) or one cycle of standard IVF with a flexible GnRH antagonist protocol followed by hCG as an ovulation trigger (n = 176). This study involved 234 women (58 women with no blastocysts in the first IVM cycle and 158 women who underwent the first IVF cycle). Cumulative live birth rate at 12 months after oocyte retrieval and OHSS of a standard controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) IVF cycle were compared between 58 women in an IVF cycle following a failed IVM cycle and 158 women who underwent the first IVF cycle. Results: No significant differences were found in the cumulative live birth rate (CLBR), ongoing pregnancy rate, or clinical pregnancy rate at 12 months after oocyte retrieval between the two groups (56.9% vs. 58.9%, p = 0.795; 58.6% vs. 60.8%, p = 0.776; and 84.5% vs. 76.0%, p = 0.178). The incidence of moderate-to-severe OHSS was not significantly different between the groups (6.9% vs. 5.7%, p = 0.742). Additionally, there were no significant differences in the total gonadotropin dose, stimulation duration, number of retrieved oocytes, number of retrieved mature oocytes, or fertilization rates. Conclusions: Even if the first IVM attempt failed in subfertile women with PCOS, comparable cumulative live birth rates were observed in the subsequent IVF cycle. Background: The most effective treatment for end-stage liver diseases is liver transplantation, which is impeded by the shortage of donor livers. Split liver transplantation (SLT) is important for addressing the donor liver shortage. However, full-right full-left SLT for two adult recipients is globally rarely conducted. This study aimed to investigate the clinical outcomes of this technique. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 22 recipients who underwent full-right full-left SLT at Shulan (Hangzhou) Hospital between January, 2021 and September, 2022. The graft-to-recipient weight ratio (GRWR), cold ischemia time, operation time, length of the anhepatic phase, intraoperative blood loss, and red blood cell transfusion amount were all analyzed. The differences in liver function recovery after transplantation were compared between the left and right hemiliver groups. The postoperative complications and prognosis of the recipients were also analyzed. Results: The livers of 11 donors were transplanted into 22 adult recipients. The GRWR ranged from 1.16–1.65%, the cold ischemia time was 282.86 ± 134.87 min, the operation time was 371.32 ± 75.36 min, the anhepatic phase lasted 60.73 ± 19.00 min, the intraoperative blood loss was 759.09 ± 316.84 mL, and the red blood cell transfusion amount was 695.45 ± 393.67 mL. No significant difference in the levels of liver function markers, total bilirubin, aspartate aminotransferase, or alanine aminotransferase between left and right hemiliver groups at 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, and 28 d postoperatively was observed (both p > 0.05). One recipient developed bile leakage 10 d after transplantation, which improved with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography-guided nasobiliary drainage and stent placement. Another developed portal vein thrombosis 12 d after transplantation and underwent portal vein thrombectomy and stenting to restore portal vein blood flow. A color Doppler ultrasound performed 2 d after transplantation revealed hepatic artery thrombosis in one patient, and thrombolytic therapy was administered to restore hepatic artery blood flow. The liver function of other patients recovered quickly after transplantation. Conclusions: Full-right full-left SLT for two adult patients is an efficient way to increase the donor pool. It is safe and feasible with careful donor and recipient selection. The Novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has swept the world and caused a global pandemic. SARS-CoV-2 seems to have originated from bats as their reservoir hosts over time. Similar to SARS-CoV, this new virus also exerts its action on the human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2. This action causes infections in cells and establishes an infectious disease, COVID-19. Against this viral invasion, the human body starts to activate the innate immune system in producing and releasing proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, IL-1β, IL-8, TNF-α, and other chemokines, such as G-CSF, IP10 and MCPl, which all develop and increase the inflammatory response. In cases of COVID-19, excessive inflammatory responses occur, and exaggerated proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines are detected in the serum, resulting in cytokine release syndrome or cytokine storm. This causes coagulation abnormalities, excessive oxidation developments, mitochondrial permeability transition, vital organ damage, immune system failure and eventually progresses to disseminated intravascular coagulation and multiple organ failure. Additionally, the excessive inflammatory responses also cause mitochondrial dysfunction due to progressive and persistent stress. This damages cells and mitochondria, leaving products containing mitochondrial DNA and cell debris involved in the excessive chronic inflammation as damage-associated molecular patterns. Thus, the respiratory infection progressively leads to disseminated intravascular coagulation from acute respiratory distress syndrome, including vascular endothelial cell damage and coagulation-fibrinolysis system disorders. This condition causes central nervous system disorders, renal failure, liver failure and, finally, multiple organ failure. Regarding treatment for COVID-19, the following are progressive and multiple steps for mitigating the excessive inflammatory response and subsequent cytokine storm in patients. First, administering of favipiravir to suppress SARS-CoV-2 and nafamostat to inhibit ACE2 function should be considered. Second, anti-rheumatic drugs (monoclonal antibodies), which act on the leading cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6) and/or cytokine receptors such as tocilizumab, should be administered as well. Finally, melatonin may also have supportive effects for cytokine release syndrome, resulting in mitochondrial function improvement. A novel coronavirus emerged in China in late 2019 as a disease named coronavirus disease 2019. This pathogen was initially identified as causing a respiratory syndrome, but later, it was found that COVID-19 could also affect other body systems, such as the neurological and cardiovascular systems. For didactic purposes, cardiovascular and neurological manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 have been classified in three different groups: acute complications, late complications, and post-vaccine complications. Therefore, the following study has the goal to summarize and disseminate the present knowledge about the cardiovascular and neurological manifestations of COVID-19 based on the latest and most up-to-date data available and, thus, promote more prepared medical care for these conditions as the medical team is updated. Based on what is brought on this revision and its understanding, the medical service becomes more aware of the causal relationship between some conditions and COVID-19 and can better prepare for the most prevalent conditions to associate and, consequently, to treat patients earlier. Therefore, there is a chance of better prognoses in this context and the need to increase the number of studies about complications related to SARS-CoV-2 infection for a better understanding of other associated conditions. Background: Extensive knowledge of allergic multimorbidities is required to improve the management of allergic diseases with the industrialization of China. However, the demography and allergen distribution patterns of allergic multimorbidities in China remain unclear, despite the increasing prevalence of allergies. Methods: This was a real-world, cross-sectional study of 1273 outpatients diagnosed with one or more allergic diseases in Guangzhou, the most populated city of southern China, with leading industrial and commercial centers, between April 2021 and March 2022. Seven allergic diseases (allergic rhinitis (AR), asthma (AS)/cough variant asthma (CVA), atopic dermatitis (AD)/eczema, food allergy (FA), allergic conjunctivitis (AC), drug allergy (DA), and anaphylaxis) were assessed. Positive rates of sensitization to different allergens were measured using an allergen detection system of the UniCAP (Pharmacia Diagnostics, Sweden) instrument platform to compare the groups of allergic multimorbidities against a single entity. Results: There were 659 (51.8%) males and 614 (48.2%) females aged from 4 months to 74 years included in the analysis. The study participants who were diagnosed with allergic diseases had an average of 1.6 diagnoses. Overall, 46.5% (592 of 1273) of the patients had more than one allergic condition, and allergic rhinitis was the most common type of multimorbidity. Women were more likely to suffer from an allergic disease alone, whereas allergic multimorbidities were more likely to be diagnosed in men (p = 0.005). In addition, allergic multimorbidities were common in all age groups, with an incidence ranging from 37.1% to 57.4%, in which children and adolescents were more frequently diagnosed with allergic multimorbidities than adults (18–60 years old) (all p < 0.05). Allergic multimorbidity was observed throughout the year. A difference in the positive rate of allergens sensitization and total immunoglobulin E (tIgE) levels between different allergic multimorbidities was observed. Conclusions: Allergic multimorbidities were very commonly found in nearly half of all patients with allergies. The proportion of allergic multimorbidities varied with the type of disease, sex, age, and allergen distribution pattern. Objective: To explore the gender differences in the psychological symptoms, sleep quality, and quality of life of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Methods: A unified questionnaire was developed to collect clinical data on the psychology and quality of life of IBD patients from 42 hospitals in 22 provinces in China from September 2021 to May 2022. The general clinical characteristics, psychological symptoms, sleep quality, and quality of life of IBD patients of different genders were analyzed via a descriptive statistical analysis. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted, and independent influencing factors were screened to construct a nomogram to predict the quality of life. The consistency index (C-index), receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, area under the ROC curve (AUC), and calibration curve were used to evaluate the discrimination and accuracy of the nomogram model. Decision curve analysis (DCA) was used to evaluate the clinical utility. Results: A total of 2478 IBD patients (1371 patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and 1107 patients with Crohn's disease (CD)) were investigated, including 1547 males (62.4%) and 931 females (37.6%). The proportion of anxiety in females was significantly higher than in males (IBD: 30.5% vs. 22.4%, p < 0.001; UC: 32.4% vs. 25.1%, p = 0.003; CD: 26.8% vs. 19.9%, p = 0.013), and there were differences in the severity of anxiety between the genders (IBD: p < 0.001; UC: p < 0.001; CD: p = 0.050). The proportion of depression in females was higher than in males (IBD: 33.1% vs. 27.7%, p = 0.005; UC: 34.4% vs. 28.9%, p = 0.031; CD: 30.6% vs. 26.6%, p = 0.184), and there were differences in the severity of depression between the genders (IBD: p = 0.004; UC: p = 0.022; CD: p = 0.312). The proportion suffering from sleep disturbances among females was slightly higher than among males (IBD: 63.2% vs. 58.4%, p = 0.018; UC: 63.4% vs. 58.1%, p = 0.047; CD: 62.7% vs. 58.6%, p = 0.210), and the proportion of females with a poor quality of life was higher than that of males (IBD: 41.8% vs. 35.2%, p = 0.001; UC: 45.1% vs. 39.8%, p = 0.049; CD: 35.4% vs. 30.8%, p = 0.141). The AUC values of the female and male nomogram prediction models for predicting poor quality of life were 0.770 (95% CI: 0.7391–0.7998) and 0.771 (95% CI: 0.7466–0.7952), respectively. The calibration diagrams of the two models showed that the calibration curves fitted well with the ideal curve, and the DCA that showed nomogram models could bring clinical benefits. Conclusions: There were significant gender differences in the psychological symptoms, sleep quality, and quality of life of IBD patients, suggesting that females need more psychological support. In addition, a nomogram model with high accuracy and performance was constructed to predict the quality of life of IBD patients of different genders, which is helpful for the timely clinical formulation of personalized intervention plans that can improve the prognosis of patients and save medical costs. The aim of the current study was to analyse the distribution of antimicrobial drug resistance (AMR) among Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa, PA) isolates from Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital (GDPH) from 2017 to 2021, and the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on changes in the clinical distribution and drug resistance rate of P. aeruginosa to establish guidelines for empiric therapy. Electronic clinical data registry records from 2017 to 2021 were retrospectively analysed to study the AMR among P. aeruginosa strains from GDPH. The strains were identified by VITEK 2 Compact and MALDI-TOF MS, MIC method or Kirby–Bauer method for antibiotic susceptibility testing. The results were interpreted according to the CLSI 2020 standard, and the data were analysed using WHONET 5.6 and SPSS 23.0 software. A total of 3036 P. aeruginosa strains were detected in the hospital from 2017 to 2021, and they were primarily distributed in the ICU (n = 1207, 39.8%). The most frequent specimens were respiratory tract samples (59.6%). The detection rate for P. aeruginosa in 5 years was highest in September, and the population distribution was primarily male(68.2%). For the trend in the drug resistance rate, the 5-year drug resistance rate of imipenem (22.4%), aztreonam (21.5%) and meropenem (19.3%) remained at high levels. The resistance rate of cefepime decreased from 9.4% to 4.8%, showing a decreasing trend year by year (p < 0.001). The antibiotics with low resistance rates were aminoglycoside antibiotics, which were gentamicin (4.4%), tobramycin (4.3%), and amikacin (1.4%), but amikacin showed an increasing trend year by year (p = 0.008). Our analysis indicated that the detection rate of clinically resistant P. aeruginosa strains showed an upwards trend, and the number of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains increased year by year, which will lead to stronger pathogenicity and mortality. However, after the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, the growth trend in the number of MDR bacteria slowed, presumably due to the strict epidemic prevention and control measures in China. This observation suggests that we should reasonably use antibiotics and treatment programs in the prevention and control of P. aeruginosa infection. Additionally, health prevention and control after the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic (such as wearing masks, washing hands with disinfectant, etc., which reduced the prevalence of drug resistance) led to a slowdown in the growth of the drug resistance rate of P. aeruginosa in hospitals, effectively reducing the occurrence and development of drug resistance, and saving patient's treatment costs and time. Purpose: To explore the effect of inflammatory factors on inner ear impairment in a sample of Omicron-infected patients with a high rate of vaccination in China. Methods: One hundred and forty-six recovered Omicron-infected patients performed the distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) test and serum test for inflammatory factors; demographic data and vaccination statuses were collected from the questionnaire. Results: Out of 146 patients, the DPOAE pass rate was 81.5% (119/146). Inner ear impairment was significantly correlated with IL-6 titer. The odds ratio (aOR) was 1.24 (95% CI: 1.04–1.49) after adjusting for age, sex, and vaccine characteristics. Notably, this relationship only existed in the 18–60 years group. There were no significant protective effects of vaccination on inner ear function. Conclusions: Inner ear impairment still exists in Omicron-infected patients, which was significantly correlated with IL-6 titer. This relationship was mainly observed in young and middle-aged people, possibly due to a stronger immune response in this age group. Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of donor in vitro fertilization (IVF-D) and donor artificial insemination (AI-D) in clinical outcomes, risks, and costs. Methods: This study analyzed the cycle changes and clinical outcomes in 20,910 IVF-D and 16,850 AI-D cycles between 2013 and 2021 in the Reproductive and Genetic Hospital of CITIC-Xiangya. A cost-effectiveness analysis was performed to evaluate the costs per couple and per live birth cycle in the two treatment groups. Results: IVF-D had higher pregnancy and live birth rates than AI-D (p < 0.001). The cumulative pregnancy and live birth rates for three AI-D cycles were 41.01% and 32.42%, respectively, higher than the rates for one or two AI-D cycles. The multiple birth and birth defect rate of AI-D was lower than that of IVF-D significantly. IVF-D mean cost per couple was higher than that of AI-D (CNY32,575 vs. CNY11,062, p < 0.001), with a mean cost difference of CNY21,513 (95% confidence interval, CNY20,517–22,508). The mean costs per live birth cycle for IVF-D and AI-D were CNY49,411 and CNY31,246, respectively. Conclusion: AI-D is more cost-effective and poses a lower risk for infertility couples than IVF-D, and patients should undergo three AI-D cycles to obtain the highest success rate. Background: The current outbreak of COVID-19 infection, which started in Wuhan, Hubei province, China, in December 2019, is an ongoing challenge and a significant threat to public health requiring surveillance, prompt diagnosis, and research efforts to understand a new, emergent, and unknown pathogen and to develop effective therapies. Despite the increasing number of published studies on COVID-19, in all the examined studies the lack of a well-defined pathophysiology of death among patients who died following COVID-19 infection is evident. Autopsy should be considered mandatory to define the exact cause of death, thus providing useful clinical and epidemiologic information as well as pathophysiological insights to further provide therapeutic tools. Methods: A literature review was performed on PubMed database, using the key terms: "COVID-19", "nCov 19", and "Sars Cov 2". 9709 articles were retrieved; by excluding all duplicated articles, additional criteria were then applied: articles or abstracts in English and articles containing one of the following words: "death", "died", "comorbidity", "cause of death", "biopsy", "autopsy", or "pathological". Results: A total of 50 articles met the inclusion criteria. However, only 7 of these studies reported autopsy-based data. Discussion: The analysis of the main data from the selected studies concerns the complete analysis of 12,954 patients, of whom 2269 died (with a mortality rate of 17.52%). Laboratory confirmation of COVID-19 infection was obtained in all cases and comorbidities were fully reported in 46 studies. The most common comorbidities were: cardiovascular diseases (hypertension and coronary artery disease), metabolic disorders (diabetes, overweight, or obesity), respiratory disorders (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), and cancer. The most common reported complications were: acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), acute kidney injury, cardiac injury, liver insufficiency, and septic shock. Only 7 papers reported histological investigations. Nevertheless, only two complete autopsies are described and the cause of death was listed as COVID-19 in only one of them. The lack of postmortem investigation did not allow a definition of the exact cause of death to determine the pathways of this infection. Based on the few histopathological findings reported in the analyzed studies, it seems to be a clear alteration of the coagulation system: frequently prothrombotic activity with consequent thromboembolism was described in COVID-19 patients. As a scientific community, we are called on to face this global threat, and to defeat it with all the available tools necessary. Despite the improvement and reinforcement of any method of study in every field of medicine and science, encouraging the autopsy practice as a tool of investigation could also therefore, help physicians to define an effective treatment to reduce mortality. Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) is a rare inborn-errors-of-metabolism disorder characterized by devastatingly elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and premature cardiovascular disease. The gold standard for screening and diagnosing HoFH is genetic testing. In China, it is expensive and is always recommended for the most likely HoFH subjects with aggressive LDL-C phenotype. However, the LDL-C levels of HoFH patients and a substantial proportion of heterozygous FH (HeFH) patients overlapped considerably. Here, we performed a cost-effective metabolomic profiling on genetically diagnosed HoFH (n = 69) and HeFH patients (n = 101) with overlapping LDL-C levels, aiming to discovery a unique metabolic pattern for screening homozygotes in patients with severe FH. We demonstrated a differential serum metabolome profile in HoFH patients compared to HeFH patients. Twenty-one metabolomic alterations showed independent capability in differentiating HoFH from severe HeFH. The combined model based on seven identified metabolites yielded a corrected diagnosis in 91.3% of HoFH cases with an area under the curve value of 0.939. Collectively, this study demonstrated that metabolomic profiling serves as a useful and economical approach to preselecting homozygotes in FH patients with severe hypercholesterolemia and may help clinicians to conduct selective genetic confirmation testing and familial cascade screening. In recent years, there has been an increase in the incidence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in rural China. Thus, for better intervention, it is necessary to identify the possible risk factors of MetS. This community-based prospective cohort study was performed to evaluate the relationship between the snoring status and incidence of MetS. In this Northeast China rural cardiovascular health study, 4980 residents aged ≥35 years (2586 men and 2394 women; follow-up proportion: 87.5%) at baseline were recruited between 2012 and 2013 and were followed up between 2015 and 2017. The primary outcome was the incidence of MetS, as defined by the unified criteria for MetS defined in 2009. The residents were classified based on their snoring status, and the outcomes were compared between the two groups. The odds ratio (OR) for MetS incidence was estimated using a logistic regression model and adjusted for confounding factors. With a median follow-up duration of 4.6 years, the MetS incidence was higher among the snorers (men, 26.2%; women, 33.5%) than in the non-snorers (men, 19.7%; women, 23.2%). The participants' diastolic blood pressure was increased at follow-up as compared with the baseline values among the male snorers; however, a decrease was noted among the male non-snorers. Similarly, the female snorers had higher blood glucose levels during the follow-up, whereas the non-snorers had lower blood sugar levels. A significant association was noted between snoring and the incidence of MetS (adjusted OR = 1.51; 95% confidence interval = 1.32–1.74). Moreover, the incidence of severe snoring increased with increased levels of snoring, with severe snorers having an OR twice as high as that of the non-snorers (adjusted OR = 2.10; 95% confidence interval = 1.38–3.20). Overall, snoring was independently associated with a higher incidence of newly diagnosed MetS in rural Northeast China. Thus, more attention should be paid to residents with snoring problems. The performance of ambulance crew affects the quality of pre-hospital treatment, which is vital to the survival for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients, yet remains suboptimal in China. In this retrospective analysis study, we aimed to examine the effect of a citywide quality improvement programme on provision of prehospital advanced life support (ALS) by emergency medical service (EMS) system. EMS-treated adult OHCA patients after the implementation of the programme (1 January 2021 to 30 June 2022) were compared with historical controls (1 June 2019 to 31 August 2020) in Suzhou. Multivariable logistic regression analysis and propensity score matching procedures were applied to compare the outcomes between two periods for total OHCA cases and subgroup of cases treated by fixed or non-fixed ambulance crews. A total of 1465 patients (pre-period/post-period: 610/855) were included. In the 1:1 matched analysis of 591 cases for each period, significant improvement (p < 0.05) was observed for the proportion of intravenous (IV) access (23.4% vs. 68.2%), advanced airway management (49.2% vs. 57.0%), and return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) at handover (5.4% vs. 9.0%). The fixed ambulance crews performed better than non-fixed group in IV access and advanced airway management for both periods. There were significant increases in IV access (AOR 12.66, 95%CI 9.02–18.10, p < 0.001), advanced airway management (AOR 1.67, 95% CI 1.30–2.16, p < 0.001) and ROSC at handover (AOR 2.37, 95%CI 1.38–4.23, p = 0.002) after intervention in unfixed group, while no significant improvement was observed in fixed group except for IV access (AOR 7.65, 95%CI 9.02–18.10, p < 0.001). In conclusion, the quality improvement program was positively associated with the provision of prehospital ALS interventions and prehospital ROSC following OHCA. The fixed ambulance crews performed better in critical care provision and prehospital outcome, yet increased protocol adherence and targeted training could fill the underperformance of non-fixed crews efficaciously. Background: The principle of early flap reconstruction for high-grade traumatic lower-extremity injuries established in 1986 by Godina has been widely accepted. However, the lack of an orthoplastic center in China makes early reconstruction not accessible for all patients with a Gustilo IIIB fracture. This study aimed to analyze the impact of timing on outcomes in lower-extremity traumatic free-flap reconstruction. Methods: A retrospective review identified 394 free-flap reconstructions performed from January 2005 to January 2020 for Gustilo IIIB tibial fractures. Patients were stratified based on the number of debridements: two times or less (early) and more than two times (delayed). The interval between injury and reconstruction, surgery time, hemorrhage volume, length of hospitalization (LoS), wound and bone healing time, flap outcomes, and function restoration were examined based on times of debridement. Results: The mean interval between injury and flap reconstruction in the early-repair group with 6.15 ± 1.82 postoperative days (PODs) was significantly shorter than that of the delayed-repair group with 16.46 ± 4.09 PODs (p < 0.001). The flap harvest time, reconstructive time, and intraoperative blood loss were also significantly less in the early-repair group compared to the delayed-repair group. Interestingly, we observed an 8.20% enlargement of wound size due to multiple debridements in the delayed-repair group. Most importantly, the early-repair group had better outcomes with a decreased risk of total or partial flap necrosis, lower incidence of flap complications, and fewer overall late complications than the delayed-repair group. In addition, the LoS, as well as wound and bone healing time, were notably shorter in the early-repair group. Furthermore, 4.85% of cases in the delayed-repair group experienced additional operations on bone, while no additional operations were performed in the early-repair group. All cases in both groups obtained satisfying functional results, while the early-repair group showed better functional recovery. Conclusions: Early repair with free flaps performed within two instances of debridement had superior outcomes when compared with delayed reconstruction after multiple debridements, consistent with Godina's findings. Background: In this study, we surveyed the prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibody (anti-HCV) among inpatients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and analyzed the correlated factors. Methods: We conducted a retrospective data collection of the HIV-infected inpatients in our hospital from January 2010 to December 2020. We utilized multivariate logistic regression to identify the correlated factors. Results: The proportion of patients screened for HBsAg was 81.8%, which increased from 66.7% in 2010 to 85.7% in 2020. The proportion of patients with anti-HCV screening was 73.9%, which increased from 58.3% in 2010 to 86.7% in 2020. The prevalence of HBsAg positivity was 10.9%, which decreased from 15.0% in the period of 2010–2015 to 9.0% during 2016–2020. Positive anti-HCV was identified in 4.1% of cases. Compared to 4.8% in the period of 2010–2015, there was a similar prevalence of anti-HCV at 3.1% during 2016–2020. Among the HBsAg-positive cases, HBV deoxyribonucleic acid was screened in 70.8% of cases. Among the anti-HCV positive cases, HCV ribonucleic acid (RNA) was screened in 90% of cases. Albumin < 30 g/L, thrombocytopenia and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) > 40 U/L were associated with HBsAg positivity. AST > 40 U/L and higher CD4-positive T lymphocyte counts were associated with HIV/HCV coinfection. Conclusions: The routine screening for both HBV and HCV among HIV-positive inpatients has been greatly improved in the past decade. However, screening for the complete HBV serological markers in HIV-positive inpatients and HCV genotyping among HCV RNA-positive cases leaves much to be desired. Purpose: To explore the predictive value of ACEF scores for identifying the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the general population. Methods: A total of 8613 participants without a history of CVD were enrolled in the follow-up. The endpoint was CVD incidence, defined as stroke or coronary heart disease (CHD) diagnosed during the follow-up period. Cox regression analyses were used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) with respect to the age, creatinine, and ejection fraction (ACEF) scores and CVD. A Kaplan–Meier curve was used to analyze the probability of CVD in different quartiles of ACEF. Restricted cubic spline was used to further explore whether the relationship between ACEF and CVD was linear. Finally, we assessed the discriminatory ability of ACEF for CVD using C-statistics, net reclassification index, and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI). Results: During a median follow-up period of 4.66 years, 388 participants were diagnosed with CVD. The Kaplan–Meier curve showed that ACEF was associated with CVD, and participants with high ACEF scores were significantly more likely to be diagnosed with CVD compared to participants with low ACEF scores in the general population. In the multivariate Cox regression analysis, the adjusted HRs for four quartiles of ACEF were as follows: the first quartile was used as a reference; the second quartile: HR = 2.33; the third quartile: HR = 4.81; the fourth quartile: HR = 8.00. Moreover, after adding ACEF to the original risk prediction model, we observed that new models had higher C-statistic values of CVD than the traditional model. Furthermore, the results of both NRI and IDI were positive, indicating that ACEF enhanced the prediction of CVD. Conclusions: Our study showed that the ACEF score was associated with CVD in the general population in northeastern China. Background: Few studies have investigated associations between meeting 24-Hour Movement Guidelines and preschool children's fundamental movement skills (FMS). This study aimed to investigate the associations between Chinese preschoolers meeting various combinations of the Guidelines and FMS, as well as examining gender differences across those outcomes. Methods: A total of 322 preschool children (181 boys and 141 girls) aged 3–6 years old were recruited from five early-childhood education and care services in China. Children's 7-day physical activity (PA) was assessed using accelerometry, and screen time (ST) and sleep duration were reported by their parents. FMS were assessed by Test of Gross Motor Development 3. Descriptive statistics and gender differences in children's meeting the Guidelines and FMS were calculated using t-tests for continuous variables and Chi-square tests for categorical variables. Results: Most preschoolers met the sleep and ST guidelines, but only 22.3% met the PA guidelines; 4% of preschoolers did not meet any of the recommendations, while 9.3% met all three recommendations. Boys reported significantly higher compliance with all combined recommendations. There were positive associations between meeting the PA guidelines and both locomotor (β = 0.49; p < 0.001) and object control skills (β = 0.21; p < 0.001). A significantly positive relationship was identified between meeting PA + sleep guidelines and locomotor skills (β = −0.16; p = 0.02). A significantly negative association was observed between preschoolers' meeting sleep + ST guidelines and locomotor skills (β = 0.31; p = 0.001). Conclusion: Few preschoolers met all three movement behavior guidelines. The findings suggest that PA levels, especially MVPA, are important for the promotion of FMS. Preeclampsia (PE) is a common and serious pregnancy-specific disorder, which is closely linked with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate whether maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and gestational weight gain (GWG) was associated with preeclampsia and its phenotypes. In this prospective study, 32,531 women with singleton pregnancies were finally included. Compared with women with normal pre-pregnancy BMI, women with overweight and obesity were at increased risk of PE (RR = 1.62, 95%CI: 1.57–1.66; RR = 2.04, 95%CI: 1.97–2.11, respectively), while those who were underweight had a lower risk of PE (RR = 0.84, 95%CI: 0.81–0.88). When compared with women who gained adequate GWG, pregnant women with inadequate GWG and excessive GWG had an increased risk of PE (RR = 1.15, 95%CI: 1.12–1.19; RR = 1.56, 95%CI: 1.52–1.60, respectively). The observed increased risk was generally similar for mild-, severe-, early- and late-onset PE, and the reduced risk was similar for severe- and late-onset PE. No significant interactions between GWG and pre-pregnancy BMI on the risk of PE were identified (p-interaction > 0.05). In conclusion, pre-pregnancy overweight or obesity and excessive GWG have established risk factors for PE, and that the potential risk may vary according to PE phenotypes. Dysphagia is one of the most common symptoms in patients after stroke onset, which has multiple unfavorable effects on quality of life and functional recovery. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation that is widely used to improve deglutition function. Recently, some studies have confirmed that tDCS enhances deglutition function after stroke. However, the number of evaluation indexes used in those studies was small, and the number of trials included was limited. Most importantly, the optimal stimulation protocol is still uncertain and the safety of tDCS has not been reviewed. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to address these shortcomings. Methods: Seven databases were searched entirely, including Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Biomedical Literature Service System (SinoMed), Wan-fang database, and the Chinese Scientific Journals Database (VIP) from inception to 31 December 2021. Two reviewers independently evaluated the eligibility of retrieved data according to the selection criteria and assessed the methodological quality of the studies using the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Outcomes, measures, and indicators used in this study included the dysphagia outcome and severity scale (DOSS), modified Mann assessment of swallowing ability (MMASA), functional oral intake scale (FOIS), functional dysphagia scale (FDS), and Kubota's water-drinking test (KWDT). Sensitivity and subgroup analyses were performed to evaluate the intervention effect more specifically. Results: Fifteen trials with a total of 787 participants (394 subjects in the tDCS groups were treated with true tDCS, and 393 subjects in the control groups were wait-listed or treated with sham tDCS) involving tDCS for dysphagia after stroke and were included in the meta-analysis. Results of this meta-analysis confirmed that tDCS had a positive effect on post-stroke dysphagia. Subgroup analyses revealed that bilateral and high-intensity stimulation with tDCS had a more significant impact on post-stroke dysphagia. Furthermore, no adverse events occurred during the application of tDCS for post-stroke dysphagia. Conclusion: tDCS can promote the recovery of deglutition function in patients with dysphagia after stroke. In addition, bilateral stimulation and high-intensity stimulation may have better effects. Background: COVID-2019 spread rapidly throughout the world from China. This infection is highly contagiousness, has a high morbidity, and is capable of evolving into a potentially lethal form of interstitial pneumonia. Numerous countries shut-down various activities that were considered "not essential." Dental treatment was in this category and, at the time of writing, only non-deferrable emergencies are still allowed in many countries. Therefore, follow-up visits of ongoing active therapies (e.g., orthodontic treatment) must be handled taking special precautions. This literature review aims at reducing in-office appointments by providing an overview of the technologies available and their reliability in the long-distance monitoring of patients, i.e., teledentistry. Methods: A literature review was made according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols (PRISMA-P) guidelines. Randomized clinical trials, cross sectional, observational, and case-control studies were evaluated with the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool for quality assessment and study limitations. Results: A primary search found 80 articles, 69/80 were excluded as non-relevant on the basis of: the abstract, title, study design, bias, and/or lack of relevance. Twelve articles were included in the qualitative analysis. Conclusions: Teleorthodontics can manage most emergencies, reassuring and following patients remotely. The aim set by dental teleassistance was met as it reduced patients' office visits whilst maintaining regular monitoring, without compromising the results. Although our preliminary findings should be further investigated to objectively evaluate the efficacy, cost-effectiveness, and long-term results, we are confident that teleassistance in orthodontics will have a role to play in the near future. Background: Airway stent implantation used in the treatment of benign cicatricial airway stenosis (BCAS) can lead to local granulation and scar formation, resulting in restenosis and treatment failure. Methods: We systematically investigated a paclitaxel-loaded PLGA-coating stent (PLPCS) and analyzed the safety and efficacy of the PLPCS in patients with BCAS. Patients were enrolled from four hospitals in China and observed for six months after implantation, by bronchoscopy performed weekly in the first month and monthly thereafter. The stent was removed immediately upon detection of granulation tissue proliferation, leading to immobility of the stent. Results: Granulation tissue was formed one week after stent implantation, most of which was located at the upper edge of the stent and the narrowest airway in the stent. All stents were removed in three months (mean: 6.51 + 4.67 weeks), with a curative outcome in one case and ineffective results in two. The remaining seven patients developed complications within three months, necessitating early stent removal. The main complication was granulation formation, resulting in difficulty in stent removal. Conclusion: Although PLPCS showed beneficial effects in basic and animal experiments, it cannot prevent airway restenosis in actual practice, mainly due to granulation formation. RPE65-associated inherited retinal dystrophy (RPE65-IRD) is an early-onset retinal degeneration. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical features and natural course of this disease in a Chinese patient cohort with RPE65 biallelic variants. Thirty patients from 29 unrelated families with biallelic disease-causing RPE65 variants underwent full ophthalmic examinations. Thirteen were followed up over time. An additional 57 Chinese cases from 49 families were retrieved from the literature to analyze the relationship between best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and age. Our 30 patients presented age-dependent phenotypic characteristics. Multiple white dots were a clinical feature of young patients, while maculopathy, epiretinal membrane, and bone spicules were common in adult patients. Among the 84 patients, BCVA declined with age in a nonlinear, positive-acceleration relationship (p < 0.001). All patients older than 40 years met the WHO standard for low vision. Longitudinal observation revealed a slower visual acuity loss in patients younger than 20 years than those in their third or fourth decade of life. Our study detailed the clinical features and natural course of disease in Chinese patients with RPE65-IRD. Our results indicated that these patients have a relatively stable BCVA in childhood and adolescence, but eyesight deteriorates rapidly in the third decade of life. Background: The main objective of this study was to use citation networks to analyze the relationship between different publications on the impact of COVID-19 at an ocular level and their authors. Furthermore, the different research areas will be identified, and the most cited publication will be determined. Materials and Methods: The publications were searched within the Web of Science database, using "ocular", "SARS-CoV-2", "ophthalmology", "eyesight", and "COVID-19" as keywords for the period between January 2020 and January 2021. The Citation Network Explorer and the CiteSpace software were used to analyze the different publications. Results: A total of 389 publications with 890 citations generated on the web were found. It must be highlighted that July was the month with the largest number of publications. The most cited ones were "Characteristics of Ocular Findings of Patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Hubei Province, China" by Wu et al., which was published in May 2020. Three groups covering the different research areas in this field were found using the clustering functions: ocular manifestations, teleophthalmology, and personal protective equipment. SARS-CoV-2 is the novel member of coronavirus responsible for the worldwide pandemic COVID-19, affecting all types of people. In this context, established research identified pregnant women as a susceptible group of SARS-CoV-2 infection, although there is still limited data regarding the real impact of COVID-19 in this group. With that purpose, we conducted a systematic review describing the maternal-fetal results of pregnant women infected by SARS-CoV-2, in aim to analyze the profile of the obstetric patients according to the country of origin of the publication. A total of 38 articles were included in this systematic review with 2670 patients from 7 countries, with 20 works published from China (52.6%). We reported significative differences according to the median maternal age, with Spain as the country with the highest age (34.6 years); The percentage of tabaquism; proportion of symptomatic patients in the triage; type of radiological exam (China and France conduct CT scans on all their patients in comparison to the use of chest X-Ray in the rest of the countries studied); percentages of C-sections (83.9% in China; 35.9% Spain, p < 0.001); maternal mortality rate, proportion of patients who need treatments, the use of antivirals, antibiotics, and anticoagulants as well as measurements of the newborns. Perinatal results are favorable in the majority of countries, with very low rates of vertical transmission in the majority of works. The studies collected in this review showed moderate to high index of quality. The different works describe the affectation during the first wave of the pandemic, where the pregnant woman with SARS-CoV-2 infection is generally symptomatic during the third trimester of gestation along with other factors associated with worse prognosis of the disease, such as higher age, body mass index, and further comorbidities developed during pregnancy. In the obstetric patient, proportion of C-sections are elevated together with prematurity, increasing maternal perinatal morbimortality. Differences found between countries could be based on the proper profile of the patient in each region, the period of the pandemic directly affecting how it was managed, and the variations regarding in situ medical attention. The severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-CoV-2 was identified for the first time in China, in December 2019. Confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported around the world; indeed, this infection has been declared a pandemic. Consequently, the scientific community is working hard to gain useful information about the history of this virus, its transmission, diagnosis, clinical features, radiological findings, research and development of candidate therapeutics as well as vaccines. This review aims to analyze the diagnostic techniques used to ascertain the COVID-19 infection, critically reviewing positive points and criticism for forensic implications, obviously including autopsy. Finally, this review proposes a practical workflow to be applied in the management of corpses during this outbreak of the COVID-19 infection, which could be useful in cases of future infectious disease emergencies. Analyzing the diagnostic methods, to date, virus nucleic acid RT-PCR represents the standard method used to ascertain the COVID-19 infection in living subjects and corpses, even if this technique has several criticisms: mainly, the staff should be highly specialized, working in high-throughput settings, able to handle high workloads and aware of health risks and the importance of the results. Thus, IgG/IgM serological tests have been developed, overcoming RT-qPCR duration, costs, and management, not requiring highly trained personnel. Nevertheless, serological tests present problems; the WHO recommends the use of these new point-of-care immunodiagnostic tests only in research settings. Furthermore, nothing has yet been published regarding the possibility of applying these methods during post-mortem investigations. In light of this scenario, in this review, we suggest a flow chart for the pathologist called on to ascertain the cause of death of a subject with historical and clinical findings of COVID-19 status or without any anamnestic, diagnostic, or exposure information. Indeed, the literature data confirmed the analytical vulnerabilities of the kits used for laboratory diagnosis of COVID-19, particularly during postmortem examinations. For these reasons, autopsy remains the gold standard method to ascertain the exact cause of death (from or with COVID-19 infection, or other causes), to consequently provide real data for statistical evaluations and to take necessary measures to contain the risks of the infection. The December 2019 COVID-19 outbreak in China has led to worldwide quarantine, as recommended by local governments and the World Health Organization. Particularly affected are older adults (i.e., those aged ≥ 65 years) who are at elevated risk for various adverse health outcomes, including declines in motor ability and physical activity (PA) participation, increased obesity, impaired cognition, and various psychological disorders. Thus, given the secular increases in the older adult population, novel and effective intervention strategies are necessary to improve physical activity behaviors and health in this population. Virtual reality (VR)-integrated exercise is a promising intervention strategy, which has been utilized in healthcare fields like stroke rehabilitation and psychotherapy. Therefore, the purpose of this editorial is to synthesize recent research examining the efficacy and effectiveness of VR exercise in the promotion of favorable health outcomes among the older adults. Results indicate the application of VR exercise to facilitate improved physical outcomes (e.g., enhanced motor ability, reduced obesity), cognition and psychological outcomes. VR exercise has also been observed to be an effective intervention strategy for fall prevention in this population. Future research should employ more rigorous research designs to allow for a more robust quantitative synthesis of the effect of VR exercise on the preceding outcomes to elucidate which type(s) of VR-based PA interventions are most effective in promoting improved health outcomes among older adults. Findings from this study will better inform the development of technology-savvy PA programs for wellness promotion in older adults who practice social distancing and exercise from home under the unprecedented global health crisis. Since an association between myocardial infarction (MI) and respiratory infections has been described for influenza viruses and other respiratory viral agents, understanding possible physiopathological links between severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and acute coronary syndromes (ACS) is of the greatest importance. The initial data suggest an underestimation of ACS cases all over the world, but acute MI still represents a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and should not be overshadowed during the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic. No common consensus regarding the most adequate healthcare management policy for ACS is currently available. Indeed, important differences have been reported between the measures employed to treat ACS in China during the first disease outbreak and what currently represents clinical practice across Europe and the USA. This review aims to discuss the pathophysiological links between MI, respiratory infections, and Covid-19; epidemiological data related to ACS at the time of the Covid-19 pandemic; and learnings that have emerged so far from several catheterization labs and coronary care units all over the world, in order to shed some light on the current strategies for optimal management of ACS patients with confirmed or suspected SARS-CoV-2 infection. Objectives: A bibliometric approach using network analysis was applied to identify the development and research trends for moxibustion. This study also examined the network hub of moxibustion research by investigating the collaborative work of organizations and authors. Methods: Academic articles on moxibustion research published from 2000 to 2019 were retrieved from the Web of Science database. Extracted records were analyzed according to publication year, research area, journal title, country, organization, and authors. The VOSviewer program was utilized to visualize the trends in moxibustion research and to explore the influential organizations and authors. Results: Analyses of 1146 original and review articles written in English demonstrated that the number of publications related to moxibustion research has increased consistently over the last 20 years. China issued the most articles in this field, and the most represented research area was integrative complementary medicine. A network analysis based on the co-occurrence and publication year of keywords identified the relevant characteristics and trends of moxibustion research. By assessing the total link strength of organizations and authors, influential organizations and authors who have contributed to moxibustion research were identified. Conclusions: The current study examined research on moxibustion using bibliometric analysis and identified a time-based development of moxibustion research and a global network hub of moxibustion research. A pneumonia outbreak with unknown etiology was reported in Wuhan, Hubei province, China, in December 2019, associated with the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market. The causative agent of the outbreak was identified by the WHO as the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), producing the disease named coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). The virus is closely related (96.3%) to bat coronavirus RaTG13, based on phylogenetic analysis. Human-to-human transmission has been confirmed even from asymptomatic carriers. The virus has spread to at least 200 countries, and more than 1,700,000 confirmed cases and 111,600 deaths have been recorded, with massive global increases in the number of cases daily. Therefore, the WHO has declared COVID-19 a pandemic. The disease is characterized by fever, dry cough, and chest pain with pneumonia in severe cases. In the beginning, the world public health authorities tried to eradicate the disease in China through quarantine but are now transitioning to prevention strategies worldwide to delay its spread. To date, there are no available vaccines or specific therapeutic drugs to treat the virus. There are many knowledge gaps about the newly emerged SARS-CoV-2, leading to misinformation. Therefore, in this review, we provide recent information about the COVID-19 pandemic. As the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) continues to spread rapidly across the globe, we aimed to identify and summarize the existing evidence on epidemiological characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 and the effectiveness of control measures to inform policymakers and leaders in formulating management guidelines, and to provide directions for future research. We conducted a systematic review of the published literature and preprints on the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak following predefined eligibility criteria. Of 317 research articles generated from our initial search on PubMed and preprint archives on 21 February 2020, 41 met our inclusion criteria and were included in the review. Current evidence suggests that it takes about 3-7 days for the epidemic to double in size. Of 21 estimates for the basic reproduction number ranging from 1.9 to 6.5, 13 were between 2.0 and 3.0. The incubation period was estimated to be 4-6 days, whereas the serial interval was estimated to be 4-8 days. Though the true case fatality risk is yet unknown, current model-based estimates ranged from 0.3% to 1.4% for outside China. In December 2019, a novel coronavirus, called COVID-19, was discovered in Wuhan, China, and has spread to different cities in China as well as to 24 other countries. The number of confirmed cases is increasing daily and reached 34,598 on 8 February 2020. In the current study, we present a new forecasting model to estimate and forecast the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the upcoming ten days based on the previously confirmed cases recorded in China. The proposed model is an improved adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) using an enhanced flower pollination algorithm (FPA) by using the salp swarm algorithm (SSA). In general, SSA is employed to improve FPA to avoid its drawbacks (i.e., getting trapped at the local optima). The main idea of the proposed model, called FPASSA-ANFIS, is to improve the performance of ANFIS by determining the parameters of ANFIS using FPASSA. The FPASSA-ANFIS model is evaluated using the World Health Organization (WHO) official data of the outbreak of the COVID-19 to forecast the confirmed cases of the upcoming ten days. More so, the FPASSA-ANFIS model is compared to several existing models, and it showed better performance in terms of Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), Root Mean Squared Relative Error (RMSRE), Root Mean Squared Relative Error (RMSRE), coefficient of determination ( R 2 ), and computing time. Furthermore, we tested the proposed model using two different datasets of weekly influenza confirmed cases in two countries, namely the USA and China. The outcomes also showed good performances. The ongoing COVID-19 epidemic continues to spread within and outside of China, despite several social distancing measures implemented by the Chinese government. Limited epidemiological data are available, and recent changes in case definition and reporting further complicate our understanding of the impact of the epidemic, particularly in the epidemic's epicenter. Here we use previously validated phenomenological models to generate short-term forecasts of cumulative reported cases in Guangdong and Zhejiang, China. Using daily reported cumulative case data up until 13 February 2020 from the National Health Commission of China, we report 5- and 10-day ahead forecasts of cumulative case reports. Specifically, we generate forecasts using a generalized logistic growth model, the Richards growth model, and a sub-epidemic wave model, which have each been previously used to forecast outbreaks due to different infectious diseases. Forecasts from each of the models suggest the outbreaks may be nearing extinction in both Guangdong and Zhejiang; however, the sub-epidemic model predictions also include the potential for further sustained transmission, particularly in Zhejiang. Our 10-day forecasts across the three models predict an additional 65–81 cases (upper bounds: 169–507) in Guangdong and an additional 44–354 (upper bounds: 141–875) cases in Zhejiang by February 23, 2020. Background: Depression is commonly treated with anti-depressant medication and/or psychological interventions. Patients with depression are common users of complementary therapies, such as acupuncture, either as a replacement for, or adjunct to, their conventional treatments. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effectiveness of acupuncture in major depressive disorder. Methods: A search of English (Medline, PsychINFO, Google Scholar, and CINAL), Chinese (China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database (CNKI) and Wanfang Database), and Korean databases was undertaken from 1980 to November 2018 for clinical trials using manual, electro, or laser acupuncture. Results: Twenty-nine studies including 2268 participants were eligible and included in the meta-analysis. Twenty-two trials were undertaken in China and seven outside of China. Acupuncture showed clinically significant reductions in the severity of depression compared to usual care (Hedges (g) = 0.41, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.18 to 0.63), sham acupuncture (g = 0.55, 95% CI 0.31 to 0.79), and as an adjunct to anti-depressant medication (g = 0.84, 95% CI 0.61 to 1.07). A significant correlation between an increase in the number of acupuncture treatments delivered and reduction in the severity of depression (p = 0.015) was found. Limitations: The majority of the included trials were at a high risk of bias for performance blinding. The applicability of findings in Chinese populations to other populations is unclear, due to the use of a higher treatment frequency and number of treatments in China. The majority of trials did not report any post-trial follow-up and safety reporting was poor. Conclusions: Acupuncture may be a suitable adjunct to usual care and standard anti-depressant medication. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a child-centered exergaming program and a traditional teacher-led physical activity (PA) program on preschoolers' executive functions and perceived competence. Methods: Sixty children aged 4–5 years from an urban childcare center in China completed an 8-week exergaming/traditional PA intervention. After baseline measurements of executive functions and perceived competence (i.e., perceived physical competence and social acceptance), children were randomly assigned to either an exergaming group or traditional PA group (30 children per group). Exergaming and traditional PA programs were offered 20 min/session by trained instructors for 8 weeks. Post-intervention measures were identical to baseline measures. Results: In general, children's executive functions, perceived physical competence, and perceived social acceptance were enhanced over time. Analysis of variance revealed significant time by group interaction effects for executive functions, F(1, 58) = 12.01, p = 0.01, and perceived social acceptance, F(1, 58) = 6.04, p = 0.02, indicating that the exergaming intervention group displayed significantly greater increases in executive functions and perceived social acceptance in comparison with traditional PA children. In addition, children's executive functions and perceived physical and social competence significantly improved from baseline to post-intervention. However, there was no significant difference in the increase of children's perceived physical competence across groups over time. Conclusion: The results suggested exergaming to be beneficial in enhancing young children's executive functions and perceived social acceptance compared to the traditional PA program.
