•Synthesis of copper oxide anchored to graphene oxide porous microstructures.•A simple and atom-economical DC electrophoresis method was used.•Rationalisation of several physicochemical parameters for better activity.•Excellent activity for CO2reduction into CO with Faradaic efficiency of 40%.•Significantly better performance than few state of the art electro-catalysts.
