Understanding the dynamics of phase change heat and mass transfer in the three-phase contact line region is a critical step toward improving the efficiency of phase change processes. Phase change becomes especially complicated when a fluid mixture is used. In this paper, a wickless heat pipe was operated on the International Space Station (ISS) to study the contact line dynamics of a pentane/isohexane mixture. Different interfacial regions were identified, compared, and studied. Using high resolution (50×), interference images, we calculated the curvature gradient of the liquid-vapor interface at the contact line region along the edges of the heat pipe. We found that the curvature gradient in the evaporation region increases with increasing heat flux magnitude and decreasing pentane concentration. The curvature gradient for the mixture case is larger than for the pure pentane case. The difference between the two cases increases as pentane concentration decreases. Our data showed that the curvature gradient profile within the evaporation section is separated into two regions with the boundary between the two corresponding to the location of a thick, liquid, “central drop” region at the point of maximum internal local heat flux. We found that the curvature gradients at the central drop and on the flat surfaces where condensation begins are one order of magnitude smaller than the gradients in the corner meniscus indicating the driving forces for fluid flow are much larger in the corners.

Image-analyzing interferometry is used to measure the apparent contact angle and the curvature of a drop and a meniscus during condensation and evaporation processes in a constrained vapor bubble (CVB) cell. The apparent contact angle is found to be a function of the interfacial mass flux. The interfacial velocity for the drop during condensation and evaporation is a function of the apparent contact angle and the rate of change of radius of curvature. The dependence of velocity on the apparent contact angle is consistent with Tanner's scaling equation. The results support the hypothesis that evaporation/condensation is an important factor in contact line motion. The main purpose of this article is to present the experimental technique and the data. The equilibrium contact angle for the drop is found experimentally to be higher than that for the corner meniscus. The contact angle is a function of the stress field in the fluid. The equilibrium contact angle is related to the thickness of the thin adsorbed film in the microscopic region and depends on the characteristics of the microscopic region. The excess interfacial free energy and temperature jump were used to calculate the equilibrium thickness of the thin adsorbed film in the microscopic region.

Using an image analyzing interferometer, IAI, the interfacial characteristics of an isothermal constrained vapor bubble, CVB, in a quartz cuvette were studied as a precursor to heat transfer research. The effects of pH and electrolyte concentration on the meniscus properties (curvature and adsorbed film thickness) and the stability of the aqueous wetting films were evaluated. The surface potential in the electric double layer was a function of the cleaning and hydroxylation of the quartz surface. The disjoining pressure isotherm for pure water was very close to that predicted by the Langmuir equation. For aqueous solutions of moderate electrolyte concentration, the Gouy-Chapman theory provided a good representation of the electrostatic effects in the film. The effect of temperature on the film properties of aqueous solutions and pure water was also evaluated: The meniscus curvature decreased with increasing temperature, while Marangoni effects, intermolecular forces, and local evaporation and condensation enhanced waves on the adsorbed film layer. Pure water wetting films were mechanically metastable, breaking into droplets and very thin films (less than 10 nm) after a few hours. Aqueous wetting films with pH 12.4 proved to be stable during a test of several months, even when subjected to temperature and mechanical perturbations. The mechanical stability of wetting films can explain the reported differences between the critical heat fluxes of pure water and aqueous solutions. Numerical solutions of equilibrium and nonequilibrium models based on the augmented Young-Laplace equation were successfully used to evaluate experimental data for an extended meniscus. The data for the equilibrium and nonequilibrium meniscus profiles were obtained optically using ellipsometry and image processing interferometry. A Taylor series expansion of the fourth-order nonlinear transport model was used to obtain the extremely sensitive initial conditions at the interline. The solid-liquid-vapor Hamaker constants for the systems were obtained from the experimental data. The consistency of the data was demonstrated by using the combining rules to calculate the unknown value of the Hamaker constant for the experimental substrate. The sensitivity of the meniscus profile to small changes in the environment was demonstrated. Both temperature and intermolecular forces need to be included in modeling transport processes in the contact line region because the chemical potential is a function of both temperature and pressure.

The importance of evaporation followed by multilayer adsorption in comparison to liquid flow at the leading edge of a volatile spreading film is analyzed. Presuming that both flows are functions of the same chemical potential gradient, a dimensionless group (N) which delineates the relative importance of vapor diffusion flow to viscous flow on the surface is obtained: N = [rho][sub i]D[nu]x/([minus][bar A][pi]). The relative importance of vapor flow increases with the vapor-pressure dependent partial density, [rho][sub i], and diffusivity, D, of the diffusing vapor, the kinematic viscosity of the liquid, [nu], and the distance downstream from the bulk liquid region, x, and decreases with the Hamaker constant, 6[pi][bar A]. Using physical properties the modifiers volatile'' and nonvolatile'' can thereby be put in perspective. Changes in the interfacial force field are a function of [bar A]. The spreading velocity due to the vapor diffusion process is obtained and is found to decrease with a decrease in the interfacial force field and the bulk vapor pressure. The infinite stress at the contact line can be easily relieved by evaporation-adsorption in many systems.

The near-equilibrium thickness profiles of an extended meniscus in the contact line region of a completely wetting film of octane on an inclined, flat plate were measured using an ellipsometer and a microcomputer-enhanced interferometer. The extreme sensitivity of the system to the nonequilibrium effects associated with volatile liquids is demonstrated and evaluated. The inferred equilibrium profile agreed with theoretical predictions of the width of the transition region, the curvature, and the thickness of the adsorbed film. The procedures allow the interfacial properties of the system to be evaluated in situ at the start of dynamic studies and then to be used to describe the transport processes associated with evaporation and condensation. The effect of transport processes on the thickness profile agreed with previous theoretical models. The convenience of microcomputer-enhanced video microscopy naturally leads to a better understanding of the transport processes in the contact line region. The results demonstrate that the near-equilibrium processes of change-of-phase heat transfer and fluid flow in thin films are intrinsically connected because of their common dependence on the intermolecular force field and gravity.

The shape of a horizontal meniscus which is influenced both by capillarity and by an adsorbed thin film is determined. An exact solution is obtained which clearly shows the features of a transition between a curved meniscus and an adsorbed film. The method of matched asymptotic expansions is used to elucidate many of the details of the transition layer, its horizontal thickness, and the question of apparent contact angle.

The Young-Laplace equation of capillarity augmented by the disjoining pressure concept of Deryagin has been used to obtain the interfacial profile in the contact line region of a finite contact angle system. An initial interfacial slope identical to zero and an initial effective thin-film thickness of the order of interatomic spacing lead to a finite apparent contact angle and substantial initial curvature. The results agree with published data on the apparent contact angles of the alkane-PTFE system.

The Young-Laplace equation of capillarity augmented by the disjoining pressure concept of Deryagin is used to obtain the liquid-vapor interfacial profile in the contact line region of a finite contact angle system. The calculated apparent contact angle agreed reasonably well with experimental results for the alkane-PIFE system. This work demonstrates that a modified and simpler version of the model and procedures leads directly to the Young-Dupre equation.
