The South African and Mozambican governments have joined hands to upgrade the port of Maputo and the rail-toll road corridor between Maputo and the mining town of Witbank in South Africa. The $230 million project, which is the first build-operate-transfer highway project in the region, will tap the private sector for 90% of the financing. It will also involve dredging the port and deepening its channels as well as shorten the travel within Mozambique by 22 miles.
