Albert Feng pioneered the study of neuroethology of sound localization in anurans by combining behavioral experiments on phonotaxis with detailed investigations of neural processing of sound direction from the periphery to the central nervous system. The main advantage of these studies is that many species of female frogs readily perform phonotaxis towards loudspeakers emitting the species-specific advertisement call. Behavioral studies using synthetic calls can identify which parameters are important for phonotaxis and also quantify localization accuracy. Feng was the first to investigate binaural processing using single-unit recordings in the first two auditory nuclei in the central auditory pathway and later investigated the directional properties of auditory nerve fibers with free-field stimulation. These studies showed not only that the frog ear is inherently directional by virtue of acoustical coupling or crosstalk between the two eardrums, but also confirmed that there are extratympanic pathways that affect directionality in the low-frequency region of the frog's hearing range. Feng's recordings in the midbrain also showed that directional information is enhanced by cross-midline inhibition. Animal locomotion results from muscle contraction and relaxation cycles that are generated within the central nervous system and then are relayed to the periphery by motoneurons. Thus, motoneuron function is an essential element for understanding control of animal locomotion. This paper presents motoneuron input–output relationships, including impulse adaptation, in the medicinal leech. We found that although frequency-current graphs generated by passing 1-s current pulses in neuron somata were non-linear, peak and steady-state graphs of frequency against membrane potential were linear, with slopes of 5.2 and 2.9 Hz/mV, respectively. Systems analysis of impulse frequency adaptation revealed a static threshold nonlinearity at −43 mV (impulse threshold) and a single time constant ( τ = 88 ms). This simple model accurately predicts motoneuron impulse frequency when tested by intracellular injection of sinusoidal current. We investigated electrical coupling within motoneurons by modeling these as three-compartment structures. This model, combined with the membrane potential–impulse frequency relationship, accurately predicted motoneuron impulse frequency from intracellular records of soma potentials obtained during fictive swimming. A corollary result was that the product of soma-to-neurite and neurite-to-soma coupling coefficients in leech motoneurons is large, 0.85, implying that the soma and neurite are electrically compact. Urethane and MS-222 are agents widely employed for general anesthesia, yet, besides inducing a state of unconsciousness, little is known about their neurophysiological effects. To investigate these effects, we developed an in vivo assay using the electric organ discharge (EOD) of the weakly electric fish Apteronotus leptorhynchus as a proxy for the neural output of the pacemaker nucleus. The oscillatory neural activity of this brainstem nucleus drives the fish's EOD in a one-to-one fashion. Anesthesia induced by urethane or MS-222 resulted in pronounced decreases of the EOD frequency, which lasted for up to 3 h. In addition, each of the two agents caused a manifold increase in the generation of transient modulations of the EOD known as chirps. The reduction in EOD frequency can be explained by the modulatory effect of urethane on neurotransmission, and by the blocking of voltage-gated sodium channels by MS-222, both within the circuitry controlling the neural oscillations of the pacemaker nucleus. The present study demonstrates a marked effect of urethane and MS-222 on neural activity within the central nervous system and on the associated animal's behavior. We investigated the central nervous coordination between singing motor activity and abdominal ventilatory pumping in crickets. Fictive singing, with sensory feedback removed, was elicited by eserine-microinjection into the brain, and the motor activity underlying singing and abdominal ventilation was recorded with extracellular electrodes. During singing, expiratory abdominal muscle activity is tightly phase coupled to the chirping pattern. Occasional temporary desynchronization of the two motor patterns indicate discrete central pattern generator (CPG) networks that can operate independently. Intracellular recordings revealed a sub-threshold depolarization in phase with the ventilatory cycle in a singing-CPG interneuron, and in a ventilation-CPG interneuron an excitatory input in phase with each syllable of the chirps. Inhibitory synaptic inputs coupled to the syllables of the singing motor pattern were present in another ventilatory interneuron, which is not part of the ventilation-CPG. Our recordings suggest that the two centrally generated motor patterns are coordinated by reciprocal feedforward discharges from the singing-CPG to the ventilation-CPG and vice versa. Consequently, expiratory contraction of the abdomen usually occurs in phase with the chirps and ventilation accelerates during singing due to entrainment by the faster chirp cycle. Non-nervous auxiliary structures play a significant role in sensory biology. They filter the stimulus and transform it in a way that fits the animal's needs, thereby contributing to the avoidance of the central nervous system's overload with meaningless stimuli and a corresponding processing task. The present review deals with mechanoreceptors mainly of invertebrates and some remarkable recent findings stressing the role of mechanics as an important source of sensor adaptedness, outstanding performance, and diversity. Instead of organizing the review along the types of stimulus energy (force) taken up by the sensors, processes associated with a few basic and seemingly simple mechanical principles like lever systems, viscoelasticity, resonance, traveling waves, and impedance matching are taken as the guideline. A comprehensive understanding of the brain requires analysis, although from a global perspective, with cellular, and even subcellular, resolution. An important step towards this goal involves the establishment of three-dimensional high-resolution brain maps, incorporating brain-wide information about the cells and their connections, as well as the chemical architecture. The progress made in such anatomical brain mapping in recent years has been paralleled by the development of physiological techniques that enable investigators to generate global neural activity maps, also with cellular resolution, while simultaneously recording the organism's behavioral activity. Combination of the high-resolution anatomical and physiological maps, followed by theoretical systems analysis of the deduced network, will offer unprecedented opportunities for a better understanding of how the brain, as a whole, processes sensory information and generates behavior. The four rhopalia of cubomedusae are integrated parts of the central nervous system carrying their many eyes and thought to be the centres of visual information processing. Rhopalial pacemakers control locomotion through a complex neural signal transmitted to the ring nerve and the signal frequency is modulated by the visual input. Since electrical synapses have never been found in the cubozoan nervous system all signals are thought to be transmitted across chemical synapses, and so far information about the neurotransmitters involved are based on immunocytochemical or behavioural data. Here we present the first direct physiological evidence for the types of neurotransmitters involved in sensory information processing in the rhopalial nervous system. FMRFamide, serotonin and dopamine are shown to have inhibitory effect on the pacemaker frequency. There are some indications that the fast acting acetylcholine and glycine have an initial effect and then rapidly desensitise. In mammals and birds, neuropeptide Y (NPY) and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) are found in brain areas known to be involved in the control of ingestive behavior and act to increase voluntary food intake. In rats, significant evidence suggest a functional and behavioral interaction between NPY and GABA mediated transmission in various brain regions, including the arcuate and paraventricular nuclei of the hypothalamus which can be important in the regulation of feeding behavior. In the present study, the effect of intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration of NPY and GABA receptor antagonists on food intake was examined in neonatal chicks. The ICV injection of NPY strongly stimulated food intake while co-administration of NPY and picrotoxin, a GABA antagonist, (but not CGP54626, a GABA antagonist) weakened food intake induced by NPY. It is now generally accepted that RNA localization in the central nervous system conveys important roles both during development and in the adult brain. Of special interest is protein synthesis located at the synapse, as this potentially confers selective synaptic modification and has been implicated in the establishment of memories. However, the underlying molecular events are largely unknown. In this review, we will first discuss novel findings that highlight the role of RNA localization in neurons. We will focus on the role of RNA localization in neurotrophin signaling, axon outgrowth, dendrite and dendritic spine morphogenesis as well as in synaptic plasticity. Second, we will briefly present recent work on the role of microRNAs in translational control in dendrites and its implications for learning and memory. Finally, we discuss recent approaches to visualize RNAs in living cells and their employment for studying RNA trafficking in neurons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The resting activity was studied in filiform sensilla of the firebug ( Pyrrhocoris apterus). Three functional types (T1, T2 and T3) were detected on the abdomen. A resting discharge of nerve impulses is present in all—always in types T1 and T2 and occasionally in type T3. In T1 the mean rate is 57, in T2 3.3 and in T3 0.5 imp/s. Shortening the hair length had a negligible effect on the resting discharge, which indicates an intrinsic origin. The resting activity is highly temperature dependent. In T1, the activation energy was 56.8, in T2 84 and in T3 61.4 kJ/mol ( Q10: 2.27, 5.6 and 5.5, respectively). Such values are typical for mechano-transduction, suggesting the involvement of the transduction mechanism itself. The destruction of the hair base in T1 caused halving of the original discharge rate and shifted the discharge to a regular interval mode. The activation energy decreased to 38 kJ/mol. The destruction of the hair bases in T2 and T3 completely abolished the discharge. It appears that at least two mechanisms are involved in the generation of the resting activity in T1 units while only one can be assumed in case of T2 and T3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The neurophysiology and antennal lobe projections of olfactory receptor neurons housed within short trichoid sensilla of female Heliothis virescens F. (Noctuidae: Lepidoptera) were investigated using a combination of cut-sensillum recording and cobalt-lysine staining techniques. Behaviorally relevant odorants, including intra- and inter-sexual pheromonal compounds, plant and floral volatiles were selected for testing sensillar responses. A total of 184 sensilla were categorized into 25 possible sensillar types based on odor responses and sensitivity. Sensilla exhibited both narrow (responding to few odors) and broad (responding to many odors) response spectra. Sixty-six percent of the sensilla identified were stimulated by conspecific odors; in particular, major components of the male H. virescens hairpencil pheromone (hexadecanyl acetate and octadecanyl acetate) and a minor component of the female sex pheromone, ( Z)-9-tetradecenal. Following characterization of the responses, olfactory receptor neurons within individual sensilla were stained with cobalt lysine ( N=39) and traced to individual glomeruli in the antennal lobe. Olfactory receptor neurons with specific responses to ( Z)-9-tetradecenal, a female H. virescens sex pheromone component, projected to the female-specific central large female glomerulus (cLFG) and other glomeruli. Terminal arborizations from sensillar types containing olfactory receptor neurons sensitive to male hairpencil components and plant volatiles were also localized to distinct glomerular locations. Although the behavioral repertoire of crustaceans is largely guided by visual information their visual nervous system has been little explored. In search for central mechanisms of visual integration, this study was aimed at identifying and characterizing brain neurons in the crab involved in binocular visual processing. The study was performed in the intact animal, by recording intracellularly the response to visual stimuli of neurons from one of the two optic lobes. Identified neurons re- corded from the medulla (second optic neuropil), which include sustaining neurons, dimming neurons, depolarizing and hyperpolarizing tonic neurons and on-off neurons, all presented exclusively monocular (ipsilateral) responses. In contrast, all wide field movement detector neurons recorded from the lobula (third optic neuropil) responded to moving stimuli presented to the ipsilateral and to the contralateral eye. In these cells, the responses evoked by ipsilateral or contralateral stimulation were almost identical, as revealed by analysing the number and amplitude of the elicited postsynaptic potentials and spikes, and the ability to habituate upon repeated visual stimulation. In most animals locomotion can be started and stopped by specific sensory cues. We are using a simple vertebrate, the hatchling Xenopus tadpole, to study a neuronal pathway that turns off locomotion. In the tadpole, swimming stops when the head contacts solid objects or the water's surface meniscus. The primary sensory neurons are in the trigeminal ganglion and directly excite inhibitory reticulospinal neurons in the hindbrain. These project axons into the spinal cord and release GABA to inhibit spinal neurons and stop swimming. We ask whether there is specificity in the types of spinal neuron inhibited. We used single-neuron recording to determine which classes of spinal neurons receive inhibition when the head skin is pressed. Ventral motoneurons and premotor interneurons involved in generating the swimming rhythm receive reliable GABAergic inhibition. More dorsal inhibitory premotor interneurons are inhibited less reliably and some are excited. Dorsal sensory pathway interneurons that start swimming following a touch to the trunk skin do not appear to receive such inhibition. There is therefore specificity in the formation of descending inhibitory connections so that more ventral neurons producing swimming are most strongly inhibited. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We studied the optical microhabitat use and visual pigment variation among a group of closely related teleosts (surfperch: Embiotocidae) living along the nearshore central California coast. We employed a diver-operated spectroradiometer to record the optical microhabitat use of eight surfperch species in Monterey Bay, and microspectrophotometry to measure visual pigment absorbance for nine surfperch species. Species were dichromatic with mixtures of A1- and A2-based visual pigments exhibiting extensive maximum absorbance (λ max) variation across species: 455–482 nm for SWS cones and 527–546 nm for LWS cones. Interspecific variation in sidewelling irradiance measurements (mean λ Fmax S ) significantly accounted for 63% of the variation in surfperch LWS visual pigments and 83% of the interspecific variation in SWS visual pigments using a phylogenetically-corrected regression technique. Optimality models for maximizing relative photon capture of background radiance demonstrate that the LWS cone λ max values are tuned for maximizing photon capture of the species-specific horizontal visual field, while the SWS cone λ max, are well offset from the dominant background radiance. This study is one of the first to demonstrate species-specific differences in habitat usage at microhabitat scales accounting for differences in photoreceptor peak absorbance among closely related, sympatric species.
