Aim: The current investigation aimed to evaluate the crestal bone loss after placement of bone graft around the oral implant with/without platelet-rich plasma (PRP)., Materials and Methods: Forty patients seeking for crown supported by dental implants to replace at least one lost tooth were included in the present study. The participants were divided into two groups at random ( n = 20): Group I: Received tricalcium phosphate (TCP) along with PRP and group II: Received TCP without PRP. Digital radiographs were used to quantify the crestal bone levels on the mesial, distal, buccal, and lingual side of each implant after surgery, also at 3 months and 6 months follow-up period. Data were recorded and subjected to statistical analysis., Results: After 3 months, the crestal bone level in TCP with PRP group, mesial side was 1.02 ± 0.18, distal was 1.14 ± 0.11, buccal was 1.18 ± 0.12 and lingual was 1.16 ± 0.16. In only TCP group, mesial side was 1.14 ± 0.02, distal was 1.24 ± 0.10, buccal was 1.38 ± 0.12 and lingual was 1.30 ± 0.08. There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups. After 6 months, the crestal bone level in TCP with PRP group, mesial side was 1.26 ± 0.02, distal was 1.38 ± 0.14, buccal was 1.44 ± 0.09, and lingual was 1.52 ± 0.12. In only TCP group, mesial side was 1.40 ± 0.10, distal was 1.56 ± 0.12, buccal was 1.62 ± 0.06, and lingual was 1.84 ± 0.04. There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups at 3 and 6 months., Conclusion: On conclusion, considerable crestal bone loss was observed in both treatment regimens. But TCP bone graft with PRP group found decreased bone loss around the dental implants than only TCP bone graft group., Clinical Significance: The most important aspects of controlling crestal bone loss are choosing the right implant design and bone transplant materials. Also, platelet-rich fibrin plays an important role in accelerating the healing process, improving bone regeneration, and repairing as it contains a high amount of growth factors and inflammatory chemicals. Aim: The current study was carried out to assess the interaction between fibrin clots and dental implants following various surface treatments., Materials and Methods: In this investigation, 45 dental implants with dimensions of 16 mm in length and 5 mm in diameter were utilized. They were divided up into three groups, each consisting of fifteen samples. Group I: Control; Group II: Ultraviolet (UV) light treated; and group III: Sandblasted and acid-etching (SLA) treated. Healthy volunteers' venous blood samples were drawn into vacutainer tubes without the use of anticoagulants. The samples were centrifuged for 3 minutes at 2700 rpm in a table centrifuge. The entire implant was submerged in room-temperature liquid fibrinogen for 60 minutes. Then, scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) was used to examine each sample. The inter- and intragroup assessments were obtained using the Mann-Whitney U test and the Kruskal-Wallis test; p -values less than 0.05 were regarded as statistically significant., Results: The maximum adhesion of fibrin clot was found in SLA treated group (2.42 ± 0.10) followed by the UV light-treated group (2.18 ± 0.08) and control group (1.20 ± 0.02). There was a statistically significant difference found between the three surface-treated groups ( p < 0.001)., Conclusion: All surface-treatment methods exhibit adhesion between the implant surface and the fibrin clot. However, the highest adherence of fibrin clot was found in SLA treated group compared to the UV light-treated and control group., Clinical Significance: The physical and chemical characteristics of an implant's surface have a significant impact on the way blood clots organize. Aim: The purpose of the current study was to evaluate Titanium and Bioneck TRI implant-abutment interfaces for microgaps and microbiological leakage., Materials and Methods: In this in vitro experiment, 40 dental implants were split into two groups, each of which had 20 samples. Group I: Titanium dental implant, group II: Bioneck TRI. E. coli strain was cultivated in MacConkey media for 24 hours at 37°C. To achieve a bacterial concentration of 1 × 10 8 colony-forming units per mL at 0.5 scale of MacFarland, the brain-heart infusion (BHI) broth was injected. The CFU count was done to evaluate the microbial leakage. The parts were first submerged, carefully cleaned in an ultrasonic bath, and then installed using a digital torque meter with a 20 N/cm preload. These were attached to a stub of approximately 13 mm using carbon tape, and the microgap evaluation was performed using a scanning electron microscope at a magnification of x1000. Unpaired t -test was used for the calculated data's statistical analysis. The p -value less than 0.05 was considered as statistically significant., Results: The maximum microbial leakage was in Bioneck TRI implants (10000 ± 0.01) followed by Titanium dental implants (8.60 ± 3.16). The mean difference was 9991.40 and there was a statistically significant difference found between the two different groups. The maximum microgap was found in the Bioneck TRI implants (9.72 ± 0.96), followed by Titanium dental implant (6.82 ± 1.10) and there was a statistically significant difference was found between the groups ( p < 0.001)., Conclusion: The present study concluded that the microorganisms can infiltrate the microgap between the implant and abutment interface. When compared with Titanium dental implants, Bioneck TRI implants showed significantly higher levels of microbial leakage., Clinical Significance: A microgap between the implant and abutment connection might operate as a bacterial source, may produce inflammation, even osseointegration in danger, and subsequently alter clinical and histological parameters. Therefore, having an understanding of the compatible components aids in overcoming treatment planning challenges.

Aim: The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of various root-conditioning agents on root surfaces that are periodontally affected., Materials and Methods: A total of 90 human teeth having single root that were extracted because of chronic periodontitis were chosen. The extracted teeth were cleaned of saliva and blood using a soft-bristled brush and distilled water. The investigational groups were categorized into group I-doxycycline HCl, group II-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, and group III-tetracycline HCl. Samples were readied for histological study by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The SEM was used to assess the effectiveness of smear layer removal, amount of patent dentinal tubules out of the totality of dentinal tubules present, and the appreciation of collagen fiber-like structures inside the intertubular area., Results: The highest efficacy for smear layer removal was seen for group III-tetracycline HCl samples (1.80 ± 0.148) followed next by group II-EDTA (1.36 ± 0.230), and group I-doxycycline HCl (1.30 ± 0.283). The highest number of patent dentinal tubules were seen in group III-tetracycline HCl (44.50 ± 0.18) followed immediately by group II-EDTA (38.10 ± 0.42), and group I-doxycycline HCl (34.90 ± 0.23). The highest number of appreciation of collagen-like structures was recorded in group III-tetracycline HCl (2.64 ± 0.04) followed next by group I-doxycycline HCl (1.88 ± 0.10) and group II-EDTA (1.76 ± 0.28)., Conclusion: The present in vitro study concludes tetracycline HCl root-conditioning agent to be significantly more efficient in smear layer removal, exposing collagen fibers and amount of patent dentinal tubules than doxycycline HCl and EDTA., Clinical Significance: The modification of the root surface of human teeth with the use of root conditioning agents leads to enhanced attachment by connective tissue resulting in improved reconstructive periodontal treatment goals.

Aim: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of various concentrations of Eucalyptus globulus leaf extract on periodontal pathogens., Materials and Methods: Matured, healthy and disease-free leaves of Eucalyptus globulus were collected. The leaves were washed under tap water and finally dried in an oven at a temperature of 45°C for 48 hours. The dried plants were ground in an electric blender to make them into a powder. The powder was mixed with 100% ethanol and kept it inside a shaker overnight at 35°C. The mixture was centrifuged for 10 minutes at 2,500 rpm. Three different concentrations (10%, 50%, and 100% v/v) were used as antibacterial agents. Chlorhexidine (0.2%) was considered as positive control and dimethyl formamide was considered as negative control against P. gingivalis and A. actinomycetemcomitans . The disc diffusion method was used to determine the extract's antibacterial activity against the test organisms. A digital Vernier caliper was used to measure the diameter of antibacterial activity showing the zone of inhibition in millimeters., Results: Eucalyptus globulus with 100% concentration showed a maximum zone of inhibition against A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis (5.38 ± 0.32 mm, 4.82 ± 0.11 mm) followed by 50% and 10% accordingly. The negative control of dimethyl formamide showed a zone of inhibition of 0.48 ± 0.96 mm and 0.63 ± 0.20 mm against A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis . The positive control of 0.2% chlorhexidine showed a zone of inhibition of 8.46 ± 1.02 mm and 7.18 ± 0.54 mm against A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis . The ANOVA test showed a highly significant antibacterial efficacy in 0.2% chlorhexidine and 100% concentration Eucalyptus globulus ., Conclusion: A significant maximum zone of inhibition against A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis was showed by 100% concentration of Eucalyptus globulus ., Clinical Significance: Other than the systemic diseases treatment, Eucalyptus globulus also serves as an effective promising alternative to antibiotics in the prevention of oral infections because of the natural phytochemicals existing in them.

Aim: The present study aims to assess the efficacy of different periodontal dressing materials on wound healing clinically., Materials and Methods: A total of 45 patients between the age group of 30-45 years, with chronic generalized periodontitis with loss of attachment of 3-6 mm, who require periodontal flap surgery, were screened to include in the study. Out of 45 subjects, 24 were males and 21 were females. The subjects were randomized into 3 groups as 15 in each. Group I: a collagen dressing, group II: light-cure dressing, and group III: non-eugenol-based dressing. The clinical parameters such as plaque index, vertical probing depth, pain, gingival index, and patient satisfaction were documented for all the three groups on the 7th and the 14th day. Visual analog scale (VAS) was used to score the pain severity. The SPSS 20 software was used to analyze the data. The significance level was set at 5%., Results: The mean gingival index score reduced from 1.40 ± 0.14 to 1.10 ± 0.30 in group I, from 1.48 ± 0.01 to 1.26 ± 0.22 in group II, and from 1.58 ± 0.16 to 1.33 ± 0.10 in group III. The mean plaque index score reduced from 1.48 ± 0.56 to 1.18 ± 0.40 in group I, from 1.46 ± 0.01 to 1.24 ± 0.48 in group II, and from 1.42 ± 0.12 to 1.20 ± 0.20 in group III. There was a statistical difference found in all the three groups and between the groups from the plaque and gingival index scores. The probing depth comparison shows a significant difference in group I. Patient satisfaction was almost similar in all the groups. The pain index showed the reduction in the pain severity from the 7th day to the 14th day in all the subjects from all the three groups., Conclusion: It can be concluded that the periodontal wound covered with a collagen dressing material showed significant evidence to provide symptomatic relief and better healing to the patients compared to that of light-cure and non-eugenol periodontal dressing material.

Aim: The present study aims to assess the efficacy of non-resorbable and bioabsorbable guided tissue regeneration (GTR) membrane periodontal tissue regenerative methods., Materials and Methods: Thirty teeth taken from 20 patients (8 males and 12 females) within the age range of 20-55 years having chronic periodontitis were enrolled in this trial. All the enrolled patients underwent phase I therapy which included scaling and root planing performed in two sittings by a single practitioner. Patients who fulfilled the selection criteria entered the study and were randomly allocated to the three groups. Group I: control group, group II: patients who received a non-resorbable GTR membrane, and group III: patients who received a bioabsorbable GTR membrane. The clinical parameters that were documented at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months postoperatively were the gingival index, plaque index, and probing depth (vertical and horizontal) for all the three groups., Results: The mean gingival index score was 1.64 ± 0.32 in group III at baseline, which decreased to 1.20 ± 0.10 at 6 months postoperatively. The plaque index reduced from 1.36 ± 0.46 at baseline to 1.04 ± 0.01 at 6 months postoperatively. The vertical and horizontal probing depths demonstrated a statistically significant difference between all the three groups., Conclusion: The present study established that both membranes resulted in clinically and statistically significant improvements in the treatment of grade II furcation defects.

Aim: This study aims to compare the clinical efficacy of three different gingival retraction systems on gingival sulcus width., Materials and Methods: Study was conducted on prepared right or left maxillary central incisor for 45 subjects. Totally, 15 patients were randomly allocated in three gingival displacement groups, i.e., group I (retraction cord impregnated with aluminum chloride), group II (magic foam), and group III (laser). The pre- and postdisplacement impressions were made with addition silicone material using two-stage double mix technique., Results: There was no difference between the groups at baseline. Group III produced more displacement (mean value 0.48 ± 0.101 mm) than group II (mean value 0.31 ± 0.09 mm) and group I (mean value 0.44 ± 0.11 mm), and this was statistically significant., Conclusion: Laser gingival displacement system was found to be effective among the three retraction systems. Choice of gingival displacement system is based on clinical situation and choice of operator., Clinical Significance: The retraction groups in the study created greater amount of gingival retraction than the least sulcus width required for the elastomeric impression material and so are clinically useful.

Aim: The present study was conducted with an aim to assess the antimicrobial activity of Ocimum sanctum (tulsi) extract on Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis. Materials and methods: Tulsi extract with ethanol was prepared using cold extraction method in the present in vitro study. Various concentrations (2, 4, 6, and 8%) were then obtained by dilution with dimethylformamide. A 0.2% chlorhexidine served as the positive control, whereas the negative control was dimeth-ylformamide. Zones of inhibition were measured, each for A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis. For comparison within the group and between the study groups, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post hoc tests were used. A statistical significance level of p < 0.05 was established. Results: The 8% concentration of the tulsi extract showed maximum zone of inhibition against A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis (40.10 ± 0.90, 33.79 ± 1.82 mm), followed by the 6, 4, and 2% concentrations. The 0.2% chlorhexidine, which was the positive control, had 39.80 ± 1.24 and 32.28 ± 1.28 mm zones of inhibition; dimethylformamide showed 13.55 ± 1.92 and 10.21 ± 2.16 mm zones of inhibition against both the microorganisms. The ANOVA showed highly statistically significant (p < 0.0001) results between and within the groups. The antimicrobial activity of tulsi extract at 6 and 8% concentrations, and 0.2% chlorhexidine against A. actinomycetemcomitans showed statistically significant differences between the groups. The concentration of tulsi extract at 8 and 0.2% chlorhexidine on P. gingivalis showed statistically significant differences between the groups. Conclusion: It was concluded that 8% concentration of O. sanctum (tulsi) extract showed the maximum antimicrobial activity against A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis. It is thus recommended that this may be useful as an adjunc-tive to mechanical therapy in the prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases. Clinical significance: O. sanctum (tulsi) is a herb that is abundantly available, easily accessible, economically feasible, and culturally acceptable. Therefore, it is very useful in the management of oral diseases and also for overcoming many barriers that exist for the utilization of dental services, such as affordability, accessibility, availability, and acceptability. Aim: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of different bristle designs of toothbrushes and the periodontal status among patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment., Materials and Methods: This randomized controlled trial (RCT) consisted of 45 adolescents (comprising 20 males and 25 females) undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment. The study participants were randomly allocated to three groups, each group being assigned a locally available toothbrush with a particular design of toothbrush bristle. In the first test phase, group I study participants were allocated to toothbrush with flat bristles, group II study subjects were allocated to toothbrush with zigzag bristles, and group III study participants were allocated to toothbrush with crisscross bristles. The study participants were recalled after 4 weeks to check the effectiveness of the allocated toothbrushes. A washout period of 1 week was maintained to ensure that there was no carryover effect of the different bristle designs. In the second test phase, each patient used the opposite toothbrush bristle design (group I: toothbrush with zigzag bristles, group II: toothbrush with crisscross bristles, and group III: toothbrush with flat bristles). Plaque scores were measured using Turesky-Gilmore-Glickman modification of Quigley-Hein plaque index (PI)., Results: In both phase 1 and 2 of this RCT, toothbrush with crisscross bristles exhibited maximum plaque reduction among the three different bristle design toothbrushes following 30 days (p = 0.312 ± 0.102 and 0.280 ± 0.110, respectively), which was statistically significant., Conclusion: It was concluded that all the three designs of toothbrushes were effective in removing plaque in patients with fixed orthodontic appliances. But among the three different toothbrushes, toothbrush with crisscross bristles showed the highest mean plaque reduction., Clinical Significance: Plaque accumulation around the orthodontic brackets and gingival margins is quite common among the fixed orthodontic patients, who encounter difficulty in maintaining good oral hygiene. Specially designed toothbrushes are very essential for effective plaque removal among the patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment.

Intorduction: Patients usually undergo orthodontic treatment for achieving ideal interocclusal relationship between the dental tissue and bony tissue along with improving the speech, mastication, and facial esthetic appearance. Literature quotes paucity in the studies evaluating the effect of orthodontic treatment on the periodontal health of endodontically treated teeth. Hence, we planned the present study to assess the effect of orthodontic treatment on the periodontal health of endodonti-cally restored tooth., Materials and Methods: The present study included assessment of 80 patients who underwent orthodontic treatment. All the patients were divided broadly into two study groups: groups I and II. Group I included patients with the absence of endodontically treated teeth, while group II included patients which maxillary central incisors were resorted endodontically. Examination of the periodontal health of the patients was done using the community periodontal index of treatment need (CPITN) around the selected teeth. All the values were recorded during the preorthodontic time, postorthodontic time, and after the first 6 months of starting of the orthodontic treatment. All the results were recorded separately and analyzed., Results: In the groups I and II, 28 and 25 patients respectively, had score of 1, while 10 patients in group I and 12 patients in group II had score of 2. Nonsignificant results were obtained while comparing the CPITN score in between the two study groups when measured at the pre-, intra-, and postortho time., Conclusion: In patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, having endodontically resorted teeth, no difference exists in relation to the periodontal health., Clinical Significance: Orthodontic treatment can be safely carried in patients with endodontically restored teeth.

Aim: The present study aimed at evaluating the impact of neem-containing mouthwash on plaque and gingivitis., Materials and Methods: This randomized, double-blinded, crossover clinical trial included 40 participants aged 18 to 35 years with washout period of 1 week between the crossover phases. A total of 20 participants, each randomly allocated into groups I and II, wherein in the first phase, group I was provided with 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate and group II with 2% neem mouthwash. After the scores were recorded, 1-week time period was given to the participants to carry over the effects of the mouthwashes and then the second phase of the test was performed. The participants were instructed to use the other mouthwash through the second test phase., Results: There was a slight reduction of plaque level in the first phase as well as in the second phase. When comparison was made between the groups, no statistically significant difference was seen. Both the groups showed reduction in the gingival index (GI) scores in the first phase, and there was a statistically significant difference in both groups at baseline and after intervention (0.005 and 0.01 respectively). In the second phase, GI scores were reduced in both groups, but there was a statistically significant difference between the groups only at baseline scores (0.01)., Conclusion: In the present study, it has been concluded that neem mouthwash can be used as an alternative to chlorhexidine mouthwash based on the reduced scores in both the groups., Clinical Significance: Using neem mouthwash in maintaining oral hygiene might have a better impact in prevention as well as pervasiveness of oral diseases as it is cost-effective and easily available.

Background: Local delivery of antimicrobial agents provides higher concentration of the drug in the periodontal site for longer periods than systemically delivered methods. In the present study an attempt is made to know the efficacy of controlled local drug delivery of doxycycline as an adjunctive treatment in the management of chronic periodontitis., Materials and Methods: A total of 12 patients, diagnosed as Chronic Periodontitis in the age of 25 to 55 years, were selected of both the sexes in this study. They were divided into Experimental group consisted of 30 sites who received complete scaling and root planing (SRP) followed by placement of Atridox gel and control group consisted of 30 sites who received only SRP. Clinical parameters were recorded at, baseline, days 30, 90 and 180. Parameters were plaque index, gingival index, gingival bleeding index and microbial analysis, probing pocket depth and Clinical attachment level (CAL). The microbiological analysis was done at baseline visit and at 90th day. Probing pocket depth and CAL were recorded only on day 0 and 180th day., Results: In 180 days study, both the groups exhibited a significant improvement in periodontal status. Significant gain in attachment level was observed in both the group. Between both the groups the clinical parameters in the experimental groups exhibited better results as compared to the control group. Both the groups exhibited significant reduction in the number of spirochetes., Conclusion: Combination therapy of SRP and 10% DH gel demonstrated better results at all levels suggesting that this therapy can play a significant role as an adjunct to SRP in the management of chronic periodontitis.
