Ongoing and future redshift surveys have the capability to measure the growth rate of large scale structure at the percent level over a broad range of redshifts, tightly constraining cosmological parameters. Beyond general relativity, however, the growth rate in the linear density perturbation regime can be not only redshift dependent but scale dependent, revealing important clues to modified gravity. We demonstrate that a fully model independent approach of binning the gravitational strength $G_{\rm eff}(k,z)$ matches scalar-tensor results for the growth rate $f\sigma_8(k,z)$ to $0.02\%$-$0.27\%$ rms accuracy. For data of the quality of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) we find the bin values can be constrained to 1.4\%-28\%. We also explore the general scalar-tensor form, constraining the amplitude and past and future scalaron mass/shape parameters. Perhaps most interesting is the strong complementarity of low redshift peculiar velocity data with DESI-like redshift space distortion measurements, enabling improvements up to a factor 6-7 on 2D joint confidence contour areas. Within the effective field theory approach to cosmic acceleration, the background expansion can be specified separately from the gravitational modifications. We explore the impact of modified gravity in a background different from a cosmological constant plus cold dark matter (ΛCDM) on the stability and cosmological observables, including covariance between gravity and expansion parameters. In No Slip Gravity the more general background allows more gravitational freedom, including both positive and negative Planck mass running. We examine the effects on cosmic structure growth, as well as showing that a viable positive integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect crosscorrelation easily arises from this modified gravity theory. Using current data we constrain parameters with a Monte Carlo analysis, finding a bound on the running |αM,max|l 0.03 (95% CL) for the adopted form at all cosmic times. We provide the modified hi_class code publicly on GitHub, now enabling computation and inclusion of the redshift space distortion observable fσ8 as well as the No Slip Gravity modifications.

Considering the dark energy/gravity landscape if next generation surveys of galaxies, cosmic microwave background radiation, and gravitational waves do not find clear modification of gravity, we develop No Run Gravity as a counterexample to the conclusion that this would imply general relativity with an expansion history described by an equation of state $w(z)$. No Run Gravity is a cubic Horndeski theory with a constant Planck mass, no gravitational slip, and no modification of gravitational waves, but a rich phenomenology beyond $w(z)$. We calculate the evolution of gravitational strength, sound speed, and cosmic growth within the theory and project sensitivities for upcoming DESI redshift space distortion data., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Cosmic acceleration may be due to modified gravity, with effective field theory or property functions describing the theory. Connection to cosmological observations through practical parametrization of these functions is difficult and also faces the issue that not all assumed time dependence or parts of parameter space give a stable theory. We investigate the relation between parametrization and stability in Horndeski gravity, showing that the results are highly dependent on the function parametrization. This can cause misinterpretations of cosmological observations, hiding and even ruling out key theoretical signatures. We discuss approaches and constraints that can be placed on the property functions and scalar sound speed to preserve some observational properties, but find that parametrizations closest to the observations, e.g. in terms of the gravitational strengths, offer more robust physical interpretations. In addition we present an example of how future observations of the B-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background from primordial gravitational waves can probe different aspects of gravity., 11 pages, 11 figures

Cosmic spatial curvature is a fundamental geometric quantity of the Universe. We investigate a model independent, geometric approach to measure spatial curvature directly from observations, without any derivatives of data. This employs strong lensing time delays and supernova distance measurements to measure the curvature itself, rather than just testing consistency with flatness. We define two curvature estimators, with differing error propagation characteristics, that can crosscheck each other, and also show how they can be used to map the curvature in redshift slices, to test constancy of curvature as required by the Robertson-Walker metric. Simulating realizations of redshift distributions and distance measurements of lenses and sources, we estimate uncertainties on the curvature enabled by next generation measurements. The results indicate that the model independent methods, using only geometry without assuming forms for the energy density constituents, can determine the curvature at the $\sim6\times10^{-3}$ level., 10 pages, 10 figures

A subclass of the Horndeski modified gravity theory we call No Slip Gravity has particularly interesting properties: 1) a speed of gravitational wave propagation equal to the speed of light, 2) equality between the effective gravitational coupling strengths to matter and light, $G_{\rm matter}$ and $G_{\rm light}$, hence no slip between the metric potentials, yet difference from Newton's constant, and 3) suppressed growth to give better agreement with galaxy clustering observations. We explore the characteristics and implications of this theory, and project observational constraints. Adding to our previous method for dealing with gravitational modifications at redshift $z\gtrsim3$ through a single parameter, we investigate treatment of lower redshift modifications to linear growth observables. We establish subpercent accurate fits to the redshift space distortion observable $f\sigma_8(a)$ using two parameters binned in redshift, testing the results for modifications with time dependence that rises, falls, is nonmonotonic, is multipeaked, and corresponds to $f(R)$ and braneworld gravity. The residuals are then propagated to cosmological parameter biases for DESI observations, and found to cause a shift in the dark energy joint confidence contour by less than the equivalent of $\sim0.1\sigma$. Cosmic growth of large scale structure probes the entire history of cosmic expansion and gravitational coupling. To get a clear picture of the effects of modification of gravity we consider a deviation in the coupling strength (effective Newton's constant) at different redshifts, with different durations and amplitudes. We derive, analytically and numerically, the impact on the growth rate and growth amplitude. Galaxy redshift surveys can measure a product of these through redshift space distortions and we connect the modified gravity to the observable in a way that may provide a useful parametrization of the ability of future surveys to test gravity. In particular, modifications during the matter dominated era can be treated by a single parameter, the "area" of the modification, to an accuracy of $\sim0.3\%$ in the observables. We project constraints on both early and late time gravity for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument and discuss what is needed for tightening tests of gravity to better than 5% uncertainty., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures

The effective field theory of cosmic acceleration systematizes possible contributions to the action, accounting for both dark energy and modifications of gravity. Rather than making model dependent assumptions, it includes all terms, subject to the required symmetries, with four (seven) functions of time for the coefficients. These correspond respectively to the Horndeski and general beyond Horndeski class of theories. We address the question of whether this general systematization is actually effective, i.e. useful in revealing the nature of cosmic acceleration when compared with cosmological data. The answer is no and yes: {\it there is no simple time dependence of the free functions} -- assumed forms in the literature are poor fits, but one can derive some general characteristics in early and late time limits. For example, we prove that the gravitational slip must restore to general relativity in the de Sitter limit of Horndeski theories, and why it doesn't more generally. We also clarify the relation between the tensor and scalar sectors, and its important relation to observations; in a real sense the expansion history $H(z)$ or dark energy equation of state $w(z)$ is $1/5$ or less of the functional information! Redshift space distortions in galaxy clustering offer a promising technique for probing the growth rate of structure and testing dark energy properties and gravity. We consider the issue of to what accuracy they need to be modeled in order not to unduly bias cosmological conclusions. Fitting for nonlinear and redshift space corrections to the linear theory real space density power spectrum in bins in wavemode, we analyze both the effect of marginalizing over these corrections and of the bias due to not correcting them fully. While naively subpercent accuracy is required to avoid bias in the fixed case, in the fitting approach the Kwan-Lewis-Linder reconstruction function for redshift space distortions is found to be accurately selfcalibrated with little degradation in dark energy and gravity parameter estimation for a next generation galaxy redshift survey such as BigBOSS., 10 pages, 6 figures

We analyze the science reach of a next generation galaxy redshift survey such as BigBOSS to fit simultaneously for time varying dark energy equation of state and time- and scale-dependent gravity. The simultaneous fit avoids potential bias from assuming $\Lambda$CDM expansion or general relativity and leads to only modest degradation in constraints. Galaxy bias, fit freely in redshift bins, is self calibrated by spectroscopic measurements of redshift space distortions and causes little impact. The combination of galaxy redshift, cosmic microwave background, and supernova distance data can deliver 5-10% constraints on 6 model independent modified gravity quantities., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Weak gravitational lensing is one of the key probes of the cosmological model, dark energy, and dark matter, providing insight into both the cosmic expansion history and large scale structure growth history. Taking into account a broad spectrum of physics affecting growth - dynamical dark energy, extended gravity, neutrino masses, and spatial curvature - we analyze the cosmological constraints. Similarly we consider the effects of a range of systematic uncertainties, in shear measurement, photometric redshifts, and the nonlinear power spectrum, on cosmological parameter extraction. We also investigate, and provide fitting formulas for, the influence of survey parameters such as redshift depth, galaxy number densities, and sky area. Finally, we examine the robustness of results for different fiducial cosmologies.

We investigate circumstances under which one can generalize Horndeski's most general scalar-tensor theory of gravity. Specifically we demonstrate that a nonlinear combination of purely kinetic gravity terms can give rise to an accelerating universe without the addition of extra propagating degrees of freedom on cosmological backgrounds, and exhibit self tuning to bring a large cosmological constant under control. This nonlinear approach leads to new properties that may be instructive for exploring the behaviors of gravity., 16 pages, 7 figures

Galileon gravity is a robust theoretical alternative to general relativity with a cosmological constant for explaining cosmic acceleration, with interesting properties such as having second order field equations and a shift symmetry. While either its predictions for the cosmic expansion or growth histories can approach standard ΛCDM, we demonstrate the incompatibility of both doing so simultaneously. Already current observational constraints can severely disfavor an entire class of Galileon gravity models that do not couple directly to matter, ruling them out as an alternative to ΛCDM.

Galileon gravity offers a robust gravitational theory for explaining cosmic acceleration, having a rich phenomenology of testable behaviors. We explore three classes of Galileon models -- standard uncoupled, and linearly or derivatively coupled to matter -- investigating the expansion history with particular attention to early time and late time attractors, as well as the linear perturbations. From the relativistic and nonrelativistic Poisson equations we calculate the generalizations of the gravitational strength (Newton's constant), deriving its early and late time behavior. By scanning through the parameters we derive distributions of the gravitational strength at various epochs and trace the paths of gravity in its evolution. Using ghost-free and stability criteria we restrict the allowed parameter space, finding in particular that the linear and derivative coupled models are severely constrained by classical instabilities in the early universe., References added, minor modifications to the text (results unchanged). Scalar field dark energy evolving from a long radiation- or matter-dominated epoch has characteristic dynamics. While slow-roll approximations are invalid, a well defined field expansion captures the key aspects of the dark energy evolution during much of the matter-dominated epoch. Since this behavior is determined, it is not faithfully represented if priors for dynamical quantities are chosen at random. The presence of dark energy at high redshift influences both the cosmic sound horizon and the distance to last scattering of the cosmic microwave background. We demonstrate that through the degeneracy in their ratio, early dark energy can lie hidden in the CMB temperature and polarization spectra, leading to an unrecognized shift in the sound horizon. If the sound horizon is then used as a standard ruler, as in baryon acoustic oscillations, then the derived cosmological parameters can be nontrivially biased. Fitting for the absolute ruler scale (just as supernovae must be fit for the absolute candle magnitude) removes the bias but decreases the leverage of the BAO technique by a factor 2., 6 pages, 3 figures

X-ray cluster measurements interpreted with a universal baryon/gas mass fraction can theoretically serve as a cosmological distance probe. We examine issues of cosmological sensitivity for current (e.g. Chandra X-ray Observatory, XMM-Newton) and next generation (e.g. Con-X, XEUS) observations, along with systematic uncertainties and biases. To give competitive next generation constraints on dark energy, we find that systematics will need to be controlled to better than 1% and any evolution in f_gas (and other cluster gas properties) must be calibrated so the residual uncertainty is weaker than (1+z)^{0.03}., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures; v2: 13 pages, substantial elaboration and reordering, matches JCAP version

It may be difficult to single out the best model of dark energy on the basis of the existing and planned cosmological observations, because many different models can lead to similar observational consequences. However, each particular model can be studied and either found consistent with observations or ruled out. In this paper, we concentrate on the possibility to test and rule out the simplest and by far the most popular of the models of dark energy, the theory described by general relativity with positive vacuum energy (the cosmological constant).
