Control of fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) since its invasion of Africa still depends on pesticides. Early detection of adults is considered the key to the success of larvae control in the crop field. However, FAW control thresholds based on current monitoring techniques are not well established in Africa. We investigated the efficacy of moth capture frequencies and FAW incidence levels as decision tools for FAW management. Experiments were conducted over two maize cropping seasons during which FAW incidence, severity, and larvae count were recorded during destructive sampling after the application of a homologated insecticide. During the first season, the FAW incidence ranged from 37.5 ± 5.6% in the 25% incidence threshold treatment to 48.1 ± 8.1% in the control. During the second season, the incidence was significantly lower in the 25% incidence threshold treatment (55.8 ± 5.7%) compared with the control (75.7 ± 3.0%). Over the two seasons, no significant difference in FAW damage severity was recorded between the treatments and control. The highest number of larvae per plant (4.0 ± 0.6) was observed in the 10% incidence threshold treatment. Insecticide application did not consistently contribute to reducing FAW incidence and observed plant damage did not translate into yield loss. FAW control needs further investigation to establish a threshold above which damage translates into yield loss, thus necessitating control intervention.

The arthropod intestinal tract and other anatomical parts naturally carry microorganisms. Some of which are pathogens, secrete toxins, or carry transferable antibiotic-resistance genes. The risks associated with the production and consumption of edible arthropods are dependent on indigenous microbes, as well as microbes introduced during the processes of rearing. This mass arthropod production puts individual arthropods in close proximity, which increases the possibility of their exposure to antibiotic-resistant bacteria carried by bacteria from fellow insects, industry workers, or rearing hardware and substrates. The purpose of this study was to determine if the alimentary tract of the yellow mealworm provided an environment permitting horizontal gene transfer between bacteria. The effect of the concentration of bacterial exposure was also assessed. Antibiotic resistance gene transfer between marker Salmonella Lignières (Enterobacterales: Enterobacteriaceae) and Escherichia coli (Migula) (Enterobacterales: Enterobacteriaceae) introduced into the larval gut demonstrated that the nutrient-rich environment of the yellow mealworm gut provided favorable conditions for the transfer of antibiotic resistance genes. Conjugation frequencies were similar across inoculum concentrations; however, transconjugant production correlated positively to increased exposure concentration. The lowest concentration of bacterial exposure required enrichment to detect and thus may have been approaching a threshold level for the 2 bacteria to colocate within the expanse of the larval gut. While many factors can affect this transfer, the simple factor of the proximity of donor and recipient bacteria, as defined by the concentration of bacteria within the volume of the insect gut, likely primarily contributed to the efficiency of antibiotic gene transfer., (Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of Entomological Society of America 2024.)

Artificial diets for silkworms overcome the seasonal limitations of traditional rearing methods with fresh mulberry leaves. However, the current wet artificial diets, steamed at high temperatures, are not favored by silkworms, and they are cumbersome and challenging to preserve. These conditions adversely affected the development of artificial diet-based sericulture production. In this study, we disinfected dry powder diets with radiation and added distilled water without steaming before use. Then, the nutritional value of finished diets and their impact on silkworm development was assessed. Compared with steamed diets, nonsteamed diets were more attractive to silkworms. Chemical assays showed significantly more essential nutrients for silkworms, including l-ascorbic acid, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, and urease in nonsteamed diets than in steamed diets. Feeding fifth-instar silkworm larvae with nonsteamed diets significantly improved the ammonia utilization efficiency of the diet and increased the cocoon shell rate and diet/silk protein conversion efficiency by 5.9% and 13.3%, respectively. When fed with nonsteamed diets, the abundance of aerobic microorganisms in silkworm intestines increased and the abundance of pathogenic bacteria decreased. Furthermore, the vitality of the silkworm, measured by the dead worm cocoon rate, significantly improved by 16.90%. Seedcorn maggot, Delia platura (Meigen) (Diptera: Anthomyiidae), is an economically important early-season pest of corn and soybean in the United States. Adult seedcorn maggot is attracted to decomposing plant residues for oviposition, creating potential management issues where growers typically use tillage to incorporate fertility amendments and to create a seedbed. The use of growing degree-day models to time planting dates is an important tool for effectively managing this pest, but their use has not been examined in organic crop production. Here, we report the results of experiments to determine the effects of cover crops, tillage, and relative planting date on seedcorn maggot in corn and soybean in 2 experiments: The first during the transition to organic from conventional management and the second during the 3 yr following organic certification in central Pennsylvania, United States. Overall, delaying the planting date by 1-2 wk reduced fly emergence in corn, but not in soybean in both experiments. Seedcorn maggot emergence was also consistently greater in corn than in soybean, with 6 times more flies in corn than in soy. About 15 times more seedcorn maggot flies emerged from corn in treatments in which cover crops were managed with tillage compared to treatments in which cover crops were terminated with a roller-crimper followed by no-till planting of corn. Fly emergence was negatively related to the proportion of legumes in the cover crop mixture preceding corn. The spotted-wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae), threatens both the soft-skinned and stone fruit industry in Asia, Europe, and America. Integrated pest management requires monitoring for infestation rates in real time. Although baited traps for adult D. suzukii are widely used for field monitoring, trap captures are weakly correlated to larval infestation rates. Thus, monitoring for larvae instead of adult flies represents the most reliable monitoring technique. Current methods for larval monitoring (e.g., sugar or salt floatation) are time-consuming and labor-intensive. In this study, we develop a new "sleeve method" for detecting larvae in strawberries through the inspection of individual fruits crushed within transparent plastic sleeves. Samples can be optionally frozen until further processing. Based on count data from non-expert observers, the estimation of larval infestation with the sleeve method is fast, precise, and highly repeatable within and among observers. Mean processing time is half the time compared to previous methods (33-80 s per sample depending on infestation levels). As the accuracy of the sleeve method decreases with infestation levels, we suggest ways to improve its accuracy by incubating fruits for 48 h and calibrating data using fruits with a known number of larvae. The method could also be used in other fruits, as it is easier to use, faster, and requires less equipment than previous monitoring methods. Cabbage maggot (CM) (Delia radicum L.) is a devastating pest of Brassicaceae crops throughout the world, including the Willamette Valley in western Oregon, USA. Chemical control methods for this pest are limited, with reduction or elimination of chlorpyrifos tolerances and expensive alternative chemistries; therefore, there is an increasing need for novel chemical control options. Adult feeding, a strategy used with insecticide-treated baits for other fly species, has yet to be tested as an option for a chemical control delivery for cabbage maggot. Treated bait can exploit the feeding behavior of CM and expose them to insecticides in a field setting. In this study, the efficacy of 5 organic and 5 conventional insecticides was compared in laboratory bioassays of treated bait stations in Aurora, Oregon, USA. The mortality of adult female cabbage maggot flies was assessed over time following ingestion of insecticides. Among organic insecticides tested, spinosad was highly effective 4 h after exposure, while pyrethrins + azadirachtin was moderately effective following 18 h after exposure. Flies exposed to conventional-use pesticides zeta-cypermethrin and bifenthrin had high mortality 1.75 h after exposure, while spinetoram had moderate efficacy 2 h after exposure. Insecticides identified with high or moderate efficacy may have the potential for use in baits or lure formulations that could be used to augment the control of cabbage maggots in field settings., (© The Author(s) 2024. A series of experiments were carried out to develop a phytosanitary disinfestation protocol to kill Ceratitis capitata (Weidemann) (Mediterranean fruit fly, Diptera: Tephritidae) in 'Hayward' kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa (A. Chev.) C.F. Liang and A.R. Ferguson) and 'Zesy002' kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis Planch.). Experiments on 4 immature life stages (eggs and 3 larval instars) with treatment durations of between 5 and 18 days showed that third instars were the most tolerant to temperatures around 3 °C, with the lethal time to 99.9968% (probit 9) mortality (LT99.9968) estimated to be 17.3 days (95% confidence interval (CI) 16.4-18.2). Larvae reared and treated in 'Zesy002' were significantly more susceptible to cold treatment than those reared in 'Hayward'. A large-scale trial testing a disinfestation protocol of 3 ± 0.5 °C for 18 days treated over 500,000 third-instar C. capitata with no survivors. These results demonstrate that a cold treatment of 3.5 °C or below for 18 days induces C. capitata mortality in kiwifruit at a rate that exceeds 99.9968% with a degree of confidence greater than 99%., (© The Author(s) 2024. Allium leafminer (Phytomyza gymnostoma Loew) is a recent invasive pest in the United States causing serious economic loss in organic allium crops. Organic management of P. gymnostoma is currently limited to foliar applications of spinosad, but this strategy is not always sufficient under high infestations. Nonchemical management tools used either alone or in combination with spinosad are needed to improve P. gymnostoma management. Reflective mulch alone or combined with spinosad as well as insect exclusion coverings were evaluated for managing P. gymnostoma in allium crops in New York from 2018 to 2021. Reflective mulch alone reduced the numbers of oviposition marks by 16% and densities of larvae plus pupae by 40% compared with those in standard plastic mulch. Reflective mulch combined with 1 spinosad application reduced P. gymnostoma densities to levels lower than those in reflective mulch alone, but 2 spinosad applications were required to provide an acceptable control level. Combining with reflective mulch, row covers, and insect netting reduced P. gymnostoma densities by 76% compared with those without physical barriers, and the level of control was comparable to that provided by 2 spinosad applications. Phytomyza gymnostoma densities in allium crops grown under row covers deployed throughout the entire period when flies were active tended to be lower than those protected during shorter periods (80% reduction). Future management of P. gymnostoma in allium crops should consider either combining reflective mulch with 2 foliar spinosad applications or deploying insect exclusion coverings. The lethal heat treatment dose (time and temperature) for the prepupal life stage of Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), emerald ash borer (EAB), was determined through an in vitro application using a carefully calibrated heat treatment apparatus. The lethal and sublethal effects of heat on A. planipennis prepupae were assessed through a ramped heat delivery application, simulating industrial kilns and conventional heat chamber operations, for treatments combining target temperatures of 54 °C, 55 °C, and 56 °C, and exposure durations of 0 min (i.e., kiln temperature ramp only), 15 min, or 30 min. Prepupal EAB larvae did not survive exposure to 56 °C for 15 min or longer, or to 55 °C for 30 min. Sublethal effects were observed for all other treatments. The introduction of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), into Thailand has significantly altered the dynamics of maize pests. It has overshadowed Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenée) (Asian corn borer) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), previously the most severe maize insect in Thailand. This transition is postulated to stem from the superior intraguild predation (IGP) capabilities of S. frugiperda. To validate this supposition, we assessed the co-distribution patterns and damage locales of both pests within maize fields and analyzed the IGP's repercussions on their larval growth, survival, and fecundity. Our findings demonstrate that: (i) incidence of O. furnacalis in maize fields is markedly reduced following the introduction of S. frugiperda; (ii) abundance of S. frugiperda and O. furnacalis is negatively correlated in field; (iii) interspecific interactions affect the spatial distributions of S. frugiperda and O. furnacalis on shared plants; (iv) S. frugiperda has lower generation time and higher fecundity; and (v) IGP amplifies the growth rate of S. frugiperda and elevates mortality in O. furnacalis. Moreover, in response to the competitive pressure exerted by S. frugiperda, O. furnacalis exhibited expedited molting and growth without a commensurate increase in size. Our data suggest IGP proficiency underpins S. frugiperda's dominance in Thai maize fields. We propose a niche differentiation on spatiotemporal distribution facilitating the coexistence of S. frugiperda and O. furnacalis. Body size influences performance in many bee species and may be influenced by nesting cavity diameter in cavity-nesting bees. Megachile rotundata (Fabricius) (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae) is a commercially-managed, solitary cavity-nesting bee. In M. rotundata body size has low heritability and is strongly influenced by the size of the larval provision and the diameter of the nesting cavity. Commercial nesting boxes have cavities that are 7 mm in diameter. Our goal was to examine the effects that nesting cavity diameter has on M. rotundata body size and performance by manipulating the size of cavities that are available for nesting. We provided bees with nesting cavities that ranged in size from 4 to 9 millimeters in 1 mm increments. To assess body size we measured mass and intertegular span. To assess performance we measured wing area, wing loading, sex, overwintering survival, pollen ball occurrence, and diapause status in the offspring. We also examined the reproductive output from the different nest cavity diameters. We found that the 8 mm cavities reared bees with the largest mass, and 4 mm cavities reared bees with the smallest mass. We determined that the 7 mm nesting cavity is optimal for offspring yield, the 8 mm nesting cavity is optimal for performance, and the 5 mm nesting cavity may be optimal for conservation efforts of other cavity-nesting bees. The northern corn rootworm, Diabrotica barberi Smith & Lawrence (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a major pest of maize in the United States Corn Belt. Recently, resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) maize was reported in North Dakota and increased use of Bt maize hybrids could facilitate resistance evolution in other maize-producing states. In this study, susceptibility to Bt proteins was evaluated in wild D. barberi populations from 8 fields collected in 5 different states (Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa, and North Dakota). Field populations were compared to a susceptible D. barberi colony in seedling and diet toxicity assays conducted with 3 concentrations of Cry3Bb1 (0.4, 4.0, and 40.0 µg/cm2) and Gpp34/Tpp35Ab1 (previously called Cry34/35Ab1; 1.4, 14.0, and 140.0 µg/cm2). The 2019 population from Meeker Co., Minnesota (MN-2019), exhibited the lowest mortality to Cry3Bb1 and also had nominally lowest mortality to Gpp34/Tpp35Ab1 at the highest concentrations tested in diet toxicity assays. Percent second instar was also highest for larvae of the Minnesota population surviving Cry3Bb1. In seedling assays, MN and IA-2018 populations exhibited the highest proportion survival and dry weight to both proteins expressed in corn. No significant differences in mortality, percent second instar, and dry weight were observed at the highest concentration for both proteins among the populations collected in in 2020. Most D. barberi populations were still highly susceptible to Cry3Bb1 and Gpp34/Tpp35Ab1 proteins based on diet and seedling assays, but resistance appears to be developing in some D. barberi populations. Rising feed cost challenges due to expensive conventional protein sources continue to make headlines in Africa causing drops in profit margins. We assessed the impact of insect (Hermetia illucens Linnaeus larvae meal, HILM) protein as a substitute for soybean meal and sunflower seed cake on layer chicken performance and profitability. Our results showed that apart from the growers, chicks (12.37 g/bird) and layer hens (2.02 g/bird) fed diets with 75% HILM inclusion levels had significantly higher average daily weight gain. The average daily feed intake (ADFI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) varied significantly when the chicks and layer hens were provided with the HILM-based diets. For the chicks and layer hens, the lowest ADFI and FCR were observed in birds subjected to diets with 75% and 100% HILM compared to the growers fed diets with 50% HILM. Significantly higher egg production was observed for layer hens fed diets containing 75% of HILM throughout the first (87.41%) and second (83.05%) phase production cycles. Layer hens fed HILM-based diets had a 3-10% increase in egg laying percentage. There was higher profit margins when birds were fed diets containing 75% of HILM (~1.83 and 5.98 US$ per bird), which mirrored the return on investment estimated at 63.95% and 33.36% for the pullets (growers) and laying hen, respectively. Perina nuda (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) is a serious pest of banyan trees (Ficus spp.), which is distributed in South China, but little is known about the host preference on the different banyan tree species. To address this gap, we conducted experiments to investigate larval feeding preferences, assessing the impact of feeding experience in both choice and no-choice conditions. Fifth and sixth instars were exposed to 4 banyan species, and food intake, feeding area, and relative ingestion index were measured. Our findings reveal that Ficus concinna was the preferred host of fifth instars in choice tests, while sixth instars exhibited a preference for this host in no-choice tests. In contrast, fifth instars did not display a significant preference for any of the 4 species in no-choice tests. However, sixth instars fed on F. microcarpa, F. altissima, and F. concinna continued to exhibit a preference for the original host. These observations indicate that larval feeding preference changes with instar, and feeding experience contributes to a preference for the original host. Consequently, the feeding preference of P. nuda larvae is influenced by multiple factors, including instar and previous feeding experience. Wireworms are primary pests of potatoes in Canada with relatively few effective control options. Recently, a new meta-diamide insecticide, broflanilide, was registered in Canada and the United States as an in-furrow spray applied at planting that provides protection of tubers from feeding damage and dramatically reduces wireworm populations. As part of our routine screening of wireworm response to novel insecticides, we exposed wireworms (predominantly Agriotes obscurus; N=2320) to field soil collected from plots to which either bifenthrin (Capture 2EC) or broflanilide (Cimegra) had been applied at registered rates 124-145 and 314-335 days previously in 2018, 2019, and 2021. Wireworm behavioral responses were assessed using a previously developed numerical scale, and indicated residues were present in sufficient quantity in all broflanilide and most bifenthrin-treated plots to induce morbidity. Transfer of affected wireworms to untreated soil indicated morbidity was generally reversible after exposure to bifenthrin, but not after exposure to broflanilide. There was an inverse relation between wireworm size and the degree of morbidity induced by exposure to broflanilide, but not bifenthrin. Analyses of soil residues indicated readily quantifiable levels of broflanilide still present in undisturbed (not harvested) field soil 314-335 days after application. Insecticide residues in soil samples from disturbed (harvested) sections of the potato plots were lower, as was the degree of morbidity of wireworms exposed to this soil. Western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera (LeConte) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is the most serious economic pest of maize, Zea mays (L.) (Poales: Poaceae), in the U.S. Corn Belt and also threatens production in Europe. Traditional management options have repeatedly failed over time as western corn rootworm rapidly develops resistance to insecticides, transgenic maize and even crop rotation. Traits that improve host plant resistance and tolerance are highly sought after by plant breeders for crop protection and pest management. However, maize resistance to western corn rootworm appears to be highly complex and despite over 75 yr of breeding efforts, there are no naturally resistant hybrids available commercially. Using phenotypic data from field and greenhouse experiments on a highly diverse collection of 282 inbred lines, we screened and genetically mapped western corn rootworm-related traits to identify genetic loci which may be useful for future breeding or genetic engineering efforts. Our results confirmed that western corn rootworm resistance is complex with relatively low heritability due in part to strong genotype by environment impacts and the inherent difficulties of phenotyping below ground root traits. The results of the Genome Wide Associated Study identified 29 loci that are potentially associated with resistance to western corn rootworm. Of these loci, 16 overlap with those found in previous transcription or mapping studies indicating a higher likelihood they are truly involved in maize western corn rootworm resistance. Soybean gall midge, Resseliella maxima Gagné, was recently identified as a new species causing significant injury to soybean and is currently found in 164 counties across 7 midwestern states (NE, IA, SD, MN, MO, ND, and KS). Infestation of soybean begins in late spring, when adults emerge from last year's soybean field. Infestation of a new soybean crop depends on the presence of fissures which start to form at the base of the soybean plant around the V2 stage. Field observations indicate that these fissures are only present below the cotyledonary nodes or in the area within 3-5 cm above the soil surface. To determine the importance of these fissures for R. maxima infestation and plant injury, hilling or the movement of the soil to cover the base of soybean plants at the V2-V3 stage was compared with the standard practice (no-hilling). Field studies were conducted at 3 sites in east-central Nebraska during the 2021 growing season. The results showed a significant reduction in the frequency of infested plants, larval number per plant, and plant injury for hilled compared to no-hill treatment. This reduction in the presence of larvae and plant injury corresponded with a significantly greater yield for hilled compared to the no-hill treatment. These results highlight the importance of fissures on soybean for R. maxima adult infestation as well as the potential for hilling to be used as a management strategy for R. maxima., (© The Author(s) 2023. Annual indoxacarb resistance in Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) populations collected from various crops in Australia was monitored between 2013 and 2023. Resistance frequency determined by F2 screening using a predetermined discriminating dose of indoxacarb, was lowest in the 2013-2014 and 2015-2016 seasons at 0.0164 and 0.0246, respectively. Resistance then increased significantly to a ten-year high of 0.0869 in 2018-2019 but declined to 0.0557 in 2019-2020 during a severe drought, remaining relatively stable thereafter to 2023. Indoxacarb resistance was first detected in H. armigera collected from maize in the Gwydir valley, New South Wales, in 2013 (strain GY7-39). In 2017, a second indoxacarb resistant H. armigera strain (UN1U3-10) was isolated from a population collected in chickpeas in the Liverpool Plains, New South Wales. Indoxacarb resistance of this strain was characterized to evaluate its potential to compromise the ongoing effectiveness of insecticide resistance management strategies in Australian farming systems. Survival at the discriminating dose of indoxacarb in UN1U3-10 was 28.9, 52.6, 86.7, and 92.9% in the F2, F3, F4, and F5, respectively. Following introgression with a susceptible strain and reselection with the discriminating dose of indoxacarb, the resistance ratio of UN1U3-10 was approximately 800-fold. Resistance was autosomal, incompletely dominant and conferred by more than 1 locus. While indoxacarb resistance in UN1U3-10 did not confer to emamectin benzoate or spinetoram and there was no evidence of major cross-resistance to the Bt toxins Cry1A, Cry2A or Vip3A, there was 5-fold reduced sensitivity to chlorantraniliprole. Indoxacarb resistance was suppressed by approximately 10-fold by PBO with no synergism by TPP or DEM, suggesting the involvement of cytochrome P450 enzymes. A stability analysis indicated a fitness cost may be associated with the genes that confer resistance in the UN1U3-10 strain. The "insects as food and feed" movement is gaining considerable momentum as a novel means to provide protein to people (i.e., food) and other animals (i.e., feed). Insects require significantly fewer resources, such as water and land, to produce, process, and distribute as a food or feed source. While the production of insect biomass has received considerable attention for use as food or feed, little is known about the value of the residual materials remaining after digestion. One insect, the black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens (L.) (Diptera: Stratiomyidae), can generate large quantities of residual (i.e., frass) that is high in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. These materials could serve as a partial replacement for fertilizer or peat, thus creating added value to the insects as food and feed sector. Greenhouse studies were designed to investigate the use of frass in vegetable production. In pot studies with tomatoes, different ratios of peat:vermicompost and peat:insect frass were compared to a 100% peat control. Across all other parameters, tomato fruits and vegetative biomass did not produce significant differences across treatments, indicating results were comparable to the control (i.e., 100% peat). Thus, replacing peat with black soldier fly frass is a viable option and could allow for the peat industry to become more sustainable and regenerative. However, it should be noted that average individual tomato fruit weight was significantly (P < 0.05) higher (by 19%) in the vermicompost 10% treatment compared to the control, which did not differ from treatments including black soldier fly frass., (© The Author(s) 2023. Habrobracon hebetor (Say) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a cosmopolitan, idiobiont, and gregarious ectoparasitoid, which can parasitize the larvae of several pyralid and noctuid moths. However, adult parasitoids require cold storage to ensure that adequate individuals are available when a pest outbreak occurs. To understand the effects of cold storage after acclimation on offspring fitness of H. hebetor, the development, fecundity, population parameters, and paralysis rate of the F1 generation were evaluated using an age-stage, two-sex life table. Four pairing treatments were used in this study, with refrigerated males and females (ReF×ReM), unrefrigerated females and refrigerated males (UnF×ReM), refrigerated females and unrefrigerated males (ReF×UnM), and unrefrigerated females and males (UnF×UnM, control). Cold storage after acclimation had no significant effect on the fecundity or oviposition period of F0-generation H. hebetor. Moreover, the survival rate (Sa = 61.43%), proportion of females (Nf/N = 0.41), intrinsic rate of increase (r = 0.3450), finite rate of increase (λ = 1.4121), net reproduction rate (R0 = 149.47), and net paralysis rate (C0 = 74.52) of ReF×UnM and UnF×UnM (Sa = 50.00%, Nf/N = 0.34, r = 0.3297, λ = 1.3881, R0 = 155.69, C0 = 62.90, respectively) treatments were significantly higher than those of the ReF×ReM treatment (Sa = 45%, Nf/N = 0.16, r = 0.2277, λ = 1.2558, R0 = 68.81, C0 = 31.61, respectively) (except for the Sa of UnF×UnM treatment), and there was no significant difference between the 2 treatments. Overall, it is advisable to avoid simultaneous cold storage of female and male parasitoids or to add unrefrigerated males appropriately when using cold-stored parasitoids to control pests., (© The Author(s) 2023. The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is an invasive agricultural pest that is a serious threat to agricultural production and global food security. Chemical control is the most effective method for preventing outbreaks of S. frugiperda. However, insecticide resistance often develops as a result of prolonged pesticide use, and the molecular mechanisms involved in insecticide resistance remain unclear. Insect cytochrome P450 monooxygenases play an important role in the detoxification of insecticides and insecticide resistance in Lepidoptera. In our study, the LC50 of a novel insecticide (cyproflanilide) and a conventional insecticide (emamectin benzoate) for S. frugiperda second-instar larvae were 7.04 and 1.61 mg/L, respectively. Furthermore, CYP321A9 expression was upregulated in larvae exposed to these insecticides. Additionally, knockdown of CYP321A9 by feeding larvae with dsRNA for 72 h significantly increased the mortality of S. frugiperda exposed to emamectin benzoate and cyproflanilide by 23.33% and 7.78%, respectively. Our results indicate that CYP321A9 may play an important role in the detoxification of emamectin benzoate and cyproflanilide in S. frugiperda. The diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella L.) is the most destructive insect pest on cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata L.). Infestation by this pest usually results in the indiscriminate use of insecticides by farmers due to a lack of sampling plans for this pest. Sampling plans for P. xylostella management decisions on winter-spring cabbage in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa were developed, through population monitoring that comprised weekly counts of immature stages of P. xylostella on 60 plants for 11 wk each during the winter and spring seasons. The mean density-variance relationship was used to describe the distribution of the pest, and number of infested plants was used to develop a fixed-precision sampling plan. All plant growth stages preceding maturation were vulnerable to P. xylostella damage resulting in yield losses. A high aggregation of P. xylostella on cabbage was observed in spring than in winter. The average sample number to estimate P. xylostella density within a 15% standard error of the mean was 35 plants. Furthermore, the estimated plant proportion action threshold (AT) was 51% with density action thresholds of 0.50 and 0.80 for spring and winter, respectively. Fitting P. xylostella cumulative counts in the winter and spring sampling plans resulted in 100% and 45% reduction in insecticide treatments. The similarity of sample size and ATs between both seasons provides evidence that a single sampling plan is practical for all cabbage growing seasons. Detecting and sampling the pest for pest management, either through enumerating their life stages or by quantifying the crop damage, is the cornerstone in deploying integrated pest management. Currently, for spotted-wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii Matsumura, larval extraction from the fruit samples involves immersing the fruits in hot water, salt, or sugar solution. We are introducing a novel, fast, and effective larval sampling technique where D. suzukii larvae can be extracted from infested fruits by subjecting the fruit samples to vacuum pressure. We optimized the vacuum pressure and vacuum duration for larval extraction from blueberries by testing a range of vacuum pressures and durations. A vacuum pressure of -98 kPa for 60 min resulted in the maximum larval recovery of the small, medium, and large larvae from blueberries. A 30-min incubation at -98 kPa also yielded similar results. Larval extraction at -98 kPa for 60 min on average recovered 61, 70, and 83% of larvae from 2, 4, and 6-day incubated fruit samples, respectively. The fruit sample size (37, 149, and 298 g) did not affect the larval extraction efficacy. Additionally, comparing larval extraction efficacy at -98 kPa with the salt and sugar extraction, incubated for 10, 30, and 60 min, suggests that vacuum extraction is comparable to or more efficient than the salt and sugar methods in extracting larvae from the infested blueberries. The gall wasp, Hemadas nubilipennis Ashmead, is a pest of highbush and lowbush blueberry and can pose a challenge to control with foliar sprays due to adult activity being during bloom and because larval development is within plant tissues. We hypothesized that systemic insecticides that move within the blueberry vascular system would reach areas where H. nubilipennis eggs are laid, causing larval mortality. Three application methods, crown injection, soil drench, and foliar spray were applied to potted 'Jersey' blueberry bushes at 50% and 100% rates to quantify systemic residue concentrations in shoots and leaves. Additionally, systemic insecticides were evaluated for control of gall wasps using single-shoot bioassays and measuring larval mortality at 0.01%, 0.1%, 1%, and 10% of field rate provided within a floral pick. Systemic insecticides tested in both studies included imidacloprid, flupyradifurone, and spirotetramat. The potted bush residue study determined that insecticides moved from three tested sites of entry: the roots, crown cavity, and foliage. Results from the shoot bioassays found that the mean percent larval survival of H. nubilipennis was negatively correlated with the concentration of AI detected in galls. Imidacloprid and spirotetramat were found to have the greatest potential for control of H. nubilipennis due to mortality in the shoot bioassays and similar residue concentrations in the potted bush studies to shoot bioassays. Future research should evaluate systemic insecticides applied in highbush blueberry plantings for control of H. nubilipennis using the bioassay mortality assessment method developed in this study., (© The Author(s) 2023. Spathius galinae is a larval parasitoid native to the Russian Far East that was approved for release in the United States in 2015 for biological control of the emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis, an invasive beetle from Asia responsible for widespread mortality of ash trees (Fraxinus spp.) in North America. From 2015 to 2017, 1,340-1,445 females of S. galinae along with males were released into each release plot, paired with a nonrelease control plot (1-12.5 km apart), at 6 postinvasion forested sites containing abundant pole-sized ash trees in Michigan. By 2018, S. galinae had spread to all but one control plot. Based on the first year that S. galinae was found in trees in each control plot and the distances of those trees to the parasitoid release point within each site, we estimated that S. galinae spread at 3.7 (±1.9) km per year after its initial releases in 2015. The proportion of sampled trees with S. galinae broods, brood densities within sampled trees, and parasitism of EAB larvae increased sharply in both control and release plots after the last field releases in 2017, with the highest parasitism rates (42.8-60.3%) in 2020. Life table analysis showed that S. galinae alone reduced EAB's net population growth rate by 35-55% across sites from 2018 to 2020. This study aimed to investigate the growth and development parameters of Phthorimaea absoluta (Meyrick) population at each stage when feeding on 4 host plants: Lycopersicon esculentum, Solanum tuberosum, Solanum melongena, and Nicotiana tabacum. The objective was to predict population dynamics and develop appropriate control strategies. The age-stage sex-life table was used to evaluate survival rate, fecundity, life expectancy, reproductive value, population parameters, and population growth prediction of P. absoluta after feeding on the 4 Solanaceae plants. The results showed significant variations in the fecundity parameters of P. absoluta among the different host plants. The L. esculentum population exhibited the highest average egg-laying period (13.17 ± 0.61 days) and average egg production (219.31 ± 21.02 eggs), while N. tabacum had the lowest values (4.56 ± 0.26 days and 26.08 ± 2.53 eggs, respectively). The gross reproduction rate of P. absoluta feeding on L. esculentum was 146.43 ± 21.00, which was 1.80, 3.77, and 6.39 times higher compared to S. tuberosum, S. melongena, and N. tabacum, respectively. The average age period and population doubling time of P. absoluta feeding on L. esculentum were lower than those of the other 3 host plants. These results indicated that while P. absoluta can complete a generation on L. esculentum, S. tuberosum, S. melongena, and N. tabacum, L. esculentum is the most suitable host for its growth and development. Therefore, in the occurrence and adjacent areas of P. absoluta, relevant authorities should promptly monitor and control its population in the planting areas of Solanaceae plants to prevent further spread., (© The Author(s) 2023. The corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a cosmopolitan pest in the field crop landscape in the southeastern United States. Field corn (Zea mays L.) is the most important midseason host for H. zea where intensive selection pressure occurs for resistance to insecticidal toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Because spatial patterns of H. zea in field corn have not been extensively studied, field corn was sampled for H. zea larvae and injury in 2021 and 2022. Patterns of spatial aggregation were identified in a number of fields in both larval populations and injury. Aggregation of H. zea larvae was less common at R5 than at R2. Associations between the spatial patterns of H. zea and the variability in crop phenology were identified in some fields, with positive associations between plant height and H. zea larvae, indicating that ovipositing H. zea moths avoid areas with reduced plant height and delayed reproductive maturity. Additionally, negative spatial associations between stink bug ear injury and H. zea larvae and their injury were found in a small number of cases, indicating some spatial interactions between the two pest complexes and their injury. Results from these studies provide valuable insight into the spatial patterns of H. zea in field corn. An understanding of the local dispersal and population dynamics of H. zea can be used to help further improve integrated pest management and insect resistance management programs for this major polyphagous pest., (© The Author(s) 2023.
