The National Library of Medicine's (NLM) TOXNET system of databases and databanks contains much useful information for clinicians, but has, perhaps, been seen largely its a tool for those doing research on hazardous substances or for citizens who, want to know more about Superfund listed chemicals used/manufactured/stored/disposed of in their communities. The information contained in the various TOXNET files is drawn from a variety of sources and looks "different" than the usual materials presented in e-book or e-journal format, or in a bibliographic database. Some potential users perhaps shy away from these resources, believing that significant background in chemistry or toxicology is needed to interpret the findings or Io construct a basic search. This column will provide readers with a scenario that illustrates how TOXNET information can be used in a clinical setting: rather than database/databank overviews, quick and direct methods of obtaining information will be described.
