Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is considered an innovative and promising tool for estimating community exposure to a wide range of chemical and biological compounds by analyzing wastewater. Despite scholars' interest in WBE studies, there are uncertainties and limitations associated with this approach. This current review focuses on the feasibility of the WBE approach in assessing environmental pollutants, including pesticides, heavy metals, phthalates, bisphenols, and personal care products (PCPs). Limitations and challenges of WBE studies are initially discussed, and then future perspectives, gaps, and recommendations are presented in this review. One of the key limitations of this approach is the selection and identification of appropriate biomarkers in studies. Selecting biomarkers considering the basic requirements of a human exposure biomarker is the most important criterion for validating this new approach. Assessing the stability of biomarkers in wastewater is crucial for reliable comparisons of substance consumption in the population. However, directly analyzing wastewater does not provide a clear picture of biomarker stability. This uncertainty affects the reliability of temporal and spatial comparisons. Various uncertainties also arise from different steps involved in WBE. These uncertainties include sewage sampling, exogenous sources, analytical measurements, back-calculation, and estimation of the population under investigation. Further research is necessary to ensure that measured pollutant levels accurately reflect human excretion. Utilizing data from WBE can support healthcare policy in assessing exposure to environmental pollutants in the general population. Moreover, WBE seems to be a valuable tool for biomarkers that indicate healthy conditions, lifestyle, disease identification, and exposure to pollutants. Although this approach has the potential to serve as a biomonitoring tool in large communities, it is necessary to monitor more metabolites from wastewater to enhance future studies. Meat, poultry, and seafood such as fish are a valuable source of protein, vitamins and minerals. Considering their high consumption in the human diet, it is necessary to study pollutants (such as PAHs) in them. This present study has focused on the PAHs level and probabilistic risk of health in meat, poultry, fish and related product samples by MSPE-GC/MS technique (magnetic solid-phase extraction with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry). The maximum mean of 16 PAH was detected in smoked fish samples (222.7 ± 13.2 μg/kg) and the minimum mean of 16 PAH was detected in chicken (juje) kebab (112.9 ± 7.2 µg/kg μg/kg). The maximum mean of 4PAHs was detected in tuna fish (23.7 ± 2.4 µg/kg) and the minimum mean of 4PAHs was seen in grilled chicken and sausage samples (non-detected). Our results showed the 4PAHs and B[a]P were lower than the EU (European Union) standard levels (these standard levels were 30 and 5 μg/kg, respectively). Furthermore, the correlation among the type and concentrations of PAHs congeners was investigated through cluster analysis by heat map and principal component analysis. The 90th percentile ILCR (incremental lifetime cancer risk) of PAH compounds in fish, poultry, meat and related products samples was 3.39E-06, which was lower than the maximum acceptable level of risk (10–4). Finally, the highest ILCR was related to hamburger (4.45E-06). Therefore, there is no risk in consuming these foods in Iran, but it is necessary to monitor PAHs concentration in different types of foods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Bisphenol A (BPA), as endocrine-disrupting compound (EDC), is extensively used as an important chemical in the synthesis of polycarbonate polymers and epoxy resins. BPA absorption into the body can result in the development of metabolic disorders such as low sex-specific neurodevelopment, immune toxicity, neurotoxicity and interference of cellular pathway. Therefore, the presence of BPA in the body and the environment can create hazards that must reach standards before being discharged into the environment. Methods: In this study, bismuth ferric nanomagnetic (BFO NMPs) were successfully synthesized via sol-gel method and developed as photocatalysts for BPA removal under visible light irradiation. FE-SEM, TEM, PL, XRD, UV-Vis DRS, VSM, EDX, and FTIR were used to characterize the BFO NMPs. Results: RSM model (R2 = 0.9745) showed a good correlation between experimental and predicted removal efficiency of BPA. The investigation of four independent variables indicated that pH had the most significant positive effect on the degradation of BPA. Under optimal conditions (pH = 4.042, catalyst dose = 7.617 mg, contact time = 122.742 min and BPA concentration = 15.065 mg/L), maximum degradation was calculated to be 98.7%. After five recycles, the removal of BPA remained >82%, which indicated the proper ability to reuse the catalyst. The suitable dustbin can cause a significant increase in household participation in separated dry waste at production source and recycling rate. This study was conducted on 100 households in Tehran for two weeks for households' wastes without any intervention. After two weeks, the tough-flexible bag dustbins were delivered to the families. At the next stage, by analysing the separated dry wastes by households, comparing the cost of new bag dustbin with plastic garbage bags, and completing some questionnaires, it was concluded that about 92% of households believed that waste bag dustbin was much more accessible and hygienic. The use of plastic garbage bags was decreased an average by 2, after using new bag dustbins. Moreover, the use of bag dustbins has more cost-effectiveness rather than plastic bags (about 54%). Before and after the intervention, the source separation and recovery rate was 0.19 and 0.18, respectively. The amount of wet waste in the waste bag dustbin was decreased to 62.26% after the intervention. The decrease of wet waste in the separated dry waste enhanced the quality of recycled materials. Background: In Iran, re-refinery industry has been developed many years ago based on the acid-clay treatment. Acidic sludge with high concentration of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) is the final products of some facilities. In this study removal of TPH by aerated in-vessel composting was investigated. Methods: In order to microorganisms seeding and nutrient providing, urban immature compost was added as an amendment to acidic sludge. The ratios of acidic sludge (AS) to compost were, 1:0 (as control), 1:5, 1:8, 1:10, 1:15, 1:20, 1:30, 1:40, 1:50, 1:75 and 1:100 (as dry basis) at a C: N: P ratio of 100:5:1 and 45-65% moisture content for 70 days. Results: The removal efficiency in all reactors was more than 48%. The highest and lowest TPH removal was observed in 1:5 (71.56%) and 1:100 (48.53%) mixing ratios, respectively. The results of the control reactors showed that biological treatment was the main mechanism for TPH removal. Experimental data was fitted second order kinetic model (R2> 0. 8006). Degradation of TPH in 1:5 mixing ratio (k2 = 0.0038 gmg-1d-1; half-life = 3.08d) was nearly three times faster than 1: 100 mixing ratio (k2 = 0.0238; half-life = 8.96d). The results of the control reactors showed that biological treatment was the main mechanism for TPH removal. Conclusion: The results of this study revealed in-vessel composting with immature urban compost as the amendment maybe recommended as an effective method for TPH remediation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
