Waste paper disposed in landfills notably contributes to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and impedes more sustainable, circular alternatives, such as recycling. In Hong Kong, this unsustainable approach is currently dominant as 68% of waste paper products are treated in landfills in 2020. To contextualize the impact of local waste paper management and explore mitigation potentials of circular alternatives, this paper develops a quantitative assessment framework around GHG emissions development trajectories. Combining guidelines of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), national GHG inventories, and local parameters from life cycle analysis, five GHG emissions projections were simulated along the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) until 2060. Most recent baselines indicate that Hong Kong's current waste paper treatment generated 638,360 tons CO 2 -eq in 2020, comprising 1,821,040 tons CO 2 -eq from landfill and 671,320 tons CO 2 -eq from recycling, and -1,854,000 tons CO 2 -eq from primary material replacement. Proceeding along a Business-as-Usual scenario under SSP5, GHG emissions will dramatically increase to a net 1,072,270 tons CO 2 -eq by 2060, whereas a recycling-intensive scenario will lead to a net saving of -4,323,190 tons CO 2 -eq. To complement the quantitative evidence on the benefits of waste paper recycling, field research was conducted to explore the feasibility of circular policy innovation from the perspective of recycling stakeholders. These empirical qualitative and quantitative findings from stakeholders' business routines and material transactions provide crucial indications for policy and institutional innovation: Essentially, for Hong Kong to improve waste paper recycling capacities and facilitate a circular economy (CE), local stakeholders require support via fiscal policy measures (financial subsidies or tax reductions) and infrastructure improvements (delivery access and material storage). Land-use change in the boreal forest region leads to agriculture to be carried out on acid, shallow and low fertility soils. To correct soil fertility and promote crop productivity, manure and inorganic fertilizers are added, increasing the risk for greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE). To reduce the reliance on synthetic soil amendments while taking advantage of locally relevant industrial by-products, wood ash (WA) and paper sludge (SL) have been proposed as soil amendments for a range of soil types. We posited that amending soils with WA, SL and biochar will improve soil health parameters and fertility of boreal soils. Microbial activity resulting to nitrogen losses and availability were assessed. WA had a stronger ameliorative effect on acid boreal soils compared to SL. Both WA and SL increased soil microbial biomass and basal respiration resulting in higher net mineralization and thus significant increases in CO 2 emissions. Co-application of urea with WA or SL further increased net mineralization compared to when used independently. Conversely, the biochar's effect was short-lived and not significant. Nevertheless, addition of biochar was shown to reduce CO 2 emissions in all cases except in WA amended soils. No significant differences were observed in CH 4 emissions across all treatments. WA and SL may improve soil fertility and quality but could also contribute significantly to GHG emissions in acid boreal soils. China's paper industry development is rapid, but the recycling rate of China's waste paper has been low all the time. Meanwhile, material flow analysis can help determine the flow of waste paper, and life cycle assessment (LCA) is the methodological framework for quantifying greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, present study integrates these two methods into the model construction of China's waste paper recycling decision system. Present study constructs a benchmark model of China's waste paper recycling decision system in 2017, focusing on the impact of nonstandard waste paper recycling on the economic and environmental benefits of China's domestic waste paper recycling system. This model construction is followed by sensitivity analysis of the relevant parameters affecting the efficiency of the waste paper recycling system. Finally, present study forecasts the system's economic benefits and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the context of integrating and regulating nonstandard recycling vendors. The results show that the economic benefit of China's waste paper recycling in 2017 is approximately 458.3 yuan/t and that the GHG emissions are 901.1 kgCO 2 eq. The standard recovery rate and nonstandard recovery acceptance rate will both have a significant impact on the system's economic benefits and improve the GHG emissions structure. In the context of integrating nonstandard recycling enterprises and individual recycling vendors, the economic benefits will rise to 3312.5 yuan/t in 2030, while GHG emissions will rise to 942.9 kgCO 2 eq. Biogas production is seen as one of the key measures in circular economy providing several benefits for the environment. In practice, however, these benefits may not be achieved if the production is not implemented and managed in ways that reduce gaseous emissions. Thus, this study aimed at highlighting how different management practices impact the climate during the life cycle of biogas production in comparison to management without biogas production (reference). Advanced, more emission-reducing practices resulted in 97-107% and conventional practices in 57-75% less emissions when biogas was utilized as transport fuel. If biogas was utilized in CHP (combined heat and power production), the emission reductions were 67-74% and 13-30%, respectively. This reflects the fact that inefficient practices can lead to minimal emission reduction without achieving the desired climate benefit in comparison to the reference. On the European level, this may also mean that the emission reduction demands of RED II (Renewable Energy Directive) regulation are not met. In this paper, a novel methodology and extended hybrid model for the real time control, prediction and reduction of direct emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is proposed to overcome the lack of long-term data availability in several full-scale case studies. A mechanistic model (MCM) and a machine learning (ML) model are combined to real time control, predict the emissions of nitrous oxide (N 2 O) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) as well as effluent quality (COD - chemical oxygen demand, NH 4 -N - ammonia, NO 3 -N - nitrate) in activated sludge method. For methane (CH 4 ), using the MCM model, predictions are performed on the input data (VFA, CODs for aerobic and anaerobic compartments) to the MLM model. Additionally, scenarios were analyzed to assess and reduce the GHGs emissions related to the biological processes. A real WWTP, with a population equivalent (PE) of 125,000, was studied for the validation of the hybrid model. A global sensitivity analysis (GSA) of the MCM and a ML model were implemented to assess GHGs emission mechanisms the biological reactor. Finally, an early warning tool for the prediction of GHGs errors was implemented to assess the accuracy and the reliability of the proposed algorithm. Soil organic carbon (SOC) pool, the largest part of terrestrial ecosystem, controls global terrestrial carbon balance and consequently presented carbon cycle-climate feedback in climate projections. Microplastics, (MPs, <5 mm) as common pollutants in soil ecosystems, have an obvious impact on soil-borne carbon circulation by affecting soil microbial processes, which play a central role in regulating SOC conversion. In this review, we initially presented the sources, properties and ecological risks of MPs in soil ecosystem, and then the differentiated effects of MPs on the component of SOC, including dissolved organic carbon, soil microbial biomass carbon and easily oxidized organic carbon varying with the types and concentrations of MPs, the soil types, etc. As research turns into a broader perspective, greenhouse gas emissions dominated by the mineralization of SOC coming into view since it can be significantly affected by MPs and is closely associated with soil microbial respiration. The pathways of MPs impacting soil microbes-driven carbon conversion include changing microbial community structure and composition, the functional enzyme's activity and the abundance and expression of functional genes. However, numerous uncertainties still exist regarding the microbial mechanisms in the deeper biochemical process. The current trend in the European biogas industry is to shift away from electricity production towards the production of biomethane for the need to replace natural gas. The upgrading of biogas to biomethane is normally performed by separating the biogas in a stream containing natural gas grid quality methane and a stream containing mostly CO 2 . The CO 2 stream is normally released into the atmosphere; however, part of the methane may still remain in it, and, if not oxidized, even a small fraction of methane released may jeopardise all the GHG emissions savings from producing the biomethane, being methane a powerful climate forcer. Scope of this work is to assess the opportunity cost of installing an Off Gas Combustion (OGC) device in biomethane upgrading plants. The currently available technologies for biogas upgrading to biomethane and the most common technology of OGC (the Regenerative Thermal Oxidisers, RTO) are described according to their performances and cost. Then the cost per tonne of CO 2 eq avoided associated to the adoption of RTO systems in relation to the upgrading performance is calculated to identify a potential threshold for an effective and efficient application of the RTO systems. It is found that, in case of upgrading technologies which can capture almost all biomethane in the upgrading off-gas (i.e. 99.9%), currently the adoption of an RTO to oxidise the methane left in the off-gas would add costs and need additional fuel to be operated, but would generate limited GHG emission savings, therefore the cost per tonne of CO 2 eq emissions avoided would result not competitive with other GHG emissions mitigation investments. While the installation of RTOs on upgrading systems with a methane slip of 0.3%, or higher, normally results cost competitive in reducing GHG emissions. Tidal wetlands play a critical role in emitting greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere; our understanding of the intricate interplay between natural processes and human activities shaping their biogeochemistry and GHG emissions remains lacking. In this study, we delve into the spatiotemporal dynamics and key drivers of the GHG emissions from five tidal wetlands in the Scheldt Estuary by focusing on the interactive impacts of salinity and water pollution, two factors exhibiting contrasting gradients in this estuarine system: pollution escalates as salinity declines. Our findings reveal a marked escalation in GHG emissions when moving upstream, primarily attributed to increased concentrations of organic matter and nutrients, coupled with reduced levels of dissolved oxygen and pH. These low water quality conditions not only promote methanogenesis and denitrification to produce CH 4 and N 2 O, respectively, but also shift the carbonate equilibria towards releasing more CO 2 . As a result, the most upstream freshwater wetland was the largest GHG emitter with a global warming potential around 35 to 70 times higher than the other wetlands. When moving seaward along a gradient of decreasing urbanization and increasing salinity, wetlands become less polluted and are characterized by lower concentrations of NO 3 - , TN and TOC, which induces stronger negative impact of elevated salinity on the GHG emissions from the saline wetlands. Consequently, these meso-to polyhaline wetlands released considerably smaller amounts of GHGs. In this study, the effects of micro-positive pressure formed by covering with a semipermeable membrane in the heating phase of dairy manure composting on greenhouse gas emissions and the mechanism of reducing methane emissions by the archaeal community were investigated. A large-scale experiment was conducted with semipermeable membrane-covered composting (SMC), forced aeration composting (FAC), and traditional static composting (TSC) groups. The results showed that the oxygen concentration and methanogen abundance were key factors in regulating methane emissions. In the heating phase of SMC, the micro-positive pressure could enhance the O 2 utilization rate and heating rate, resulting in Methanobrevibacter and Methanobacterium greatly decreasing, and the abundance of mcrA decreased by 90.03%, while that of pmoA did not increase. Compared with FAC and TSC, the cumulative methane emissions in SMC decreased by 51.75% and 96.04%, respectively. The greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), consisting mainly of methane (CH 4 ) and nitrous oxide (N 2 O), have been constantly increasing and become a non-negligible contributor towards carbon neutrality. The precise evaluation of plant-specific GHG emissions, however, remains challenging. The current assessment approach is based on the product of influent load and emission factor (EF), of which the latter is quite often a single value with huge uncertainty. In particular, the latest default Tier 1 value of N 2 O EF, 0.016 ± 0.012 kg N2O - N kg TN -1 , is estimated based on the measurement of 30 municipal WWTPs only, without involving any industrial wastewater. Therefore, to resolve the pattern of GHG emissions from industrial WWTPs, this work conducted a 14-month monitoring campaign covering all the process units at a full-scale industrial WWTP in Shanghai, China. The total CH 4 and N 2 O emissions from the whole plant were, on average, 447.7 ± 224.5 kg CO2-eq d -1 and 1605.3 ± 2491.0 kg CO2-eq d -1 , respectively, exhibiting a 5.2- or 3.9-times more significant deviation than the influent loads of chemical oxygen demand (COD) or total nitrogen (TN). The resulting EFs, 0.00072 kg CH4 kg COD -1 and 0.00211 kg N2O - N kg TN -1 , were just 0.36% of the IPCC recommended value for CH 4 , and 13.2% for N 2 O. Besides, the parallel anoxic-oxic (A/O) lines of this industrial WWTP were covered in two configurations, allowing the comparison of GHG emissions from different odor control setup. To achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, we need economic means of sequestering carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). We analyze the sequestration potential of the Intermountain West (I-West) region, US, as a primary energy transition hub through analysis of wellbore retrofit potential and emission reduction in both fugitive gas abatement and flare gas. We selected the I-West region due to its abundant energy sources and oil and gas production legacy. Preliminary analysis hints that well retrofits can breathe new life into a well at a fraction of the cost of a new drill. With millions of potential candidates in the US, even a modest fraction (1% or less) suitable for retrofit could accelerate the shift to large-scale CO 2 sequestration. Fugitive gas, the unintentional release of wellbore gases such as methane, is a significant emissions source. Through conservative analysis, it is estimated that wellhead leakage alone may account for 5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO 2 e) emissions. We conclude by assessing the CO 2 emissions from flaring, which is the burning of associated gas during well operations, conservative analysis indicates flaring contributes another 2 million tonnes of CO 2 emissions to the region. We find that with targeted retrofit and better controls on emissions sources, the I-West region can make a significant impact in the nation's push to become net-zero. Given the significance of nitrogen (N) as the most constraining nutrient in agro-ecosystems, it is crucial to develop an updated model for N fertilizers management to achieve higher crop yields while minimizing the negative impacts on the environment. Coated urea is touted as one of the most important controlled-release N fertilizers used in agriculture to reduce cropland emissions and improve nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) for optimal crop yields. The sustainability of coated urea depends on the trade-offs between crop productivity, NUE and greenhouse gas emissions (CO 2 , CH 4 and N 2 O); however, role of various agro-edaphic factors in influencing these trade-offs remains unclear. To determine the effects of soil properties, climatic conditions, experimental conditions, and type of coated urea on greenhouse gas emissions, NH 3 losses, crop productivity, and NUE, we conducted a meta-analysis using data from 76 peer-reviewed studies. Our results showed that the application of coated urea under field conditions contributed to a greater reduction in N 2 O emissions (-48.67%) and higher NUE (58.72%), but crop yields were not significant. Across different climate regions, subtropical monsoon climate showed a perceptible mitigation for CO 2 , CH 4 and NH 3 (-78.38%; -83.33%; -27.46%), while temperate climate reduced N 2 O emissions by -70.36%. For different crops, only rice demonstrated reduction in CO 2 , CH 4 , N 2 O and NH 3 losses. On the other hand, our findings revealed a mitigating trade-off between CO 2 and CH 4 emissions on medium-textured soils and N 2 O emissions on fine-textured soils. A significant reduction in N 2 O and NH 3 losses was evident when coated urea was applied to soils with a pH > 5.5. Interestingly, application of coated urea to soils with higher C/N ratios increased NH 3 losses but showed a noticeable N 2 O reduction. We found that polymer-coated urea reduced CH 4 and N 2 O emissions and NH 3 losses at the expense of higher CO 2 emissions. Moreover, application of a lower dose of coated urea (0-100 kg N ha -1 ) enhanced CO 2 and CH 4 mitigation, while N 2 O mitigation increased linearly with increasing dose of coated urea. Most importantly, our results showed that the application of coated urea leads to a large mismatch between NUE, crop yields and greenhouse gas mitigation. By and large, the application of coated urea did not correspond with higher crop yields despite significant reduction in the emissions and improved NUE. Several countries have imposed either a ban or a tax on single-use plastic packaging, motivated by their contribution to marine plastic pollution. This may lead consumers to opt for similar unregulated substitutes, potentially undermining or even counteracting the intended effect of the policy instrument. The purpose of this study is to theoretically and empirically compare the environmental and welfare effects of the first-best Pigouvian taxes on both plastic bags and a substitute (paper bags), with two alternative second-best policy instruments: a tax on plastic products alone, and a common uniform tax on all packaging materials. The empirical analysis accounts for two different types of environmental externalities from the use of both bag types: marine pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. It also compares results for two countries, Denmark and the USA, which differ in the demand for plastic and paper bags. The theoretical analysis shows that a unilateral tax on plastic bags should equal the marginal environmental damage of plastic bags minus a fraction of the marginal environmental cost of paper bags, hence being lower than the Pigouvian tax. The optimal common tax should equal a weighted average of the marginal environmental damage of the two bag types and would be lower than the Pigouvian tax on plastics if the marginal external cost of plastic bags exceeds that for paper bags. The empirical analysis shows that for default parameters, the variation in tax level across the studied scenarios is small. It also shows that if Pigouvian taxes cannot be implemented, a common uniform tax on both bag types would result in a higher welfare gain than a tax on plastic bags alone. Sensitivity analysis reveals that the level of the second-best taxes and their associated environmental and welfare impacts are sensitive to assumptions regarding the littering rate and decay rate of plastic bags in the marine environment. • A separate tax on plastic bags leads to substitution towards unregulated products. • Both plastic bags and substitutes cause marine pollution and GHG emissions. • We estimate first and second-best environmental taxes on plastic and paper bags. • Pigouvian taxes on both plastic and paper bags yield the highest welfare effect. • A uniform tax on all bags yields higher welfare than a single tax on plastic bags. Tackling climate change remains a critical challenge for society. Achieving climate neutrality requires a massive expansion of renewable energies such as wind and photovoltaics (PV). Agriculture plays a key role in this context, especially as the expansion of ground-mounted PV systems often leads to land-use conflicts. Agrivoltaics (AV), which combines agricultural and electricity production, can be a solution, but the synergies are particularly dependent on local agronomic conditions. There is also a knowledge gap in how AV expansion impacts greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at the landscape level and how it contributes to regional emission reduction targets. In this study, we analysed the economic and climate change mitigation impacts of AV expansion pathways in the German state Baden-Württemberg using an integrated land use model and life cycle assessment under the assumption of general rentability of electricity production by AV. We found that implementing AV on 1%-5% of the regions's arable and grassland area reduced the total agricultural gross margin by a maximum of approximately 0.5%. Concurrently, AV implementation reduced GHG emissions by about 1.2 million to 5.9 million metric tons of CO 2 equivalent (Mt CO 2 -eq). Even if this reduction is almost exclusively accounted for in the energy sector, in absolute terms it amounts to more than the current GHG emissions from Baden-Württemberg's agricultural sector (about 4.4 Mt CO 2 -eq in 2021). In the 5% expansion scenario, almost 90% of the installations were installed on grassland, but this share dropped to 72% when considering landscape quality constraints. Although we found considerable regional disparity, our findings still suggest that AV is an essential component for regional emission reduction targets. Globally, forest soils are considered as important sources and sinks of greenhouse gases (GHGs). However, most studies on forest soil GHG fluxes are confined to the topsoils (above 20 cm soil depths), with only very limited information being available regarding these fluxes in the subsoils (below 20 cm soil depths), especially in managed forests. This limits deeper understanding of the relative contributions of different soil depths to GHG fluxes and global warming potential (GWP). Here, we used a concentration gradient-based method to comprehensively investigate the effects of thinning intensity (15% vs. 35%) and nutrient addition (no fertilizer vs. NPK fertilizers) on soil GHG fluxes from the 0-40 cm soil layers at 10 cm depth intervals in a Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) plantation. Results showed that forest soils were the sources of CO 2 and N 2 O, but the sinks of CH 4 . Soil GHG fluxes decreased with increasing soil depth, with the 0-20 cm soil layers identified as the dominant producers of CO 2 and N 2 O and consumers of CH 4 . Thinning intensity did not significantly affect soil GHG fluxes. However, fertilization significantly increased CO 2 and N 2 O emissions and CH 4 uptake at 0-20 cm soil layers, but decreased them at 20-40 cm soil layers. This is because fertilization alleviated microbial N limitation and decreased water filled pore space (WFPS) in topsoils, while it increased WFPS in subsoils, ultimately suggesting that soil WFPS and N availability (especially NH 4 + -N) were the predominant regulators of GHG fluxes along soil profiles. Generally, there were positive interactive effects of thinning and fertilization on soil GHG fluxes. Moreover, the 35% thinning intensity without fertilization had the lowest GWP among all treatments. Quercus gilva, an evergreen tree species in Quercus section Cyclobalanopsis, is an ecologically and economically valuable species in subtropical regions of East Asia. Predicting the impact of climate change on potential distribution of Q. gilva can provide a scientific basis for the conservation and utilization of its genetic resources, as well as for afforestation. In this study, 74 distribution records of Q. gilva and nine climate variables were obtained after data collection and processing. Current climate data downloaded from WorldClim and future climate data predicted by four future climate scenarios (2040s SSP1-2.6, 2040s SSP5-8.5, 2060s SSP1-2.6, and 2060s SSP5-8.5) mainly based on greenhouse gases emissions of distribution sites were used in MaxEnt model with optimized parameters to predict distribution dynamics of Q. gilva and its response to climate change. The results showed that the predicted current distribution was consistent with natural distribution of Q. gilva, which was mainly located in Hunan, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guizhou, and Taiwan provinces of China, as well as Japan and Jeju Island of South Korea. Under current climate conditions, precipitation factors played a more significant role than temperature factors on distribution of Q. gilva, and precipitation of driest quarter (BIO17) is the most important restriction factor for its current distribution (contribution rate of 57.35%). Under future climate conditions, mean temperature of driest quarter (BIO9) was the essential climate factor affecting future change in potential distribution of Q. gilva. As the degree of climatic anomaly increased in the future, the total area of predicted distribution of Q. gilva showed a shrinking trend (decreased by 12.24%-45.21%) and Q. gilva would migrate to high altitudes and latitudes. Onsite sanitation systems (OSS) are significant sources of greenhouse gases (GHG) including carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), methane (CH 4 ) and nitrous oxide (N 2 O). While a handful of studies have been conducted on GHG emissions from OSS, systematic evaluation of literature on this subject is limited. Our systematic review and meta-analysis provides state-of-the- art information on GHG emissions from OSS and identifies novel areas for investigation. The paper analyzes GHG emission rates from different OSS, the influence of various design, operational, and environmental factors on emission rates and proffers mitigation measures. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, we identified 16 articles which quantified GHG emissions from OSS. Septic tanks emit substantial amounts of CO 2 and CH 4 ranging from 1.74 to 398.30 g CO 2 /cap/day and 0.06-110.13 g CH 4 /cap/day, respectively, but have low N 2 O emissions (0.01-0.06 g N₂O/cap/day). CH 4 emissions from pit latrines range from 0.77 to 20.30 g CH 4 /cap/day N 2 O emissions range from 0.76 to 1.20 gN 2 O/cap/day. We observed statistically significant correlations (p < 0.05) between temperature, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, storage period, and GHG emissions from OSS. However, no significant correlation (p > 0.05) was observed between soil volumetric water content and CO 2 emissions. CH 4 emissions (expressed as CO 2 equivalents) from OSS estimated following Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) guidelines were found to be seven times lower (90.99 g CO 2 e/cap/day) than in-situ field emission measurements (704.7 g CO 2 e/cap/day), implying that relying solely on IPCC guidelines may lead to underestimation of GHG emission from OSS. Our findings underscore the importance of considering local contexts and environmental factors when estimating GHG emissions from OSS. Plausible mitigation measures for GHG emissions from OSS include converting waste to biogas in anaerobic systems (e.g. biogas), applying biochar, and implementing mitigation policies that equally address inequalities in sanitation service access. Future research on GHG from OSS should focus on in-situ measurements of GHGs from pit latrines and other common OSS in developing countries, understanding the fate and transport of dissolved organics like CH 4 in OSS effluents and impacts of microbial communities in OSS on GHG emissions. Global land resources are over-exploited and natural habitats are declining, often driven by expanding livestock production. In Ireland, pastureland for grazing cattle and sheep account for circa 60% of terrestrial land use. The agriculture, forestry and other land use sector (AFOLU) is responsible for 44% of national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. A new Grassland Animal response Model (GLAM) was developed to relate livestock-cohort grass and feed requirements to farm-grassland system areas, enhancing environmental assessment of prospective AFOLU configurations. Although land conversion targets are often well-defined, they tend to lack a clear definition of where land sparing can occur. Through analyses of 10 scenarios of milk and beef production and management strategies, we found that displacing beef cows with dairy cows can increase national protein output while sparing up to 0.75 million ha (18%) of grassland (albeit with a minor increase in overseas land requirement for additional concentrate feed). Reducing slaughter age, increasing exports of male dairy calves and increasing grassland use efficiency on beef farms each achieved between 0.19 and 0.32 million ha of land sparing. Sexed semen to achieve more favourable male-female birth ratios had a minor impact. GHG emissions, ammonia emissions and nutrient leaching were only reduced substantially when overall cattle numbers declined, confirming the need for cattle reductions to achieve environmental objectives. Nonetheless, application of GLAM shows potential for improved grass and cattle management to spare good quality land suitable for productive forestry and wetland restoration. Microplastics (MPs) accumulation in terrestrial ecosystems can affect greenhouse gases (GHGs) production by altering microbial and soil structure. Presently, research on the MPs effect on plants is not consistent, and underlying molecular mechanisms associated with GHGs are yet unknown. For the first time, we conducted a microcosm study to explore the impact of MPs addition (Raw vs. aged) and Trichoderma longibrachiatum and Bacillus subtilis inoculation (Sole vs. combination) on GHGs emission, soil community structure, physiochemical properties, and enzyme activities. Our results indicated that the addition of aged MPs considerably enhanced the GHGs emissions (N 2 O (+16%) and CO 2 (+21%), respectively), C and N cycling gene expression, microbial biomass carbon, and soil physiochemical properties than raw MPs. However, the soil microbial community structure and enzyme activities were enhanced in raw MPs added treatments, irrespective of the MPs type added to soil. However, microbial inoculation significantly reduced GHGs emission by altering the expression of C and N cycling genes in both types of MPs added treatments. The soil microbial community structure, enzymes activities, physiochemical properties and microbial biomass carbon were enhanced in the presence of microbial inoculation in both type of MPs. Among sole and combined inoculation of Trichoderma and Bacillus subtilis, the co-applied Trichoderma and Bacillus subtilis considerably reduced the GHGs emission (N 2 O (-64%) and CO 2 (-61%), respectively) by altering the expression of C and N cycling genes regardless of MPs type used. The combined inoculation also enhanced soil enzyme activities, microbial community structure, physiochemical properties and microbial biomass carbon in both types of MPs treatment. Introduction of alpine grasses to low altitude regions has long been a crucial strategy for enriching germplasm diversity, cultivating and acclimating high-quality species, enhancing ecosystem resilience and adaptability, as well as facilitating ecosystem restoration. However, there is an urgent need to investigate the impacts of planting Gramineae seeds on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly during the critical stage of early plant growth. In this study, four species of grass seeds (Stipa breviflora, Poa pratensis, Achnatherum splendens, Elymus nutans) were collected from 19 high-altitude regions surrounding the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and sown at low-altitude. Measurements of GHG emissions at early seedling growth in the mesocosm experiment using static chamber method showed a strong increase in the cumulative emissions of CO 2 (5.71%-9.19%) and N 2 O (11.36%-13.64%) (p < 0.05), as well as an elevated CH 4 uptake (2.75%-5.50%) in sites where the four grass species were introduced, compared to bare soil. Consequently, there was a substantial rise in global warming potential (13.87%-16.33%) (p < 0.05) at grass-introduced sites. Redundancy analysis showed that seed traits, plant biomass, and seedling emergence percentage were the main driving biotic factors of three GHGs fluxes. Our study unveils the potential risk of escalating GHG emissions induced by introducing high altitude grasses to low altitude bare soil, elucidating the mechanism through linking seed traits with seedling establishment and environmental feedback. Knowledge of freeze-thaw-induced carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling and concomitant nitrous oxide (N 2 O) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions in perennial bioenergy crops is crucial to understanding the contribution of these crops in mitigating climate change through reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In this study, a 49-day laboratory incubation experiment was conducted to compare the impact of freeze-thaw cycles on N 2 O and CO 2 emissions in different perennial bioenergy crops [miscanthus (Miscanthus giganteus L.), switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.), and willow (Salix miyabeana L.)] to a successional site and to understand the processes controlling the N 2 O and CO 2 emissions in these crops. The results showed that freeze-thaw cycles caused a decline in dissolved organic C (DOC) and dissolved inorganic N (DIN) concentrations but enhanced the dissolved organic N (DON) and nitrate (NO 3 - ). Although, freeze-thaw decreased water stable soil aggregates in all the bioenergy crops and successional site, this did not have any significant impact on N 2 O and CO 2 emissions, suggesting that the N 2 O and CO 2 emitted during the freeze-thaw cycles may have originated mostly from cellular materials released from lysis and death of microbial biomass rather than from soil aggregate disruption. Cumulative N 2 O emissions measured over the 49-day incubation period ranged from 148 mg N 2 O-N m -2 to 17 mg N 2 O-N m -2 and were highest in miscanthus followed by willow, switchgrass, and successional site. Cumulative CO 2 on the other hand was highest in the successional site than any of the bioenergy crops and ranged from 25,262 mg CO 2 -C m -2 to 15,403 mg CO 2 -C m -2 after the 49 days. Higher N 2 O emissions in the miscanthus and willow than switchgrass and successional site were attributed to accelerated N losses as N 2 O. Brazil's major beef production occurs in the Cerrado, predominantly as extensive pastures that covers ∼50 Mha of the biome, of which approximately 2/3 show signs of degradation. Pasture recovery is now a key environmental policy, as it improves land use efficiency and soil carbon sequestration. However, as intensification leads to higher cattle stocking rates and external inputs (fertilizers, liming, etc.), the impact of improved pastures on greenhouse gas mitigation is still debatable. This study focused on the Cerrado biome and aimed to (i) quantify soil carbon stock changes under different scenarios of management and recovery of degraded pastures. In addition, (ii) the potential for capturing carbon in the soil to mitigate emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) by the intensification of pastures was evaluated. Soil C stock changes (0-20 cm) were assessed using the Century model version 4.5, which had been previously validated for the region. Model parameters were adjusted for three pastures classes (degraded, intermediately degraded, and not degraded) within a time-series (1985-2020) of land use maps for the Cerrado, serving as baselines. Scenarios of pasture intensification were modeled against these baselines, and an analysis was carried out on the estimated changes in soil C stock and greenhouse gas balance. Before the intensification scenario (year 2020), the total carbon stock was estimated to be ∼1830 Mt for the whole pasture area, whose spatial distribution corresponded to edaphoclimatic contrasts and pasture conditions. The highest soil organic carbon stocks were observed in the non-degraded pastures. With the increase in carrying capacity, beef production is estimated to potentially increase by 1/3 due to the recovery of degraded areas through intensive management. This increase would be sufficient to meet the projected ∼12% increase in Brazil's livestock production by the end of the decade if all pasture areas are restored, which is much possibly an unrealistic scenario as not all degraded areas are suitable for crops or can successfully improve pasture yield. In addition, the increase in soil C stocks was only sufficient to compensate for 27% and 42% of the GHG emissions resulting from intensification in areas with intermediate and severe degradation, respectively. Therefore, to strike a balance between economic considerations and environmental impact, additional strategies are needed to reduce GHG emissions and/or enhance C sinks, such as increasing tree density on farms. Utilising cardboard waste for the partial substitution of cement within concrete has the potential to yield significant sustainability benefits. Cardboard waste is abundantly available, and a significant proportion of this material is disposed of in landfill. However, conversion of waste cardboard into kraft fibres (KFs) for concrete implementation can be utilised in the building and construction industry. Therefore, identification of sustainability variables associated with cardboard waste in concrete is vital. In this study, two KF composites satisfied the criteria for low stress grade concrete and were subsequently evaluated. SFKF5 mix design contained 5% KFs and SFKF105 contained 10% KFs with 5% metakaolin (MK). Both composites had silica fume (SF) as a fibre modification technique for durability purposes. A life cycle assessment (LCA) determined the environmental effect of waste cardboard integration. A Monte-Carlo simulation was utilised as the sensitivity analysis to investigate transportation and energy manufacturing greenhouse gas (GHG) emission variables. LCA results of SFKF105 had a savings of 11%, 8%, 4% and 1% for terrestrial acidification potential, global warming potential (GWP), terrestrial ecotoxicity potential (TEP) and human toxicity potential, respectively. SFKF5 revealed savings of 3%, 2% and 4% for GWP, TEP and marine eutrophication potential, respectively. The additional travel requirements of KFs and MK to the cement batching plant for composite production did not surpass the embodied energy and travel emissions of the control. However, this was negated due to the additional energy requirements to manufacture KFs. Inspection, standing for top-down environmental management practices, also known as campaign-style governance, is used by central governments to lessen local environmental pollution. However, there is no causal evidence for carbon abatement. Employing staggered difference-in-differences (DiD), I find that inspected cities mitigate carbon intensity and carbon emissions by 3.72% and 2.34%, respectively, with economic significance. Conducting a triple difference strategy, I suggest the channels are the local people's congresses and political consultative conferences' proposals, government attention, environmental regulation, industrial structure, and green innovation. Also, the heterogeneous effects suggest that municipal party secretaries assigned to their birthplace, the older the party standing and age, and those with natural sciences majors, are more conducive to the inspection achieving carbon mitigation. An alternative DiD specification shows that the "look-back" inspection achieves sustained carbon reduction. Significant amounts of the greenhouse gas methane (CH 4 ) are released into the atmosphere worldwide via freshwater sources. The surface methane maximum (SMM), where methane is supersaturated in surface water, has been observed in aquatic systems and contributes significantly to emissions. However, little is known about the temporal and spatial variability of SMM or the mechanisms underlying its development in artificial reservoirs. Here, the community composition of methanogens as major methane producers in the water column and the mcrA gene was investigated, and the cause of surface methane supersaturation was analyzed. In accordance with the findings, elevated methane concentration of SMM in the transition zone, with an annually methane emission flux 2.47 times higher than the reservoir average on a large and deep reservoir. In the transition zone, methanogens with mcrA gene abundances ranging from 0.5 × 10 3 -1.45 × 10 4 copies/L were found. Methanobacterium, Methanoseata and Methanosarcina were the three dominate methanogens, using both acetic acid and H 2 /CO 2 pathways. In summary, this study contributes to our comprehension of CH 4 fluxes and their role in the atmospheric methane budget. Organophosphonates (OPs) are a unique group of natural and synthetic compounds, characterised by the presence of a stable, hard-to-cleave bond between the carbon and phosphorus atoms. OPs exhibit high resistance to abiotic degradation, excellent chelating properties and high biological activity. Despite the huge and increasing scale of OP production and use worldwide, little is known about their transportation and fate in the environment. Available data are dominated by information concerning the most recognised organophosphonate - the herbicide glyphosate - while other OPs have received little attention. In this paper, a comprehensive review of the current state of knowledge about natural and artificial OPs is presented (including glyphosate). Based on the available literature, a number of knowledge gaps have been identified that need to be filled in order to understand the environmental effects of these abundant compounds. Special attention has been given to GHG-related processes, with a particular focus on CH 4 . This stems from the recent discovery of OP-dependent CH 4 production in aqueous environments under aerobic conditions. The process has changed the perception of the biogeochemical cycle of CH 4, since it was previously thought that biological methane formation was only possible under anaerobic conditions. However, there is a lack of knowledge on whether OP-associated methane is also formed in soils. Moreover, it remains unclear whether anthropogenic OPs affect the CH 4 cycle, a concern of significant importance in the context of the increasing rate of global warming. This study presents the effects on carbon and nutrient removal, membrane fouling and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of an Oxic-Settling-Anaerobic (OSA) - Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) pilot plant fed with real wastewater. The influence of three sludge return internal ratios (IR) was investigated by testing 45, 75 and 100%. The results showed that with the increase of IR, the biological sludge production substantially decreased by 85.8% due to the combination of cell lysis and endogenous metabolism. However, a worsening of ammonia removal efficiencies occurred (from 94.5 % to 84.7 with an IR value of 45 and 100%, respectively) mostly due to the ammonia release caused by cell lysis under anaerobic conditions. The N 2 O emission factor increased with the rise of IR (namely, from 2.17% to 2.54% of the total influent nitrogen). In addition, a variation of carbon footprint (CF) (0.78, 0.62 and 0.75 kgCO 2eq m -3 with 45, 75 and 100% IR, respectively) occurred with IR mainly due to the different energy consumption and carbon oxidation during the three periods. The study's relevance is to address the optimal operating conditions in view of reducing sludge production. Salinity stress poses a significant challenge to agriculture, impacting soil health, plant growth and contributing to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In response to these intertwined challenges, the use of biochar and its nanoscale counterpart, nano-biochar, has gained increasing attention. This comprehensive review explores the heterogeneous role of biochar and nano-biochar in enhancing salt resilience in plants and soil while concurrently mitigating GHG emissions. The review discusses the effects of these amendments on soil physicochemical properties, improved water and nutrient uptake, reduced oxidative damage, enhanced growth and the alternation of soil microbial communities, enhance soil fertility and resilience. Furthermore, it examines their impact on plant growth, ion homeostasis, osmotic adjustment and plant stress tolerance, promoting plant development under salinity stress conditions. Emphasis is placed on the potential of biochar and nano-biochar to influence soil microbial activities, leading to altered emissions of GHG emissions, particularly nitrous oxide(N 2 O) and methane(CH 4 ), contributing to climate change mitigation. The comprehensive synthesis of current research findings in this review provides insights into the multifunctional applications of biochar and nano-biochar, highlighting their potential to address salinity stress in agriculture and their role in sustainable soil and environmental management. Low-carbon cities (LCC) are conducive to low-carbon development and reshaping the urban economic growth model. However, it is still unknown whether it has a synergistic mitigation effect on other greenhouse gases (GHGs). In this study, a dataset comprising 283 Chinese cities spanning the period 2003 to 2019 is chosen. We employ spatial difference-in-difference (SDID) modeling to investigate both the impacts and mechanisms of LCC on GHG emissions performance. The results show that (1) LCC notably lowers local GHG emissions, enhances emission efficiency, and improves GHG emissions performance in neighboring cities within a 1000 km radius. (2) LCC indirectly enhances the GHG emissions performance of local and neighboring cities through energy intensity and green technology innovation. Notably, LCC boosts the local GHG emissions performance by industrial structure upgrading and resource allocation but harms the positive spillover effects on nearby cities due to the siphoning effect. (3) The effect and spatial impact of LCC on GHG emission performance is notably pronounced in eastern cities, non-resource cities, and key environmental protection areas. Drylands refer to water scarcity and low nutrient levels, and their plant and biocrust distribution is highly diverse, making the microbial processes that shape dryland functionality particularly unique compared to other ecosystems. Drylands are constraint for sustainable agriculture and risk for food security, and expected to increase over time. Nitrous oxide (N 2 O), a potent greenhouse gas with ozone reduction potential, is significantly influenced by microbial communities in drylands. However, our understanding of the biological mechanisms and processes behind N 2 O emissions in these areas is limited, despite the fact that they highly account for total gaseous nitrogen (N) emissions on Earth. Crop byproducts can be supplemented in livestock feeds to improve the utilization of resources and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We explored the mitigation potential of GHG emissions by supplementing crop byproducts in feeds based on a typical intensive dairy farm in China. Results showed that GHG emissions associated with production of forage were significantly decreased by 25.60 % when no GHG emissions were allocated to crop byproducts, and enteric methane emission was significantly decreased by 13.46 % on the basis of CO 2 eq, g/kg fat and protein corrected milk. The supplementation did not affect lactation performance, rumen microbiota and microbial enzymes at the gene level. Metabolomics analysis revealed changes in amino acid catabolism of rumen fluid, which were probably responsible for more propionate production. Monoculture is widely practiced to increase crop productivity, but long-term adaptation has drawbacks as it increases the depletion of soil nutrients and reduces soil quality, especially in dryland areas. Conversion from traditional maize monoculture to intercropping improves sustainable production. However, maize/peanut intercropping, especially rotation of planting strips impacts of maize/peanut intercropping in dryland on carbon (C) budgets and economic benefits remain unclear. In this study, a 5-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate the influence of maize/peanut intercropping with rotation of planting strips on soil health, indirect CO 2 -eq greenhouse gas emissions, and ecosystem C inputs. Four intercropping treatments viz. maize monoculture, peanut monoculture, maize/peanut intercropping, and maize/peanut rotation-intercropping were tested from 2018 to 2022. Maize/peanut rotation intercropping significantly improved the land equivalent ratio followed by intercropping and monoculture. Rotation-intercropping also improved economic benefits over intercropping and monoculture which were mainly associated with increased peanut yield where the border rows contributed the maximum, followed by the middle rows. Moreover, rotation-intercropping significantly increased the soil organic C and nitrogen (N) content. Rotation-intercropping decreased indirect CO 2 -eq greenhouse gas emissions and ecosystem C inputs by 3.11% and 18.04%, whereas increased ecosystem C outputs and net ecosystem C budget by 10.38% and 29.14%, respectively, over the average of monoculture. On average for intercropping and monoculture, rotation-intercropping increased ecosystem C emission efficiency for economic benefits by 51.94% and 227.27% in 2021 and 2022, respectively, showing the highest C utilization efficiency than other treatments. This study delves into the critical nexus between wastewater treatment, energy consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. Wastewater treatment is a linchpin of sustainable development, yet its energy-intensive processes contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. The research focuses on wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Mexico City (CDMX) and the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB), exploring the disparities between a developed country and a developing country. The study examines how factors such as water treatment technologies and electricity sources influence carbon emissions. The AMB exhibits superior performance by treating all wastewater, cogenerating energy from the biomass contained in the wastewater and generating 10% fewer emissions, in stark contrast to CDMX, which does not capture the CH 4 produced during water treatment, on top of only treating the water of 14% of the city's agglomeration. It underscores the critical implications of WWTP efficiency on climate change and progress toward UN Sustainable Development Goals. Excessive irrigation and nitrogen application have long seriously undermined agricultural sustainability in the North China Plain (NCP), leading to declining groundwater tables and intensified greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Developing low-input management practices that meet the growing food demand while reducing environmental costs is urgently needed. Here, we developed a novel nitrogen management strategy for a typical winter wheat-summer maize rotation system in the NCP under limited irrigation (wheat sowing irrigation only (W0) or sowing and jointing irrigation (W1)) and low nitrogen input (360 kg N ha -1 , about 70 % of traditional annual nitrogen input). Novel nitrogen management strategy promoted efficient nitrogen fertilizer uptake and utilization by both crops via optimization of nitrogen fertilizer allocation between the two crops, i.e., increasing nitrogen inputs to wheat (from 180 to 240 kg N ha -1 ) while reducing nitrogen inputs to maize (from 180 to 120 kg N ha -1 ). Three-year field study demonstrated that integrated management practices combining novel nitrogen management strategy with limited irrigation increased annual yields and PFPN by 1.9-5.7 %, and reduced TGE by 55-68 kg CO 2 -eq ha -1 and GHGI by 2.2-10.3 %, without any additional cost. With global population growth and climate change, food security and global warming have emerged as two major challenges to agricultural development. Plastic film mulching (PM) has long been used to improve yields in rain-fed agricultural systems, but few studies have focused on soil gas emissions from mulched rainfed potatoes on a long-term and regional scale. This study integrated field data with the Denitrification-Decomposition (DNDC) model to evaluate the impacts of PM on potato yields, greenhouse gas (GHG) and ammonia (NH 3 ) emissions in rainfed agricultural systems in China. We found that PM increased potato yield by 39.7 % (1505 kg ha -1 ), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions by 15.4 % (123 kg CO 2 eq ha -1 ), nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions by 47.8 % (1016 kg CO 2 eq ha -1 ), and global warming potential (GWP) by 38.9 % (1030 kg CO 2 eq ha -1 ), while NH 3 volatilization decreased by 33.9 % (8.4 kg NH 3 ha -1 ), and methane (CH 4 ) emissions were little changed compared to CK. Specifically, the yield after PM significantly increased in South China (SC), North China (NC), and Northwest China (NWC), with increases of 66.1 % (2429 kg ha -1 ), 44.1 % (1173 kg ha -1 ), and 43.6 % (956 kg ha -1 ) compared to CK, respectively. The increase in GWP and greenhouse gas emission intensity (GHGI) under PM was more pronounced in the Northeast China (NEC) and NWC regions, with respective increases of 57.1 % and 60.2 % in GWP, 16.9 % and 10.3 % in GHGI. While in the Middle and Lower reaches of the Yangtze River (MLYR) and SC, PM decreased GHGI with 10.2 % and 31.1 %, respectively. PM significantly reduced NH 3 emissions in all regions and these reductions were most significant in Southwest China (SWC), SCand MLYR, which were 41 %, 38.0 %, and 38.0 % lower than CK, respectively. In addition, climatic and edaphic variables were the main contributors to GHG and NH 3 emissions. In conclusion, it is appropriate to promote the use of PM in the MLYR and SC regions, because of the ability to increase yields while reducing environmental impacts (lower GHGI and NH 3 emissions). Methane (CH 4 ) emissions from manure management on livestock farms are a key source of greenhouse gas emissions in some regions and for some production systems, and the opportunities for mitigation may be significant if emissions can be adequately documented. We investigated a method for estimating CH 4 emissions from liquid manure (slurry) that is based on anaerobic incubation of slurry collected from commercial farms. Methane production rates were used to derive a parameter of the Arrhenius temperature response function, lnA', representing the CH 4 production potential of the slurry at the time of sampling. Results were used for parameterization of an empirical model to estimate annual emissions with daily time steps, where CH 4 emissions from individual sources (barns, outside storage tanks) can be calculated separately. A monitoring program was conducted in four countries, i.e., Denmark, Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands, during a 12-month period where slurry was sampled to represent barn and outside storage on finishing pig and dairy farms. Across the four countries, lnA' was higher in pig slurry compared to cattle slurry (p < 0.01), and higher in slurry from barns compared to outside storage (p < 0.01). In a separate evaluation of the incubation method, in-vitro CH 4 production rates were comparable with in-situ emissions. The results indicate that lnA' in barns increases with slurry age, probably due to growth or adaptation of the methanogenic microbial community. Using lnA' values determined experimentally, empirical models with daily time steps were constructed for finishing pig and dairy farms and used for scenario analyses. Annual emissions from pig slurry were predicted to be 2.5 times higher than those from cattle slurry. Changing the frequency of slurry export from the barn on the model pig farm from 40 to 7 d intervals reduced total annual CH 4 emissions by 46 %; this effect would be much less on cattle farms with natural ventilation. In a scenario with cattle slurry, the empirical model was compared with the current IPCC methodology. The seasonal dynamics were less pronounced, and annual CH 4 emissions were lower than with the current methodology, which calls for further investigations. Assessing the impact of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on agricultural soils is crucial for ensuring food production sustainability in the global effort to combat climate change. The present study delves to comprehensively assess GHG emissions in Cuba's agricultural soil and analyze its implications for rice production and climate change because of its rich agriculture cultivation tradition and diverse agro-ecological zones from the period of 1990-2022. In this research, based on Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach the empirical findings depicts that in short run, a positive and significant impact of 1.60 percent % in Cuba's rice production. The higher amount of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) levels improves photosynthesis, and stimulates the growth of rice plants, resulting in greater grain yields. On the other hand, rice production index raising GHG emissions from agriculture by 0.35 % in the short run. Furthermore, a significant and positive impact on rice production is found in relation to the farm machinery i.e., 3.1 %. Conversely, an adverse and significant impact of land quality was observed on rice production i.e., -5.5 %. The reliability of models was confirmed by CUSUM and CUSUM square plot. Diagnostic tests ensure the absence of serial correlation and heteroscedasticity in the models. Additionally, the forecasting results are obtained from the three machine learning models i.e. feed forward neural network (FFNN), support vector machines (SVM) and adaptive boosting technique (Adaboost). Through the % MAPE criterion, it is evident that FFNN has achieved high precision (91 %). With China being the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases and its aviation sector burgeoning, the environmental performance of Chinese airlines has global significance. Amidst rising demands for eco-friendly practices from both customers and regulators, the interplay between airport infrastructure and environmental performance becomes pivotal. This research offers an innovative methodology to gauge the environmental performance of Chinese airlines, emphasizing the distance traveled between airports using weighted additive utility functions. Leveraging neural networks, the study investigates the impact of various airport infrastructural characteristics on environmental performance. Noteworthy findings indicate that ground control measures, automatic information services at origin airports, surface concrete on runways at both ends, and a centerline lighting system in destination airports positively influence environmental performance. In contrast, longer and wider runways at origin airports, increased distances to control towers, and asphalt runways at destination airports adversely affect it. These insights not only underscore the importance of strategic infrastructure enhancements for reducing carbon footprints but also hold profound policy implications. While research on carbon productivity is growing rapidly, the role of structural change in green transition remains unexplored due to the scarcity of firm-level emission data. This study addresses this gap by utilizing unique register-based greenhouse gas emission data from Finland's energy-intensive manufacturing firms for 2000-2019. Applying a structural change productivity decomposition, we break down the sector's carbon productivity and green total factor productivity into four components: contributions from non-switching continuing firms, industry-switching continuing firms, the effects of entry and exit, and resource allocation. The findings highlight the important role of structural change in the sector's productivity. Non-switching continuing firms emerged as the key drivers of both carbon and green total factor productivity growth. The contribution of entry and exit was negative during the financial crisis, while inefficient resource allocation significantly hindered productivity growth throughout the study period. These findings emphasize the importance of public subsidies targeted at environmentally efficient firms to enhance their competitiveness under challenging market conditions. Feeding the world's population while minimising the contribution of agriculture to climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing modern society. This challenge is particularly pronounced for dairy production where the carbon footprint of products and the mitigation costs are high, relative to other food stuffs. This paper reviews a number of mitigation measures that may be adopted by dairy farmers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from their farms. A simulation model is developed to assess the cost-benefit of a range of mitigation measures. The model is applied to data from Ireland, a country with a large export-oriented dairy industry, for a range of farms including top, middle and bottom performing farms from a profitability perspective. The mitigation measures modelled included animal productivity, grass production and utilisation, better reproductive performance, early compact calving, reduced crude protein, decreased fertiliser N, protected urea, white clover, slurry tank cover and low emission slurry spreading (LESS). The results show that over half of the greenhouse gas abatement potential and most of the ammonia abatement potential were realised with cost-beneficial measures. Animal and feed-related measures that increased efficiency drove the abatement of GHG emissions. Low-emission slurry spreading was beneficial for the bottom and middle one-third of farms, while protected urea and reducing nitrogen use accounted for most of the ammonia abatement potential for the most profitable farms. Results showed that combining mitigation measures resulted in a decrease of 23%, 19%, and 12% in GHG emissions below 2020 levels for the bottom, middle, and top performing dairy farms, respectively. Certain nations have opted for stimulus-based regulations to curtail emissions, build a liveable, environmentally friendly setting, and work towards aspirational mitigation targets. New Zealand (NZ) prefers an Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) to taxation, mitigating emissions on one hand while retaining incentives for economic growth on the other. As a result, NZ has initiated a legal framework since 2008 to allow its economic sectors to engage in ETS and minimize emissions. Yet, selecting the appropriate sectors and effectively adjusting sector-specific regulations remain critical and complex challenges in the global design of ETS since both excessive and insufficient intervention can lead to inefficiencies in the system's functioning. Therefore, this study begins validating the NZ ETS's abatement potential regarding sectoral carbon intensity by executing the double machine learning techniques, consolidating the ETS efficacy that has robustly mitigated sectoral carbon intensity in NZ during 2006-2020. However, this conclusion seems invalid at the disaggregated level when focusing on forward-backward linkages, where NZ's input-output tables furnish a compelling scenario of sectoral dependencies and the products (residuals) they provide. Altogether, the regulatory requirements are either too strict or too lax, leaving out five of the 24 (as a whole) key sectors. Saline water has proven to be one of the alternative sources of freshwater for agricultural irrigation in water-scarce areas. However, the changes in farmland ecology caused by saline water irrigation remain unclear. In this study, six irrigation water salinities (CK: 1.3 dS m -1 , S1: 3.4 dS m -1 , S2: 7.1 dS m -1 , S3: 10.6 dS m -1 , S4: 14.1 dS m -1 , S5: 17.7 dS m -1 ) were set in a three-year (2019, 2021-2022) experiment to investigate their effects on soil environment and greenhouse gas emissions in cotton fields under long-term saline water irrigation. Results show that soil salinity in the same layer increased as increasing water salinity. Soil moisture of S3-S5 increased significantly by 4.99-12.94%. There was no significant difference in soil organic matter content between CK and S1. Saline water irrigation increased soil ammonium nitrogen content by 0.57-49.26%, while decreasing nitrate nitrogen content by 1.43-32.03%. Soil CO 2 and N 2 O emissions and CH 4 uptake were lower in S1-S5 than in CK at different cotton growth stages. In addition, saline water irrigation reduced the global warming potential by 6.93-53.86%. A structural equation model was developed to show that soil salinity, moisture, and ammonium nitrogen content were negatively correlated with global warming potential, while organic matter and nitrate nitrogen had positive effects on global warming potential. Electricity consumption and anaerobic reactions cause direct and indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within domestic sewage treatment systems (DSTSs). GHG emissions in DSTSs were influenced by the sewage quantity and the efficacy of treatment technologies. To address combined effects of these variables, this study presented an approach for identifying pathways for GHG mitigation within the DSTSs of cities under climate change and socio-economic development, through combining life cycle analysis (LCA) and the Hierarchical Archimedean copula (HAC) methods. The approach was innovative in the following aspects: 1) quantifying the GHG emissions of the DSTSs; 2) identifying the correlations among temperature changes, socioeconomic development, and domestic sewage quantity, and 3) predicting the future fluctuations in GHG emissions from the DSTSs. The effectiveness of the proposed approach was validated through its application to an urban agglomeration in the Pearl River Delta (PRD), China. To identify the potentials of GHG mitigation in the DSTSs, two pathways (i.e., general and optimized) were proposed according to the different technical choices for establishing facilities from 2021 to 2030. The results indicated that GHG emissions from the DSTS in the PRD were [3.01, 4.96] Mt CO 2 eq in 2021, with substantial contributions from Shenzhen and Guangzhou. Moreover, GHG emissions from the sewage treatment facilities based on Anaerobic-Anoxic-Axic (AAO) technology were higher than those based on other technologies. Under the optimized pathway, GHG emissions, contributed by the technologies of Continuous Cycle Aeration System (CASS) and Oxidation Ditch (OD), were the lowest. Through the results of correlation analysis, the impact of socioeconomic development on domestic sewage quantities was more significant than that of climate change. Domestic sewage quantities in the cities of the PRD would increase by 4.10%-28.38%, 17.14%-26.01%, and 18.15%-26.50% from 2022 to 2030 under three Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) 2.6, 4.5, and 8.5. These findings demonstrated that the capacities of domestic sewage treatment facilities in most cities of the PRD should be substantially improved from 0.12 to 2.99 times between 2022 and 2030. One of the key issues in manure management of livestock production is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) and air pollutant emissions, which lead to significant environmental footprint and human/animal health threats. This study provides a review of potentially efficacious technologies and management strategies that reduce GHG and air pollutant emissions during the three key stages of manure management in livestock production, i.e., animal housing, manure storage and treatment, and manure application. Several effective mitigation technologies and practices for each manure management stage are identified and analyzed in detail, including feeding formulation adjustment, frequent manure removal and air scrubber during animal housing stage; solid-liquid separation, manure covers for storage, acidification, anaerobic digestion and composting during manure storage and treatment stage; land application techniques at appropriate timing during manure application stage. The results indicated several promising approaches to reduce multiple gas emissions from the entire manure management. Removing manure 2-3 times per week or every day during animal housing stage is an effective and simple way to reduce GHG and air pollutant emissions. Acidification during manure storage and treatment stage can reduce ammonia and methane emissions by 33%-93% and 67%-87%, respectively and proper acid, such as lactic acid can also reduce nitrous oxide emission by about 90%. Shallow injection of manure for field application has the best performance in reducing ammonia emission by 62%-70% but increase nitrous oxide emission. The possible trade-off brings insight to the prioritization of targeted gas emissions for the researchers, stakeholders and policymakers, and also highlights the importance of assessing the mitigation technologies across the entire manure management chain. Inland shallow lakes are recognized as an important source of greenhouse gases (GHGs), and their contribution is expected to increase due to global eutrophication. The generation and release of GHGs involved multiple variables, leading to many uncertain potential factors. This study examined the emission characteristics of GHGs at the water-air interface in 12 shallow lakes categorized into four eutrophic levels in the Yangtze River basin. The average emission rates of CH 4 , CO 2 and N 2 O were 1.55, 3.43, 18.13 and 30.47 mg m -2 h -1 , 4.12, 14.64, 25.11 and 69.84 mg m -2 h -1 , and 0.2, 0.25, 0.43 and 0.79 mg m -2 day -1 in the oligotrophic, mesotrophic, eutrophic and hypereutrophic lakes, respectively. There were significant correlations between eutrophic levels and the emission rates of CH 4 and CO 2 (p < 0.05). Redundancy analysis and Mantel test were conducted to further examine the key factors influencing carbon emissions from eutrophic water. It was found that the presence of algae and nutrients in the overlying water played a crucial role in the release of GHGs, indicating the importance of ecosystem productivity in the carbon budget of the lake. In order to assess the bioavailability of organic matter, a new indicator called R (P/H) was proposed. This indicator represents the ratio of protein and humus-like components, which were obtained through EEMs-PARAFAC modeling. Work from home (WFH) creates work-life integration by moving work into traditional life at home, but its influence on residential greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions remains unclear. In this study, an activity-based bottom-up model was developed to analyze the time-use patterns (activity durations and timeline of a typical day) of participants under WFH and traditional home life and to quantify their residential GHG emissions. Under WFH, participants generated an average of 9.03 kg CO 2 e/person/day, primarily attributed to space heating and cooling, cooking, grooming, work, and watching TV and movies. Notably, the GHG footprints varied across groups (8.08-9.93 kg CO 2 e/person/day) due to different work and household responsibilities and leisure time and varied with climate region (4.99-10.63 kg CO 2 e/person/day) because of emission factors of electricity, space heating and cooling, and cooking. Compared with traditional life at home (10.06 kg CO 2 e/person/day), WFH participants spent less time on almost all major activities (especially sleeping and watching TV and movies) to focus on work, enabling an 11.34% (1.02 kg CO 2 e/person/day) mitigation of GHG emissions. The reductions also varied by group and climate region, mainly associated with laundry, cooking, and watching TV and movies. Opportunities to reduce GHG emissions under WFH lie in targeting key activities, balancing the time spent on various activities, and developing group- and spatial-specific strategies. This study provides a systematic and high-resolution estimation of residential GHG emissions under WFH and traditional home life, with a complete system boundary, activity-specific considerations, and countrywide understanding. Amid rising energy crises and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, designing energy efficient, GHG mitigation and profitable conservation farming strategies are pertinent for global food security. Therefore, we tested a hypothesis that no-till with residue retaining could improve energy productivity (EP) and energy use efficiency (EUE) while mitigating the carbon footprint (CF), water footprint (WF) and GHG emissions in rice-wheat double cropping system. We studied two tillage viz., conventional and conservation, with/without residue retaining, resulting as CT0 (puddled-transplanted rice, conventional wheat -residue), CTR (puddled-transplanted rice, conventional wheat + residue), NT0 (direct seeded rice, zero-till wheat -residue), and NTR (direct seeded rice, zero-till wheat + residue). The overall results showed that the NTR/NT0 had 34% less energy consumption and 1.2-time higher EP as compared to CTR/CT0. In addition, NTR increased 19.8% EUE than that of CT0. The grain yield ranged from 8.7 to 9.3 and 7.8-8.5 Mg ha -1 under CT and NT system, respectively. In NTR, CF and WF were 56.6% and 17.9% lower than that of CT0, respectively. The net GHG emissions were the highest (7261.4 kg CO 2 ha -1  yr -1 ) under CT0 and lowest (4580.9 kg CO 2 ha -1  yr -1 ) under NTR. Notably, the carbon sequestration under NTR could mitigate half of the system's CO 2 -eq emissions. China plays a crucial role in responding to global climate change. Provinces are the main sources of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in China's economic and social development. However, it is still unclear how to achieve dual-carbon goals by formulating and implementing local policies to adapt to climate change. In this study, we take Zhejiang Province in China as the research object, based on the LEAP (Low Emissions Analysis Platform) model to construct four social scenarios under different policies, comprehensively considering regional economic characteristics, population, and energy consumption patterns. The results show that to achieve Zhejiang Province's goal of carbon peaking by 2030 while maintaining steady economic growth, additional measures are required to reduce energy consumption intensity or improve the power generation structure. Otherwise, energy demand will increase to 228.06 million tonnes of coal equivalent and carbon emissions will be 487.76 million tonnes in 2050. Moreover, developing clean energy and promoting CCUS technology can continuously reduce carbon emissions to 293.59 and 210.76 million tonnes respectively. The economic viability of CCUS power generation is contingent upon the development of carbon taxes in the future. The field practices, including irrigation and fertilization, strongly affect greenhouse gas emissions and soil nutrient cycling from agriculture. Understanding the underlying mechanism of greenhouse gas emissions, soil nutrient cycling, and their impact factors (fungal diversity, network characteristics, soil pH, salt, and moisture) is essential for efficiently managing global greenhouse gas mitigation and agricultural production. By considering abundant and rare taxa, we determine the identities and relative importance of ecological processes that modulate the fungal communities and identify whether they are crucial contributors to soil nutrient cycling and greenhouse gas emissions. The research is based on a 4-year field fertigation experiment with low (300 kg/ha P 2 O 5 with 150 kg/ha urea) and high (600 kg/ha P 2 O 5 with 300 kg/ha urea) fertilization level and three irrigation levels, that is, low (200 mm), medium (300 mm), and high (400 mm). The α-diversity (richness and Shannon index) of fungal subcommunities was significantly higher under medium irrigation (300 mm) and low fertilization (300 kg/ha P 2 O 5 with 150 kg/ha urea) than under other treatments. Intermediate irrigation with low fertilization treatment yielded the most significant higher multinutrient cycling index and the lowest CO 2 and CH 4 emissions. The null model indicated that abundant taxa are mainly regulated by stochastic processes (dispersal limitation), and rare taxa are mainly regulated by environmental selection, especially by soil salinity. The co-occurrence network of rare taxa explained the changes in the entire fungal network stability. The abundant taxa played vital roles in regulating soil nutrient status, owing to the stronger association between their network and multinutrient cycling index. Furthermore, we have confirmed that soil moisture and fungal network stability are crucial factors affecting greenhouse gas emissions.
