Spatial conflicts of land use (SCLU) arise during land-use change, which causes an imbalance of land-use spatial patterns and negatively affects society, the economy, and ecology. Previous research has focused on identifying and measuring SCLU, with less attention on the negative effects. The incorporation of risk assessment methods to evaluate potential conflict risks has been limited. The current study presents methods for measuring SCLU and assessing potential conflict risks from the ecological environment perspective. The spatial comprehensive conflicts index and potential conflict risk index were used to identify and measure the SCLU and to assess and warn against potential conflict risks, respectively, based on a case study in the Ili River Valley in China. The impacts of terrain restriction and land-use change on the SCLU were explored. Results indicate that (1) the SCLU area in the Ili River Valley decreased by 2,608 km2 from 2010 to 2020, compared to the previous decade, the degree of conflict weakened, and the main body of the SCLU gradually shifted northwest. (2) The potential risk areas cover 20,268 km2 in 2020–2030 and are mainly distributed in the "Khorgas City–Huocheng County–Yining City–Yining County" group of towns, as well as along the Ili–Kunes rivers and in the ecological protection zone in the south of the Ili River Valley, which shows the clustering along the city and distribution along the river in the spatial pattern. (3) Topography had a significant impact on the SCLU, and the main types of land-use change in the severe-conflict zone were the reduction of grassland and the expansion of arable and built-up land. For future conflict mitigation in the Ili River Valley, cautioning against urban sprawl and safeguarding land ecological security is critical. Low-carbon transition in the non-electric energy sector, which includes transport and heating energy, is necessary for achieving the 2 °C target. Meanwhile, as non-electric energy accounts for over 60% of total water consumption in the energy supply sector, it is vital to understand future water trends in the context of decarbonization. However, few studies have focused on life-cycle water impacts for non-electric energy; besides, applying conventional LCA methodology to assess non-electric energy has limitations. In this paper, a Multi-Regional Hybrid Life-Cycle Assessment (MRHLCA) model is built to assess total CO 2 emissions and water consumption of 6 non-electric energy technologies – transport energy from biofuel and gasoline, heat supply from natural gas, biogas, coal, and residual biomass, within 7 major emitting economies. We find that a shift to natural gas and residual biomass heating can help economies reduce 14–65% CO 2 and save more than 21% water. However, developed and developing economies should take differentiated technical strategies. Then we apply scenarios from IMAGE model to demonstrate that if economies take cost-effective 2 °C pathways, the water conservation synergy for the whole energy supply sector, including electricity, can also be achieved. When evaluating climate policy, previous researchers tend to exaggerate positive employment benefits at aggregate level. Nevertheless, distributional employment at sectoral level is usually neglected, and consequently policy implementation may be impeded by the sectors with severe employment loss. Hence, distributional employment impacts of climate policy should be comprehensively studied. To achieve this target, in this paper, a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model is employed to simulate the Chinese nationwide Emission Trading Scheme (ETS). The CGE model results show that the ETS decreased total labor employment by approximately 3% in 2021, and then this negative impact will diminish to zero in 2024; the ETS will positively affect total labor employment in 2025–2030. The ETS increases labor employment in the electricity sectors and also agriculture, water, heat, and gas production sectors, as these sectors are complementary to the electricity sectors or do not have intensive use of electricity. In contrast, the ETS decreases labor employment in the sectors with intensive use of electricity, including the coal and petrol production, manufacturing, mining, construction, transport, and service sectors. Overall, a climate policy, which covers electricity generation only and is time-invariant, tends to have time-decreasing employment impacts. Because this policy increases labor employment in electricity generation from nonrenewable energy, it cannot help achieve low-carbon transition. Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP), as a plasticizer, is widely used and has caused many extreme soil contamination scenarios, posing potential risks to soil fauna. However, the toxic effects and mechanisms of DIBP on soil fauna remain unclear. In this study, earthworms (Eisenia fetida) were used as model animals to explore the subchronic toxicity of extreme DIBP soil exposure (300, 600, and 1200 mg/kg) for 28 days. The results showed that the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) in E. fetida were significantly increased during continuous DIBP exposure. In addition, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) were significantly inhibited while glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity was activated during continuous exposure. Integrated biological response (IBR) analysis showed that DIBP had positive dose-dependent toxicity and negative time-dependent toxicity to E. fetida , and SOD/CAT were selected as sensitive biomarkers. The molecular docking study found that DIBP could stably bind to SOD/CAT through hydrogen bonding, which further proved its sensitivity. This study provides primary data for ecological and environmental risk assessment of extreme dose DIBP soil pollution. Photocatalysis, as a sustainable and environmentally friendly green technology, has garnered widespread recognition and application across various fields. Especially its potential in environmental disinfection has been highly valued by researchers. This study commences with foundational research on photocatalytic disinfection technology and provides a comprehensive overview of its current developmental status. It elucidates the complexity of the interface reaction mechanism between photocatalysts and microorganisms, providing valuable insights from the perspectives of materials and microorganisms. This study reviews the latest design and modification strategies (Build heterojunction, defect engineering, and heteroatom doping) for photocatalysts in environmental disinfection. Moreover, this study investigates the research focuses and links in constructing photocatalytic disinfection systems, including photochemical reactors, light sources, and material immobilization technologies. It studies the complex challenges and influencing factors generated by different environmental media during the disinfection process. Simultaneously, a comprehensive review extensively covers the research status of photocatalytic disinfection concerning bacteria, fungi, and viruses. It reveals the observable efficiency differences caused by the microstructure of microorganisms during photocatalytic reactions. Based on these influencing factors, the economy and effectiveness of photocatalytic disinfection systems are analyzed and discussed. Finally, this study summarizes the current application status of photocatalytic disinfection products. The challenges faced by the synthesis and application of future photocatalysts are proposed, and the future development in this field is discussed. The potential for research and innovation has been further emphasized, with the core on improving efficiency, reducing costs, and strengthening the practical application of photocatalysis in environmental disinfection. Water resources in good quality guarantee the primary condition for the maintenance and development of the natural ecosystem and human society. Water quality status and health risk of the lake water bodies in the national nature reserve, the Yamdrok-tso basin, in the southern Tibetan Plateau are assessed by 25 water parameters including 12 heavy metal(loid)s. Results reveal that the lake water bodies possess relatively high pH (9.68), high concentrations of F (1.66 mg/L), Cu (13.92 μg/L), As (41.60 μg/L), Pb (26.69 μg/L), and U (19.53 μg/L), and a low value of dissolved oxygen (19.30%). The pollution indices (heavy metal pollution index of 0.88–22.88, heavy metal evaluation index of 0.18–3.75, and the degree of contamination of −8.82 to −5.25) demonstrate that the lake water bodies are in a low pollution level with respect to heavy metal(loid)s. The evaluation of water quality based on the fuzzy comprehensive assessment method suggests that 75.56% of the water samples meet the regulation of the China National Standard for water resources in national nature reserves. Health risk assessment shows that potential hazards exist on this region when the residents under long-term exposure to the lake water through oral and dermal pathways, of which children and adults are mostly exposed to As and F for non-carcinogenic and As for carcinogenic risks, especially for children. Biosystems used for volatile organic compound (VOC) control have slow re-acclimation after extended starvation. In this study, a gel-encapsuled microorganism biofilter (GEBF) for the treatment of VOCs was used for rapid recovery after starvation interruption. Another conventional perlite biofilter (BF) was used as a control. Results showed that GEBF and BF needed 3 and 6 days for fully recovery after short-term (6 days) starvation. For long-term (20 days) starvation, GEBF fully recovered the removal performance after 9 days, whereas BF recovered only 70% within the same period. Flow cytometry analysis indicated that GEBF presented better viability state of microbial population than that in BF under starvation. The average metabolic activity of microorganisms in GEBF remained a relatively high during and after starvation (0.0049 h−1). However, the average metabolic activity of microorganisms in BF decreased from 0.0042 h−1 before starvation to 0.0033 h−1 under starvation. Changes in the microbial community structure in GEBF and BF were investigated and compared by high-throughput sequencing and principal component analysis. Notably, the microbial community structure in the two biofilters showed different behavior. Chicken manure (CM) can pose a serious threat to environmental and human health, and need to be managed properly. The compost can effectively treat CM. However, there is limited research on the heavy metals and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during compost CM. In this study, the combined application of reactor and static composting (RSC) was used to produce organic fertilizer of CM (OCM), and heavy metals, ARGs and bacterial community structure was investigated. The results show that RSC could be used to produce OCM, and OCM meet the National organic fertilizer standard (NY/T525-2021). Compared to the initial CM, DTPA-Cu, DTPA-Zn, DTPA-Pb, DTPA-Cr, DTPA-Ni and DTPA-As in OCM decreased by 40.83%, 23.73%, 34.27%, 38.62%, 16.26%, and 43.35%, respectively. RSC decreased the relative abundance of ARGs in CM by 84.06%, while the relative abundance of sul1 and ermC increased. In addition, the relative abundance and diversity of ARGs were mainly influenced by the bacterial community, with Actinobacteria , Firmicutes , and Proteobacteria becoming the dominant phyla during composting, and probably being the main carriers and dispersers of most of the ARGs. Network analyses confirmed that Gracilibacillus , Lactobacillus , Nocardiopsis , Mesorhizobium and Salinicoccus were the main potential hosts of ARGs, with the main potential hosts of sul1 and ermC being Mesorhizobium and Salinicoccus. The passivation and physicochemical properties of heavy metals contribute to the removal of ARGs, with sul1 and ermC being affected by the toal heavy metals. Application of RSC allows CM to produce mature, safe organic fertilizer after 32 d and reduces the risk of rebound from ARGs, but the issues of sul1 and ermC gene removal cannot be ignored. • Composting reduces proportion of biologically effective utilization of heavy metals. • The removal of total ARGs during composting was 84.06%. • RSC reduces the risk of ARGs rebounding. • Sul1 and ermC are the main ARGs to be controlled. China's 2060 carbon neutrality goal has significant implications for energy, water, and land systems. However, the multi-sector dynamics among China's energy-water-land system have rarely been examined explicitly. This study adopts an integrated assessment framework to simulate China's energy-water-land system co-evolution under alternative carbon neutrality scenarios and climate impacts. Results show that although the net zero emission target provides the incentive for the energy system to move away from fossil fuels, total water withdrawal will increase due to the deployment of nuclear, bioenergy, and coal power plants with carbon capture and storage. Diversifying the negative emission technologies, by leveraging direct air capture technology, can alleviate the potential water stress and land use conflicts, which would otherwise be exacerbated by large-scale deployment of afforestation and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage. Northwest and northeast regions of China are the hotspots experiencing water withdrawal increases, while Bohai Rim and coastal regions are identified to experience fierce land competition. Organic rice farming is a sustainable rice cultivation system that eliminates chemical inputs and has the potential to reduce environmental impacts. This study aims to: 1) evaluate and compare the carbon footprint intensity and the value of carbon sequestration ecosystem services (VCSES) between organic rice farming (OF) and conventional rice farming (CF) and 2) estimate the impact of climate change on soil organic carbon (SOC), rice yield, and VCSES of two farming types in Phichit province, Thailand. The results showed that the carbon footprint intensity in OF and CF were significantly different with −0.13 and 0.82 kg CO 2 eq kg−1 rice yield, respectively. The differences in SOC stocks (ΔSOCS) were more significant in OF with the increase of 1107.6 kg C ha−1 year−1 (4061.2 kg CO 2 eq ha−1 year−1), while the ΔSOCS value in CF was 625 kg C ha−1 year−1 (2291.7 kg CO 2 eq ha−1 year−1). The VCSES in OF (541,196 US$ ha−1 year−1) was nearly two times higher than in CF (305,388 US$ ha−1 year−1). Under future climate change, rice yields of both farming types are expected to increase under Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP6.0, and it will decline under RCP8.5. The SOC and VCSES values are predicted to increase, except under RCP8.5. The dramatic declines can be found from the near future (2020–2039) to the very far future (2080–2099) period. Our finding indicates that even though climate change will have negative effects on SOC and VCSES, the OF will have less impact compared with CF. The expansion of road networks in emerging economies such as China causes significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This development is conflicting with China's commitment to achieve carbon neutrality. Thus, there is a need to better understand life cycle emissions of road infrastructure and opportunities to mitigate these emissions. Existing impact studies of roads in developing countries do not address recycled materials, improved pavement maintenance, or pavement-vehicle interaction and electric vehicle (EV) adoption. Combining firsthand information from Chinese road construction engineers with publicly available data, this paper estimates a comprehensive account of GHG emissions of the road pavement network to be constructed in the next ten years in the Shandong province in Northern China. Further, we estimate the potential of GHG emission reductions achievable under three scenario sets: maintenance optimization, alternative pavement material replacement, and EV adoption. Results show that the life cycle GHG emissions of highways and Class 1–4 roads to be constructed in the next 10 years amount to 147 Mt CO2-eq. Considering the use phase in our model reveals that it is the dominant stage in terms of emissions, largely due to pavement-vehicle interaction. Vehicle electrification can only moderately mitigate these emissions. Other stages, such as materials production and road maintenance and rehabilitation, contribute substantially to GHG emissions as well, highlighting the importance of optimizing the management of these stages. Surprisingly, longer, not shorter maintenance intervals, yield significant emission reductions. Another counter-intuitive finding is that thicker and more material-intensive pavement surfaces cause lower emissions overall. Taken together, optimal maintenance and rehabilitation schedules, alternative material use, and vehicle electrification provide GHG reduction potentials of 11%, 4%–16% and 2%–6%, respectively. • Road construction implies significant amounts of GHG emissions. • China's road expansion plans are at odds with its target of GHG neutrality. • We assess GHG emissions of Shandong's roads to be constructed through 2030. • We combine life cycle assessment based on primary data with a new optimization model. • Individual mitigation measures can reduce life cycle GHG emissions by up to 16%. Coordinating the coercion of human activities to the ecosystem is a continuous strategic concern. A practical way to conceptualize socioeconomic development and link it to ecosystem response is urgently needed. This study proposed a two-staged method to reveal the threats concealed in socioeconomic development and show the return of water ecosystem services to regulation measures. Eight threat indexes referring to scale, structure and efficiencies of industrial, agriculture and domestic sectors were designed to assess the threats caused by unsustainable development features, while four indexes for evaluating water supply, habitat provision, regulation and quality purification service of ecosystem were set up. For each threat index, the evaluation result is a relative value derived from comparison with a reasonable level. The major threats could be screened out by ranking threat indexes, so that unreasonable development dimension could be identified and subsequent regulation scheme be prepared. On this basis, with the targeted adjustment of socioeconomic development, corresponding improvements in water ecosystem could be expected and quantified. In the case study of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei District, the most remarkable threats include production inefficiency of the industrial sector and oversized population, of which degrees of deviation from reasonable levels exceed 70%. When all development dimensions were dragged to the suggested levels, the habitat provision and water supply service would witness the largest progress among four services, with the values rising from 0.49 to nearly 1. This method helps discover the critical defect of socioeconomic development in terms of ecosystem response and facilitate the decision maker to establish more sustainable initiatives. Cities play a key role in making carbon emission reduction targets achievable and tackling air pollution. Using Guangzhou city as a case, this paper explored the air quality and health co-benefits of peaking carbon dioxide emissions under three scenarios and developed an integrated assessment framework by combining a local air pollutant emission inventory, an atmospheric chemistry transport model, and a health assessment model. The results showed that SO 2 , PM 10 , and PM 2.5 could achieve larger emission reductions than NH 3 , VOCs, and NOx among all the scenarios we examined. Under the enhanced peaking scenario with the most stringent mitigation strategies, Guangzhou could meet the local ambient air quality standard for PM 2.5 (34 μg/m3), with the most reduction observed in the annual average PM 2.5 concentration (28.4%) and related premature deaths (17.08%), compared with the base year 2015. We also identified hotspot grids, which were areas with high concentrations of carbon emissions, high concentrations of air pollution and poor air quality in Guangzhou. This paper argues for an efficient pollution tax rate system that reflects the differentiation of marginal health damages of the individual emission sources. Although China is the first country in the world to launch a regionally differentiated pollution tax rate program, due to the absence of marginal damage estimation, whether this policy is efficient and equitable remains unknown. In this paper, we build an Integrated Assessment Model to measure the marginal damage of SO2, NOx and PM2.5 emitted from 38 coal-fired power plants in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, and evaluate the policy performance of tax rate systems with different differentiation magnitudes. Results show that the spatial variations are huge, the range of marginal health damages of coal-fired power plants in the BTH region between the lowest and highest emission source is $2375 to $33245 per ton for SO2, $307 to $4984 per ton for NOx, and $11513 - $163126 per ton for PM2.5. Shifting from the uniform tax rate system to the current partially differentiated tax rate system will increase the total health benefits by 51.6% but with some regions worse-off than the uniform tax rate system. If we incorporate the source-specific variations of marginal health damages into the tax rate system, such a fully differentiated tax rate system will further increase the total health benefits of current partially differentiated tax rate system by 43.1% with every region better-off. Furthermore, even though the policy benefits of both differentiated tax rate systems are much more unequally distributed than uniform tax rates, their impacts on environmental inequalities are better than the uniform tax rate system. Because uniform tax rate systems do not offset the original inequalities of environmental health burdens while differentiated tax rate systems achieve this buy efficiently allocate mitigation targets among regions with different burdens.
