Abstract

Cross-categorization occurs when individuals are evaluated based on their membership in multiple social groups. This study indicates that although people positively perceive others from the same social categories, supportive feedback on evaluations and positive affect reduces the intergroup bias.

Abstract

An analysis of the measurement, development and effects of subtyping on stereotype changes reveals that more changes occur when stereotype-disconfirming information comes from a scattering of information rather than a concentration. When subtyping occurs, or is reinforced, stereotype change may be impeded. The pattern and number of subtypes influence and prevent stereotype changes and homogeneity of the target group may not necessarily lead to a change in a stereotype.

The experimental analysis of the influence of majority and minority on the attitude change shows that behavioral intensions and behavior is more attitude-consistent under minority influence than under the majority influence. The latter is chiefly due to non-systematic processing.

Abstract

The present research examined the role that level of abstraction might play in attitude function by monitoring the symbolic and instrumental functions of feelings towards different categories of people. It is found that attitudes towards abstract groups are more symbolic than that towards specific targets.
