Objective: To determine the association between vaccination status and mortality among critically ill patients admitted in a dedicated Covid hospital of Tripura who required invasive mechanical ventilation. Material and Methods: This study was conducted at a dedicated Covid hospital of Tripura for a period of six months, i.e., from June 2021 to November 2021. A total of 304 patients were enrolled for this study. Baseline epidemiological, radiological data along with other information like heart rate, pulse rate, oxygen saturation (SpO2), etc., were collected through patient record sheet in all cases during hospitalization. Statistical analysis was done by using SPSS 25 version. Results: Admission and mortality rates in hospital and advanced oxygen support like bi‑level positive airway pressure (BiPAP), high‑flow nasal cannula (HFNOC), and ventilator use incidences were higher in non‑vaccinated patients (17.1%) in comparison to double‑dose‑vaccinated (0.98%) and single‑dose (2.3%)‑vaccinated patients. Conclusion: This retrospective data analysis of Covid‑19 positive patients admitted in the dedicated Covid Hospital of Tripura suggests that severe infection, need for invasive and non‑invasive ventilation, and death were significantly less in the vaccinated patients as compared to the vaccine‑naive one. Aim: Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is defined as yellowish discoloration of the skin, conjunctive, and sclera from the elevated serum or plasma bilirubin in the newborn. The standard of care for the management of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is phototherapy to prevent long-term neurological sequelae. The aim of this study was to ascertain the predictability of significant rebound hyperbilirubinemia (SRH) in neonates after phototherapy and the factors associated with it. Materials and Methods: Neonates ≥ 35 weeks of gestation, who received treatment for hyperbilirubinemia and admitted in our hospital from 15th of March 2019 to 15th of September 2020 were enrolled after taking parental consent. SRH was defined as bilirubin levels crossing the treatment threshold within 72 hours of phototherapy termination. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify the predictability of SRH. Results: Out of 400 neonates treated with phototherapy, 10% developed SRH. Prematurity (Gestational age < 37 weeks), low birth weight (Birth weight < 2000 gram), ABO and Rh incompatibility, Glucose-6-phophate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD) deficiency, sepsis, and longer duration of primary phototherapy were found to be significantly associated with rebound hyperbilirubinemia. The probability of SRH increases for all American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) risk categories as the gestational age decreases and total serum bilirubin at the stoppage of phototherapy increases. Conclusions: The presence of risk factors should be taken into account while planning discharge and follow-up of neonates admitted for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia to prevent long-term complication of bilirubin neurotoxicity. Introduction: The burden of hypertension is expected to double by 2025 and adherence to treatment has a key role in disease outcome. The World Health Organization defines adherence as the extent to which a person's behaviour of taking medication, following a diet and/or exceeding life-style changes, corresponds with the agreed recommendations of health care providers. The study tries to assess the level of adherence to medication and life-style modifications in hypertensive patients. Materials and Methods: It is a cross-sectional study among patients attending urban health centres of a teaching hospital. The study population included all hypertensive patients above 30 years. Based on the prevalence of non-adherence to hypertensive medication, 70% of the sample size is calculated as 182. A Morisky medication adherence scale is used to find adherence to treatment. Life-style modification was also assessed. Scoring was done based on their adherence to treatment and life-style modifications and quantified. Results: The mean age of the study population was 55 years (38–80 years). In total, 58.33% were illiterate and 21% were retired from work. Around 87.5% had to spend money on medication. Mean weight, height, hip and waist circumference was 66 kg, 157 cm, 108 cm and 100 cm, respectively. Mean BMI was 26.6. Prevalence of good adherence to medication was 129 (70.83%) and that of good life-style modifications was 127 (70.17%). Conclusion: The adherence to medication and life-style modification was satisfactory. Family physicians have a key role in Non communicable diseases (NCD) management and should focus on ongoing education programmes for treatment adherence and life-style modifications at a community level, and grass-root level workers should conduct regular follow-up activities. A high seroprevalence of various transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) in donated blood is the main safety concern, especially in low- and middle-income countries. As per the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation, all blood donations must be tested for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), Treponema pallidum infection, and malaria, which mainly comprises the major bulk of TTIs. Aims: The purpose of this study is to observe the seroprevalence of hepatitis C virus and Treponema pallidum infection over the period of 5 years in blood donors of our blood center along with their epidemiological determinants with respect to age, sex, residence, occupation, and type of donors. Materials and Methods: Retrospective study was conducted for the period of 5 years, from 1st January 2017 to December 2021, estimating the seroprevalence of hepatitis C and Treponema pallidum infection in the blood donors along with their epidemiological determinants. Results: Out of 19,689 donations in 5 years, 690 (3.50%) units were positive for transfusion-transmissible infections with 1.67% donors seropositive for HCV, 1.23% for Treponema pallidum infection, 0.42% for HBV, and 0.18% for HIV. The prevalence of TTIs was found to be highest in 2020 (4.52%) and least in 2017 (2.57%). Out of a total of 330 HCV cases detected in 5 years, 84.85% of cases were seen in voluntary donors. Rural donors constituted 71.21% of cases. The majority of cases were seen in the age group of 18–30 years, i.e., 61.82%, and a maximum number of cases were seen in the farmers (31.21%), followed by laborers and construction workers (21.21%). Out of a total of 242 cases of Treponema pallidum infection, 84.29% were seen in voluntary blood donors. Demographic data showed 70.24% of cases in rural donors. Occupational data revealed a maximum number of cases in farmers (34.29%), followed by laborers (21.90%). Conclusion: Higher seroprevalence of HCV and Treponema pallidum infection in our region as compared with other areas is a matter of great concern about the growing infection rate of these in our area. Introduction: Diabetes is a common non-communicable disease in the world. Diabetic foot ulcer is a common complication of diabetes mellitus. Awareness and practice of foot self-care play a major role in the prevention of complications due to diabetic neuropathy. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among diabetic patients from Sep 2022 to Feb 2023. A semi-structured questionnaire containing four parts including socio-demographic including clinical details, questions related to knowledge and practice of foot self-care, and clinical examination was used. Ten grams monofilament and 128 Hz tuning fork were used to assess the sensation of the foot. Results: A total of 211 patients were included. The average age was found to be 58.4 ± 10.0 years and the majority were females (64.0%). The mean percentage score of knowledge on diabetes and foot self-care was found to be 59.6 ± 27.5 and 55.1 ± 11.9, respectively. Participants with low knowledge scores and those who do not engage in regular physical activity had significant poor foot care practices. The majority (54.5%) of the participants had at least one of the clinical problems related to diabetic foot. The most common problem was found to be heel fissures (29.4%), followed by deformed nails (15.2%), callus (5.2%), toe web infection (3.3%), and ulcer (2.8%). Monofilament test and vibration was not detectable in 12.3% and 15.2%, respectively. Conclusion: More than half of the participants were found to have good diabetic foot self-care practices. Background: Meningitis can be attributed to bacterial, fungal, or viral agents. In this study, we demonstrate the common bacterial agents causing meningitis along with their antibiotics susceptibility pattern in patients of all age groups. Material and Methods: This retrospective, observational study was carried out in the Department of Microbiology with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples collected from November 2019 to May 2022. We collected 1986 nonrepeat CSF samples from clinically suspected patients of bacterial meningitis, and clinical information about the patients was extracted from the hospital information system. Results: Out of the 1986 CSF samples included in our study, 150 (7.55%) were found to be positive on bacterial culture. Most of our patients were in the age group of 0-20 years. Common clinical manifestations observed in our patients were: high-grade fever, 87 patients (58%); severe headache, 126 patients (84%); neck rigidity, 47 patients (31.3%); altered mental status, 76 patients (50.7%) and photophobia, 83 patients (55.3%). The most commonly isolated bacteria was Acinetobacter species (30%). The mean length of hospitalization (37.76 ± 25.30), the mean total cell count, high levels of protein (mg/dl) and low levels of glucose (mg/dl) of CSF were statistically significant in meningitis caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria. Conclusion: We recognized the spectrum of pathogens causing meningitis at our center along with the antibiotic resistance pattern to guide and facilitate early treatment by primary health care professionals and family medicine practitioners. Introduction: Bile is deemed a sterile fluid, with the presence of clinical conditions like cholelithiasis, cholecystitis, previous biliary interventions, biliary strictures, and so on, leading to bile stasis, and increases the chances of bacteriobilia. In this study, we recognize the bacterial spectrum of microorganisms isolated from bile samples, diagnostic parameters, and antibiotic sensitivity patterns. Methods: A retrospective observational study was carried out by compiling data from the hospital information system of a tertiary care center from 2021 to 2022 to evaluate biliary infections in patients who underwent surgical procedures related to the biliary tract and associated organs. Results: A total of 234 patients' bile samples were included in our study. The mean age of patients was 48.04 ± 14.74 years, with more patients below the age of 65 years among those with infected bile samples. One hundred and sixty-three (163/234, 69.66%) patients infected by 209 pathogenic microorganisms were recognized. The most common microorganism isolated was Escherichia coli (83/209, 39.71%), followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (37/209, 17.7%). Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella pneumoniae isolate owed to more than 90% penicillin, extended-spectrum beta-lactamase, carbapenem, and fluoroquinolone resistance among all isolates. Length of hospital stay, malignant obstruction, and chronic kidney disease were identified as statistically significant risk factors that lead to the isolation of multi-drug-resistant isolates from bile culture. Conclusion: We recognized the spectrum of pathogens causing biliary tract infections at our center along with the antibiotic resistance pattern to guide and facilitate prompt and appropriate treatment by primary health care professionals and family medicine practitioners. Background: Osteoporosis is a progressive bone disease characterized by a reduction in bone mass and density, leading to bone fragility and an increased risk of sustaining fractures. Several studies have shown that the risk for osteoporosis increases with age and after menopause. Methods: A cross-sectional study was undertaken of 422 postmenopausal women at the Family Medicine Clinic of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH). Variables such as socio-demographic characteristics, anthropometric indices, and lifestyle habits of participants were assessed. In addition, bone mineral density was measured using a validated portable dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scanner. The results of the bone mineral density were analyzed based on T-scores. Results: The mean age of the study subjects was 59.8± ±6.4 years, while the mean age at menopause was 50.15 ± 4.1 years. The majority of the subjects were obese (41.5%), while the prevalence of osteoporosis and osteopenia was 15.1% and 30.6%, respectively. The use of oral steroids was associated with osteoporosis (P < 0.05). Conclusion: We recommend regular bone mineral density screening of postmenopausal women at the primary care level for early diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis to prevent fragility fractures. Background: A teaching hospital or medical college may help provide better health care delivery to the people of the vicinity. Hence, building new medical colleges and upgrading existing hospitals to teaching hospitals are being implemented in India. Objective: This study aimed to observe the current distribution of medical colleges in Indian states and find correlation with area, population, and net state domestic product (NSDP). Methods: We collected data from public domain websites provided by government agencies. The State-wise number of government and private medical colleges and their annual intake were obtained from the National Medical Commission website. The state-wise number of medical colleges, geographical area, and population were calculated as the percentage of total Indian colleges, area, and population, respectively. Spearman's correlation was calculated to find any correlation of colleges and annual intake versus parameters such as area, population, and NSDP. Results: India has a total of 612 [321 (52.45%) government-run and 291 (47.55%) private] medical colleges. Tamil Nadu (70), Uttar Pradesh (67), Karnataka (63), Maharashtra (62), and Telangana (34) are the top five states with 296 (48.37%) medical colleges. States and union territories such as Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana have higher medical colleges, and states such as Assam, Bihar, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh have lower medical colleges when compared with their population percentages. There was significant positive correlation of number of medical colleges with area (rs = 0.769, P < 0.0001), population (rs = 0.91, P < 0.0001), and NSDP (rs = 0.91, P < 0.0001). Conclusion: The current distribution of medical colleges in India is clustered over some states. Although geographical area and population are major predictors of medical colleges in Indian states, a more population-based balanced distribution of medical colleges would help distribute quality health care to the majority of the population. Background: Rhino-orbito-cerebral-mucormycosis (ROCM) associated with COVID-19 infection was at its peak during and immediately after the second wave of the pandemic in India during 2021. Many of the risk factors were implicated in the development of this deadly fungal infection, when there was a sudden surge of cases, especially who had a history of COVID-19 infection. Objectives: The objective of the study was to describe the characteristic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in invasive mucormycosis and to evaluate the extent and severity of invasive mucormycosis. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was carried out for 4 months which included 60 patients who underwent MRI using a Siemens Avanto 1.5 Tesla scanner. During our study, 68 cases were selected based on clinicoradiological features suspected of ROCM. However, 8 patients were excluded on the basis of exclusion criteria as either there was no definitive evidence of COVID infection or were proven to be negative for mucormycosis on microbiological examination. Results: On the basis of the spectrum of MRI findings, post-COVID-19 related ROCM was broadly categorized into three stages. Out of total of 60 patients, the disease was localized to the nasal and paranasal sinus region (Stage I) in 7 patients (11.66%), extending to adjacent extrasinus orofacial soft tissue structures (Stage II) in 36 patients (60%), and intracranial extension of disease (Stage III) was seen in 17 patients (28.33%). Conclusion: In post-COVID-19 patients presenting with clinical features suspected of ROCM, MRI imaging helps in early diagnosis and staging/severity of ROCM, so that timely intervention can be planned to reduce mortality as well as morbidity. Introduction: India accounts for approximately half of the worldwide snakebite deaths. It is often a neglected public health problem and particularly in Jharkhand region where medical facilities are limited. Epidemiological and clinical profile-related studies are scarce. The present study aims to assess the epidemiological profile and clinical features of snakebites encountered in a tertiary-care teaching hospital at Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, India. Aims and Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the clinical profile, outcome and epidemiological factors of snakebite cases, admitted to a tertiary care hospital in Jamshedpur. Material and Methods: This was a retrospective study from 2014 to 2021 wherein a total of 427 snakebite patients were admitted and had received treatment for snakebite at a tertiary-care teaching hospital at Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. All patients who reported with a history of snakebite were included in this study. The demographic and clinical details of each case were obtained and analysed. Result: A total of 427 snakebite cases were admitted to the hospital during the study period. The victims were predominantly males. Majority of the bite cases encountered were from rural areas and were in the second quarter of the year. The site of the bite was largely on the lower limb and the upper limb had fewer bites. The Glasgow Coma Scale was normal in those who presented early. Acute kidney injury, neutrophilic leucocytosis and deranged liver enzymes were associated with bad prognosis. Timely intervention with anti-snake venom offered good result. Conclusion: We had more male patients (69.55%), belonging to rural areas (67.91%), more bites in lower limbs and more cases in the second quarter of the year. Mortality rate was 0.7%. Background: Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are important cause of morbidity and mortality. Despite its known importance, rate and quality (completeness score) of ADR reporting is not satisfactory. The objective of this study was to analyze pattern and completeness score of ADRs during past five-years. Material and Methods: In this retrospective study, ADRs reported between 2017 to 2021 were analyzed according to year, gender, age-group, pharmacological class and department. The completeness score of ADRs was calculated. The number of sensitization programs conducted over 5 years and its impact on the completeness score was also evaluated. Results: A total of 104 ADRs were reported among 61 (58.6%) female and 43 (41.4%) male patients. Adults (18-65 years) comprised the most affected age group, accounting for 82 (79%) patients. Out of all, 35.5% ADRs were reported in 2018, whereas 27% were reported during 2021. Except during 2017, percentage of females with ADRs was more. Department of pulmonary medicine and dermatology contributed to maximum extent in ADR reporting. Antibiotics [23 (22.11%)], antitubercular drugs (AKT) [21 (20.19%)], and vaccines [13 (12.4%)] represented the most common agents with which ADRs were reported. ADR reporting was very low in 2017 (4/104). Percentage improvement in completeness score in 2021 vs. 2018 was 11.95% (P < 0.05). Positive trend in the improvement of average completeness score with number of sensitization programs was observed. Conclusion: Incidence of ADRs was more common in females. AKT and antimicrobials are commonly implicated in ADRs. Increase in awareness of ADR reporting through sensitization programs can help to improve rate and quality of reporting. Introduction: Government runs teaching hospitals to impart a high-quality medical education to budding medicos and paramedical students in training. The experiences these trainees at various tenure positions get then and there shape their worldview for rest of the life and have an indelible impression. The Covid-19 pandemic disrupted all the routines at the hospitals around the world—including ours—and we make an attempt to measure it in one dimension in this study. Materials and Methods: We obtained attendance data of patients at out patient department and in patient department of our hospital. During the pandemic for a certain duration offline (physical) registrations were closed and they were attended only by online ones. Hence that data (actually a part of it) got captured electronically and we analyzed it to get an idea of the traversed course of the scourge. Results: When the pandemic surged during the spring and summer of 2021, our hospital was turned into a Covid facility. Hence average routine attendance of patients got reduced to a significant extent, elective surgeries/interventions and procedures were postponed and this data is reflected in an electronic system, perhaps making a long-lasting effect on the budding trainees. This fact needs to be realized so as to take appropriate action. Conclusion: We need to realize that the effects of the viral communicable disease may be enduring, not only for the infected patients and their families but also for those who learn on those patients. Therefore, the transmissible diseases disabled not only our society, economy, and health care services when they ascended but pedagogy too. Background: Poisoning has been one of the greatest medical emergencies from the dawn of human civilization, posing threat to mankind. Tripura being a seven sister state of Northeast India have a unique topography, diverse ethnic groups, cross-cultural food habits, agriculture, and a horticulture-based economy that draws some distinctive type of poisoning threats compared to the rest of the Indian subcontinent. The present study was carried out to find out the epidemiological factors, toxicological profiles, and clinical outcomes of patients after consumption of poison. Methods: A cross-sectional study on 212 patients with a complaint of poisoning was conducted in a teaching hospital in Tripura, India, for 2 years, and the data were analyzed by using SPSS-15 (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) software. Results: Out of 212 participants, males from lower socioeconomic status, farmers by occupation, and belonging to the age group of 21–30 years predominated other categories. Organophosphorus compounds were majorly ingested (38.7%). Suicide was the most common manner of poisoning (62.73%). The majority of the patients (75%) died during treatment, 39.15% of patients died in the initial 24 hours and 43.87% of the patients had severe life-threatening symptoms [grade 3 of poison severity score (PSS)] during the first 72 hours of hospital admission. A Spearman rho value of −0.740 and a P value <0.001 were found while establishing a relationship between survival time and PSS. Conclusion: Poisoning by any agents and means produces adverse effects on the human body which further influences the clinical outcome. Therefore, proper knowledge and attention regarding its clinico-toxico-epidemiological profile, accurate and timely diagnosis, and satisfactory management and prevention strategies are necessary. People with diabetes will have some coexisting mental illness most of the time and its evaluation and management are essential for the well-being of the person. With this background, the Global Mental Health Assessment Tool (GMHAT) app was used to screen for mental illness among type 2 diabetes mellitus patients attending a tertiary care hospital in Mysore, India. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 100 patients who were on treatment for type 2 diabetes for at least 6 months from the Out-Patient Department of KR Hospital, Mysore. Interviews were conducted using a structured GMHAT. Data were entered in MS Excel and analysed using SPSS version 21.0. Chi-square, Independent T-test/Mann--Whitney tests were used to investigate associations between the variables. Results: The mean age of the study participants was 48.8 ± 11.6 years. Among the 100 diabetic patients, 39% (n = 39) had mental illness and among the 39 subjects, 21% had depression, 14% had anxiety disorder and 4% suffered from organic disorder. Apart from diabetes, 29, 17, 13, 27, 23 and 20% had hypertension, chronic kidney disease, liver disease, retinopathy, neuropathy and nephropathy, respectively, as comorbid conditions. Conclusion: There is a higher prevalence of mental illness in patients with diabetes mellitus. The prevalence rate increases with an increase in the chronicity of diabetes. Introduction: The mortality from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and the severity of it vary among populations. There is a dearth of research on epidemiology and clinical outcomes in central Indian populations with COVID-19. Our aim was to provide an analysis of all hospitalized mortality among patients with COVID-19 infection in a tertiary care hospital of Chhattisgarh in central India. This analysis helped us to know the severity predictors for mortality and in future will help the authorities to formulate a plan to decrease the mortality in the epidemic or uncertain ongoing pandemic. Methodology: This was a retrospective observational study using the hospital-based record of multi-disciplinary teaching hospital in Chhattisgarh, India. All COVID-19 reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction-positive patients who were declared dead or died during the course of treatment from April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021 were included in the study. In-hospital mortality was the primary outcome of interest. In secondary analysis, age and gender distribution, co-morbidity, length of stay, and the cause of death were also investigated. Results: A total of 7495 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 were enrolled in the study, of whom 762 (10.16%) died in the hospital with COVID-19 as the primary cause of death. The majority of the patients were more than 60 years of age (45.7%). A total of 416 (54.4%) of the deceased patients were having co-morbidity with diabetes (13.4%), hypertension (16.4%), or both (24.4%). The majority of the patients who succumbed had a hospital stay of less than a week (≤7) (68.5%). More than half of the patients (58.3%) who expired had referred and reported to the hospital in the second or third week of illness. The respiratory system involvement was the dominant contributor of death with pneumonia (78.8%) being the most common cause, followed by acute respiratory distress syndrome (62.2%). 13.6% of expired patients had multiple system involvement, and 11.2% had sepsis as well. Conclusion: Mortality in COVID-19 patients was associated with advanced age, co-morbidities such as diabetes and hypertension, and delay in hospitalization. Background: With the impending threat of future COVID-19 waves, it is imperative that teaching hospitals develop, implement, and evaluate a systematic training program to render HCW elastic in delivering COVID-19 related services. We present our experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating a sustainable and scalable COVID-19 patient management training package for healthcare workers. Materials and Methods: A mixed-methods study design was used. Rapid assessment to understand the need of the trainees and identify the available resources was done followed by planning of the training module and its implementation. The program was evaluated for effectiveness and sustainability. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics and qualitative data generated from open-ended questions in the feedback forms and the discussions were analyzed using rapid content analysis. Results: A total of 66.8% of the doctors and 18.9% of the nurses were trained by online synchronous mode while 55.0% of the nursing officers and 47.1% of the nursing orderlies and paramedical staff were trained in onsite skill development sessions. Need assessment identified that healthcare workers were ill-prepared to use medical devices such as Bipap machines, ventilators, and oxygen delivery devices. The participants mentioned that the multidisciplinary approach and video-based demonstrations facilitated their online learning while the incremental learning approach, easy-to-understand terminology and hands-on experience facilitated their onsite skill development sessions. Conclusion: The COVID-19 training package developed was multidisciplinary, effective, sustainable, and scalable in a resource-limited setting. Background and Objectives: Pityriasis versicolor is a common fungal infection of the skin which leads to the formation of scaly and discoloured small lesions on skin. The main objective of this study is to describe clinical and mycological characteristics and the predisposing factors in patients with pityriasis versicolor. Material and Methods: In this prospective, observational, hospital-based cross-sectional study, patients of all ages with clinically suspected lesions of pityriasis versicolor were included. After detailed history and thorough clinical examination, skin scrapings were examined with 10% potassium hydroxide (KOH) under light microscope. The scrapings were also subjected to culture examination. Results: A total of 113 patients [78 (69.0%) male; 35 (31%) female] were included in the study. A total of 87 (76.9%) patients were from rural area. Outdoor occupation and positive family history of pityriasis versicolor was present in 65 (57.5%) and 38 (33.6%) patients, respectively. Recurrent episodes were reported by 66 (60%) patients. Excessive sweating and oily skin were seen in 36 (31.8%) and 24 (21.1%) patients, respectively. History of occlusive clothing was present in 22 (19.4%) patients. Chest, back, and shoulders were affected in 36 (31.8%), 22 (19.4%), and 08 (07.0%) patients, respectively. Hypopigmented lesions were seen in 97 (85.8%) patients. Patches and macules were observed in 60 (53.1%) and 53 (46.9%) patients, respectively. A total of 27 (23.8%) patients reported mild prutitus. A total of 79 (69.9%) patients were KOH positive and culture negative, whereas 26 (23.0%) patients were KOH as well as culture positive. Eight (7.0%) patients were both KOH and culture negative. Conclusion: Pytiriasis versicolor is more common in young adults and males with the most common presentation of hypopigmentation lesions. Introduction: Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at increased risk of acquiring the COVID-19 disease, if there is a breach in the personal protection while managing patients. Objectives: 1. To estimate the pattern of risk exposure among healthcare workers exposed to confirmed cases of COVID-19 working in non-COVID zones of a Teaching Hospital, North-East India. 2. To determine the association between pattern of exposure with their COVID-19 status. Materials and Method: This was a hospital-based cross-sectional study conducted among all HCWs who had occupational exposure to laboratory confirmed COVID-19 cases between July and September 2020 in-non COVID zones of a major tertiary care hospital in Tripura. Results: The present study showed that 215 HCWs were exposed to confirmed cases of COVID-19 while working in non-COVID zones of the hospital. Among the exposed, 39.5% of HCWs had high-risk exposure and 8.8% of HCWs were detected as COVID-19 positive. A majority of the study subjects experienced exposure in the hospital wards (66.0%), in surgical departments (19.5%), had close contact (less than one meter distance) with positive COVID-19 cases (73.5%), and had an exposure of more than 15 minutes (51.2%). The COVID status of the exposed HCWs was significantly associated with no source control (P = 0.016), close contact with COVID-19 positive cases (P = 0.026), more duration of exposure (P < 0.05), use of any PPE (P = 0.000). COVID status was also significantly associated with the high-risk exposure of the participants (P = 0.000). Background: Paederus dermatitis (PD) is common skin condition occurring in South India caused due to contact with Rove beetle. It is often misdiagnosed due to wide difference in its presentation. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical, sociodemographic, and environmental condition of patient's presenting with PD. Methodology: A descriptive study was done among all patients diagnosed of PD at the Dermatology department of a teaching hospital in Trichy, South India, between January and December 2020. A detailed clinical history, examination of the lesion, and systemic examination was done. Patients were followed-up after 1 week to re-assess the lesion. A total of 117 cases were included in the final analysis. Results: The mean age of patients was 24.54 ± 11.8 years. Female were 51% with 84.6% residing in rural area. Majority of the cases presented between January and May. Presence of thick vegetation (85.5%) and sleeping with windows open (60.7%) were found to be the common risk factors. Most patients reported noticing the lesion in the morning with sudden onset associated with redness and tenderness with a bizarre pattern of lesion. Face, neck, and upper extremity were the most affected sites with burning sensation and itching, experienced by 82.1% and 76.1%, respectively. Ocular involvement with peri-orbital odema was seen among 17% of cases. Post-inflammatory pigmentation was present in 92.1% patients. Conclusion: PD present has a varying degree of skin lesions with absence of the typical linear pattern. Knowledge of its presentation is important to avoid misdiagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The study has been designed to assess the knowledge of ethics amongst young students and professionals, and practices of health care ethics among medical professionals in a government teaching hospital in India. Methodology: A cross‑sectional study was carried out at one of the teaching hospitals in Southern India with a sample size of 84 among fresh medical graduates, post‑graduate trainees, and young consultants with work experience of 6 months to 8 years. The data were collected by means of a structured and validated questionnaire, and the questionnaire was administered before and after a lecture/seminar on ethical principles, and results were analyzed using SPSS software. Results: The maximum participants were in the age group of 20 to 24 years with 0–2 years of clinical experience. The basic awareness and practices before the workshop were quite less when compared to after the workshop which showed a very good improvement in the correct responses to the questions. The maximum change seen, reflected in curiosity to learn bioethics. The workshop was an eye‑opener for many participants in terms of the Nuremberg Code and its origin. The ethics committee was an alien concept to many participants, and it was reflected in the response postworkshop. The students felt a strong need to discuss ethics and implement them postworkshop. The segment on attitudes in clinical practice showed an impact on autonomy and truth‑telling (32% to 50%). The segment on ethical practices reflected a confused audience. The increase in sensitivity to police information, and the concept of error of judgment and negligence were positive. The fact that medical practitioners are legally bound to help accident victims showed a positive response. Conclusion: Based on the assessment of pre‑and post‑workshop, there is a strong need to stress the ethical principles and revision of these ideas from time to time. Workshops and interactive sessions are a good way for periodic assessment and reinstatement of these values in our research and clinical practice. Background: Vitamin B12 deficiency leads to a diversity of symptoms and affects many systems. It is often overlooked or sometimes even misdiagnosed in clinical practice. Aims and Objectives: The purposes of this study were to report the prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency, the spectrum of clinical features and to draw attention to the possibility of rare hidden characteristics. Materials and Methods: This study was a multicenter, retrospective, and prospective conducted at a tertiary care teaching hospital and multispecialty hospital. All cases of vitamin B12 deficiency of either sex or age attending the Medicine Department were enrolled in this study from Aug 2015 to Dec 2020. Parenteral vitamin B12 was given, and cases were evaluated for the response on follow-up for more than three months. Results: Of 220 cases, 52.27% were males. Maximum cases were reported from the age group 50 to 65 years (27.27%) and belonged to urban areas (59.1%). The majority were strict vegetarian (86.36%). Among comorbidities, diabetes (20.91%) followed by malabsorption (10.45%) were most common. The cutaneous manifestations were revealed at 38.18%. The most frequent neurological manifestation was paraesthesia (98.18%). Head heaviness/ache was the most frequent (95%) psychiatric manifestation. Anemia was revealed in 87.73% of cases with 88.64% macrocytosis. Axonal sensorimotor (52.63%) neuropathy was a prevalent finding of NCV study. Conclusions: A high index of clinical suspicion is needed in cases with vague manifestations, especially in the pure vegetarian population. The course of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) in pregnancy is unpredictable with outcome trends ranging from milder disease with zero mortality to severe forms and deaths in different parts of the world. We did a comprehensive review of the literature to understand maternal deaths due to COVID-19 in detail. The search was conducted in the PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar databases, using the keywords "maternal mortality", "maternal death", "COVID-19", "septic shock" and "DIC". The search included original articles, review articles, case reports published till date. We found varying case fatality rates ranging from 0.1% to 12.9%. There are various predictors of maternal death, notably the presence of symptoms, comorbidities, severe disease with cytokine storm and multi-organ dysfunction. We also report higher maternal deaths from low-resource regions owing to gaps in expected and delivered maternal care. While reviewing our institutional data, we found 3 maternal deaths related to COVID-19 in pregnancy. We discussed our experience at our institute of three COVID-19 related maternal mortalities to add evidence to the present data. Most maternal deaths occurred in postpartum period. Late referral, loss to follow-up and inadequate care were important determinants of maternal mortality. We concluded that pregnancy cases with or without complications must be considered high risk and addressed judiciously beginning from infection prevention, early diagnosis, disease categorization, and multidisciplinary approach of management to prevent morbidity and mortality. Aim: This study aims to describe the clinical characteristics, maternal and neonatal outcome of pregnancies complicated with COVID-19 infection. Methods: This is a retrospective, single center, observational study conducted on all COVID-19 positive pregnant women who were admitted in our institution from 1st April 2020 to 30th November 2020. During the study period, a total of 201 pregnant and postpartum women with COVID-19 infection confirmed by RT-PCR test, regardless of their symptoms, were admitted and included in the study. Data were collected from hospital records about the demographic profile, clinical characteristics, maternal and neonatal outcomes. Results: The mean age was 26 years (SD = 5.21). Majority patients (71.6%) were asymptomatic and 22.3% had mild symptoms. Only 4 (1.99%) women had severe COVID pneumonia. Majority (75.62%) were admitted in 3rd trimester. Cesarean section rate in COVID-19 infected pregnant women was 53.8%, which was almost similar to 52.8% rate in COVID-19 negative pregnant population. Incidence of preterm birth was 11%. Most neonate were asymptomatic and only 2 of them tested positive on testing within 48 h of birth. Conclusion: There is no major effect of COVID-19 infection during pregnancy on maternal and neonatal outcome. A medical postgraduate course in the field of Laboratory Medicine for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree holders has existed for more than two decades in India, initiated and offered by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, which was created under the special Act of Parliament of India 1956. This course has recently been included in the draft of National Medical Commission's Post Graduate Regulation 2021 list of medical courses, and the foundation guidelines have been laid for other medical colleges and teaching hospitals across the country to start this course. This article, written purely in academic interest, describes the past, present and future of this postgraduate training program in India with an aim to answer several doubts regarding this unique and holistic course with a view to providing a direction to those who are willing to become a laboratory physician through this post-graduation. Context: Serum complement proteins and autoantibodies play an important role in the pathogenesis and diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Abnormalities in various immunoglobulin levels are described in patients of SLE. Aims: To study the spectrum of clinical manifestations and measure the serum levels of complement C3, complement C4, autoantibodies and immunoglobulin G (IgG) in patients of SLE and compare with healthy controls. Settings and Design: The present study is a prospective hospital-based observational study conducted between May 2014 and December 2018. Statistical Analysis Used: Unpaired t-test was used to compare the mean values between the SLE patients and healthy controls. Material and Methods: A total of 100 cases of SLE and 100 healthy controls were included in the study. The clinical data were retrieved. Serum antinuclear antibody, anti-ds DNA antibody, and anti-Smith antibody levels, and complements C3, C4 and IgG were measured. Results: Arthritis (89%) and anaemia (65%) were two common clinical presentations. The low complement C3 levels and C4 were detected in 64 and 62% of the SLE patients. Serum IgG was increased in 41% of the patients. A reduced level of IgG was detected in 6% of the patients. Conclusion: Primary care physicians should be aware of the clinical and serological manifestations of SLE as early detection will reduce end-organ damage. Autoantibody testing and complement testing should be done in all suspected cases. This study showed a significantly reduced C3 and C4 and elevated IgG in many cases of SLE as compared to control. Background: Considering the diverse socio-economic and demographic factors in a vast country like India, it is important to study the long-term trends of hepatitis A (HAV) and hepatitis E (HEV) viruses. This study describes their seroprevalence and long-term trends in a tertiary care center of North India. Methods: The present retrospective observational study was conducted over a period of 8 years (January 2011–December 2018). Serological testing was done for detecting IgM antibodies against HAV and HEV using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: A total of 5319 samples were received during the study period, of which 903 (16.9%) were reactive for anti-HAV IgM antibodies and 795 (14.9%) were reactive for anti-HEV IgM antibodies. Majority of the cases occurred from June to October while HEV cases had a constant presence during the later years. Among HAV group, 534 (59.1%) were children, 336 (37.2%) were adults, and 33 (3.7%) were pregnant females. In HEV group, 632 (79.5%) were adults, 114 (14.3%) were pregnant females, whereas only 49 (6.2%) were children. Among those who were co-infected (n = 87), 48 (55.2%) were adults, 22 (25.3%) were pregnant females, and the rest 17 (19.5%) were children. Conclusions: The shift in seroprevalence toward adults, along with an increasing trend of the number of cases reporting to the hospital, warrants active surveillance of HAV. Similarly, screening protocols for HEV should be set up as part of the antenatal management for early detection of the cases among pregnant females. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Health care workers are at the frontline for management and containment of COVID-19 infection which has put them at additional risk of the disease. Infection and subsequent quarantine of contacts among HCW may produce considerable strain on the health care system. It is essential that we study the modes by which HCW may get infected in the work environment. Methods: All HCW testing positive for SARS COV 2 from 1st March 2020 to 31st Jan 2021 were included in the study. Data regarding possible source of infection, details of symptoms along with demographic details were collected. Results: A total of 390 health-care workers tested positive for SARS CoV-2 in the institution. The mean age of affected health-care workers was 32.82 (±10.6) years (range 20–65 years), and 61.3% were female 33% of the positive HCW were doctors and 19.5% nurses. 29% of the infections occurred during patient care of which majority were from the non-COVID areas of the hospital. Interactions with infected colleagues constituted 27.4% of the infections. Symptomatics constituted 67% and the predominant symptoms included Fever, myalgia and severe headache. 57.2% of those followed up reported persistence of symptoms, commonly fatigue (53%), dyspnea on exertion (48%) and myalgia (18%). Conclusion and Recommendation: Infection control practices in non-COVID areas of the hospital needs to be stepped up. Adherence to masking and personal protection during clinical interactions and with colleagues needs to be maintained. Background: India intends to start its 1st dose of vaccination against Covid‑19 on January 16th, 2021 prioritizing its frontline health care professionals with either of the two vaccines—Covaxin or Covishield. Whenever a new vaccine is launched, it is marred with controversy and myths. To understand the doubts and concerns better, this study was conducted on health care professionals working in a tertiary care hospital. Materials and Methods: Willing respondents, who are working in the institute, were administered the questionnaire asking their views on knowledge, beliefs, and reasons for hesitancy regarding Covid‑19 immunization. A Likert scale was used to quantify the responses regarding participants’ knowledge, beliefs, and hesitancies regarding immunization with the available vaccines. Data were analyzed using MS office Excel sheets and JASP software was used to analyze the data thus obtained. Results: Out of 122 complete responses, we had 73 (60%) doctors, while 30 (24%) were nursing staff, the rest comprised of other health care workers, such as housekeeping staff, janitorial, etc., 66 (54%) respondents were unaware, while 25 (20%) respondents had hesitancy and 23 (18%) were having extremely negative views regarding vaccination. Some of the variables, such as age, role, marital status, gender, etc., were found to be possibly associated with these scores. Conclusion: Issues like concerns over vaccine safety, efficacy, reliability, etc., are deterrents for individuals and whole programme and vaccination drive across the nation. Time and again it has been seen that despite the vaccines’ contribution in breaking the transmission, concerns are making people either hesitant or unmotivated to get the vaccines. Objectives: This study aimed to estimate the association between perceived stress and eating behavior among residents in a tertiary teaching hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Methods: A total of 305 residents were invited from seven major specialties in King Saud University Medical City to participate in this cross-sectional study, and among them, 214 completed the questionnaire between April 2019 and January 2020. The questionnaire evaluated stress and eating behavior using the 4-item Perceived Stress Scale and Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire, respectively. Moreover, items related to socio-demographic data, weekend coverage per month, night duties per month, fast food, snacks, and vegetables and fruits intake were included. Results: We found a weak positive correlation at the significance level (P < 0.05) between the level of stress and both the clearly labeled emotions (0.184) and emotional eating (0.171). Furthermore, there was a significant effect of specialty, Wilk's Lambda =0.858, F (30, 814) =1.062, P = 0.030. Among residents who performed 4 to 6-night duties per month, a significant correlation existed between stress and abnormal eating behaviors. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated a positive correlation between stress, night duties, and abnormal eating behaviors. Introduction: Changing demographic patterns worldwide and improvement in healthcarehas contributed to increasing visits to the emergency department byelderly patients. Geriatric patients usually have multiple co-morbidities and declining physiological functional status. This complex interplay of various factors requires a specific and curated approach from the emergency physicians.Our aim was to study the pattern and prevalence of geriatric emergencies and the profile of infectious and non-infectious causes of fever in geriatric population in our tertiary care center. Materials and Methods: This retrospective descriptive study was carried out at a tertiary care hospital of north India and included all patients aged more than 18 years who visited the emergency department over a period of six months (July 2018 to December 2018). Detailed data regarding demographic, clinical and diagnosis was obtained retrospectively from the hospital records system. The patients were divided into two groups, age less than 60 years and elderly patients more than 60 years of age for comparison. Results: A total of 24768 patients above the age of 18 years visited the emergency department over a period of six months. Out of which 5399 (27.5%) patients belonged to the geriatric age group more than 60 years of age. 2474 (45.8%) geriatric age group patientswere triaged to critical areas level one and level two as compared to 4668 (24.1%) patients aged less than 60 years. Ninety (1.8%) geriatric patients succumbed to death as compared to 77 (0.4%) patients aged less than 60 years. 651 (21.9%) geriatric patients were shifted to intensive care unit as opposed to 1038 (14.8%) patients of the younger age group.226 (4.2%) geriatric patients presented with fever in the emergency department.116 (73.4%) patients having underlying co-morbidities , had fever due to infectious causes whereas 42 (26.5%) patients had fever due to non-infectious causes. Aim: Emergency intensive care of the elderly is often complicated and multifaceted. Understanding the clinical profile of elderly patients admitted in an emergency department-intensive care unit (ED-ICU) is crucial in planning health policies in geriatric emergency medicine. Thus, the aim of the study was to create a local registry of elderly people utilizing the ED-ICU services and to understand the rate and predictors of mortality. Methods: A retrospective chart analysis was performed including all patients aged ≥60 years who had an ED-ICU admission during a 6-month period (August 2018–January 2019). A structured case record form was used to capture information such as basic demography, clinical profile, and outcomes. Results: Total number of records considered for final analysis were 503. Mortality was seen in 21.07% (n = 106/503). The most common presenting complaint and cause of death was breathing difficulty (n = 48/503; 29.42%) and pneumonia (n = 41/106; 38.67%), repectively. The significant predictors of mortality [adjusted odds ratio; 95% confidence intervals; P value] were hypertension (2.195; 1.255, 3.840; 0.006), chronic liver disease (CLD) (4.324; 1.170, 15.979; 0.028), malignancy (2.854; 1.045, 7.796; 0.041), requiring noninvasive ventilation (NIV) (2.618; 1.449, 4.730; 0.001), requiring intubation (6.638; 3.705, 11.894; <0.001), and requiring vasopressors (3.583; 1.985, 6.465; <0.001). Conlusion: Approximately one in every five elderly patients getting admitted in ED-ICU died, and respiratory illness was the common diagnosis leading to death. Background: Quality of life in Diabetics (QOLID) questionnaire is a validated tool to assess the quality of life affected by diagnosed diabetic patients and has 8 sub domains, which are essential factors that have proven effect on the management. In a state of art Diabetic clinic in Bhubaneswar city, the tool was used to add more quality to diabetic management. Methods: The ongoing assessment through the months of 2020 (study period being from December 2019 to August 2020), offered an opportunity to assess the effect of the pandemic on QOLID scores and review some nascent or strong factors which may be affecting chronic disease management. Results: Complete data could be collected from 599 subjects, 343 from pre pandemic and 256 from pandemic period. The overall scores which were on 100, did not show any significant difference for pre covid and the Covid period, interestingly nearly 1.93 points better in Covid period (69.69±11.10 vs71.62±8.49; p=0.396). Mild difference in overall scores of 4.82 points is seen in females in Covid period; and as seen in age group data maximum gain in sub domains, more for females is seen in the emotional and mental health. Though women reporting to the clinic in both periods are usually in 1:2 ratios, as against men; but QOLID scores in both men and women in Covid period was 71 to 80 points. After the univariate analysis for significant factors, it was that Covid (1.50; 1.08 - 2.07) ; compliance to medications (2.27; 1.48 - 3.50) and reporting of all diabetic complications especially that of eye and depression are coming out to be strong associative factors to affect QOLID scores. Interestingly, rising education has a protective effect on QOLID scores that was significant as higher awareness and better job or earning opportunities may be a contributor for higher QOLID scores for the well educated. Background: Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus -2 (SARS-CoV-2) has infected millions of people all over the world and Sri Lanka is not an exception for the impact of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19). As there are no effective therapeutic agents at present and newly developed vaccines are not freely available for many countries, preventive measures such as handwashing, social distancing, and respiratory etiquette are key to control of spread. The effective implementation of these measures depends on public knowledge and attitude towards COVID-19 and adherence to key practices. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study conducted among 500 non-COVID-19 patients who attended the Outpatient Department (OPD) of the Teaching Hospital Jaffna, Sri Lanka. Knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) was assessed through a self-administered questionnaire and analysis was performed by using SPSS 26. Results: The majority were females (67.8%) and the mean age of the participants was 36.9 (range: 15–85). Most of the participants were homemakers. Two hundred and twenty-two patients (44.4%: 40.1–48.8) showed a suboptimal knowledge score regarding COVID-19. The males, age above 65, were significantly associated with low knowledge score (P < 0.05). Similarly, a significant proportion (36.4%: 32.3–40.7) showed a suboptimal attitude score but the majority of the participants have adopted positive behaviours such as frequently washing hands (88.4%) and wearing masks in appropriate places (91.6%). The major sources for information regarding COVID-19 among the participants were the news media (54.0%) followed by social media (23.2%). Conclusion: As a significant proportion of the participants showed a poor knowledge score and gaps in specific aspects related to COVID-19, the primary care physicians have a significant role to play to improve community knowledge by educating specific groups such as the males and elderly by using appropriate news media and social media platforms. Introduction: Pregnancy brings about many changes in mothers' body which continue even after the baby is born. After a vaginal delivery, taking good care of the mother is an essential part of postpartum care and to maintain overall fitness. Objective: The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effect of a physiotherapeutic intervention to improve the maternity fitness of Indian women. Methodology: It was a three-group RCT (randomized controlled trial). The target population consisted of women in ante and postnatal stage, 50 participants (58 were included in the end) in each group, randomly selected from Obstetrics and Gynecology OPD of a tertiary care hospital in North India. The study was carried out in the department of PRM (Physiotherapy). A total of 174 participants was included in the study and was divided into three groups, two intervention groups, and one control group. The target population consisted of women in ante and postnatal stage, randomly selected from ANC (Antenatal clinic) and PNC (Post-natal clinic). The study was conducted over a period of 4 years (2014–2018). They were advised to do exercise, postural correction, regular walking, and electrotherapy modalities and six follow-ups throughout their pregnancy. Outcome measures like (Visual Analogue Scale = VAS): Low and upper back pain relief (n = 158), Leg cramps (n = 41), Coccyx pain (n = 36), Sacro-iliac joint pain (n = 26) was considered. Results: The impact of the intervention package on both ante-natal and post-natal women with fitness-related health problems showed significant improvement. Conclusion: Pain, leg cramp and heaviness in the lower limb, coccyx pain, etc., during pregnancy are common complaints that start early in pregnancy and may persist throughout life if treatment does not start early in the pregnancy. Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is the most common endocrinological disease associated with different life-threatening infections. Urinary Tract Infection is one of them which may lead to Intensive care Unit admission and even death. In this study, we would like to find out the spectrum of uropathogen and its antibiotic sensitivity, so that we can choose empirical antibiotics early to save lives. Aim and Objectives: To find out spectrum of uropathogens in Diabetic patients attending to Diabetes Clinic of a tertiary hospital and to find out the Antibiotic sensitivity pattern in isolated bacteria. Material and Methods: In this cross-sectional observational hospital-based study, consecutive patients of any age and gender having Diabetes mellitus and symptoms of Urinary Tract Infection, who attended Out-patient Department and Diabetes Clinic of General Medicine Department from August 2020 to October 2020, were included. After taking consent and brief history, mid-stream clean catch urine sample was collected in sterile container and sent to a Microbiology laboratory for culture of micro-organism and sensitivity to antibiotics. Results: Among 202 diabetic patients recruited in our study, 138 (68.31%) were female and 64 (31.69%) were male. The mean age of all participants was 50.23 ± 11.45 years. Culture confirmed UTI was 24.3% and patients showing classic UTI symptoms were 32.7%. Compared to male, most of the culture-positive and symptomatic patients were female (26.0% and 37% respectively). Culture-positive patients who showed classic UTI symptoms were 42.42%; however, we found 15.44% asymptomatic patients who showed culture positivity. The mean HbA1c level was 7.5 ± 1.6%. Subgroup analysis revealed that patients with HbA1c >7.5% were at a significantly higher risk of developing culture-positive UTI (P < 0.00001, Odds ratio 21.71). Prevalence of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria were 65.3% (32 out of 49) and 28.57% (14 out of 49), respectively. The major organism isolated were Escherichia coli (39%), Klebsiella spp. (19%), Enterococcus spp. (12%), Staphylococcus aureus (12%), and Candida spp. (6%). The sensitivity pattern of the gram-negative bacilli showed the presence of Extended-spectrum betalactamases (ESBLs) in 36.84% (11 out of 32 isolates). The bacteria grown were most sensitive to Piperacillin-tazobactam (100%), Cefoperazone-sulbactam (100%) and Meropenem (100%) whereas Fluoroquinolone and Co-Amoxyclav showed least sensitivity (43.8% and 37.5% respectively). The Staphylococcus spp. showed 100% sensitivity to Vancomycin, Teicoplanin, Linezolid whereas Penicillin-G and Ampicillin showed 12.5% sensitivity. The Enterococcus spp. revealed 100% sensitivity to Vancomycin, Teicoplanin, Linezolid, and Fosfomycin. Drug resistance is emerging in clinical isolates. Prevalence of ESBL in Enterobacteriacea was found to be 34%. Conclusion: All patients with diabetes must be searched for urinary tract bacterial colonization by simple routine urinary culture even though they are asymptomatic. Resistance to common antibiotics, particularly to oral formulations (especially Fluoroquinolones and Ampicillin) is increasing day by day due to indiscriminate use of antibiotics. This study highlighted that the policy makers should formulate antibiotic policy for rational use of antibiotics, which could help clinicians to prescribe proper antibiotics. Background: Cholecystectomy is one of the most common general surgical operations performed worldwide. Limited data is available about the histopathological diagnoses of various gallbladder diseases in North Eastern part of India even though a higher incidence of gallbladder cancer has been reported from this part of the Country. Hence, a retrospective review of the histopathological findings of routine cholecystectomy specimens was done to assess the incidence of gallbladder cancer and other gallbladder pathologies. Aims and Objective: To study the incidence of gallbladder cancer and other pathologic findings in routine cholecystectomy specimens. Methodology: A retrospective study of the histopathological findings of cholecystectomy specimens with presumed benign gallbladder diseases who had undergone cholecystectomy from June 2013 till October 2021. Results: A total of 1683 patients had undergone cholecystectomy during the study period. In total, 1354 patients underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy and 339 patients underwent open cholecystectomy. Gallstones were present in 1631 patients. Chronic cholecystitis and cholesterosis were the most common histopathologic findings, followed by pyloric metaplasia. Unsuspected gallbladder cancer was detected in eight patients (0.48%). Conclusion: Chronic cholecystitis was the most common histopathologic finding followed by pyloric metaplasia. Gallstones were found in most patients. Background: Nutrition transition has replaced homemade foods with processed items that increased the prevalence of noncommunicable disease in adult population. But we know little about the food intake pattern of adults specially in urban sector. Aims: The study aimed at describing the food-consumption patterns in a sample of adults residing in urban area. Settings and Design: An observational cross-sectional study was done from April to June, 2019 at urban field practice area of a teaching hospital of Kolkata. Methods and Material: A prevalidated, pretested, 51-item, food-frequency questionnaire was applied to assess the food-consumption pattern of 110 participants. Results: Adults reported poor dietary intakes; more than half reported no consumption of green-leafy vegetables (GLV) (66.4%), other vegetables (52.8%), and fruits (63.6%). Whereas 72.7% reported consumption of three or more servings of energy-dense foods and 90.9% reported consumption of three or more servings of energy-dense beverages on previous day. Mean intake of food varied from 0.34 (SD = 0.47) for GLV to 8.19 (SD = 2.39) for cereals. Females consumed more servings of GLV, other vegetables, roots-tubers, and fruits than males. Fruit consumption was low in all age groups. Higher socioeconomic class people strikingly consumed no GLV. Conclusions: Study participants reported consumption of more energy-dense snacks, beverages than healthy food like GLV, fruits. Background: Pregnancy is a positive, fulfilling experience for many, but it can put the mother at the risk of suffering ill-health, disability, or even maternal death. The common causes of maternal death include pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) or gestational hypertension or hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (HDP), post-partum hemorrhage, and pulmonary embolism. Modifications in lifestyle and diet have been widely advocated as a cost-effective strategy to prevent PIH. Objectives: To assess the role of dietary factors in PIH attending antenatal care services at a teaching hospital. Materials and Methods: Pregnant women who were attending the antenatal clinic who were diagnosed with hypertension in pregnancy and normotensive before the pregnancy were included in the study. As per the protocol, informed written consent, demographic details with clinical data were obtained from the patients. A total of 225 antenatal cases having hypertension in pregnancy were included in our study. Results: Majority of the study subjects (81.8%) were taking mixed diets, 50.2% consumed additional salt in their diet, the intake history of visible fat was given by 25.3% and 96.4% consumed tea while 52.9% had a history of consuming junk food. Among the 41 vegetarian study subjects with hypertension in pregnancy, the maximum subjects (73.1%) had preeclampsia followed by gestational hypertension in 23.6% the subjects. The relation between the type of diet and hypertension in pregnancy was found to be statistically insignificant. The relation between visible fat consumption and hypertension in pregnancy was found to be statistically significant. Discussion: The association of dietary factors with HDP could be explained by several factors. One being the high-calorie intake by women with known HDP and those without HDP. The imbalance between the energy intake and expenditure is a potential risk factor and leads to overweight or obesity. Statement of the Problem: Healthcare workers (HCW) are the most vulnerable group for contracting SARS-CoV-2. Assessment of seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies among HCW, thus can provide important data on pathogen exposure, infectivity, and adherence to personal protective equipment (PPE). The present study aimed at assessing SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence among HCW and exploring associations with demographics, category of exposure to COVID-19 patients, preventive measures taken and relation with COVID-19 symptoms. Method of Study: HCWs with a minimum gap 2 weeks from last duty were eligible to participate in the study. The enrolled HCW were categorized into high-risk and low-risk category based on work in COVID-19 areas. HCWs SARS-CoV-2 specific IgG and IgM antibodies were detected using rapid immunochromatography test. Results: Out of 821 randomly selected HCWs, either IgM or IgG antibody was detected in 32 HCWs (32/821, 3.9%). Only IgM antibodies were detected in 14 (1.7%), only IgG was detected in 9 (1.0%), and both IgM and IgG antibodies were present in 9 HCWs. Seropositivity was significantly higher in high-risk category (5.7% vs. 2.2.%), HCWs who ever had COVID-19 related symptoms in last 3 months (5.6% vs. 2.8%), and those who had earlier tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 with real-time reverse transcriptase PCR (36.6% vs. 3.5%). Seroprevalence was highest (6.9%) among housekeeping and sanitation staff. Conclusions: Overall, low seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in our HCWs is an indicator of effective infection control practice. Background: Hospitals are at the forefront of dealing infectious public health emergencies. Recently, COVID-19 has been declared as pandemic by the World Health Organization. Dealing with COVID-19 pandemic requires high intensity of administrative activity. Objective: We conducted this study to assess and compare, objectively, hospital preparedness with available Centre of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) standards. Methods: CDC has issued checklist for the assessment of hospital preparedness for COVID-19 pandemic, globally. This list contains 10 elements with sub-sections. We objectified the same and scored the hospital preparations accordingly. Various financial efforts made by the hospital to procure COVID19-specified items was also recorded.Results: As per the CDC checklist, the hospital scored 197 points (72.06%) out of 270 points with highest points in element two and eight. Element two is for the development for written COVID-19 plan. Element eight consists of addressing the occupational health of healthcare workers. Lowest scoring was in the element seven represented visitor access and movement within facility. During the study period, the hospital procured items of approximately 55 lakhs. In the study period, doctors, nursing staff, housekeeping staff, and security staff were channelized for doing COVID-19 duties. Conclusions: We obtained a score above 70% (good) which is quite encouraging, and we concluded that pandemic preparations in hospitals are necessary and it can be assessed objectively against prevailing standards. It is important in poor countries like India where spending on healthcare is minimal compared to other countries. Additionally, this assessment can be used to guide us further changes in policies and identifying the gaps in pandemic preparedness in hospitals which require special attention. Background and Objectives: Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) can lead to significant morbidity, rarely mortality and financial burden over the patient. ADRs that can be prevented can be considered as form of medication error sometimes. This study assessed the preventability, predictability and severity of ADRs using different assessment scales. Methods: ADR Monitoring Centre under newly established teaching hospital in Chhattisgarh collected ADR reports from different healthcare professionals during the period from November 2016 to November 2018. Analysis of the reported ADRs was done for their causality assessment, demographic details of patients, most common drug class responsible for the ADR. Seriousness and preventability of ADRs were analysed by using WHO Causality Scale and Modified Schumock and Thornton Scale respectively. Severity of ADRs was assessed by Modified Hartwig and Siegel Scale. Results: Totally 288 ADRs were reported in a 2-year period. 92.01% ADRs were non serious. 44.8% were mild, 53.81% moderate and 1.39% were severe ADRs. Causality assessment showed: 5.21% certain, 54.86% probable, 39.24% possible and 0.69% unlikely ADRs. Around 26% ADRs were definitely and probably preventable and 27.78% ADRs were predictable. The highest number (32.29%) of ADRs were reported to antimicrobials. 11.15% ADRs were reported to NSAIDs, in that 37.5% ADRs were due to NSAIDs combination. Conclusion: Many ADRs in this study are non-serious, preventable and predictable. Management of such ADRs through therapeutic interventions would be beneficial in a better patient outcome. Multidisciplinary strategies involving physicians, pharmacists, other healthcare professionals and patient education and awareness about ADRs are needed for prevention of ADRs. Introduction: Anaerobes are important however the most neglected pathogens. Timely isolation of anaerobes can guide the clinician about the correct course of clinical treatment and thus reduce the mortality and also the problem of antimicrobial resistance. Materials and Methods: Tissue and/or pus aspirates were collected aseptically from infectious sites in the Robertson's cooked meat medium (RCM) and sent to anaerobic bacteriology laboratory for culture. Subcultures from RCM for each sample were done on neomycin blood agar and 5% sheep blood agar along with metronidazole disc (5μg). The plates were incubated in an anaerobic jar using GasPak for 72 hrs. The preliminary identification was performed by standard biochemical tests for both obligate and facultative anaerobic isolates. Speciations of obligate anaerobes were performed by Vitek 2 automated system. Results: Obligate anaerobes either single or polymicrobial were obtained in 38/216 (14.5 %) samples processed during the study period. Polymicrobial infections were reported in 21/216 (55.26%) samples and most commonly with obligate anaerobic gramnegative bacilli i.e. Prevotella-Porphyromonas and Bacteroides fragilis group. Most common monomicrobial anaerobic infections were observed with Veillonella spp. (n=4) and Porphyromonas spp. (n=4) followed by Bacteroides fragilis (n=3). Obligate anaerobes were predominantly isolated from skin and soft tissue infections (n=14) followed by surgical site infections (n=8). Conclusion: Although most of the infections are polymicrobial, a rise in the incidence of monomicrobial anaerobic infections has been noticed. Therefore, the performance of anaerobic cultures along with aerobic cultures is much needed for complete bacterial work-up of specimens from infectious sites and better patient management. Background: India attributes to about 15% of the maternal mortality globally. Many a time poor maternal and neonatal outcomes occur unanticipated during intrapartum and postpartum period. An efficient referral system identifies the indications necessitating prompt referrals besides ensuring patient friendliness and continuity of care. Methodology: The descriptive, retrospective study was done in a secondary care hospital of a teaching institution in South India, run by primary care physicians, obstetricians and pediatricians. It describes the referrals from labour room in a year, identifying the referral rate, indications, maternal and neonatal outcomes. Results: The referral rate was found to be 3 per cent. The most common indication for the referrals was hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (54.5 percent). Among the women referred, there were no maternal deaths and majority had uncomplicated postpartum period. Eleven women developed postpartum hemorrhage. Neonatal outcome reflected a good trend as 83 per cent had an uneventful hospital stay. There were eight early neonatal deaths. Conclusion: The hospital could reduce the referral load to its tertiary care due to adequate training of primary care post graduates in basic obstetrics and anaesthesia skills, establishing standardized referral protocol and monitoring with regular clinical audits. Context: There is a global need for quality eye banking practices and sensitization of primary care physicians toward corneal donation. Aims: To evaluate performance of a recently established eye bank (EB) and quality of corneas obtained, and identify areas of improvement during procurement and utilization of donor corneas. Settings and Design: This retrospective observational study is based on records of corneas collected through hospital cornea retrieval programme (HRCP) in the EB of a tertiary care institution during the first 2 years of its establishment. Methods and Material: Data on demographic characteristics of donors, death-preservation interval, specular microscopy parameters of corneas, indications for utilization, and reasons for non-utilization of corneas were collected. Statistical Analysis Used: Means, standard deviation, range, frequencies, and proportions were analyzed. Spearman's correlation coefficient and Kruskal--Wallis test were applied taking P < 0.05 as significant. Results: The EB retrieved 54 corneas from 27 donors with mean age 42.3 ± 24.2 years. All tissues were preserved in Cornisol®. Majority (50%) of transplantable tissues had an endothelial cell density (ECD) between 2,000 and 2,500 cells/mm2. ECD decreased significantly with increasing age (Spearman's ρ -0.747, P < 0.001; Kruskal--Wallis P < 0.001). Overall utilization rate of tissues was 87.04% (47/54), and utilizable corneas (50/54, 92.6%) were mainly used for optical purposes (34/50, 68%). Conclusions: Successful HCRP of the recently established EB has shown considerable promise in terms of quality and utilisation of corneas. Introduction: Healthcare reform efforts focus on patient-centered care is measured by patient satisfaction. Emergency department (ED) satisfaction ratings are often the lowest. Since ED is the first point of contact for the patient care to receive primary care, we aimed to explore patient satisfaction related to ED healthcare services at our institution. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, ED-CAHPS, a standardized validated nine-item survey questionnaire, was administered via telephonic interviews to Arabic-speaking patients who attended ED at our institution. Patient demographics, ED operation parameters, and healthcare utilization factors were evaluated as patient satisfaction predictors. Results: Out of 713 patients who were contacted 200 patients responded to the survey. In all, 70% of respondents were aged 35-64 years and 55% had secondary or higher education levels. The dimension average for the questions regarding arrival, waiting time, and urgency of treatment was 36%. Regarding satisfaction with pain management was 42%, medication information was 34% and interpreter services were only 40%. The overall dimension average for satisfaction regarding nursing care was 43%, doctor care was 36%. The overall dimension average for satisfaction regarding the discharge process was 56%. The highest scores were observed for whether the patients were asked about follow-up care (61%), whether they understood the symptoms to look for after leaving the ED (58%), and whether they received care within 30 min of arriving at the ED (56%). On the other hand, the worst scores were recorded for whether the patients were made to understand regarding the side effects of new medications (29%), whether nurses spent enough time with them (33%), and whether doctors spent enough time with them (34%). Conclusions: Based on these results, recommendations were made to improve patients' perceptions/experience in receiving the care and the overall rating. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to establish the prevalence of diabetes-specific psychological distress (DSPD) among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) using the "Problem areas in diabetes" (PAID) scale at a teaching hospital in southern India. Other objectives included observing the relationship between socio-demographic factors and DSPD and, finally exploring the level of acceptance of the PAID scale by Asian–Indian patients. Methods: The patients with T2DM aged >18 years attending the diabetes outpatient clinic were recruited. They completed two sets of questionnaires; PAID and a satisfactory questionnaire, which included socio-demographic characteristics and questions relating to the acceptance of PAID. Statistical analysis was performed using Stata 13.1 and Excel. Results: A total of 253 questionnaires were completed, including 157 (62.1%) male and 96 (37.9%) female patients. The prevalence of DSPD was 32.8% (83/253). Younger age (OR 3.65, 95% CI 1.36–9.80) and presence of retinopathy (OR 2.60, 95% CI 1.12–6.04) were significantly associated with DSPD. However, it was observed that one-third of the patients had an elevated level of distress regardless of socio-demographic or clinical factors. PAID was well accepted by the participants and 84.6% (214/253) were pleased to complete it again. Conclusion: About one-third of the patients with T2DM had DSPD. Psychological distress was higher in the younger age group and those with retinopathy. PAID is an easy, well-accepted questionnaire and would serve as a useful tool to screen for DSPD. Background: A large number of people are being discharged from the hospital following COVID-19 without assessment of recovery. Systematic follow-up identifies the physical and physiological burden which could be used to inform the need for rehabilitation and/or further investigations. Methodology: A cross-sectional observational study of sample size 103 who were tested positive by TruNAAT in the month of August to September 2020 was conducted, whose data were collected from the medical records. Phone call interviews were conducted 2 months post-COVID-19, after ethical and institutional permission, and they were asked for any persisting symptoms at this point and the risk factors were noted. Data were analysed using various statistical methods. Result: The most common symptoms at onset were fever (49.5%), cough (28.2%), sore throat (18.4%) and loss of smell (17.5%). The most common comorbidities noted were diabetes mellitus (30.1%), hypertension (14.6%) and heart disease (7.8%). The cases with more than 14 days for COVID-19 to be negative are almost the same in cases with comorbidities (11.1%) and no comorbidities (16.3%). Around 43.7% had post-COVID-19 symptoms. The most common post-COVID-19 symptoms noted were fatigue (28.2%), breathing difficulty (12.6%) and body pain (4.9%). The post_COVID_19 symptoms are significantly higher in cases who took treatment from hospital(moderate to severe cases) (54.4%) compared to the cases who took treatment at home (35.7%). Persisting breathing difficulty is significantly higher in cases with pre-COVID-19 asthma/COPD compared to the cases with no pre-COVID-19 asthma/COPD, which makes COPD and asthma patients to be considered high risk for post-COVID-19 sequelae. Objective: This study was aimed to analyze the prescription pattern of disease modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) therapy in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in a tertiary care teaching hospital in Uttarakhand, India. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 150 RA patients who were given DMARD therapy. Patient's demographic details, drugs prescribed with their dosage and administration routes and the usage of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapy were recorded to study the prescription pattern. Results: Overall, 4 DMARDs were prescribed in all the studied patients: Methotrexate (n = 150), hydroxychloroquine (n = 35), leflunomide (n = 5), and adalimumab (n = 1). Single DMARD therapy with methotrexate was prescribed to 110 (73.3%) followed by double therapy with methotrexate + hydroxychloroquine in 35 (23.3%), triple therapy (methotrexate + hydroxychloroquine + leflunomide) in 4 (2.7%) and triple therapy with biological DMARD (methotrexate + hydroxychloroquine + leflunomide + adalimumab) in 1 (0.7%) patient. Adjuvant therapy drugs included: Prednisolone (n = 150), folic acid (n = 150), naproxen (n = 150), calcium (n = 150), vitamin D (n = 150) and indomethacin (n = 40). Of the total, 61.4% patients also took complimentary alternative medicine (CAM) therapy. Conclusion: Our study concludes that the most commonly prescribed DMARDs in our setting, to patients of RA, in descending order of frequency were methotrexate, followed by hydroxychloroquine, leflunomide and lastly adalimumab. Background and Aim: Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are infections acquired by patients during their hospital stay which they did not have previously. This also includes infections acquired by healthcare professionals while managing infected patients. Since both healthcare professionals and patients can be a source of spreading infections across there is a need of practicing standard precautions religiously, to minimize this risk. This study aimed to assess the knowledge of healthcare professionals working at The Indus Hospital, a tertiary care hospital of Karachi, Pakistan. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between March 2017 and July 2018. 205 employees working at The Indus Hospital, Karachi were recruited in this study. A self-made questionnaire based on CDC guidelines was administered to the participants and their responses were recorded. Results: Among all participants, nearly two-thirds (70%) had a very good knowledge of the use of standard precautions, 19.5% had good knowledge, and 12.2% had average/below average knowledge. Of those having very good knowledge, most of them were doctors (60%). Older age groups had more knowledge than the younger age groups. Conclusion: Our study concluded that among different healthcare workers, the nurses had less knowledge as compared to doctors. There was a significant association found between the age of the healthcare professionals and the information he/she has on the standard precautions. Improving the knowledge of doctors and nurses would help in breaking the chain of nosocomial infections and will decrease the burden of infectious diseases on our society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
