The absorption of solar photons controls the composition of the middle atmosphere. Concern about the effects of man's industrial activities on his environment has led to a number of long-term programs related to stratospheric photochemistry. An important part of these programs represents studies of the variability of the sun's solar spectral irradiance. A program to measure the solar ultraviolet flux, both within and outside the earth's atmosphere, has been in progress for a number of years. This program has the objective to develop techniques which would provide an absolute accuracy of at least 5 percent. The amount of satellite instrument degradation is determined on the basis of a comparison of data provided by these instruments with data obtained in connection with rocket flights. It was found that a significant decrease in the solar irradiance below 190 nm occurred between 1980 and 1981.

Maps are produced of the atomic oxygen density near 97 km showing a strong variation in latitude, longitude, universal time, and time of year. These densities are deduced from atomic oxygen green nightglow observations carried out from Ogo 6. Meridional wind patterns needed to support the asymmetries observed in local oxygen production and loss rates are deduced.

Analysis of data obtained by the backscatter ultraviolet (BUV) experiment on the Atmosphere Explorer E satellite has provided equatorial ozone mixing ratio profiles for equinox and solstice conditions. The combination of these results with a pure oxygen chemical model yields the rate of odd oxygen loss due to the sum of the odd hydrogen, nitrogen, and chlorine cycles. Use of recent mid-latitude stratospheric measurements of HO(x), NO(x), and ClO(x) with the BUV data provides an independent calculation of the catalytic loss. Below 45 km the agreement between the two sets of loss rates is satisfactory. At higher altitudes the odd hydrogen cycle provides far more O(x) loss than can be tolerated by the BUV measurements if the photodissociation of O2 is the only source and has the currently accepted magnitude. The results suggest either a tropical HO(x) concentration smaller than is now believed or the presence of a very large source of odd oxygen in the upper stratosphere and lower mesosphere.

Water vapor in the lower stratosphere was measured in situ by two aluminum oxide hygrometers mounted on the nose of an RB57 aircraft. Data were taken nearly continuously from January to May 1974 from an altitude of approximately 11-19 km as the aircraft flew between 70 deg N and 50 deg S over the land areas in the Western Hemisphere. Pseudomeridional cross sections of water vapor and temperature were derived from the flight data and show mixing ratios predominantly between 2 and 4 microg/g with an extreme range of 1-8 microg/g. Measurement precision was estimated by comparing the simultaneously measured values from the two flight hygrometer systems. Accuracy was estimated to be about + or - 40% at 19 km. A height-averaged latitudinal cross section of water vapor indicates symmetry of wet and dry zones. This cross section is compared with other aircraft measurements and relates to meridional circulation models.

The atomic oxygen distribution as a function of altitude between 80 and 120 km and as a function of latitude has been deduced from Ogo 6 557.7-nm airglow photometer data obtained between August 1969 and April 1970. The results indicate that the density ranges from 15 to 50 billion per cu cm at 120 km; that there is a semiannual variation by a factor of 3 in the global average density near 100 km in phase with the satellite drag semiannual effect; and that large latitudinal variations occur with maximums between 40 and 60 deg in the winter hemisphere and sometimes deep minimums in the tropics. The implication of these results for meridional and vertical transport patterns is discussed.
