As a result of their important role in weather and the global hydrological cycle, understanding atmospheric rivers' (ARs) connection to synoptic‐scale climate patterns and atmospheric dynamics has become increasingly important. In addition to case studies of two extreme AR events, we produce a December climatology of the three‐dimensional structure of water vapor and O3 (ozone) distributions associated with ARs in the northeastern Pacific from 2004 to 2014 using MERRA‐2 reanalysis products. Results show that positive O3 anomalies reside in dry intrusions of stratospheric air due to stratosphere‐to‐troposphere transport (STT) behind the intense water vapor transport of the AR. In composites, we find increased excesses of O3 concentration, as well as in the total O3 flux within the dry intrusions, with increased AR strength. We find that STT O3 flux associated with ARs over the NE Pacific accounts for up to 13% of total Northern Hemisphere STT O3 flux in December, and extrapolation indicates that AR‐associated dry intrusions may account for as much as 32% of total NH STT O3 flux. This study quantifies STT of O3 in connection with ARs for the first time and improves estimates of tropospheric ozone concentration due to STT in the identification of this correlation. In light of predictions that ARs will become more intense and/or frequent with climate change, quantifying AR‐related STT O3 flux is especially valuable for future radiative forcing calculations. Plain Language Summary: Long filaments of rapidly moving water vapor in the atmosphere, known as atmospheric rivers (ARs), play a vital role in the Earth's water cycle. Because of this, research continues to expand into ARs' relationship with large‐scale climate patterns. In this paper, we use data from the Modern Era Retrospective analysis for Research Applications to examine several extreme ARs that made landfall on the U.S. West Coast and their relationship to the transport of ozone from the stratosphere to the troposphere. We then combine 11 years of December AR and ozone data in order to study the average trend of ozone transport in connection with ARs. We quantify the AR‐related ozone transport for the first time, and we find ARs with more intense water vapor transport result in the transport of higher concentrations of ozone. Quantifying ozone transport into the troposphere in connection with ARs is important as ARs may become more intense and/or more frequent with climate change, and ozone in the troposphere has consequences for the greenhouse effect. In spring 2011, columns of bromine monoxide (BrO) were retrieved over Fairbanks, Alaska using a ground‐based multifunction differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MFDOAS) instrument. MFDOAS vertical column BrO is consistently lower than retrievals from the satellite‐based Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), with a relative bias of 20 ± 14%. Numerous tropical‐based studies suggest that 5 ± 2 parts per trillion (ppt) of bromine from very short‐lived substances (VSLS) reaches the stratosphere. We evaluate upper limits on the contribution of VSLS to stratospheric bromine by treating the column retrievals of BrO as purely stratospheric and modeling the ratio of BrO to total inorganic bromine. The OMI and MFDOAS retrievals respectively present 8 and 5 ppt upper limits on the stratospheric injection of VSLS, and kinetic uncertainties in the daytime partitioning of bromine species decrease both values by ∼1.7 ppt. The OMI‐based estimate is in agreement with the 5 ppt tropical‐based value for stratospheric injection of VSLS if the tropospheric column of BrO is 1.5 × 1013 molecules cm−2 over Fairbanks, which is within the range of uncertainty of a second ground‐based instrument that monitored tropospheric BrO during the campaign. Because our ground‐based instruments detected no BrO near the surface, this value for tropospheric BrO would originate from higher altitudes in the troposphere and is in agreement with previous retrievals of background tropospheric BrO. Our calculations of tropospheric BrO over Fairbanks are most sensitive to uncertainties in the stratospheric loading of VSLS, followed by the difference between the OMI and MFDOAS retrievals of BrO. The primary focus of this study is to understand the contribution from excess moisture from crop transpiration to the severity of a heat wave episode that hit the Midwestern U.S. from 16 to 20 July 2011. To elucidate this, we first provide an optimal estimate of the transpiration water vapor flux using satellite total column water vapor retrievals whose accuracy and precision are characterized using independent observations. The posterior transpiration flux is estimated using a local ensemble transform Kalman filter that employs a mesoscale weather model as the forward model. The new estimation suggests that the prior values of transpiration flux from crops are biased high by 15%. We further use the constrained flux to examine the sensitivity of meteorology to the contributions from crops. Over the agricultural areas during daytime, elevated moisture (up to 40%) from crops not only increases humidity (thus the heat index) but also provides a positive radiative forcing by increasing downward longwave radiation (13 ± 4 W m−2) that results in even higher surface air temperature (+0.4 °C). Consequently, we find that the elevated moisture generally provides positive feedback to aggravate the heat wave, with daytime enhancements of heat index by as large as 3.3 ± 0.8 °C. Due to a strong diurnal cycle in the transpiration, the feedback tends to be stronger in the afternoon (up to 5 °C) and weaker at night. Results offer a potential basis for designing mitigation strategies for the effect of transpiration from agriculture in the future, in addition to improving the estimation of canopy transpiration. Determining effective strategies for mitigating surface ozone (O3) pollution requires knowledge of the relative ambient concentrations of its precursors, NO x, and VOCs. The space-based tropospheric column ratio of formaldehyde to NO2 (FNR) has been used as an indicator to identify NO x-limited versus NO x-saturated O3 formation regimes. Quantitative use of this indicator ratio is subject to three major uncertainties: (1) the split between NO x-limited and NO x-saturated conditions may shift in space and time, (2) the ratio of the vertically integrated column may not represent the near-surface environment, and (3) satellite products contain errors. We use the GEOS-Chem global chemical transport model to evaluate the quantitative utility of FNR observed from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument over three northern midlatitude source regions. We find that FNR in the model surface layer is a robust predictor of the simulated near-surface O3 production regime. Extending this surface-based predictor to a column-based FNR requires accounting for differences in the HCHO and NO2 vertical profiles. We compare four combinations of two OMI HCHO and NO2 retrievals with modeled FNR. The spatial and temporal correlations between the modeled and satellite-derived FNR vary with the choice of NO2 product, while the mean offset depends on the choice of HCHO product. Space-based FNR indicates that the spring transition to NO x-limited regimes has shifted at least a month earlier over major cities (e.g., New York, London, and Seoul) between 2005 and 2015. This increase in NO x sensitivity implies that NO x emission controls will improve O3 air quality more now than it would have a decade ago. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
