The experiments by Charles D. Shackelford et al, which study solute transport through compacted clay specimens assumes that the effluent data represent flux concentrations and that the solution of the advection-diffusion equation for a semi-infinite domain is appropriate. However, they should note that continuous large pores near the column exit can cause a discontinuity in cr at x=L. This situation does not occur in their experiments.

Solute transport experiments can be analyzed using the concept of column holdup. A holdup expression has been derived to analyze for single-species solute transport experiments with a nonlinear, nonequilibrium reaction. An equation involving the solid phase concentration provides the optimizing condition for the numerical solution of the transport problem and can be used to analyze the holdup process in transport experiments.
