Incorporating spent coffee grounds into single-use drinking straws for enhanced biodegradability also raises safety concerns due to increased chemical complexity. Here, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in coffee ground straws (CGS), polylactic acid straws (PLAS), and polypropylene straws (PPS) were characterized using headspace - solid-phase microextraction and migration assays, by which 430 and 153 VOCs of 10 chemical categories were identified by gas chromatography - mass spectrometry, respectively. Further, the VOCs were assessed for potential genetic toxicity by quantitative structure-activity relationship profiling and estimated daily intake (EDI) calculation, revealing that the VOCs identified in the CGS generally triggered the most structural alerts of genetic toxicity, and the EDIs of 37.9% of which exceeded the threshold of 0.15 μg person -1 d -1 , also outnumbering that of the PLAS and PPS. Finally, 14 VOCs were prioritized due to their definite hazards, and generally higher EDIs or detection frequencies in the CGS. Meanwhile, the probability of producing safer CGS was also illustrated. Moreover, it was uncovered by chemical space that the VOCs with higher risk potentials tended to gather in the region defined by the molecular descriptor related to electronegativity or octanol/water partition coefficient. The increasing amount of nondegradable petroleum-based plastic waste releases chemical hazards, posing a significant threat to the environment and human health. Chitosan, derived from marine wastes, is an attractive feedstock for the preparation of plastic replacement due to its renewable and degradable nature. However, in most cases, complex chemical modifications of chitosan or hybridization with chemicals from fossil resources are required. Herein, we present a high-performance chitosan-based polyimine vitrimer (CS-PI) through a mild and catalyst-free Schiff base reaction between chitosan and vanillin. The CS-PI were formed by integrating dynamic imine bonds into the polymer networks, resulting in superior thermo-processability and mechanical performances. The tensile strength and Young's modulus of the CS-PI films reached 38.72 MPa and 3.20 GPa, respectively, which was significantly higher than that of both commercial petroleum-based plastics and bioplastics. Additionally, the CS-PI films exhibited good light transmittance, self-healing ability, reprocess capacity, water resistance, and durability to various organic solvents. Moreover, the CS-PI films could be completely degraded under both acidic and natural conditions, enabling a sustainable circulation. Public health depends on indoor air quality (IAQ), hence soft measurement techniques must be implemented in the subway environment for more precise and reliable monitoring of indoor particulate matter concentration levels. Adaptive boosting (AdaBoost), an ensemble learning technique, is simple to code and less prone to overfitting. Compared to a single model, it is better able to take into consideration the intricate elements included in air quality data. It is suggested to use an adaptive boosting of long short-term memory (AdaBoost-LSTM) model and kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) for ensemble learning. The kernel function and PCA are first coupled to create KPCA, which is a nonlinear dimensionality reduction method for IAQ. This removes the negative impacts of noise interference. The learning performance of LSTM is then enhanced using AdaBoost as an ensemble learning technique. The KPCA-AdaBoost-LSTM model can deliver higher modeling performance, according to the results. The R 2 reached 0.9007 and 0.8995 when predicting PM 2.5 in the hall and platform. A comparison was performed on various methods detecting the volatile contaminants (VCs) in recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate) (rPET) flakes, the results demonstrated that head-space solid phase micro-extraction combined with comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatograph-tandem quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC×GC-QTOF-MS) was a sensitive, effective, accurate method, and successfully applied to analyze 57 rPET flakes collected from different recycling plants in China. A total of 212 VCs were tentatively identified, and the possible source were associated with plastic, food, and cosmetics. 45 VCs are classified as high-priority compounds with toxicity level IV or V and may pose a risk to human health. Combined chemometrics for further analysis revealed that significant differences among these three geographical recycling regions. 6, 7, and 6 volatile markers were chosen based on VIP values and S-plot among plant1 plant 2 and plant 3, respectively. The markers differed significantly between recycled rPET samples in three geographical recycling regions based on chemometrics analysis. The initial classification rate and cross-validation accuracy were 100% on the identified VCs. The capture of radioactive iodine is an inevitable requirement in nuclear industry for environmental protection. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new generation of sorbents that have wide applications for iodine adsorption and recovery. Although the loading of MOFs on wood can avoid the drawbacks of the powder form of MOFs in implementation, the dense structure of wood results in the lower loading, even after delignification, which limits the adsorption capacity. Herein, a hierarchically porous UiO-66-NH 2 @WCA composite was fabricated by in-situ synthesis of UiO-66-NH 2 in wood-derived cellulose aerogel (WCA) that was further removed hemicellulose from delignified wood. UiO-66-NH 2 @WCA exhibited a high loading (36 wt%) of UiO-66-NH 2 crystals and a high adsorption capacity of 704 mg/g for iodine vapor and 248 mg/g for iodine aqueous solution. The adsorption behavior in iodine aqueous solution was well predicted by the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption capacity of UiO-66-NH 2 @WCA was highest in solution when the pH was 6, while the ionic strength had little effect. The hydroxyl groups on the WCA matrix had a charge transfer effect with iodine, providing additional sites for iodine capture. The rationally-designed lignocellulose valorization that promotes a novel "waste-treats-pollutant" standpoint is highly desired yet still challenging for the spread of biomass industry. At this point, a cascade technique with the assistance of deep eutectic solvent (DES) fractionation is tailored to dually valorize wheat straw into fluorescent lignin carbon dots (LCDs) and bimetallic Mg-Fe oxide-decorated biochar (MBC) via solvothermal engineering and co-precipitation/pyrolysis respectively. Benefitting from the abundance of β-aryl ether and hydroxyl groups in DES-extracted lignin, the photoluminescence LCDs emit blue color in a wide excitation span, which can be adopted to selectively detect ferric ions (Fe 3+ ) in a broad dosage scale with a highly linear correlation of 10-50 μM. Taking advantages of the MBC-aided persulfate activation, we propose the efficient arbidol removal system with a universal concentration of 20-200 ppm in the scalable pH ranging from 3 to 11. The dominate migration pathways involving with active oxygen species and surface electron transfer are comprehensively studied via electron paramagnetic resonance, radical-quenching experiments, and theoretical arithmetic. Paper products are widely used in daily life, while the lack of antibacterial activity has made them become some disease transmission media. Herein, we introduced NIR-responsive molybdenum disulfide nanosheets (MoS 2 ) to endow nanocellulose paper antibacterial activity by electrostatic self-assembly with quaternized chitosan (QCS). Firstly, the MoS 2 nanosheets were exfoliated and stabilized with QCS under ultrasonication. The strong coordination between QCS and MoS 2 as well as the electrostatic attraction between QCS and cellulose nanofiber (CNF) helped to fabricate the MoS 2 @QCS/CNF composite paper. The MoS 2 @QCS/CNF composite paper exhibited excellent photothermal and photodynamic activity, achieving over 99.9% antibacterial efficacy against both E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. The hyperthermia induced by MoS 2 accelerated the glutathione (GSH) consumption and the reactive oxygen species (ROS)-independent oxidative stress destroyed the bacteria membranes integrity, synergistically leading to the malondialdehyde (MDA) oxidation and protein leakage to inhibit the bacteria growth. Importantly, the self-assembled fibrous network incorporating with the photo-stable antibacterial MoS 2 enabled the flexible composite paper with excellent mechanical strength and recyclability for long-term antimicrobial, possessing over 99.9% inhibition even after five cycles. Bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) has garnered intense attention in the field of photocatalysis for environmental remediation; however, it suffers from a high electron-hole recombination rate. In this study, for the first time, we report on a facile strategy for the creation of oxygen vacancies in BiOI via strontium (Sr 2+ ) doping. The as-prepared 0.45-SrBiOI demonstrated significantly enhanced photocatalytic degradation of indometacin under visible light exposure, which was almost 10 folds higher than pristine BiOI. This augmented photocatalytic performance was ascribed to the accelerated separation of charge carriers by oxygen vacancies, as well as Sr ion trapping electrons. Reactive species determination experiments revealed that O 2 ▪- , 1 O 2 , and h + were the dominant active species. Finally, potential indometacin degradation pathways were proposed based on the identification of degradation by-products and theoretical calculations. Air pollutions are extremely serious threats to human health and the functional hybrid filter is able to remove complicated pollutants with great potential. However, the stable structure design of hybrid filter to provide efficient filtration and adsorption performance for high temperature applications still remains a challenge. In this study, electrospun polyimide (PI) based hybrid filter was fabricated via multiple hydrogen bonding self-assembly for high-temperature air purification. In particular, Octa(amino-propylsilsesquioxane) (POSS-NH 2 ) was utilized as "bridge" for the surface activation of PI fiber, and then amino-functionalized Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (NH 2 -ZIF-8) nanocrystals were anchored on the fiber surface through hydrogen bonding. On account of the synergistic effect of the interception effect of fibers and the electrostatic interaction of NH 2 -ZIF-8 nanocrystals, the as-obtained PI-POSS@ZIF hybrid filter possessed excellent filtration performance with a high PM0.3 removal efficiency of 99.28% and a low pressure drop of 49.21 Pa at high temperature of 280 °C. Renewable lignocellulosic biomass can be effectively transformed to value-added products, enabling fast growth of related downstream processing. However, valorization of the by-produced cellulose-poor fraction, which is also in large volumes, is only occasionally reported regarding existing technologies. Here, a simple, general, and effective strategy for fabricating graphene quantum dots (GQDs) from the Miscanthus (MC) biorefinery waste consisting of sugars and depolymerized lignin, is developed. This process involves the fast and selective removal of most lignin and hemicellulose based on mild acid hydrotrope fractionation, with followed hydrothermal carbonization. The as-fabricated MC-derived GQDs (M-GQDs) exhibit several advantages such as few-layer graphene-like single crystalline structure, sulfur and nitrogen co-doping, bright fluorescence, excitation-dependent photoluminescence, and long fluorescence lifetime (11.95 ns). Furthermore, M-GQDs present prominent fluorescence reduction in the presence of Fe 3+ with good linearity (≤0.995) and very low detection limit (≥1.41 nM). Later, it is found that the observed high sensitivity for Fe 3+ is based on a dynamic quenching mechanism, which is caused by the Fe 3+ -induced increase in both the energy dissipation and photogenerated electron consumption. Effective removal of Cr(VI) pollution from aquatic environment is in pressing need because of the detrimental effect of Cr(VI) to human health. Herein, we report a facile two-step approach to synthesis MoS 2 /Lignin-derived Carbon (MoS 2 @LDC) nanocomposites for highly efficient elimination of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. The MoS 2 @LDC exhibited outstanding removal efficient for Cr(VI) (198.70 mg/g at pH = 2.0, T = 298.15 K and C Initial = 20.0 mg/L). 99.35% of Cr(VI) can be removed by the composites in 30 min. Thermodynamic and kinetic studies suggest the removal of Cr(VI) is through both adsorption and reduction. The performance of MoS 2 @LDC can be further enhanced by hydrogen plasma treatments, which was attributed to the sulfur vacancies induced improvement in the reduction activity of MoS 2 layer. A novel core/shell C-TiO 2 /CoTiO 3 type II heterojunction was successfully synthesized via a direct calcination method by using MIL-125/Co core-shell nanocakes as a sacrificial template and precursor. In the calcination process, the organic ligand in MIL-125 acts as an in-situ carbon doping source to form a carbon-doped TiO 2 core (C-TiO 2 ). At the same time, CoTiO 3 nanoparticles are formed on the surface of C-TiO 2 by an in-situ solid-state reaction between the C-TiO 2 and Co 2+ shell of MIL-125/Co. Due to such delicate core/shell structural features, carbon doping and type II heterojunctions, C-TiO 2 /CoTiO 3 core/shell composites can effectively harvest visible light, facilitate the interfacial separation and suppress the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, leading to the remarkable photocatalytic activity for removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP). In particular, C-TiO 2 /CoTiO 3 -3 exhibits the best photocatalytic degradation activity of CIP with a degradation efficiency of 99.6% and a total carbon content removal percentage of 76% under visible-light illumination for 120 min. In addition, the proposed photocatalytic mechanism study illustrated that the main radical species in the photocatalytic degradation of CIP using C-TiO 2 /CoTiO 3 as the photocatalyst is •OH. Due to the high demand of paper and related items, pulp and paper industry is flourishing day by day. With increased production, come the hazards associated with the toxic elements present in the effluents. Various microorganisms are currently employed in the remediation of these toxic effluents. In addition, various techniques like ozonation, electrocoagulation, UV treatment, Fenton's reagent, and photo-Fenton based techniques are used in advanced oxidation processes to reduce these toxins from effluents. This review highlights various above mentioned advanced techniques and innovative processes along with the biological remediation of these toxic effluents with the help of some potential microbial consortia or their combinatory effects. Moreover, the present review will also disclose the ideas on utilizing the tools of metabolic engineering, systems biology, and artificial intelligence towards microbial engineering for relatively better bioremediation processes. In the future, these techniques might be helpful in increasing the capability of microbial consortia towards detoxification of effluents to make them environmentally safe. Electroplating effluent contaminated with heavy metals posed a major threat on the aquatic ecosystems. The effect of the sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) enriched sludge on simultaneous removals of sulfate and nickel was identified. Batch tests showed that SRB biogenic precipitation could completely eliminate the nickel (100 %) with sodium lactate as carbon source at pH 7 within 3 d, and enhanced in the presence of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ , while inhibited at high concentrations. The formation of NiS 2 (confirmed by XRD, EDS and FTIR) indicated that the nickel was removed mainly through chemical bond. RDA analysis showed that COD/S ratios and the iron had the greatest influence on the performance. High-throughput sequencing indicated that the SRB enriched sludge was dominant with Desulfovibiro (43.3 %) at genus level. Finally, a pilot-scale experiment with SRB biological precipitation demonstrated that it could partially replace chemical precipitation for removing sulfate and nickel, and greatly improved the removals of ammonia-N, total nitrogen and total phosphorus in the sequential Anaerobic-Anoxic-Oxic process. This approach could greatly minimize the secondary contamination and chemicals dosing for pH adjusting and chemical coagulation. Therefore, SRB-based metal removal performance is a promising technology to realize a high-rate and low-cost process for treating practical sulfate rich metal-laden wastewater. VOCs in paper mills have severely exceeded the emission standards and their photo-catalytic degradations should focus on the experimental and theoretical studies. This work used TiO 2 colloid as catalyst to study the photo-catalytic degradations of mixed HCHO and C 6 H 6 at five mixing ratios. The adsorption behaviors of pure forms and mixtures on the TiO 2 (101) surface were simulated using density functional theory (DFT), and their catalytic reaction mechanisms were also analyzed. The following results were found: (1) With increasing initial concentration, the enhanced adsorption and easy degradation interpreted the increased degradation rate for pure HCHO, while the counteractions of enhanced adsorption and inhibited catalytic reaction kept the constant degradation rate for pure C 6 H 6 . (2) For their mixtures, the HCHO degradation was inhibited at high C 6 H 6 concentration due to the inhibited adsorption and catalytic reaction of HCHO. The C 6 H 6 degradation was slightly weakened at high HCHO concentration and then restored to the normal degradation rate of C 6 H 6 , which could be attributed to the weakened adsorption of C 6 H 6 and the easy degradation of HCHO in the initial stage. Formaldehyde (FA) is a chemical substance with tremendously noxious feature for human health and it causes serious damages to living organisms. The recognition of formaldehyde in the form of fluorescent signals has been extensively explored by using a few molecular scaffolds in buffer mediums. In particular, the study for sensing of formaldehyde both in solution and solid state has generated considerable interests. Herein, a new ratiometric fluorescent probe 1-(5-(9-phenyl-9H-carbazol-3-yl)thiophen-2-yl)but-3-en-1-amine (SO-GJP) has been synthesized for selective detection of FA based on aza-Cope reaction. In the presence of FA from 0 to 1.3 mM, the emission band of SO-GJP varies from 393 nm to 542 nm and the detection limit has been calculated to be 1.55 μM. The entrapment of SO-GJP onto the thin layer chromatography (TLC) plate leads to the successful detection of FA with sensitive color change from white to yellow. Moreover, the response mechanism has been explained by FA-induced 2-aza-Cope rearrangement within SO-GJP and the chemical processes are supported by density functional theory, fluorescence and UV-vis spectra. A rotating advanced oxidation contactor (RAOC) equipped with activated carbon (AC)/TiO 2 composite sheets for 1,4-dioxane removal from biologically treated landfill leachate (BTLL) was developed. The performance of the RAOC in 1,4-dioxane removal was compared to that of a TiO 2 slurry reactor by evaluating the removal efficiencies in pure water (PW) and the BTLL. In the TiO 2 slurry reactor, 1,4-dioxane was hardly degraded in the BTLL during 66 h of treatment because of strong inhibition by coexisting substances in the BTLL. In contrast, the RAOC successfully removed 1,4-dioxane from the BTLL by 89% through adsorption and by 81% through photocatalysis during treatment for 66 h. The ratio of the rate constants for degrading 1,4-dioxane in the BTLL and PW by the RAOC was two orders of magnitude higher than that for a TiO 2 slurry reactor. This shows that the RAOC greatly mitigated the inhibition by coexisting substances in the BTLL. The electrical energy required for 1,4-dioxane degradation in the BTLL by the RAOC was much lower than that required for degradation by the TiO 2 slurry reactor. Electrospun nanofibers have a wide range of applications due to their unique miniature size and accompanying ultra-high specific surface area. Polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) is a kind of hydrophilic materials, and hence its nanofiber morphology prepared by electrospinning disappeared after solution immersing. In the present work, crosslinked PVA nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning and then employing glutaraldehyde vapor crosslinking to improve their water resistance and mechanical properties. As an application, these nanofibers were used to adsorb Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ according to varying crosslinking time and different concentrations of ionic solution. It was observed the crosslinked PVA nanofiber films maintained good fiber morphology after adsorption, while the nanofiber morphology of uncrosslinked samples was lost. The stability of the crosslinked nanofiber films in water was improved, the adsorption equilibrium time of Pb 2+ decreased from 30 h to 10 h while the equilibrium adsorption time of Cu 2+ decreased from 15 h to 5 h, and the tensile strength of the nanofiber films with crosslinking time of 20 h was 7.99 MPa, which was 240% higher than that of the nanofiber with crosslinking time of 1 h, indicating higher efficiency., (Copyright © 2019. With the short-term exposure to Fe 2+ , the mechanism of autotrophic denitrification and sulfide oxidation and the correlation between microbial community changes and environmental factors have been explored in the ADSOB process. RSM was used to optimize conditions for the maximum nitrate reduction and sulfide oxidation. About 88% of nitrate could be autotrophically denitrified to nitrogen by utilizing sulfide as the electron donor with the molar ratio C/N of 1.14 and S/N of 0.99 at pH 7.1. Lower Fe 2+ additions can reduce TDS inhibition with dissolved sulfide to form FeS precipitates, while high amount of Fe 2+ limited the mass transfer of NO 3 - and intermediate products such as S 0 may be generated. High-throughput sequencing and RDA analysis revealed the correlation between ferrous iron, environmental factors and microorganisms. Sulfurospirillum, Rhodanobacter, Thauera and Thiobacillus were all slightly promoted at NFL level and inhibited at NFH level. And the narrow angles of the arrows indicated that Thauera, Sulfurospirillum and Thiobacillus were positively correlated with SO 4 2- concentrations, while large angles indicated these bacteria were inversely related with TDS and NO 3 - arrows, which further confirmed that these bacteria played a dominant role in the ADSOB process, and can reduce NO 3 - by the oxidation of TDS. Gaussian process regression (GPR), as an efficient nonlinear modeling method, can effectively interpret the complicated features of industrial data by using composite covariance functions derived from base kernels. In this work, an accurate GPR soft sensor with the sum of squared-exponential covariance function and periodic covariance function is proposed to capture the time varying and periodic characteristics in the subway IAQ data. The results demonstrate that the prediction performance of the proposed GPR model is superior to that of the traditional soft sensors consisting of partial least squares, back propagation artificial neural networks, and least squares support vector regression (LSSVR). More specifically, the values of root mean square error, mean absolute percentage error, and coefficient of determination are improved by 12.35%, 9.53%, and 40.05%, respectively, in comparison with LSSVR., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) could form stable complexes with toxic metals such as nickel due to its strong chelation. The three-dimensional (3D) macroporous graphene aerogels (GA), which was in-situ assembled by reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets on titanium wire as binder-free electrode, was presented as cathode for the degradation of EDTA-Ni in Electro-Fenton process. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) results indicated 3D GA formed three dimensional architecture with large and homogenous macropore structure and surface area. Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), Linear Sweep Voltammetry (LSV) and Rotating Ring-disk Electrode (RRDE) results showed that the 3D GA cathode at pH 3 displayed the highest current density and electrochemical active surface area (ECSA), and better two-electron selectivity for ORR than other pH value, confirming the 3D-GA cathode at pH 3 has the highest electrocatalytic activity and generates more H 2 O 2 . The factors such as pH, applied current density, concentration of Fe 2+ , Na 2 SO 4, and aeration rates of air were also investigated. Under the optimum conditions, 73.5% of EDTA-Ni was degraded after reaction for 2h. Mechanism analysis indicated that the production of OH on the 3D GA cathode played an important role in the removal of EDTA-Ni in the 3D GA-EF process, where the direct regeneration of Fe 2+ on the cathode would greatly reduce the consumption of H 2 O 2 . Removal efficiencies of sulfamonomethoxine (SMM) and its degradation intermediates formed by treatment with zeolite/TiO 2 composites through adsorption and photocatalysis were investigated in fresh aquaculture wastewater (FAWW). Coexistent substances in the FAWW showed no inhibitory effects against SMM adsorption. Although coexistent substances in the FAWW inhibited the photocatalytic decomposition of SMM, the composites mitigated the inhibition, possibly because of concentration of SMM on their surface by adsorption. LC/MS/MS analyses revealed that hydroxylation of amino phenyl and pyrimidinyl portions, transformation of the amino group in the amino phenyl portion into a nitroso group, and substitution of the methoxy group with a hydroxyl group occurring in the initial reaction resulted in the formation of various intermediates during the photocatalysis of SMM. All detected intermediates had a ring structure, and almost all intermediates disappeared at the same time SMM was completely decomposed. Ph-OH formed by hydroxylation of the phenyl portion was detected upon decomposition of SMM during photocatalysis. The removal of Ph-OH by the composites proceeded more rapidly than that by TiO 2 alone under ultraviolet irradiation. A novel nanocomposite based on black wattle (BW) tannin and nanocellulose was prepared and applied in heavy metal ions adsorptive removal from aqueous solutions. Firstly, nanocrystalline cellulose was oxidized by sodium periodate to get dialdehyde nanocellulose (DANC). BW tannin was then covalently immobilized onto DANC, which was used as both the matrix and crosslinker, to obtain tannin-nanocellulose (TNCC) composite. The resulting nanocomposite was characterized using FTIR, AFM, and TG. The successful immobilization was confirmed by the chromogenic reaction between FeCl 3 and TNCC and FT-IR analysis. AFM images revealed that TNCC was ellipsoidal particles with lengths ranging from 100-400nm. Zeta potential measurement showed that TNCC was negative charged at a pH range from 1-12. Compared to the original tannin, the thermal stability of TNCC was slightly increased by the addition of nanocellulose. TNCC demonstrated the maximum adsorption efficiency at pH2 for Cr(VI) and pH 6 for Cu(II) and Pb(II), respectively. The adsorption for these three metal ions followed pseudo second-order kinetics, indicating the chemisorption nature. The adsorption isotherms all fitted well with the Sips model, and the calculated maximum adsorption capacities were 51.846mgg -1 , 53.371mgg -1 and 104.592mgg -1 for Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cr (VI), respectively., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. A one-pot bio-iron system was established to investigate synergetic abiotic and biotic effects between iron and microorganisms on Cr(VI) removal. More diverse iron corrosion and reactive solids, such as green rusts, lepidocrocite and magnetite were found in the bio-iron system than in the Fe 0 -H 2 O system, leading to 4.3 times higher Cr(VI) removal efficiency in the bio-iron system than in the Fe 0 -H 2 O system. The cycling experiment also showed that the Cr(VI) removal capacity of Fe 0 in the bio-iron system was 12.4 times higher than that in the Fe 0 -H 2 O system. A 62days of life-span could be achieved in the bio-iron system, while the Fe 0 -H 2 O system lost its efficacy after 30days. Enhanced effects of extra Fe 2+ on Cr(VI) removal was observed, largely contributed to the adsorbed Fe 2+ on iron surface, which could function as an extra reductant for Cr(VI) and promote the electron transfer on the solid phase. The results also showed that the reduction of Cr(VI) by microorganisms was insignificant, indicating the adsorption/co-precipitation of Cr by iron oxides on iron surface was responsible for the overall Cr(VI) removal. In this work, a new effective and relatively stable heterogeneous catalyst of Metal-Organic Framework Co3(BTC)2·12H2O (Co-BTC) has been synthesized and tested to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for removal of refractory dibutyl phthalate (DBP). Co-BTC(A) and Co-BTC(B) were synthesized by different methods, which resulted in different activity towards PMS. The results indicated that Co-BTC(A) showed better performance on DBP degradation. The highest degradation rate of 100% was obtained within 30min. The initial pH showed respective level on DBP degradation with a rank of 5.0>2.75>9.0>7.0>11.0 in PMS/Co-BTC(A) system. No remarkable reduction of DBP was observed in the catalytic activity of Co-BTC(A) at 2nd run as demonstrated by recycling. However, the DBP degradation efficiency decreased by 8.26%, 10.9% and 25.6% in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th runs, respectively. The loss of active catalytic sites of Co(II) from Co-BTC(A) is responsible for the activity decay. Sulfate radicals (SO4(-)) and hydroxyl radicals (OH) were found at pH 2.75. Here, we propose the possible mechanism for activation of PMS by Co-BTC(A), which is involved in homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions in the solutions and the surface of Co-BTC(A), respectively., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. Developing accurate soft sensors to predict and monitor the indoor air quality (IAQ) of hazardous pollutants that accumulate in underground metro systems is of key importance. The just-in-time (JIT) learning technique possesses a local feature that can track the variations in the dynamic process more effectively, which is different from the traditional soft sensor modeling methods, such as partial least squares (PLS), which models the process in an offline and global way. In this study, a robust soft sensor that combined the JIT learning technique with a least squares support vector regression (LSSVR) method, named JIT-LSSVR, was derived in order to improve the prediction performance of a PM2.5 soft sensor in a subway station. Additionally, in order to eliminate the adverse effects caused by the outliers in the process variables, an outlier detection step was integrated into the JIT-LSSVR modeling procedure. The performance evaluation results demonstrated that the proposed robust JIT-LSSVR soft sensor has the capability to model nonlinear and dynamic subway systems. Novel, highly ordered layered graphene oxide (GO) membranes with larger interlayer spacing were prepared by induced directional flow and were used as adsorbents for the removal of Cu(2+), Cd(2+) and Ni(2+) from aqueous solutions. The effects of pH, ionic strength, contact time, metal ion concentration and cycle time on Cu(2+), Cd(2+) and Ni(2+) sorption were investigated. The results indicated that the adsorption of Cu(2+), Cd(2+) and Ni(2+) onto GO membranes was greatly influenced by the pH and weakly affected by the ionic strength. The adsorption isotherms for Cu(2+), Cd(2+) and Ni(2+) were well fitted by the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities of the GO membranes for Cu(2+), Cd(2+) and Ni(2+) were approximately 72.6, 83.8 and 62.3 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption kinetics of Cu(2+), Cd(2+) and Ni(2+) onto GO membranes followed the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption equilibrium was reached in a shorter time. The GO membranes can be regenerated more than six times based on their adsorption/desorption cycles, with a slight loss in the adsorption capacity. Effects of pH, ionic strength and DOM on the sorption and desorption of triclosan (TCS) in sediment-water-rhamnolipid systems were systematically investigated through controlled batch experiments. Results showed that solubilization enhancement of TCS by rhamnolipid was higher in acid pH range than in alkaline pH range and was the highest at the ionic strength of 5×10(-2) M. Sorption of rhamnolipid onto sediment decreased with the increase of pH while the result was contrary to ionic strength. Moreover, the apparent distribution coefficients of TCS (Kd(*)) decreased from 73.35 to 32.30 L/kg with an increase of solution pH, as varying pH had significant influence on sorption of RL onto sediment and degree of ionization of TCS. Rhamnolipid presented the largest distribution capacity of TCS into the aqueous phase at moderate ionic strength (5×10(-2) M) with the Kd(*) of 17.26 L/kg. Further results also indicated that the presence of humic acid in aqueous phase could increase the desorption of TCS from contaminated sediment. The desorption enhancement was much higher in the system containing both rhamnolipid and DOM than in the single system. A novel photobioelectrochemical system (PBES) was developed by acclimating algal-bacterial biofilm in both anode and cathode using Chlorella vulgaris and indigenous wastewater bacteria as inoculums. The PBES was operated in polarity reversion mode depend on dark/light alternate reaction to achieve simultaneous pH self-neutralization, azo dye degradation (Congo red) and bioelectricity generation. The anodic accumulated acidity and cathodic accumulated alkalinity were self-neutralized after polarity reversion and hence eliminate the membrane pH gradient. The Congo red was first decolored in the dark anode and the resultant decolorization liquid was subsequently mineralized after the dark anode changing to the photo-biocathode. The presence of C. vulgaris significantly enhanced the two-stage degradation of Congo red, with 93% increases in decolorization rates and 8% increases in mineralization compared to the algae-free BES. The PBES continuously generated stable voltage output over four months under repeatedly reversion of polarity. The maximum power density produced before and after polarity reversion was 78 and 61 mW/m(2), respectively. The synergy between C. vulgaris and mixed bacteria was responsible for the successful operation of the PBES which can be potentially applied to treat wastewater containing azo dye with benefits of enhanced azo dye degradation, high net power output and buffer minimization., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Column-type combined reactors were designed to cultivate micro-aerobic pentachlorophenol (PCP) degrading granular sludge under oxygen-limited conditions (0.1-0.2 mgL(-1)) over 39-day experimental period. Micro-aerobic granular had both anaerobic activity (SMA: 2.34 mMCH4/hg VSS) and aerobic activity (SOUR: 2.21 mMO2/hg VSS). Metabolite analysis results revealed that PCP was sequentially dechlorinated to TCP, DCP, and eventually to MCP. Methanogens were not directly involved in the dechlorination of PCP, but might played a vital role in stabilizing the overall structure of the granule sludge. For Eubacteria, the Shannon Index (2.09 in inoculated granular sludge) increased both in micro-aerobic granular sludge (2.61) and PCP-degradation granular sludge (2.55). However, for Archaea, it decreased from 2.53 to 1.85 and 1.84, respectively. Although the Shannon Index demonstrated slight difference between micro-aerobic granular sludge and PCP-degradation granular sludge, the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) indicated obvious variance of the microbial composition, revealing significant effect of micro-aerobic condition and PCP on microbial community. Furthermore, nucleotide sequencing indicated that the main microorganisms for PCP degradation might be related to Actinobacterium and Sphingomonas. TiO(2)/high-silica zeolite composite synthesized by a sol-gel method was applied for the removal of sulfamethazine (SMT) antibiotic from water, and simple models including both adsorption and photocatalytic decomposition were developed. In this study, two types of models were constructed: a synergistic model that included the interaction between the zeolite and TiO(2) in the composite, and an individual model, which did not include the interaction. We obtained rate constants for adsorption, desorption and photocatalytic decomposition experimentally, and compared them with the results calculated using the synergistic and individual models. The individual model predicted that ca. 55% of SMT would be removed from the system after 6h of treatment; however, our experiments showed that 80% of the SMT was removed, suggesting the existence of another reaction pathway. Therefore, a synergistic model was constructed, in which, part of the SMT was adsorbed onto the zeolite within the composite, desorbed from the zeolite and migrated to the TiO(2), and was then photocatalytically decomposed. Experiments were carried out with varying amounts of the TiO2-zeolite composite, and the synergistic model was validated. We estimated that 10% of the desorbed SMT was photocatalytically decomposed without being released into the water. When TiO(2)-zeolite composite concentrations were 0.04, 0.12 and 0.20g/L, and the treatment time was 6h, the proportions of the total decomposition of SMT that occurred via this synergistic reaction pathway were calculated as 52.2%, 58.6% and 66.7%, respectively. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess unique properties desirable for delivery of drugs and gaseous therapeutics, but their uncharacterized interactions with cells raise increasing concerns of their safety in such biomedical applications. We evaluated the adverse effects of zinc nanoscale MOFs on the cell morphology, cytoskeleton, cell viability and expression of neurotrophin signaling pathway-associated GAP-43 protein in rat pheochromocytoma PC12 cells. At the concentration of 25 μg/ml, zinc MOFs did not significantly affect morphology, viability and membrane integrity of the cells. But at higher concentrations (over 100 μg/ml), MOFs exhibited a time- and concentration-dependent cytotoxicity, indicating their entry into the cells via endocytosis where they release Zn(2+) into the cytosol to cause increased intracellular concentration of Zn(2+). We demonstrated that the toxicity of MOFs was associated with a disrupted cellular zinc homeostasis and down-regulation of GAP-43 protein, which might be the underlying mechanism for the improved differentiation in PC12 cells. Utilization potential of membrane filtration retentate (concentrate) of bleach plant effluent from paper industry, in bricks production, was investigated in the present study. Bricks were prepared by using retentate of membrane filtration in place of water. The physical properties measured for bricks were dimensions, density, moisture content, compressive strength, water absorption and porosity. Chemical analysis of the bricks was performed for water leachability and acid leachability, using ASTM Standard methods D 3987-06 and D 5233-92 respectively. The leachate samples were analyzed for Al, Cu, Fe, Co, Cr, Pb, Ni and Zn using AAS (atomic absorption spectrophotometer). Adsorbable organic halides (AOX) of leachate were analyzed by using AOX analyzer model ECS 1200 using column method. It was observed that the physical and chemical properties of bricks especially fire clay bricks were not adversely affected by the use of wastewater. To study the fast kinetic decolourisation of textile dyes by ozone a continuous quench-flow system was used. This system has not been used before for these purposes. Reaction times in the range of 7-3000 ms were explored. The reaction was quenched with potassium iodide, which proved to be very effective, and the indigo method was used to follow the ozone concentration. Dyes from the most representative chemical classes currently used in the textile industry, i.e. azo and anthraquinone, were selected. Using the initial slope method, the effect of dye and ozone concentrations was researched and the kinetic equations thus established. Using tert-butyl alcohol, as radical scavenger, and pH close to 2.5, the second-order rate constant of the reactant dyes at 280 K varies in the range of 1.20x10(4)-7.09x10(5)M(-1)s(-1); the Acid Orange 7 exhibiting thus its lowest value, the Acid Blue 45 its highest value and the Acid Green 25 and 27 and Direct Yellow 4 intermediate values (approximately 1.6x10(5)M(-1)s(-1)). Without radical scavenger and the pH close to 4, the reaction rate increases one order of magnitude, but, on the reverse, the efficiency of ozone to decolourisation decreases., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier B.V. Using an enzyme-based stage involving a xylanase (X) or laccase (as part of a laccase-mediator system, L) in a bleaching process can help reduce reagent consumption and hence its environmental impact. In this work, both types of enzymes were applied to eucalypt pulp. The influence of process variables in the laccase-mediator treatment (viz. laccase dose, HBT dose and reaction time) was assessed by using a three-variable sequential statistical plan. The effect of a pretreatment with X on the previous variables was also assessed. Kappa number and brightness models for the L stage and XL sequence were found to perform disparately, which suggests the formation of lignin derivatives interfering with brightness measurements. The L system oxidized readily accessible lignin within the first hours of treatment and affected the contents in cellulose and hexenuronic acids (HexA) of the resulting pulp. Xylanase facilitated access of the laccase-HBT system to lignin and HexA in cellulose fibres. The L treatment increased effluent properties such as Microtox toxicity, COD and colour, and led to strong inactivation of the enzyme. In this article, the use of low-cost adsorbents for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from solution has been reviewed. Adsorption techniques are widely used to remove certain classes of pollutants from waters, especially those which are not easily biodegradable. The removal of MB, as a pollutant, from waste waters of textile, paper, printing and other industries has been addressed by the researchers. Currently, a combination of biological treatment and adsorption on activated carbon is becoming more common for removal of dyes from wastewater. Although commercial activated carbon is a preferred adsorbent for color removal, its widespread use is restricted due to its relatively high cost which led to the researches on alternative non-conventional and low-cost adsorbents. The purpose of this review article is to organize the scattered available information on various aspects on a wide range of potentially low-cost adsorbents for MB removal. These include agricultural wastes, industrial solid wastes, biomass, clays minerals and zeolites. Agricultural waste materials being highly efficient, low cost and renewable source of biomass can be exploited for MB remediation. The anaerobic biodegradation of textile chemicals was evaluated with inocula grown under mesophilic (37+/-2 degrees C) or thermophilic (55+/-2 degrees C) conditions, on glucose (glucose-grown) or acetate (acetate-grown) as sole carbon sources. Wool dyebath chemicals (acetic acid, a liposomal surfactant, a synthetic amphoteric surfactant), single or as binary acetate-surfactant mixtures, were used as test carbon sources, in the presence or absence of Acid Orange 7 as model dye. First, the two mesophilic inocula (glucose- or acetate-grown) were compared relatively to lag-phase durations, specific biogas production rates, biogas yields and overall COD removal yields. In some runs, sulphide and/or the model dye were included, to test for inhibition effects. Then, the two glucose-grown inocula (mesophilic and thermophilic) were assessed in batch biodegradation tests with the same carbon feeds. The kinetics for substrate-COD and dye colour removal were described and quantified using a pseudo-first order model. The presence of dye had no effect on performance parameters for all substrates tested. Acetoclastic methanogens seemingly played an important role in biogas production from the liposomal additive, but less so from the synthetic surfactant. The association of acetate and surfactants apparently introduced mutual inhibitory effects on the rates of biogas production, substrate uptake and dye decolourisation.

Batch experiments were conducted on the degradation of synthetic and municipal wastewater by six different strains, i.e., Agrobacterium sp., Bacillus sp., Enterobacter cloacae, Gordonia, Pseudomonas stutzeri, Pseudomonas putida. By applying a fractional factorial design (FFD) of experiments, the influence of each strain and their interactions were quantified. An empirical model predicting the treatment efficiency was built based on the results of the FFD experiments with an R(2) value of 99.39%. For single strain, Enterobacter cloacae, Gordonia and P. putida (p=0.008, 0.009 and 0.023, respectively) showed significant enhancement on organic removal in the synthetic wastewater. Positive interaction from Enterobacter cloacae, Gordonia (p=0.046) was found, indicating that syntrophic interaction existed, and their coexistence can improve total organic carbon (TOC) degradation. Verification experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of bioaugmentation by introducing three selected strains into an activated sludge reactor for treating municipal wastewater. The removal efficiency of TOC with the bioaugmentation was increased from 67-72% to 80-84% at an influent TOC concentration of 200mg/L. The results derived from this study indicate that the FFD is a useful screening tool for optimizing the microbial community to enhance treatment efficiency.

The present study proposed the use of meranti sawdust in the removal of Cu(II), Cr(III), Ni(II) and Pb(II) ions from synthetic aqueous solutions. Batch adsorption studies showed that meranti sawdust was able to adsorb Cu(II), Cr(III), Ni(II) and Pb(II) ions from aqueous solutions in the concentration range 1-200mg/L. The adsorption was favoured with maximum adsorption at pH 6, whereas the adsorption starts at pH 1 for all metal ions. The effects of contact time, initial concentration of metal ions, adsorbent dosage and temperature have been reported. The applicability of Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherm was tried for the system to completely understand the adsorption isotherm processes. The adsorption kinetics tested with pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models yielded high R(2) values from 0.850 to 0.932 and from 0.991 to 0.999, respectively. The meranti sawdust was found to be cost effective and has good efficiency to remove these toxic metal ions from aqueous solution.
