In Southern China, the co-occurrence of arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) contamination in soils around Sb mines presents an environmental challenge. During the flooding period of mining-impacted soils, anaerobic reduction of iron (Fe) oxides enhances the mobilization and bioavailability of Sb and As, further elevating the risk of Sb and As entering the food chain. To address this problem, activated carbon (AC) and biochar (BC) were applied to remediate flooded mining-impacted soils. Our results explored that AC can significantly decrease mobilization by 9–97 % for Sb and 9–67 % for As through inhibiting Fe(III) mineral reduction and dissolution in flooded soils. In contrast, there was no significant effect of BC. This was attributed to the strong adsorption of soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) by AC compared to BC, while DOM as electron shuttle is crucial for microbial Fe(III) reduction. Consequently, the DOM sequestration by AC effectively mitigates Sb and As leaching in contaminated mining soils. Heavy metals (HMs) in drinking water have drawn worldwide attention due to their risks to public health; however, a systematic assessment of the occurrence of HMs in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) at a large geographical scale across China and the removal efficiency, human health risks, and the correlation with environmental factors have yet to be established. Therefore, this study characterised the occurrence patterns of nine conventional dissolved HMs in the influent and effluent water samples from 146 typical DWTPs in seven major river basins across China (which consist of the Yangtze River, the Yellow River, the Songhua River, the Pearl River, the Huaihe River, the Liaohe River and the Haihe River) for the first time and removal efficiency, probabilistic health risks, and the correlation with water quality. According to the findings, a total of eight HMs (beryllium (Be), antimony (Sb), barium (Ba), molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), vanadium (V), cobalt (Co) and titanium (Ti)) were detected, with detection frequencies in influent and effluent water ranging from 2.90 (Mo) to 99.30% (Ba) and 1.40 (Ti) to 97.90% (Ba), respectively. The average concentration range was 0.41 (Be)− 77.36 (Sb) μg/L. Among them, Sb (exceeding standard rate 8%), Ba (2.89%), Ni (21.43%), and V (1.33%) were exceeded the national standard (GB5749–2022). By combining Spearman's results and redundancy analysis, our results revealed a close correlation among pH, turbidity (TURB), potassium permanganate index (COD Mn), and total nitrogen (TN) along with the concentration and composition of HMs. In addition, the concentration of HMs in finished water was strongly affected by the concentration of HMs in raw water, as evidenced by the fact that HMs in surface water poses a risk to the quality of finished water. Metal concentration was the primary factor in assessing the health risk of a single metal, and the carcinogenic risk of Ba, Mo, Ni, and Sb should be paid attention to. In DWTPs, the removal efficiencies of various HMs also vary greatly, with an average removal rate ranging from 16.30% to 95.64%. In summary, our findings provide insights into the water quality and health risks caused by HMs in drinking water. The Xikuangshan (XKS) mine, the world's largest antimony (Sb) mine, was chosen for a detailed Sb isotopic signature study owing to its historical Sb contamination of water systems. Hydrochemical data, in particularδ123Sb values, were analyzed to identify the Sb source and predominant geochemical processes that affect Sb mobilization in different waters. The δ123Sb values of waters from the XKS Sb mine range from − 0.20‰ to + 0.73‰. In particular, the δ123Sb values of the main Feishuiyan stream do not significantly vary (+0.19‰-+0.24‰), while those of groundwater in different aquifers (−0.08‰ to +0.73‰) and mine water in different adits (−0.20‰ to +0.37‰) vary over a wide range. The relationships between δ123Sb values and Sb concentrations indicate that a simple dilution of Sb and a weak Sb adsorption onto Fe/Mn suspended particles and sediments in the Feishuiyan stream may occur, oxidative weathering and leaching infiltration of Sb-containing waste rocks and slags may cause variations in the δ123Sb values in groundwater, and Sb mobilization in the mine water is influenced by a combination of processes (oxidative dissolution, adsorption of Fe/Mn (hydr)oxides, and mixing). A conceptual hydrogeochemical model was summarized to elucidate the Sb source and mobilization in water systems from the XKS Sb mine. Mining activities can result in serious contamination of soil by heavy metal(loid)s. In this study, the sources and spatial distribution of metal(loid)s, and the risks to public health from these metal(loid)s at an abandoned arsenic mine site were explored. The mean concentrations of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), antimony (Sb), strontium (Sr), and thallium (Tl) in the soil in the mining area were higher than the mean background values. The main pollutants from the mining activities were As, Hg, and Sb. Five pollutant sources were identified using an approach that combined statistical methods, a positive matrix factorization model, and historical information analysis. As, Hg, Sb, and Tl were associated with the mining resources and related activities (37.29%); Mn (15.57%) and Sr (15.96%) were mainly from crustal origin and pedogenesis, respectively; Pb, Sb, and Tl were mainly from industrial sources (17.57%), and Cd was mainly from the production and application of phosphorous fertilizer (13.60%). Using incremental spatial autocorrelation crystallized that As, Hg, and Sb were mainly contained within 500 m of their source. There were formed existing non-carcinogenic hazards and carcinogenic risks from As, and potential carcinogenic risks from Cd, in the soil for those living locally.
