Reactive black 5 (RB5), an azo dye, was degraded by using UV-irradiated TiO 2 coated on non woven paper with SiO 2 as a binder. The adsorption capacity of the photocatalyst was studied at natural pH, superior to pH pzc of the binder, for various ionic strengths. Different salts such as NaCl, KCl, CaCl 2 , LiCl, Ca(NO 3 ) 2 were used to increase the ionic strength. The presence of salt increased the adsorption capacity. The electrostatic interactions between dye and oxide surface charges (TiO 2 /SiO 2 ) is very important in the adsorption phenomena. The effect of the ionic strength of the solution on photocatalyst degradation was studied. The rate of degradation was increased by the presence of salts in the range of the experimental conditions. The increase of the initial decolorization rate was observed in the following order: Ca 2+ > K + > Na + > Li + . Experiments with different anions (Cl − , NO 3 − ) had shown that nitrate was an indifferent electrolyte for the adsorption and photodegradation of the dye on SiO 2 /TiO 2 .

Pulp and paper mill wastewater is characterized by very high chemical oxygen demand (COD) values that inhibit the activity of microorganisms during biological oxidations. The electrochemical degradation of pulp and paper mill wastewater catalyzed by molybdenum and phosphate (Mo–P) modified kaolin with graphite as anode and cathode was investigated. The catalyst was characterized by XRD, XPS and SEM spectra and the effects of pH, metal ion and introduction of NaCl on the efficiency of the electrochemical degradation process were also studied. It was found out that the modified kaolin loaded with Fe 3+ had higher electrochemical catalytic activity in the electrochemical degradation of paper mill wastewater at pH 4. A 96% COD removal efficiency was obtained in 40 min of electrochemical treatment of the wastewater at current density 30 mA cm −2 . A possible mechanism for degradation of the mill wastewater constituents was also proposed.

The electrochemical oxidation of pulp and paper making wastewater assisted by transition metal (Co, Cu) modified kaolin in a 200 ml electrolytic batch reactor with graphite plate as electrodes was investigated. H(2)O(2), which produced on the surface of porous graphite cathode, would react with the catalysts to form strong oxidant (hydroxyl radicals) that can in turn destroy the pollutants adsorbed on the surface of kaolin. The transition metal (Co, Cu) modified kaolin was also characterized by XRD and SEM before and after the modification and the results showed that the transition metals were completely supported on kaolin and formed a porous structure with big BET surface. The mechanism was proposed on the basis of XPS analysis of the catalyst after the degradation process. Series of experiments were also done to prove the synergetic effect of the combined oxidation system and to find out the optimal operating parameters such as initial pH, current density and amount of catalyst. From the results it can be founded that when the initial pH was at 3, current density was 30 mA cm(-2); catalyst dose was 30 g dm(-3), COD (chemical oxygen demand) removal could reach up to 96.8% in 73 min.

The electrochemical oxidation of phenol in synthetic wastewater and paper mill wastewater catalyzed by metal ion supported on cation exchange resin in suspended bed electrolytic reactor with graphite electrode has been investigated. The catalyst was characterized by SEM and XPS spectra and the effects of pH, the different metal ion and NaCl on the efficiency of the electrochemical oxidation phenol process were also studied. It was found that the catalyst containing Fe3+ had the highest electrochemical catalytic activity for the electrochemical oxidation of phenol. When the initial concentration of phenol was 200 ppm, up to 90% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was obtained in 10 min. When the catalyst containing Fe3+ was used to the paper mill wastewater, it still showed high efficiency. The COD removal could get to 75% in 60 min.

Cellulose and paper pulp factories utilize a large amount of water generating several undesirable contaminants. The present work is a preliminary investigation that associates the electrocoagulation–flotation (EC) method followed by photocatalysis to treat such wastewater. For EC, the experiment with aluminium and iron electrodes showed similar efficiency. Iron electrodes (anode and cathode) were chosen. By applying 30 min of EC/Fe 0 , 153 A m −2 and pH 6.0, the COD values, UV–vis absorbance and turbidity underwent an intense decrease. For the subsequent UV photocatalysis (mercury lamps) TiO 2 was employed and the favourable operational conditions found were 0.25 g L −1 of the catalyst and solution pH 3.0. The addition of hydrogen peroxide (50 mmol L −1 ) highly increased the photo-process performance. By employing the UV/TiO 2 /H 2 O 2 system, the COD reduction was 88% compared to pre-treated effluents and complete sample photobleaching was verified. The salt concentration on EC (iron electrodes) showed that the electrolysis duration can be reduced from 30 to 10 min by the addition of 5.0 g L −1 of NaCl. The biodegradability index (BOD/COD) increased from 0.15 (pre-treated) to 0.48 (after EC) and to 0.89 (after EC/photocatalysis irradiated for 6 h), showing that the employed sequence is very helpful to improve the water quality. This result was confirmed by biotoxicity tests performed with microcrustaceous Artemia salina .

The photocatalytic degradation of lignin obtained from wheat straw kraft digestion has been investigated by using TiO 2 and ZnO semiconductors. ZnO has been found to be a better photocatalyst than TiO 2 . The different variables studied, include catalyst dose, solution pH, oxidant concentration and initial concentration of the substrate. The degradation of lignin was favorable at pH 11. Optimum values of catalyst dose and oxidant concentration were found to be 1 g/l and 12.2 × 10 −6 M, respectively. The degradation of the organic compound was also evaluated as COD removal and increase in the COD removal was observed with increase in degradation rate. An attempt has also been made to explore the applicability of ZnO in immobilized mode for the degradation of lignin under solar light for industrial scale application. Further the comparative evaluation of ZnO in slurry/immobilized mode has been carried out.

Characteristics and catalytic properties of a series of carbon-based catalysts (CBCs) produced from paper mill sludge were evaluated. The major processes involved in the production of the catalysts were chemical activation, impregnation, pyrolysis, and post pyrolysis rinsing. The porous structure, catalytic activity and thermostability of the catalysts were tailored during the production stage by introducing hetero-atoms (zinc chloride, and ferric nitrate) in the carbon structure. Characterization of the produced CBCs included determination of the surface area, pore size, and pore size distribution (PSD) from standard N2-adsorption isotherm data. The extent of graphitization and the presence of metal crystals were identified from X-ray diffraction (XRD). The limit of the catalyst gasification was estimated from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) conducted in an oxidized environment. The NOx reduction capability of the produced catalysts was evaluated in the presence of carbon monoxide using a fixed bed reactor. The reaction temperature ranged from 300 to 500 degrees C. It was shown that paper mill sludge is an excellent precursor for the production of CBCs with NOx removal capability of 66-94%. The catalytic capability of the produced CBCs varied according to the method of production, catalyst surface properties (surface area, pore structure, PSD), metal composition and reaction temperature. The highest NOx removal capacity was observed for the catalytic reactions carried out at 400 degrees C. The mesoporous catalyst produced with a Zn:Fe molar ratio of 1:0.5 exhibited the maximum NOx removal catalytic activity of 94%.
