Abstract: Silica-supported TiO2 powders were synthesized by a wet method under mild conditions. The aim of the work was the preparation of TiO2/SiO2 additives for photocatalytic cements. Three types of commercial SiO2 were used as supports: Cabot, Axim and Fly Ash. Cabot silica was ultra-pure whereas the other two silica contained different percentages of various oxides. The TiO2/SiO2 samples, denoted TiO2/Cabot, TiO2/Axim and TiO2/Fly Ash, were prepared by boiling suspensions obtained by addition of silica to a solution of TiCl4 in water (volume ratio 1:10). The photocatalytic activity was evaluated in a gas–solid system both in batch and in continuous reactors using 2-propanol as probe molecule. SEM-EDX analysis revealed that titanium dioxide was quantitatively deposited on silica. TiO2/Axim and TiO2/Fly Ash were scarcely active whereas a good photoactivity was exhibited by the TiO2/Cabot sample both in the batch and in the continuous system. Consequently only the last sample was tested for both NO x abatement and for 4-nitrophenol photodegradation in a liquid–solid system. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Heterogeneous photocatalysis is an advanced oxidation process which has been the subject of a huge amount of studies related to air cleaning and water purification. All these processes have been carried out mainly by using TiO(2)-based materials as the photocatalysts and ca. 75% of the articles published in the last 3 years is related to them. This review illustrates the efforts in the search of alternative photocatalysts that are not based on TiO(2), with some exceptions concerning particularly innovative modifications as nanoassembled TiO(2) or TiO(2) composites with active carbon, graphite and fullerene. Papers reporting preparation, characterization and testing of binary, ternary and quaternary compounds, have been reviewed. Despite many of these photocatalysts being effective for the photodecomposition of many pollutants, most of them do not allow a complete mineralization of the starting compounds, differently from TiO(2)., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier B.V. The aim of this work was to study the biological effects of four monoterpenes, i.e. α-pinene, β-pinene, 3-carene and D-limonene present in the wastewater of a citrus transformation factory. The study was carried out by exposing V79 Chinese hamster cells to single terpene or to the mixture of four terpenes at concentrations corresponding to those in the wastewater evaluated by head space solid phase micro extraction and gas chromatography (HS-SPME-GC) analyses. Treatments with single or combined terpenes similarly affected cell vitality, but only the combined treatments induced the 6-thioguanine resistant mutants. Moreover the photocatalytic degradation of the four terpenes was successfully achieved with the photocatalyst TiO(2) Degussa P25 in both the actual effluent and in synthetic solutions., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier B.V. Photocatalytic degradation of 4-nitrophenol was investigated using Fe-doped (1, 3, 5 and 8 wt.% Fe) TiO(2) catalysts under UV light irradiation in aqueous dispersions in the presence of H(2)O(2). Photocatalysts with the lowest Fe content (1%) showed a considerably better behavior with respect to the unloaded TiO(2) and the catalysts with higher Fe contents. Photocatalytic degradation was studied under different conditions such as amounts of 1% Fe-TiO(2) catalyst, H(2)O(2) dose and initial pH of 4-NP solution. The results indicated that about 67.53% total organic carbon of a solution containing 20 mg L(-1) 4-NP was removed at pH 6.17 by using 4.9 mM of H(2)O(2) and 0.4 g L(-1) of the catalyst in a 2-L batch photo-reactor, the complete degradation of 4-NP occurring after 60 min. It was also observed that catalytic behavior could be reproduced in consecutive experiments without a considerable decrease of the UV/Fe-TiO(2)/H(2)O(2) process efficiency., (2009 Elsevier B.V. The colour changes of 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol and naphthol green beta as new screening metallochromic indicator in back-titration of EDTA excess with Zn(II) to determine Cr(III)/EDTA complex was investigated with the help of tristimulus colorimetry. Specific colour discrimination (SCD) and L*, a*, b* 1976 parameters were successfully applied to evaluate the quality of colour transition at the end-point in non-alkaline media and in the presence of Zn(II) and Ca(II) which resulted in non-interfering species at 1x10(-3) M and 2x10(-3) M, respectively. The above concentrations are comparable with those used for Cr(III). Validation of the fast and accurate reported method was performed by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Moreover, the method was applied for determining Cr as Cr(III) in a wastewater effluent deriving from a leather industry.
