A number of sophisticated communication services are available to the public for improved communication efficiency. Carrier transport services, for instance, enable the speedy transmission of varying volumes and types of information from one point to another. Customers can arrange to have this communication service permanently, when service between two points is often needed, or on-demand, when the service is required only occasionally. Switched service is a special kind of on-demand service which allows customers to choose when and where the service is needed. Among the switched services available to customers are Switched 56, Integrated Services Digital Networks (ISDN), Broadband ISDN, Frame Ready, Switched Multi-megabit Digital Service or SMDS, and T1, Fractional T1, or T3 Leased Line. These services are described briefly.
