Abstract

Transformation plays a significant role in solving hydrological problems. In response to the comment on Singh and Das (2015) by Deng et al. (2015) regarding the transformation, boundary conditions and subsequent analytical solution of advection dispersion equation in semi-infinite heterogeneous porous media, it is argued that the transformation used by Singh and Das (2015) for finding the analytical solution is correct and mathematically valid. Also, the different expression of f ( mt ) used to obtain the solution are explained with their physical relevance in the field.

Abstract

It is shown that the comment of Kavvas and Karakas (J. Hydrol., 179: 321–351, 1996) concerning the inapplicability of Eqs. (A10) and (6) in Kabala and Sposito (Water Resour. Res., 27: 341–350, 1991) to transport by nonstationary flow is correct, and that Eqs. (A10), (6) and (7) of Kabala and Sposito (1991) are incorrect for the transport case treated in that paper. The correct expressions for Eqs. (A10) and (6) in Kabala and Sposito (1991) are provided. It is also shown that the claims of Kabala and Sposito (1998) concerning the theoretical developments in Kavvas and Karakas (1996) have no basis.

18. Filter-paper method for routine measurement of field water potential

Abstract

A more general use of the filter-paper method for measuring soil-water potential over a very wide range of values is advocated, both for in situ and laboratory situations. Using Whatman® No. 42, both HgCl2-treated and untreated, filter papers, the calibration curves measured on two different batches two years apart were almost identical and were in good agreement with a curve published previously by other authors. Routine use of the same papers could therefore be made without recalibrating. Examples using the method for constructing water-release curves are given, and other uses are suggested.

HEAVY QUALITY BLOTTING PAPER IS USED TO DEMONSTRATE WATER FLOW IN A CROSS-SECTIONAL MODEL. SIMULATION IS DESCRIBED WITH BLOTTING PAPER OF INFILTRATION, SATURATED FLOW AND BLEACHING. BLOTTING PAPER APPEARS TO OFFER A CONVENIENT WAY OF DEMONSTRATING VARIOUS GROUND WATER PHENOMENA.
