In this paper, we examined the spatial and temporal variations in precipitation amount, frequency, and intensity in China based on daily precipitation data from 2050 weather stations from 1973 to 2016. We used two Markov chain parameters to quantify the wet persistence and dry persistence that characterizes the temporal pattern of wet and dry days, respectively. We found that China's annual precipitation changed little from 1973 to 2016, but varied dramatically from 524 to 688mm yr-1, with an average of 592 mm yr-1, during this period. China's precipitation frequency, the number of days with effective precipitation (.0.1mmday21) in a year, significantly decreased at a rate of 0.9 days decade21 from 1973 to 2016, but precipitation intensity significantly increased at a rate of 0.12 mm day-1 decade-1 during the same period. Of the changes in China's total precipitation amount, precipitation intensity played a dominant role, contributing 70.8%, while precipitation frequency contributed the remaining 29.2%. Little change was found in the wet persistence in China over the period of 1973-2016, but the dry persistence significantly increased with an average increasing trend of 1.62 3 1023 probability per decade during the same period, and no significant correlations were found between these two variables. China's precipitation also changed nonuniformly in space, with increasing trends in precipitation amount, frequency, intensity, and wet persistence in western and northeastern China but decreasing trends in the Sichuan basin, northeast of Inner Mongolia, and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. In karst terrains, fractures and conduits often occur in clusters, forming groundwater quick flow belts, which are the major passages of groundwater and solute transport. We propose a cost-effective method that utilizes precipitation and spring discharge data to identify groundwater quick flow belts by the multitaper method (MTM). In this paper, hydrological processes were regarded as the transformation of precipitation signals to spring discharge signals in a karst spring catchment. During the processes, karst aquifers played the role of signal filters. Only those signals with high energy could penetrate through aquifers and reflect in the spring discharge, while other weak signals were filtered out or altered by aquifers. Hence, MTM was applied to detect and reconstruct the signals that penetrate through aquifers. Subsequently, by analyzing the reconstructed signals of precipitation with those of spring discharge, we acquired the hydraulic response time and identified the quick flow belts. Finally, the methods were applied to the Niangziguan Spring (NS) catchment, China. Results showed that the hydraulic response time of the spring discharge to precipitation was 3 months at Pingding County; 4 months at Yuxian County, Yangquan City, Xiyang County, and Heshun County; and 27 months at Shouyang County and Zouquan County. These results suggested that Pingding County is located at a groundwater quick flow belt, which is a major passage of groundwater and contaminants, in the NS catchment. This is important since Pingding County is not only the key development area of karst groundwater but also the key conservation area for sustainable development of karst groundwater resources in NS catchment. Numerous circulation indices have been applied in practical climate services focused on regional precipitation. It is beneficial to identify the most influential or decisive indices, but this is difficult with conventional correlation analyses because of the underlying nonlinear mechanisms for precipitation. This paper demonstrates a set of the most influential indices for July–August precipitation in North China, based on the recursive random forest (RRF) method. These decisive circulation indices include the Polar–Eurasia teleconnection, North African subtropical high ridge position, India–Burma trough, Antarctic Oscillation, Northern Hemisphere polar vortex central latitude, North Atlantic Oscillation, and western Pacific subtropical high northern boundary position. Some of these factors have been recognized as directly influential to the regional precipitation, for example, those of the northwestern Pacific subtropical high; however, some are not easily understood. Decision tree (DT) models using these indices were developed to facilitate composite analyses to explain the RRF results. Taking one of the most interesting DT rules as an example, when the North African subtropical high ridge position is sufficiently far south, an anomalous anticyclone occurs in the upstream and an anomalous cyclone in the downstream of North China. This is unfavorable for northward moisture transport in eastern China and hence causes less precipitation in North China than climatology. The present results are not only helpful for improving diagnostic models of regional precipitation, but also enlightening for exploring how global climate change could impact a region by modulating large-scale circulation patterns. Middle and eastern routes of the South-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP) of China, which are approximately located within the area 28°-42°N and 110°-122°E, are being constructed. This paper investigates the past climatic variations on various time scales using instrumental and proxy data. It is found that annual mean surface air temperature has increased significantly during the past 50-100 years, and winter and spring temperatures in the northern part of the region have undergone the most significant changes. A much more significant increase occurs for annual mean minimum temperature and extreme low temperature than for annual mean maximum temperature and extreme high temperature. No significant trend in annual precipitation is found for the region as a whole for the last 50 and 100 years, although obvious decadal and spatial variation is detectable. A seesaw pattern of annual and summer precipitation variability between the north and the south of the region is evident. Over the last 100 years, the Haihe River basin has witnessed a significant negative trend of annual precipitation, but no similar trend is detected for the Yangtze and Huaihe River basins. Pan evaporation has significantly decreased since the mid-1960s in the region in spite of the fact that the trend appears to have ended in the early 1990s. The negative trend of pan evaporation is very significant in the plain area between the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers. There was a notable series of dry intervals lasting decades in the north of the region. The northern drought of the past 30 years is not the most severe in view of the past 500 years; however, the southern drought during the period from the 1960s to the 1980s may have been unprecedented. The dryness-wetness index (DWI) shows significant oscillations with periodicities of 9.5 and 20 years in the south and 10.5 and 25 years in the north. Longer periodicities in the DWI series include 160-170- and 70-80-yr oscillations in the north, and 100-150-yr oscillations in the south. The observed climate change could have implications for the construction and management of the SNWDP. The official approval and start of the hydro project was catalyzed by the severe multiyear drought of 1997-2003 in the north, and the operation and management of the project in the future will also be influenced by climate change-in particular by precipitation variability. Because of the limitations of coarse-resolution general circulation models (GCMs), delta change (DC) methods are generally used to derive scenarios of future climate as inputs into impact models. In this paper, the impact of future climate change on irrigation was investigated over China using the Community Land Model, version 4 (CLM4), which was calibrated against observed irrigation water demand (IWD) at the provincial level. The results show large differences in projected changes of IWD variability, extremes, timing, and regional responses between the DC and bias-corrected (BC) methods. For example, 95th-percentile IWD increased by 62% in the BC method compared to only a 28% increase in the DC method. In addition, a shift of seasonal IWD peaks (averaged over the country) to one month later in the year was projected when using the BC method, whereas no evident changes were predicted when using the DC method. Furthermore, low-percentile runoff has larger impacts in the BC method compared with proportional changes in the DC method, indicating that hydrological droughts seem to be exacerbated by increased climate variability. The discrepancies between the two methods were potentially due to the inability of the DC method to capture the changes in precipitation variability. Therefore, the authors highlight the potential effects of climate variability and the sensitivity to the choice of particular strategy-adjusting climate projection in assessing climate change impacts on irrigation. According to the mean seasonal and annual precipitation from 30 meteorological stations in the periods of 1961-2008, the precipitation trends are analyzed by using the Mann-Kendall (MK) test in the Jinsha River basin (JRB). Both the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of precipitation trends in different regions in the JRB are studied for the first time in this paper. There is a slight and insignificant increasing trend in seasonal and annual precipitation except for autumn precipitation, and the annual precipitation has increased by 0.7634 mm yr−1 during the last 48 years. The increasing precipitation trends in spring seem more significant than those in the other three seasons, and autumn is the only season showing a slight and insignificant decreasing precipitation trend. There are more than 80% of stations exhibiting increasing trends for annual precipitation, and it goes to 90% for spring precipitation. The increasing precipitation trends in the headwater and the middle reaches are more dominant than those in the upper and lower reaches. The largest increase magnitude occurred in the less precipitation area, while the largest decrease magnitude occurred in the more precipitation area. The increasing trend of minimum precipitation series and decreasing trend of maximum precipitation series could result in a decreasing trend for the range series in the JRB. In general, the increasing trends of precipitation in the tributary (the Yalong River) are more significant than those in the mainstream (the Jinsha River). In this paper, the capability of the European Remote Sensing Satellite (ERS) scatterometer-derived soil water index (SWI) data to disclose water availability and precipitation distribution in China is investigated. Monthly averaged SWI data for the years 1992–2000 are analyzed to evaluate the use of the SWI as an index to monitor water availability and water stress at three different scales in China and to investigate if it reflects general precipitation distribution characteristics in China. Monthly averaged in situ relative soil moisture from Chinese meteorological gauge stations, as well as monthly precipitation data from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC), are employed to perform comparisons with SWI on local, regional, and countrywide scales. First, since soil moisture is highly affected by the precipitation, area-averaged SWI is compared with in situ relative soil moisture and GPCC precipitation data in one local area. Second, area-averaged SWI and GPCC precipitation data are used to perform comparisons in three regions of China. Finally, the relationship between SWI and GPCC precipitation data in China is investigated on a countrywide scale. Such multiscale analyses with SWI data have not been performed before, and SWI has never been investigated in detail for China. ERS-derived SWI data in China for the years 1992–2000 are evaluated to be a good indicator for water availability on local, regional, and countrywide scales. SWI and SWI anomaly data correlate well with precipitation and in situ soil moisture data. SWI has furthermore been demonstrated to reflect extreme events such as droughts and floods in China, occurring during the investigated period between 1992 and 2000. Additionally, the SWI allows one to monitor increasing soil moisture resulting from snowmelt, which cannot be deduced from precipitation data. The freely available 15-yr (1992–2007) time series SWI data are thus a valuable tool to overcome the scarcity of in situ soil moisture observations, which are usually not available on regional and countrywide scales. This paper attempts to provide some new understanding of the mechanical as well as thermal effects of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) on the circulation and climate in Asia through diagnosis and numerical experiments. The air column over the TP descends in winter and ascends in summer and regulates the surface Asian monsoon flow. Sensible heating on the sloping lateral surfaces appears from the authors’ experiments to be the major driving source. The retarding and deflecting effects of the TP in winter generate an asymmetric dipole zonal-deviation circulation, with a large anticyclone gyre to the north and a cyclonic gyre to the south. Such a dipole deviation circulation enhances the cold outbreaks from the north over East Asia, results in a dry climate in south Asia and a moist climate over the Indochina peninsula and south China, and forms the persistent rainfall in early spring (PRES) in south China. In summer the TP heating generates a cyclonic spiral zonal-deviation circulation in the lower troposphere, which converges toward and rises over the TP. It is shown that because the TP is located east of the Eurasian continent, in summertime the meridional winds and vertical motions forced by the Eurasian continental-scale heating and the TP local heating are in phase over the eastern and central parts of the continent. This paper presents the results of bias corrections of Chinese standard precipitation gauge (CSPG) measurements for wind-induced undercatch, a trace amount of precipitation, and wetting loss. Long-term daily data of precipitation, temperature, and wind speed during 1951–98 at 710 meteorological stations in China were used for this analysis. It is found that wind-induced gauge undercatch is the greatest error in most regions, and wetting loss and a trace amount of precipitation are important in the low-precipitation regions in northwest China. Monthly correction factors ratio of corrected amount to measured amount of precipitation differ by location and by type of precipitation. Considerable interannual variation of the corrections exists in China due to the fluctuations of wind speed and frequency of precipitation. More importantly, annual precipitation has been increased by 8 to 740 mm with an overall mean of 130 mm at the 710 stations over China because of the bias corrections for the study period. This corresponds to 6%–62% increases (overall mean of 19% at the 710 stations over China) in gauge-measured yearly total precipitation over China. This important finding clearly suggests that annual precipitation in China is much higher than previously reported. Recent events across many regions around the world have shown that short-term droughts (i.e., daily or weekly) with sudden occurrence can lead to huge losses to a wide array of environmental and societal sectors. However, the most commonly used drought indices can only identify drought at the monthly scale. Here, we introduced a daily scale drought index, that is, the standardized antecedent precipitation evapotranspiration index (SAPEI) that utilizes precipitation and potential evapotranspiration and also considers the effect of early water balance on dry/wet conditions on the current day. The robustness of SAPEI is first assessed through comparison with two typical monthly indices [Palmer drought severity index (PDSI) and standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI)] and soil moisture, and then applied to tracking short-term droughts during 1961–2015 for the Pearl River basin in south China. It is demonstrated that SAPEI performs as well as SPEI/self-calibrating PDSI at the monthly scale but outperforms SPEI at the weekly scale. Moreover, SAPEI is capable of revealing daily drought conditions, fairly consistent with soil moisture changes. Results also show that many of the historical short-term droughts over the Pearl River basin have multiple peaks in terms of severity, affected area, and intensity. The daily scale SAPEI provides an effective way of exploring drought initiation, development, and decay, which could be conducive for decision-makers and stakeholders to make early and timely warnings. Stationarity is an assumption that permeates training and practice in water-resource engineering. However, with global change, the validity of stationarity as well as uncertainty of nonstationarity in water-resource planning are being questioned; thus, it is critical to evaluate the stationarity of climate variables, especially precipitation. Based on the continuous observation data of precipitation from 1427 stations across China, 593 efficient grid cells (1° × 1°) are constructed, and the annual precipitation stationarities from 1959 to 2018 are analyzed. The evaluated autocorrelation stationarity indicates that 92.24%–96.12% of the grid cells for an autocorrelation coefficient of lag 1–8 years of precipitation are indistinguishable from 0 [90% confidence level (CL)]. The mean stationarity indicates that 97.47% of the grid cells have a stable mean for 30 years (90% CL); beyond the confidence limits, they are mainly located in the northwest of China, where annual precipitation is less, and the average exceeding range is ±3.78 mm. The long-term observation of annual precipitation in Beijing (1819–2018) and Shanghai (1879–2018) also yields autocorrelation and mean stationarities. There is no significant difference in the annual precipitations between the past 20 years (1999–2018) and the past 60 years (1959–2018) over China. Therefore, the annual precipitation in China exhibits a weak stationary behavior that is indistinguishable from the stationary stochastic process. The average variation in precipitation is ±9.55% between 30 successive years and 16.53% between 10 successive years. Seasonal variations in precipitation (P) and potential evapotranspiration (ET0) are critical for regional hydrometeorological studies and water resource management. The sinusoidal function is widely used to describe the seasonal pattern of P and ET0. However, high errors occur either in the arid places or in places with hyperseasonal precipitation. These limitations are intrinsic properties of the sinusoidal climate descriptor and remain a barrier to provide insight into regional water-energy partitions and hydrologic similarity and predictability. In this study, we used a Gaussian framework as an alternative to describe seasonal variations in P and ET0 regimes in the Yellow River basin (YRB). The results show that the Gaussian framework provides a good approximation to the seasonal pattern of P and has a strong regional applicability for reproducing the monthly PandET0. This allows us to assess the climate seasonality characterizing the regional balance between water supply and energy availability using δP, δET0, and aridity index. The climate seasonality indicates that the balance between water supply and energy availability has a switch in about 32% of the grid cells during the seasonal cycle from1982 to 2015. These grid cells are mostly located in regions with average annual precipitation above 550 mm. In the northwest region of the YRB, which has a dry climate, the amount of potential evapotranspiration always exceeds the precipitation. We argue that the Gaussian function provides a quantitative conceptual framework for accurate assessment of regional water supply and energy availability and offers a penetrating insight into hydrometeorology. In this study, a microwave-based multisatellite merged product released from the European Space Agency's Climate Change Initiative (ESA CCI) and two model-based simulations from the Community Land Model 4.5 (CLM4.5) and Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) were used to investigate interannual variations and trends of soil moisture in China between 1979 and 2010. They were also evaluated using in situ observations from the nationwide agrometeorological network. These three datasets show consistent drying trends for surface soil moisture in northeastern and central China, as well the eastern portion of Inner Mongolia, and wetting trends in the Tibetan Plateau, which are also identified by in situ observations. Trends in the root-zone soil moisture are in line with those of surface soil moisture seen in the CLM4.5 and GLDAS simulations obtained from most areas in China (78%-88%), except for northwestern China and southwest of the Tibetan Plateau. Moreover, the drying trend intensifies with increasing soil depth. Taking the in situ measurements as reference, it is found that ESA CCI has better accuracy in identifying the significant drying trends while CLM4.5 and GLDAS capture wetting trends better. Compared to temperature, precipitation is the primary factor responsible for these trends, which controls the direction of soil moisture changes, while increasing temperatures can also enhance soil drying during periods of decreased precipitation. The potential predictability of seasonal extreme precipitation accumulation (SEPA) across mainland China is evaluated, based on daily precipitation observations during 1960-2013 at 675 stations. The potential predictability value (PPV) of SEPA is calculated for each station by decomposing the observed SEPA variance into a part associated with stochastic daily rainfall variability and another part associated with longer-time-scale climate processes. A Markov chain model is constructed for each station and a Monte Carlo simulation is applied to estimate the stochastic part of the variance. The results suggest that there are more potentially predictable regions for summer than for the other seasons, especially over southern China, the Yangtze River valley, the north China plain, and northwestern China. There are also regions of large PPVs in southern China for autumn and winter and in northwestern China for spring. The SEPA series for the regions of large PPVs are deemed not entirely stochastic, either with long-term trends (e.g., increasing trends in inland northwestern China) or significant correlation with well-known large-scale climate processes (e.g., East Asian winter monsoon for southern China in winter and El Niño for the Yangtze River valley in summer). This fact not only verifies the claim that the regions have potential predictability but also facilitates predictive studies of the regional extreme precipitation associated with large-scale climate processes. This study analyzes the variation and risk changes of extreme precipitation under nonstationarity conditions using the Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale, and Shape (GAMLSS) and the Mann-Kendall (MK) test. The extreme precipitation series is extracted from the observations during the second flood season (July-September) from 1960 to 2012 derived from 86 meteorological stations in the southeastern coastal region of China. The trend of mean (Mn) and variance (Var) of extreme precipitation is detected by MK. Ten large-scale circulation variables and four greenhouse gases are selected to construct a climate change index and a human activity index, which are based on principal component analysis. The recurrence risk of extreme precipitation is calculated by GAMLSS while considering climate changes and human activities. The results demonstrate that the nonstationarity characteristic of extreme precipitation is widespread in this region. A significant increasing trend of Mn is found in Shanghai, eastern Zhejiang, and northern and southern Fujian. An enhanced Var is found in eastern Guangdong. A significant positive correlation exists between climate changes/human activities and Mn/Var, especially in Zhejiang and Fujian. Generally, the contribution of climate changes and human activities to Mn is greater than it is to Var. In this region, the precipitation amount of high-frequency (2-yr return period) and low-frequency (100-yr return period) events increases from inland to coastal and from north to south. The Diaoyu Islands are a group of uninhabited islets located in the East China Sea between Japan, China, and Taiwan. Here, four mainstream gauge-adjusted multisatellite precipitation estimates [TRMM Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis, version 7 (TMPA-V7); CPC morphing technique-bias-corrected product (CMORPH-CRT); Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information Using Artificial Neural Networks-Climate Data Record (PERSIANN-CDR); and Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation-gauge adjusted (GSMaP_Gauge)] are adopted to detect the rainfall characteristics of the Diaoyu Islands area with a particular focus on typhoon contribution. Out of the four products, CMORPH-CRT and GSMaP_Gauge show much more similarity both in terms of the spatial patterns and error structures because of their use of the same morphing technique. Overall, GSMaP_Gauge performs better than the other three products, likely because of denser in situ observations integrated in its retrieval algorithms over East Asia. All rainfall products indicate that an apparent rain belt exists along the northeastern 45° direction of Taiwan extending to Kyushu of Japan, which is physically associated with the Kuroshio. The Diaoyu Islands are located on the central axis of this rain belt. During the period 2001-09, typhoon-induced rainfall accounted for 530 mm yr−1, and typhoons contributed on average approximately 30% of the annual precipitation budget over the Diaoyu Islands. Higher typhoon contribution was found over the southern warmer water of the Diaoyu Islands, while the northern cooler water presented less contribution ratio. Supertyphoon Chaba, the largest typhoon of 2004, recorded 53 h of rainfall accumulation totaling 235 mm on the Diaoyu Islands, and this event caused severe property damage and human casualties for Japan. Soil moisture shortages adversely affecting agriculture are significantly associated with meteorological drought. Because of limited soil moisture observations with which to monitor agricultural drought, characterizing soil moisture using drought indices is of great significance. The relationship between commonly used drought indices and soil moisture is examined here using Chinese surface weather data and calculated station-based drought indices. Outside of northeastern China, surface soil moisture is more affected by drought indices having shorter time scales while deep-layer soil moisture is more related on longer index time scales. Multiscalar drought indices work better than drought indices from two-layer bucket models. The standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) works similarly or better than the standardized precipitation index (SPI) in characterizing soil moisture at different soil layers. In most stations in China, the Z index has a higher correlation with soil moisture at 0-5 cm than the Palmer drought severity index (PDSI), which in turn has a higher correlation with soil moisture at 90-100-cm depth than the Z index. Soil bulk density and soil organic carbon density are the two main soil properties affecting the spatial variations of the soil moisture-drought indices relationship. Seasonal predictions of precipitation and surface air temperature from the Climate Forecast System, version 2 (CFSv2), are evaluated against gridded daily observations from 1982 to 2007 over 17 hydroclimatic regions in China. The seasonal predictive skill is quantified with skill scores including correlation coefficient, RMSE, and mean bias for spatially averaged seasonal precipitation and temperature forecasts for each region. The evaluation focuses on identifying regions and seasons where significant skill exists, thus potentially contributing to skill in hydrological prediction. The authors find that the predictive skill of CFSv2 precipitation and temperature forecasts has a stronger dependence on seasons and regions than on lead times. Both temperature and precipitation forecasts show higher skill from late summer [July-September (JAS)] to late autumn [October-December (OND)] and from winter [December-February (DJF)] to spring [March-May (MAM)]. The skill of CFSv2 precipitation forecasts is low during summer [June-August (JJA)] and winter (DJF) over all of China because of low potential predictability of the East Asian summer monsoon and the East Asian winter monsoon for China. As expected, temperature predictive skill is much higher than precipitation predictive skill in all regions. As observed precipitation shows significant correlation with the Oceanic Niño index over western, southwestern, and central China, the authors found that CFSv2 precipitation forecasts generally show similar correlation pattern, suggesting that CFSv2 precipitation forecasts can capture ENSO signals. Development of an accurate precipitation dataset is of primary importance for regional hydrological process studies and water resources management. Here, four regional precipitation products are evaluated for the Heihe River basin (HRB): 1) a spatially and temporally disaggregated Climate Prediction Center Merged Analysis of Precipitation (CMAP) at 0.25° spatial resolution (DCMAP); 2) a fusion product obtained by merging China Meteorological Administration station data and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission precipitation data at 0.1° spatial resolution supported by the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research (ITP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (ITP-F); 3) a disaggregated CMAP downscaled by a statistical meteorological model tool at 1-km spatial resolution (DCMAP-MicroMet); and 4) a Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model simulation with 5-km resolution (WRF-P). The validation metrics include spatial pattern, temporal pattern, error analysis with respect to observation data, and precipitation event verification indicators. The results indicate that 1) precipitation from the DCMAP product may not be suitable for water cycle studies at the watershed scale because of its coarser spatial resolution and 2) ITP-F, WRF-P, and DCMAP-MicroMet precipitation products generally show similar spatial-temporal patterns in HRB but have varying performances between different subbasins. Several provinces of China experienced an intense drought episode during 2009 and 2010. The drought was particularly severe in southwestern and northern China, where the accumulated precipitation from May 2009 to April 2010 was about 25% less than normal. The decline of accumulated precipitation over northern China was mostly noticeable during the summer season of 2009 and it was comparable to recent dry episodes. The southwestern China drought resulted from a sequence of dry months from summer 2009 to winter 2010, corresponding to the driest event since at least 1951. The suppression of rainfall in summer over both regions was in agreement with a weakened broad-scale South Asian summer monsoon, possibly influenced by an El Niño developing phase, whereas the extremely negative phases of the Arctic Oscillation during the winter of 2010 may have contributed to the persistence of the drought in southwestern China. The assessment of the associated impacts indicates that water reservoirs were severely affected with a ~20% reduction in the nationwide hydroelectrical production during the drought event. Furthermore, an analysis of the normalized difference vegetation index data reveals that large cropland sectors of northern and eastern China experienced up to 8 months of persistently stressed vegetation between May 2009 and July 2010, while southwestern China was relatively less affected. Such different regional vegetative responses are interpreted in terms of the land-cover type, agriculture management, and their dependence on seasonal precipitation and water availability for irrigation. Multimodel ensemble forecasting has been shown to offer a systematic improvement in the skill of climate prediction with atmosphere and ocean circulation models. However, little such work has been done for the land surface component, an important lower boundary for weather and climate forecast models. In this study, the authors examine and evaluate several methods of combining individual global soil wetness products from uncoupled land surface model calculations and coupled land–atmosphere model reanalyses to produce an ensemble analysis. Analyses are verified against observations from the Global Soil Moisture Data Bank (GSMDB) with skill measured by correlation coefficient and root-mean-square error (RMSE). A preliminary transferability study is conducted as well for investigating the feasibility of transferring ensemble regression parameters within two specific regions (Illinois and east-central China) and between these two regions of similar climate and land use. The results show that when sufficient validation data are available, one can use a seasonally dependent linear regression to improve the skill of any individual model simulation of soil wetness. Further improvements in skill can be achieved with more sophisticated ensembling methods, such as the regression-adjusted multimodel ensemble mean analysis and regression-adjusted multimodel analysis. However, all the ensembling schemes involving regression usually do not help improve the skill scores as far as the simulation of anomalies of soil wetness is concerned. In the absence of calibration data, the simple arithmetic ensemble mean across multiple soil wetness products generally does as well or better than the best individual model at any location in the representation of both soil wetness and its anomaly. Transferability from one subset of stations from the Illinois or east-central China dataset to another gives satisfactory results. However, results are poor when transferring regression weights between different regions, even with similar climate regimes and land cover. Such an exercise helps us to understand better the virtues and limitations of various ensembling techniques and enables progress toward creating an optimum, model-independent analysis from a practical point of view. A series of numerical simulations by an atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) was conducted to evaluate the relative roles of Tibetan Plateau (TP) and continental-scale land surface processes on the Asian monsoon and hydroclimates in other regions in the Tropics. Four boundary conditions were used to define experiments: a flat and bare-rock (nonvegetated) surface (NMR), a realistic TP with bare-rock surface (MR), MR conditions but with a water-holding soil layer (with 20 cm of field capacity) (MS), and TP with a vegetated surface with specified albedo and roughness of the current vegetation and the soil layer (MVS). Systematic increases of precipitation (P) over the Asian monsoon region and other land areas in the Tropics were noticed from NMR, MR, MS, to MVS runs. Precipitation over the warm tropical western Pacific, in contrast, decreased from NMR to MVS runs although the same SST climatology was prescribed in all the experiments. The effect of TP orography produces wet (dry) climate regions to the west (east) of TP as shown in other GCM studies. In the Asian monsoon region both land surface effect (LSE) and TP effect (TE) contribute nearly equally to increase P, but in the West African monsoon region, TE contributes to decrease P while LSE plays a major role to increase P. LSE also enhances the subtropical anticyclone over the North Pacific through enhanced land–ocean thermal contrast. In most of the monsoon regions and Tropics, the albedo (and roughness) effect of vegetation substantially increases available radiation, which in turn increases both evaporation (E) and atmospheric moisture convergence (C), and, as a result, significantly increases P. This positive feedback between E and C is likely to be a characteristic nature when and where vegetation albedo effect is significant under sufficient radiative energy, suggesting a prerequisite for Charney’s original hypothesis.
