Background: As current ethical codes preclude determining whether the clinical improvements obtained with the use of three-dimensional (3D)-printed scaffolds represent true periodontal regeneration, the histological proof of evidence for regeneration must be demonstrated in animal models. Thus, this systematic review investigated the regenerative potential of 3D-printed scaffolds in animal models of periodontal defects. Materials and Methods: A systematic search was performed in four databases (Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus) to identify preclinical controlled studies that investigated the use of 3D-printed scaffolds for periodontal regeneration. Studies limited to periodontal defects treated with 3D scaffolds were eligible for inclusion. The primary outcome was periodontal regeneration, assessed histologically as new bone, cementum, and periodontal ligament (PDL). This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Quality was assessed according to the SRYCLE score. Results: Six studies met the inclusion criteria. Scaffolds were designed using computer-aided design software. While the absence of a scaffold resulted in defects repaired mainly with fibrous connective tissue, the use of nonguiding 3D scaffolds promoted some bone formation. Notably, the regeneration of cementum and functional PDL fibers perpendicularly inserted into the root surface and the alveolar bone was limited to the defects treated with multi-compartment fiber-guiding or ion-containing 3D scaffolds. Nevertheless, the quality of the evidence was limited due to the unclear risk of bias. Conclusions: Despite the limitations of the available evidence, the current data suggest that the use of printed multi-compartment fiber-guiding or ion-containing 3D scaffolds improves periodontal regeneration in animal models. Background: The traditional treatment procedures which aimed at treating periodontal disease did not result in true periodontal regeneration. Unpredictability about osseous defect fill after periodontal flap surgery has stemmed in the research of a variety of regenerative materials. This randomized clinical trial was conducted to compare regenerative potential of Biostite® bone graft material with and without Paroguide® a bioresorbable membrane in the treatment of periodontal osseous defects. Materials and Methods: Twenty sites from a total of from ten patients were chosen for the study. Those sites were divided into experimental site A (Biostite®) and experimental site B (Biostite® with Paroguide®) at random. Plaque index and gingival index (GI) were the clinical parameters noted at baseline, 3rd, 6th and 9th months, whereas the probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level and gingival recession were noted at baseline, 6th and 9th months. Radiographic evaluation was made by using computer-assisted densitometric analysis. Intrasurgical measurements were done at baseline and 9 months. Statistical analysis was done using paired t-test and un-paired t-test. Results: Both experimental site A and B showed a significant reduction in plaque and GI. All clinical parameters as well as radiographic image analysis showed highly significant improvement from baseline to 9 months for both sites. Inter-group comparison does not show statistically significant improvement. Conclusion: The results of this study suggested that both Biostite® bone graft and Paroguide® membrane have promised encouraging results in the management of periodontal intrabony defects, however, the groups did differed to each other statistically.

Background: Periodontal disease is ubiquitous and its treatment requires a detailed treatment plan. Biomaterials are often used along with demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft (DFDBA) for periodontal regeneration. One percent metformin has evolved as a regeneration material. This study was initiated to assess and compare the regenerative potential of DFDBA alone and with 1% metformin in the treatment of intrabony defects in subjects with chronic periodontitis. Materials and Methods: 20 sites with intrabony defects were diagnosed of which 10 were assigned to Group A (1% Metformin + DFDBA) and 10 to Group B (DFDBA alone). Clinical parameters were measured at baseline, 3, 6, and 9 months postoperatively, whereas radiographic parameters were measured at baseline and 9 months postoperatively, and data were statistically analyzed. Results: Both the groups showed a statistically significant improvement in probing pocket depth and relative attachment level at 9 months. Radiographically, a statistically significant reduction in defect depth was seen in both the groups at 9 months. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups as far as crestal bone loss is concerned. No statistically significant difference was seen for clinical and radiographic parameters between the test and control groups. Conclusions: The addition of 1% metformin to DFDBA did not have any additional benefits in the treatment of subjects with defects which are intrabony.

Tooth graft can be used as a regenerative material in the field of periodontics and implantology. The tooth graft with 70% demineralization is considered to be a better option for periodontal regeneration. Different methods are employed for demineralization of tooth using various acids. Materials and Methods: This study was designed as an in vitro study. Totally 60 teeth were collected and categorized into four groups. Groups I, II, and III teeth were demineralized in 2% nitric acid, 0.6 M hydrochloric acid, and 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), respectively. The Group IV teeth were left undemineralized. The elements present in the various tooth graft groups after demineralization were analyzed by EDX-720 XRF Instrument. Results: The EDTA demineralized tooth graft has higher level of Calcium, Strontium, and Zinc content compared to other tooth graft groups and it was statistically significant with P = 0.001. Conclusion: The EDTA demineralized tooth graft can serve as better graft than 2% nitric acid and 0.6M hydrochloric acid demineralized and undemineralized tooth grafts.

Background: This clinical study aimed to overcome the difficulty of graft fixation and limited blood supply for dehiscence defects regeneration by using a cross-linked gelfoam matrix jointly with collagen membrane and xenograft. Materials and Methods: The study included twenty dehiscence-like defects in maxillary anterior teeth with ≥4 mm facial bone loss and ≥5 mm clinical attachment loss (CAL) in patients suffering from Stage III periodontitis. Sites were treated with regenerative surgery using a cross-linked gelfoam matrix with glutaraldehyde, xenograft, and collagen membrane. The recorded parameters were: CAL, probing pocket depth (PPD), and radiographic three-dimensional (3D) volume for dehiscence-like defects (3D volume of facial bone defects) and 3D volume of interproximal defects using cone-beam radiographs. Data of these parameters were collected at both baseline and 6 months postsurgery. “Paired t-test” was used to assess the two variables.” Results: Both CAL and PPD showed statistically significant reductions and there was a significant bone gain at 6 months postsurgery in comparison to baseline (P ≤ 0.05). Conclusion: Using a cross-linked gelfoam matrix with glutaraldehyde in combination with xenograft and collagen membrane could enhance the outcome of periodontal regeneration, especially in the treatment of challenging dehiscence defects.

IMP improves the blood supply and the inherent osteogenic properties of the vital bone and has the advantages of minimal surgical invasion, time, and cost. Incorporation of IMP in the regeneration of periodontal defects is very scarce. Hence, the present study aimed to evaluate the involvement of IMP and advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) in the regenerative outcomes in the treatment of intrabony defects. Materials and Methods: In the present randomized controlled trial, 20 periodontitis patients with 20 defects were randomly allotted into two groups: group I open flap debridement (OFD) and A-PRF, group II OFD, intramarrow debridement, and A-PRF. Background: The use of biofuel like platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) may enhance the healing potential of the tissues in tobacco smokers and diabetic patients. Aim: To evaluate the modified advanced PRF (A-PRF) buffy coat quantitatively in uncontrolled type-2 diabetic patients and tobacco smokers with chronic periodontitis by determining the size outcome of the buffy coat, the platelet and leukocyte concentration, and also to find out the influence of gender on these parameters. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 180 generalized chronic periodontitis patients (46–55 years) were enrolled, Group 1 (Control group): 60 systemically healthy subjects; Group 2 (Test group): 60 Heavy tobacco smokers; and Group 3 (Test group): 60 uncontrolled type 2 diabetic patients. 15 ml of blood was drawn from all subjects to assess the size outcome, platelet, and leukocyte concentration also to find out the influence of gender on the various parameters of the prepared modified (A-PRF) membrane. Results: Uncontrolled type-2 diabetic patients had maximum height (23.39 ± 1.69 mm) and width (7.26 ± 0.16 mm) of modified (A-PRF) clot when compared to healthy individuals and tobacco smokers. The total number of platelet (245.38 ± 40.72 1000/ul) and leukocyte count (6.11 ± 0.60 1000/ul) and their percentage of concentration were 95.21 ± 2.16% and 77.25% ±1.98%, respectively, and is significantly higher in uncontrolled type-2 diabetic patients (P ≤ 0.05). Females were associated with the larger sized modified (A-PRF) clot with more number of platelets and leukocytes count than males. Conclusions: Size outcome of modified (A-PRF) clot was found to be comparatively larger in uncontrolled type-2 diabetic patients particularly in females of all the groups when compared to males. Among the hematological parameters, the total count as well as the percentage of platelet and leukocyte in modified (A-PRF) membrane was found to be higher in uncontrolled type-2 diabetic patients. Female subjects exhibited higher platelet and leukocyte concentration than males.

Background: The ultimate goal of furcation defect therapy is furcation closure via periodontal regeneration. However, the process of periodontal regeneration is affected by the regenerative environment of signaling molecules and growth factors due to which consistent findings of complete furcation closure could not be attained. In this study, we have evaluated the use of concentrated growth factor (CGF) which provides sustained release growth factors in conjunction with bovine-derived xenograft anorganic bovine bone (ABB) in guided tissue regeneration (GTR) of Degree II mandibular molar furcation defect. Materials and Methods: Twenty patients with Degree II mandibular molar furcation defects were selected for the study. Each group consisted of 10 patients and a total of 10 sites were treated in each group. The control sites were treated with GTR and ABB, while the experimental sites received CGF mixed with ABB along with GTR. Clinical parameters recorded were Plaque Index, Gingival Index, vertical probing depth, and horizontal probing depth measured at baseline and 6 months. Radiographic parameters such as the vertical height of defect, horizontal depth of defect, and percentage of vertical and horizontal bone fill were recorded at baseline and 6 months. Results: All the parameters recorded showed a significant reduction from baseline to 6 months in both the groups. Significantly higher vertical and horizontal bone fill was observed in the experimental group as compared to the control group. Conclusion: The use of CGF showed a positive additive efficacy in enhancing the events of periodontal regeneration in the treatment of Degree II mandibular molar furcation defect.

Platelet rich fibrin (PRF), an autologous platelet concentrate holds potential to be used for regenerative treatment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate clinical and radiographic outcomes in periodontal intrabony defects treated with advanced-PRF block (A PRF + i PRF + nanohydroxyapatite [nHA]) compared to nHA alone. Methods: Twenty-eight sites in chronic periodontitis patients having probing pocket depth (PPD) ≥6 mm and 3 walled intrabony defects (depth of ≥3 mm) were selected, randomly allotted into two groups: Group A was treated with A-PRF block and Group B with nHA (Sybograf™). Clinical parameters including plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), PPD, relative attachment level (RAL) and radiographically linear and volumetric defect fill were assessed using cone beam computed tomography at baseline and 6 months postoperatively. Results: Intragroup comparison using paired t-test and intergroup comparison using unpaired t-test was done. Group A demonstrated significantly higher reduction in PPD and gain in RAL when compared to Group B (P ≤ 0.05) at the end of 6 months. Similarly gain in bone volume was greater in Group A (0.1 ± 0.05) as compared to Group B (0.04 ± 0.02) (P ≤ 0.05). Conclusion: Advanced-PRF block showed significant clinical and radiographic improvement as compared to nHA alone which depicts that, it may be an ideal graft to be used for the treatment of periodontal intrabony defects.

Background: Nature and its products can be utilized for regeneration in periodontal destruction and damage to supporting tissues. We come across the use of various graft materials to reestablish the lost bone and for the long-term survival of teeth. The objective of this study was to evaluate the bone fill efficacy of Morinda citrifolia fruit extract in the periodontal bone defect. Materials and Methods: This randomized study included twenty patients indicated for periodontal regenerative therapy and were equally divided and assigned into the experimental and control group. Open flap debridement alone was performed in the control group, while placement of extract along with open flap debridement was done in the experimental group. Clinical parameters assessed were gingival index, probing pocket depth, and relative attachment level, and the amount of bone fill was assessed using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) at baseline and at 6-month interval. Results: From the values of clinical parameters, there was a mean reduction in probing pocket and gain in attachment level and a 27.7% increase in bone fill in experimental group as compared to the control group from CBCT analysis. Conclusions: The use of M. citrifolia fruit extract in the intraosseous defect was found to be efficacious in terms of relative attachment level and the amount of bone fill, and it had shown some anti-inflammatory affect.

Background: The study aims to evaluate the effect of adding extracellular matrix (ECM) component – natural collagen to nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (nHA) bone graft in the treatment of intrabony defect in chronic periodontitis patients. Materials and Methods: Forty chronic periodontitis patients having at least one intrabony defect were treated surgically by open flap debridement and the defect grafted (Group A: 20 sites grafted with nHA with natural collagen and Group B: 20 sites grafted with nHA). Plaque index, gingival index, probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), and radiographic defect depth (RDD) were evaluated. Results: The mean PPD reduced from 7.6 ± 0.88 at baseline to 4.45 ± 0.69 and 2.60 ± 0.6 at 3 and 6 months, respectively, in Group A. In Group B, the mean PPD reduced from 7.5 ± 0.89 at baseline to 4.95 ± 0.60 and 2.65 ± 0.59 at 3 and 6 months, respectively. The mean CAL reduced from 7.75 ± 0.85 at baseline to 5.05 ± 0.76 and 3.6 ± 0.68 at 3 and 6 months, respectively, in Group A. In Group B, the mean CAL reduced from 7.70 ± 0.86 at baseline to 5.8 ± 0.7 and 3.75 ± 0.64 at 3 and 6 months, respectively. The mean RDD reduced from 8.13 ± 0.78 and 8.12 ± 0.83 at baseline to 4.27 ± 0.66 and 3.94 ± 0.5 after 6 months in Groups A and B, respectively. After 3 months, a statistically significant reduction in mean PPD and CAL values was noted in Group A while the results were comparable after 6 months. Conclusion: The effectiveness of nHA composite during initial healing phase (3 months) can be attributed to the presence of ECM-collagen in bone graft matrix.

Significantly higher vertical and horizontal bone fill was observed in the experimental group as compared to the control group. Conclusion: The use of CGF showed a positive additive efficacy in enhancing the events of periodontal regeneration in the treatment of Degree II mandibular molar furcation defect. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 180 generalized chronic periodontitis patients (46-55 years) were enrolled, Group 1 (Control group): 60 systemically healthy subjects; Group 2 (Test group): 60 Heavy tobacco smokers; and Group 3 (Test group): 60 uncontrolled type 2 diabetic patients. 15 ml of blood was drawn from all subjects to assess the size outcome, platelet, and leukocyte concentration also to find out the influence of gender on the various parameters of the prepared modified (A-PRF) membrane. Results: Uncontrolled type-2 diabetic patients had maximum height (23.39 ± 1.69 mm) and width (7.26 ± 0.16 mm) of modified (A-PRF) clot when compared to healthy individuals and tobacco smokers. The total number of platelet (245.38 ± 40.72 1000/ul) and leukocyte count (6.11 ± 0.60 1000/ul) and their percentage of concentration were 95.21 ± 2.16% and 77.25% ±1.98%, respectively, and is significantly higher in uncontrolled type-2 diabetic patients (P = 0.05). Females were associated with the larger sized modified (A-PRF) clot with more number of platelets and leukocytes count than males. Conclusions: Size outcome of modified (A-PRF) clot was found to be comparatively larger in uncontrolled type-2 diabetic patients particularly in females of all the groups when compared to males. Among the hematological parameters, the total count as well as the percentage of platelet and leukocyte in modified (A-PRF) membrane was found to be higher in uncontrolled type-2 diabetic patients. Background: PepGen P-15, a xenograft, has proven its periodontal regenerative potential. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is an autologous platelet concentrate which too contributes to periodontal redevelopment through the release of different polypeptide progression factors. The present study intended to evaluate the regenerative potential of PepGen P-15 xenograft when used unaccompanied or in blend with PRF in periodontal intraosseous defects in humans through clinical and a novel computed tomography (CT) scan analysis technique. Materials and Methods: Twelve chronic periodontitis individuals with paired periodontal intraosseous defects were randomly treated either with PepGen P-15 exclusively (Control/Group A) or in concoction with PRF (Test/Group B) utilizing split-mouth study design. Pocket probing depth (PPD), relative attachment level (RAL), and relative position of gingival margin were assessed at 3- and 6-month interval, whereas the linear and volumetric bone defect regeneration were assessed at 6 months postoperatively using CT scan. Results: Both the groups validated statistically significant PPD reduction, RAL gain at 3 and 6 months, but on intergroup comparison, test group CT images revealed significantly greater linear bone gain and volumetric bone gain, with mean difference of 0.73 ± 0.28 (P = 0.018) and 2.70 ± 1.36 (P = 0.06) at 6 months in comparison to the baseline data. Conclusions: PepGen P-15 and PRF blend had better regeneration potential for the management of intrabony defects. Further long-term investigations on large sample size are recommended to authenticate the same.

Background: The study aims to evaluate the effect of adding extracellular matrix (ECM) component – natural collagen to nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (nHA) bone graft in the treatment of intrabony defect in chronic periodontitis patients. Materials and Methods: Forty chronic periodontitis patients having at least one intrabony defect were treated surgically by open flap debridement and the defect grafted (Group A: 20 sites grafted with nHA with natural collagen and Group B: 20 sites grafted with nHA). Plaque index, gingival index, probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), and radiographic defect depth (RDD) were evaluated. Results: The mean PPD reduced from 7.6 ± 0.88 at baseline to 4.45 ± 0.69 and 2.60 ± 0.6 at 3 and 6 months, respectively, in Group A. In Group B, the mean PPD reduced from 7.5 ± 0.89 at baseline to 4.95 ± 0.60 and 2.65 ± 0.59 at 3 and 6 months, respectively. The mean CAL reduced from 7.75 ± 0.85 at baseline to 5.05 ± 0.76 and 3.6 ± 0.68 at 3 and 6 months, respectively, in Group A. In Group B, the mean CAL reduced from 7.70 ± 0.86 at baseline to 5.8 ± 0.7 and 3.75 ± 0.64 at 3 and 6 months, respectively. The mean RDD reduced from 8.13 ± 0.78 and 8.12 ± 0.83 at baseline to 4.27 ± 0.66 and 3.94 ± 0.5 after 6 months in Groups A and B, respectively. After 3 months, a statistically significant reduction in mean PPD and CAL values was noted in Group A while the results were comparable after 6 months. Background: Bone morphogenetic proteins have a powerful osteoinductive capacity and have been used as a new adjunct to graft materials for bone regeneration. The objectives of this systematic review are to assess the amount of radiographic bone fill, clinical attachment level (CAL) gain, and reduction in pocket depth (PD) in patients with intrabony defects in periodontitis patients following the use of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2). Materials and Methods: Electronic bibliographic databases search of Medline, Science Direct, and Google Scholar was made from January 1980 to December 2017. Studies using rhBMP-2 to treat periodontal intrabony defects of the maxillary or mandibular region with follow-up period of at least 6 months were searched. Two reviewers performed the systematic review using the PRISMA Statement for reporting and the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool was used for quality assessment. Conclusion: The rhBMP-2 may provide a promising alternative to traditional grafting procedures therapy that can enhance periodontal regeneration in patients having intrabony defects. Due to limited human studies, it can be concluded that no definitive evidence exists to ascertain the effectiveness of rhBMP-2 in the treatment of intrabony defects in periodontal diseases.

Background: Nature and its products can be utilized for regeneration in periodontal destruction and damage to supporting tissues. We come across the use of various graft materials to reestablish the lost bone and for the long-term survival of teeth. The objective of this study was to evaluate the bone fill efficacy of Morinda citrifolia fruit extract in the periodontal bone defect. Materials and Methods: This randomized study included twenty patients indicated for periodontal regenerative therapy and were equally divided and assigned into the experimental and control group. Open flap debridement alone was performed in the control group, while placement of extract along with open flap debridement was done in the experimental group. Clinical parameters assessed were gingival index, probing pocket depth, and relative attachment level, and the amount of bone fill was assessed using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) at baseline and at 6-month interval. Results: From the values of clinical parameters, there was a mean reduction in probing pocket and gain in attachment level and a 27.7% increase in bone fill in experimental group as compared to the control group from CBCT analysis. Conclusions: The use of M. citrifolia fruit extract in the intraosseous defect was found to be efficacious in terms of relative attachment level and the amount of bone fill, and it had shown some anti-inflammatory affect. Background: The synthetic anorganic bone matrix/cell-binding peptide (ABM/P-15) has displayed an increased fibroblast migration and attachment with bone graft material, thus enhancing periodontal regeneration. The objective of the present study was to evaluate and to correlate the efficacy of open flap debridement (OFD) with and without ABM/P-15 in the treatment of human infrabony periodontal defects. Materials and Methods: A total of 20 chronic periodontitis patients with equal number infrabony defects were randomly selected and assigned into two groups depending on the treatment received: Control group (treated with OFD) and Test group (treated with OFD + ABM/P-15). Clinical parameters recorded included plaque index, gingival index, probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), gingival recession, and radiographic defect depth (RDD) which were evaluated at baseline and 6 months postsurgically. Results: When compared to baseline, both the treatment groups demonstrated improvements in the clinical parameters at 6 months. Test group exhibited a mean PPD reduction of 4.15 ± 1.04 mm, CAL gain of 3.10 ± 1.42 mm, and reduction in RDD of 1.90 ± 0.72 mm postoperatively at 6 months. In contrast to Control group, the Test group showed greater reduction in PPD (P < 0.05) which was statistically significant, greater CAL gain and greater mean RDD reduction (P < 0.001) which was highly significant. Conclusion: In the surgical management of periodontal infrabony defects, Test group elicited in statistically significant PPD reduction, CAL gain, and better infrabony defect fill at 6 months' postoperatively. Background: Simvastatin (SMV), a new locally delivered drug of class statins, is a specific competitive inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-glutaryl coenzyme A reductase. Statins, besides having lipid-lowering abilities, also have pleiotropic effects like host modulation and bone regeneration. The present study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of SMV, 1.2 mg, in an indigenously prepared biodegradable controlled-release gel as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP). Materials and Methods: A total of 60 sites, with pocket depth ≥5 mm, two from each of 30 patients after SRP, were categorized into two treatment groups, for subgingival placement of placebo (Gp 1) or SMV (Gp 2). Clinical parameters were recorded at baseline and at 1, 3 and 6 months comprising plaque index, gingival index, probing pocket depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL). The osseous changes were evaluated radiographically by measuring vertical gain, INFRA 1 and angle of the defect, INFRA 2 from baseline to 6 months. Results: All subjects tolerated the drug, without any post-application complication. The treatment improved the periodontal condition in both the groups but significant reductions in PPD (p= 0.04), and INFRA 1 (p= 0.000), along with gain in CAL (p= 0.02) and INFRA 2 (p= 0.000) were observed in Gp 2. In one site, an unexpected 5 mm decrease in INFRA 1 was found. Conclusion: Local drug delivery of SMV enhanced the beneficial effect of SRP, in pocket reduction, gain in CAL and bone fill.

Background: The objectives of the present study were to establish transgingival probing as an evaluating method in the clinical studies of periodontal regenerative techniques and to compare the effectiveness of transgingival probing to the surgical entry. Materials and Methods: Ten systemically healthy persons (20–50 years) with moderate to severe chronic periodontitis participated in this study. These cases were recruited into the study only when they fulfilled the eligibility criteria. Vertical probing depth (VPD) and horizontal probing depth (HPD) of furcation defects were measured with and without opening the flap, following local anesthesia during initial surgery and at 6 months after collagen membrane placement. The defect fill (DF) was also noted. The mean measurements of clinical parameters were compared by two-tailed paired t-test at 5% level of significance. Results: The difference between the measurements of VPD and HPD taken during transgingival probing and after opening the flap was lie in the range of 0.10–0.30 mm at the time of initial surgery and 6 months after surgery that was not statistically significant. Persons experienced slight discomfort or pain during opening the flap as compared to transgingival probing, and this method was also appreciated by the patients as it is easy, simple and does not involve the surgical procedure. Conclusion: The results of the study suggest that measurements recorded during transgingival probing and after opening the flap do not influence the required outcome of regenerative therapies, i.e., DF that was not statistically significant difference from surgical reentry. Therefore, it was concluded that transgingival probing could be used as evaluating parameters to see the outcome of regenerative surgeries and the surgical reentry procedure may be avoided because it is a second surgical procedure, time-consuming and interrupts the healing process.

Aim: The aim was to evaluate the bonefill in periodontal osseous defects with the help of guided tissue regeneration, bioresorbable membrane (PerioCol) + bone graft (Grabio Glascera) in combination and with bonegraft (Grabio Glascera) alone. Materials and Methods: The study involved total 30 sites in systemically healthy 19 patients. The parameters for evaluation includes plaque index sulcus bleeding index with one or more periodontal osseous defects having (i) probing depth (PD) of ≥ 5 mm (ii) clinical attachment loss (CAL) of ≥ 5 mm and (iii) ≥3 mm of radiographic periodontal osseous defect (iv) bonefill (v) crestal bone loss (vi) defect resolution. The study involved the three wall and two wall defects which should be either located interproximally or involving the furcation area. The statistical analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences, the Wilcoxon signed rank statistic W + for Mann-Whitney U-test. Results: The net gain in PD and CAL after 6 months for Group I ([PerioCol] + [Grabio Glascera]) and Group II (Grabio Glascera) was 3.94 ± 1.81 mm, 3.57 ± 2.21 mm and 3.94 ± 1.81, 3.57 ± 2.21 mm, respectively. The results of the study for Group I and Group II with regards to mean net bonefill, was 3.25 ± 2.32 (58%) mm and 5.14 ± 3.84 (40.26 ± 19.14%) mm, crestal bone loss − 0.25 ± 0.68 mm and − 0.79 ± 1.19 mm. Defect resolution 3.50 ± 2.34 mm and 5.93 ± 4.01 mm, respectively. Conclusion: On comparing both the groups together after 6 months of therapy, the results were equally effective for combination of graft and membrane versus bone graft alone since no statistical significant difference was seen between above parameters for both the groups. Thus, both the treatment modalities are comparable and equally effective.

Background: Various bone graft materials have been used in the treatment of periodontal defects. A synthetic bone substitute material composed of P-15 with anorganic bone mineral has been scantly studied. Hence, the present study was aimed to evaluate and compare the efficacy of anorganic bovine-derived hydroxyapatite matrix (ABM)/cell binding peptide (P-15) in human periodontal infrabony defects with that of open flap debridement (OFD) alone. Materials and Methods: A split-mouth, randomized controlled clinical study was designed to investigate the efficacy of ABM/P-15. In this clinical trial, 10 patients having bilateral periodontal infrabony defects were treated either with ABM/P-15 or OFD and followed for a period of 9 months. At baseline and at 9 months probing pocket depth (PPD), relative attachment level (RAL), depth of a defect, and radiographic bone level were measured; and compared between test and control sites. Results: A statistically significant reduction (P < 0.001) in PPD was observed in test sites compared to control sites. Both sites showed a gain in RAL without any significant difference. Similarly, the radiographic evaluation revealed significantly higher radiographic defect fill in test sites as compared to control sites (P < 0.001). Conclusion: ABM/P-15 bone graft material appears to be useful and beneficial in the treatment of human periodontal infrabony defects.

Background: Due to high prevalence and progression of infrabony defects lead to increase in the possibility of tooth loss. Various regenerative techniques such as guided tissue regeneration, bone grafts, and biomimetic agents have been proposed. Subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) is an autogenous membrane, which contains mesenchymal cells and has osteogenic, chondrogenic, and osteoblastic activities. The present study investigates the effective application of SCTG as an autogenous barrier membrane in the treatment of periodontal infrabony defect. Materials and Methods: Ten patients in the age group of 30–45 years suffering from chronic periodontitis with clinical and radiographic evidence of vertical defects were selected for the study. Clinical parameters evaluated were gingival index, plaque index, probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level, and gingival recession. These parameters were assessed at baseline, 6 and 9 months. Radiographic parameter (defect fill) was evaluated at baseline, 6, and 9 months postoperatively. Sites were treated with PERIOGLAS® and connective tissue graft. Statistical analysis was done using paired t-test. Results: All the patients finished the study. A significant improvement was observed regarding clinical parameters from baseline to 9 months. The radiographic defect fill was seen in all the cases at the end of 9 months, which was statistically significant in comparison with baseline scores. Aim: To assess the clinical outcome by comparing β-tri calcium phosphate (Septodont RTR) TM along with platelet rich plasma (PRP) and β-tri calcium phosphate (β-TCP) alone in intrabony defects, by clinical evaluation in a 6-month analysis. Methodology: Ten patients participated in the study. Using a split-mouth design, interproximal bony defects were surgically treated with either platelet rich plasma (PRP) combined with β-tri calcium phosphate (β-TCP) or β-TCP alone. Plaque Index (PI), Gingival Index, Probing Pocket Depth (PPD), Clinical Attachment Level (CAL) were recorded 6 months after surgery. Results: At 6 months after therapy, the PRP combined with β-TCP group showed mean PPD reduction of 2.50, CAL mean gain of 2.60 + 1.43. The β-TCP group showed mean PPD reduction of 2.80 mm, mean CAL gain of 2.60 mm. On intra-group comparison, there was greater PPD reduction and CAL gain at 6 months in both the groups. In intergroup comparison of PRP/β-TCP and β-TCP alone, there was no statistical significant difference observed. (P = 0.55, and 0.87 for PPD and CAL gain). Conclusion: Both therapies resulted in significant PPD reduction, CAL gain. The present study shows that treatment of intrabony periodontal defects with combination of PRP and β-TCP does not have additional improvements when compared with β-TCP alone within 6 months follow-up.

Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) has been used for more than 10 years in the dental community and has often been thought of as a material of choice for the endodontist. The dental pulp is closely related to periodontal tissues through apical foramina, accessory canals, and dentinal tubules. Due to this interrelationship, pulpal diseases may influence periodontal health and periodontal infections may affect pulpal integrity. It is estimated that pulpal and periodontal problems are responsible for more than 50% of tooth mortality. Thus, these associations recommend an interdisciplinary approach. MTA appears to exhibit significant results even in periodontal procedures as it is the first restorative material that consistently allows for over-growth of cementum and may facilitate periodontal tissue regeneration. Thus, in the present review, an attempt is made to discuss the clinical applications of MTA as an interdisciplinary approach.

Background: During the progression of periodontal disease, the cementum undergoes alterations in its structure and composition. Understanding the nanostructure of cementum, in terms of its mechanical properties, will provide an insight into the milieu that periodontal ligament cells encounter in health and chronic periodontitis. This study aims to analyze the nanomechanical properties of the cervical third of the cementum (transverse section) in health and chronic periodontitis. Materials and Methods: Twenty teeth (10 healthy and 10 periodontally diseased) were collected and the nanomechanical properties of the transverse section of the cervical third cementum were evaluated with depth-sensing nanoindentation technique under dry conditions. A total of 100 nanoindentations were performed to analyze the modulus of elasticity and hardness of cervical third of the cementum. Results: The nanomechanical properties of the healthy cervical third cementum sections were significantly higher (P < 0.05) (hardness: 0.720 ± 0.305 GPa; modulus: 15.420 ± 3.902 GPa) than the diseased cementum section (hardness: 0.422 ± 0.157 GPa; modulus: 11.056 ± 3.434 GPa). Conclusion: The results of our study indicate that the hardness and modulus of elasticity of the cervical third cementum decreases significantly in chronic periodontitis.

Background: The traditional treatment procedures which aimed at treating periodontal disease did not result in true periodontal regeneration. Unpredictability about osseous defect fill after periodontal flap surgery has stemmed in the research of a variety of regenerative materials. This randomized clinical trial was conducted to compare regenerative potential of Biostite ® bone graft material with and without Paroguide ® a bioresorbable membrane in the treatment of periodontal osseous defects., Materials and Methods: Twenty sites from a total of from ten patients were chosen for the study. Those sites were divided into experimental site A (Biostite ® ) and experimental site B (Biostite ® with Paroguide ® ) at random. Plaque index and gingival index (GI) were the clinical parameters noted at baseline, 3 rd , 6 th and 9 th months, whereas the probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level and gingival recession were noted at baseline, 6 th and 9 th months. Radiographic evaluation was made by using computer-assisted densitometric analysis. Intrasurgical measurements were done at baseline and 9 months. Statistical analysis was done using paired t -test and un-paired t -test., Results: Both experimental site A and B showed a significant reduction in plaque and GI. All clinical parameters as well as radiographic image analysis showed highly significant improvement from baseline to 9 months for both sites. Background: As current ethical codes preclude determining whether the clinical improvements obtained with the use of three-dimensional (3D)-printed scaffolds represent true periodontal regeneration, the histological proof of evidence for regeneration must be demonstrated in animal models. Thus, this systematic review investigated the regenerative potential of 3D-printed scaffolds in animal models of periodontal defects., Materials and Methods: A systematic search was performed in four databases (Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus) to identify preclinical controlled studies that investigated the use of 3D-printed scaffolds for periodontal regeneration. Studies limited to periodontal defects treated with 3D scaffolds were eligible for inclusion. The primary outcome was periodontal regeneration, assessed histologically as new bone, cementum, and periodontal ligament (PDL). This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Quality was assessed according to the SRYCLE score., Results: Six studies met the inclusion criteria. Scaffolds were designed using computer-aided design software. While the absence of a scaffold resulted in defects repaired mainly with fibrous connective tissue, the use of nonguiding 3D scaffolds promoted some bone formation. Notably, the regeneration of cementum and functional PDL fibers perpendicularly inserted into the root surface and the alveolar bone was limited to the defects treated with multi-compartment fiber-guiding or ion-containing 3D scaffolds. The identification of stem cells in the periodontal ligament together with the growing concept of tissue engineering has opened new vistas in periodontal regenerative medicine. In this regard, ribonucleic acid interference (RNAi) opens a new gate way for a novel RNA based approach in periodontal management. This paper aims to summarize the current opinion on the mechanisms underlying RNAi, in vitro and in vivo existing applications in the dental research, which could lead to their future use in periodontal regeneration.

Background: The aim of the present clinical study was to compare the efficacy of bovine porous bone mineral (BPBM) with and without platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for the treatment of periodontal intrabony defects. Materials and Methods: Twenty eight identical bilateral periodontal intrabony defects were selected from 14 chronic periodontitis patients. The subjects were randomly assigned to test group (BPBM+PRP) or the control group (BPBM). The clinical, radiographic, and intrasurgical (re-entry) measurements were made at baseline and at 9 months postoperatively. Results: Both treatment modalities resulted in significant reduction in probing depth and gain in clinical attachment level as compared to baseline values. The probing depth reduction was 6.20±1.40 mm in BPBM and 6.60±1.43 mm for the BPBM/PRP-treated sites. The gain in clinical attachment level observed was 4.16±1.05 mm for BPBM and 4.70±0.76 mm for the BPBM/PRP group. Radiographically, there was a significant defect fill (3.83±1.01 mm) for the BPBM group and (4.04±1.77 mm) in the BPBM/PRP group. Similar trend was observed between the two groups in relation to intrasurgical parameters. Conclusions: The combination therapy (BPBM+PRP) showed more favorable clinical outcome in the treatment of intrabony defects than the BPBM alone group, although the mean difference between the two groups was statistically nonsignificant.

Background and Objectives: The primary goal of periodontal therapy is to restore the tooth supporting tissues lost due to periodontal disease. The aim of the present study was to compare the efficacy of combination of type I collagen (GTR membrane) and xenogenic bone graft with open flap debridement (OFD) in treatment of periodontal intrabony defects. Materials and Methods: Twenty paired intrabony defects were surgically treated using split mouth design. The defects were randomly assigned to treatment with OFD + collagen membrane + bone graft (Test) or OFD alone (Control). The clinical efficacy of two treatment modalities was evaluated at 9 month postoperatively by clinical, radiographical, and intrasurgical (re-entry) parameters. The measurements included probing pocket depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), gingival recession (GR), bone fill (BF), bone density (BD) and intra bony component (INTRA). Results: The mean reduction in PD at 0-9 month was 3.3±0.82 mm and CAL gain of 3.40±1.51 mm occurred in the collagen membrane + bone graft (Test) group; corresponding values for OFD (Control) were 2.20±0.63 mm and 1.90±0.57 mm. Similar pattern of improvement was observed when radiographical and intra-surgical (re-entry) post operative evaluation was made. All improvement in different parameters was statistically significant (P< 0.01). Interpretation and Conclusion: Treatment with a combination of collagen membrane and bone graft led to a significantly more favorable clinical outcome in intrabony defects as compared to OFD alone.

Background: The objectives of the present study were to establish transgingival probing as an evaluating method in the clinical studies of periodontal regenerative techniques and to compare the effectiveness of transgingival probing to the surgical entry. Materials and Methods: Ten systemically healthy persons (20-50 years) with moderate to severe chronic periodontitis participated in this study. These cases were recruited into the study only when they fulfilled the eligibility criteria. Vertical probing depth (VPD) and horizontal probing depth (HPD) of furcation defects were measured with and without opening the flap, following local anesthesia during initial surgery and at 6 months after collagen membrane placement. The defect fill (DF) was also noted. The mean measurements of clinical parameters were compared by two-tailed paired t-test at 5% level of significance. Results: The difference between the measurements of VPD and HPD taken during transgingival probing and after opening the flap was lie in the range of 0.10-0.30 mm at the time of initial surgery and 6 months after surgery that was not statistically significant. Persons experienced slight discomfort or pain during opening the flap as compared to transgingival probing, and this method was also appreciated by the patients as it is easy, simple and does not involve the surgical procedure. Conclusion: The results of the study suggest that measurements recorded during transgingival probing and after opening the flap do not influence the required outcome of regenerative therapies, i.e., DF that was not statistically significant difference from surgical reentry. Therefore, it was concluded that transgingival probing could be used as evaluating parameters to see the outcome of regenerative surgeries and the surgical reentry procedure may be avoided because it is a second surgical procedure, time-consuming and interrupts the healing process. Background: Simvastatin (SMV), a new locally delivered drug of class statins, is a specific competitive inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-glutaryl coenzyme A reductase. Statins, besides having lipid-lowering abilities, also have pleiotropic effects like host modulation and bone regeneration. The present study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of SMV, 1.2 mg, in an indigenously prepared biodegradable controlled-release gel as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP). Materials and Methods: A total of 60 sites, with pocket depth =5 mm, two from each of 30 patients after SRP, were categorized into two treatment groups, for subgingival placement of placebo (Gp 1) or SMV (Gp 2). Clinical parameters were recorded at baseline and at 1, 3 and 6 months comprising plaque index, gingival index, probing pocket depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL). The osseous changes were evaluated radiographically by measuring vertical gain, INFRA 1 and angle of the defect, INFRA 2 from baseline to 6 months. Results: All subjects tolerated the drug, without any post-application complication. The treatment improved the periodontal condition in both the groups but significant reductions in PPD (p= 0.04), and INFRA 1 (p= 0.000), along with gain in CAL (p= 0.02) and INFRA 2 (p=0.000) were observed in Gp 2. In one site, an unexpected 5 mm decrease in INFRA 1 was found. Conclusion: Local drug delivery of SMV enhanced the beneficial effect of SRP, in pocket reduction, gain in CAL and bone fill. Background: Various bone graft materials have been used in the treatment of periodontal defects. A synthetic bone substitute material composed of P-15 with anorganic bone mineral has been scantly studied. Hence, the present study was aimed to evaluate and compare the efficacy of anorganic bovine-derived hydroxyapatite matrix (ABM)/cell binding peptide (P-15) in human periodontal infrabony defects with that of open flap debridement (OFD) alone. Materials and Methods: A split-mouth, randomized controlled clinical study was designed to investigate the efficacy of ABM/P-15. In this clinical trial, 10 patients having bilateral periodontal infrabony defects were treated either with ABM/P-15 or OFD and followed for a period of 9 months. At baseline and at 9 months probing pocket depth (PPD), relative attachment level (RAL), depth of a defect, and radiographic bone level were measured; and compared between test and control sites. Results: A statistically significant reduction (P < 0.001) in PPD was observed in test sites compared to control sites. Both sites showed a gain in RAL without any significant difference. Similarly, the radiographic evaluation revealed significantly higher radiographic defect fill in test sites as compared to control sites (P < 0.001). Aim: The aim was to evaluate the bonefill in periodontal osseous defects with the help of guided tissue regeneration, bioresorbable membrane (PerioCol) + bone graft (Grabio Glascera) in combination and with bonegraft (Grabio Glascera) alone. Materials and Methods: The study involved total 30 sites in systemically healthy 19 patients. The parameters for evaluation includes plaque index sulcus bleeding index with one or more periodontal osseous defects having (i) probing depth (PD) of ≥ 5 mm (ii) clinical attachment loss (CAL) of ≥ 5 mm and (iii) ≥3 mm of radiographic periodontal osseous defect (iv) bonefill (v) crestal bone loss (vi) defect resolution. The study involved the three wall and two wall defects which should be either located interproximally or involving the furcation area. The statistical analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences, the Wilcoxon signed rank statistic W + for Mann-Whitney U-test. Results: The net gain in PD and CAL after 6 months for Group I ([PerioCol] + [Grabio Glascera]) and Group II (Grabio Glascera) was 3.94 ± 1.81 mm, 3.57 ± 2.21 mm and 3.94 ± 1.81, 3.57 ± 2.21 mm, respectively. The results of the study for Group I and Group II with regards to mean net bonefill, was 3.25 ± 2.32 (58%) mm and 5.14 ± 3.84 (40.26 ± 19.14%) mm, crestal bone loss - 0.25 ± 0.68 mm and - 0.79 ± 1.19 mm. Defect resolution 3.50 ± 2.34 mm and 5.93 ± 4.01 mm, respectively. Conclusion: On comparing both the groups together after 6 months of therapy, the results were equally effective for combination of graft and membrane versus bone graft alone since no statistical significant difference was seen between above parameters for both the groups. Background: Nano-sized ceramics may represent a promising class of bone graft substitutes due to their improved osseointegrative properties. Nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (NcHA) binds to bone and stimulate bone healing by stimulation of osteoblast activity. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), an intimate assembly of cytokines, glycan chains, and structural glycoproteins enmeshed within a slowly polymerized fibrin network, has the potential to accelerate soft and hard tissue healing. The present study aims to explore the clinical and radiographical outcome of NcHA bone graft with or without PRF, in the treatment of intrabony periodontal defects. Materials and Methods: In a split-mouth study design, 20 patients having two almost identical intrabony defects with clinical probing depth of at least 6 mm were selected for the study. Selected sites were randomly divided into two groups. In Group I, mucoperiosteal flap elevation followed by the placement of NcHA was done. In Group II, mucoperiosteal flap elevation, followed by the placement of NcHA with PRF was done. Clinical and radiographic parameters were recorded at baseline and at 6-month postoperatively. Results: Both treatment groups showed a significant probing pocket depth (PPD) reduction, clinical attachment gain, increase bone density 6-month after surgery compared with baseline. However, there was a significantly greater PPD reduction and clinical attachment gain when PRF was added to NcHA. The need to increase the predictability of successful periodontal regeneration has led to the use of cell-stimulating proteins in combination with osteoconductive scaffolds and cells based on the principles of tissue engineering. The present case report describes the treatment of an intrabony defect with recombinant human platelet derived growth factor (rhPDGF) + β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP). A 25-year-old patient presented with a probing pocket depth of 9 mm mesial to the left maxillary molar. The radiograph revealed an intrabony defect with a depth of 4.23 mm. The defect was treated by open flap debridement and grafting with rhPDGF + β-TCP. On 9 months follow-up, the pocket depth reduced to 3 mm and the defect was completely filled as observed in radiographs and surgical re-entry. A gain in alveolar crest height was also observed. The aim of the present meta-analysis is to determine the clinical and radiographic outcomes of using platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) for the treatment of periodontal intra-bony defect (IBD) compared with open flap debridement (OFD). MEDLINE/PubMed, EBSCO and Cochrane database were used to identify studies in English language published from January 1, 2005 to January 31, 2013. An additional hand search of the relevant journals and of the bibliographies of the paper identified was also performed. Articles retrieved were screened using specific inclusion criteria by five independent reviewers: Studies investigating the effect of platelet concentrate in surgical procedure for the treatment of periodontal intra osseous defects compared with the control group in which platelet concentrate was not used were included. Five relevant articles were selected for the meta-analysis of which 3 articles were retrieved after electronic search and two articles were included after hand search. The number of patients in studies ranged from 15 to 62 (32-90 sites) with mean age ranging from 29.47 to 39.7. A total of 298 sites were treated using PRF either in combination with graft or as a monotherapy in comparison to traditional OFD procedure. The meta-analysis showed a standard mean difference of 0.95 mm; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.20-1.71 in clinical attachment level (CAL) and 2.33 mm; 95% CI: 1.43-3.23 in IBD after treatment of IBD with PRF compared with OFD. The meta-analysis showed clinically significant improvements in periodontal parameters such as CAL, IBD, and reduction in probing depth when IBDs were treated with PRF alone when compared to OFD. Background and Objective: Hydroxyapatite (HA) and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) grafts have shown to be effective in promoting the clinical signs of periodontal regeneration in intrabony defects. The aim of our study was to clinically and radiographically evaluate the efficacy of HA and β-TCP composite bone graft material in the treatment of intrabony three-wall defect. Materials and Methods: Twenty patients participated in this study. Interproximal bony defects were surgically treated with a combination of HA-βTCP (biphasic calcium phosphate). Changes in clinical parameters such as gingival status, probing pocket depth, clinical attachment, and radiographic estimation of the amount of bone fill were evaluated after 6 months postoperatively. Statistical Analysis Used: Student's "t" test. Results: This treatment modality resulted in significant pocket depth reduction and clinical attachment gain which were observed to be 2.938 mm (47.04%) and 3.188 mm (29.09%), respectively. The defect fill as seen radiographically was 3.204 mm (63.195%). All the differences were highly significant and in favor of postoperative group. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that HA-βTCP (biphasic calcium phosphate) provides an added regenerative effect in promoting the clinical resolution of intrabony three-wall defects in patients with periodontitis. Background: During the progression of periodontal disease, the cementum undergoes alterations in its structure and composition. Understanding the nanostructure of cementum, in terms of its mechanical properties, will provide an insight into the milieu that periodontal ligament cells encounter in health and chronic periodontitis. This study aims to analyze the nanomechanical properties of the cervical third of the cementum (transverse section) in health and chronic periodontitis. Materials and Methods: Twenty teeth (10 healthy and 10 periodontally diseased) were collected and the nanomechanical properties of the transverse section of the cervical third cementum were evaluated with depth-sensing nanoindentation technique under dry conditions. A total of 100 nanoindentations were performed to analyze the modulus of elasticity and hardness of cervical third of the cementum. Results: The nanomechanical properties of the healthy cervical third cementum sections were significantly higher (P < 0.05) (hardness: 0.720 ± 0.305 GPa; modulus: 15.420 ± 3.902 GPa) than the diseased cementum section (hardness: 0.422 ± 0.157 GPa; modulus: 11.056 ± 3.434 GPa). Conclusion: The results of our study indicate that the hardness and modulus of elasticity of the cervical third cementum decreases significantly in chronic periodontitis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: To assess the clinical outcome by comparing β-tri calcium phosphate (Septodont RTR)TM along with platelet rich plasma (PRP) and β-tri calcium phosphate (β-TCP) alone in intrabony defects, by clinical evaluation in a 6-month analysis. Methodology: Ten patients participated in the study. Using a split-mouth design, interproximal bony defects were surgically treated with either platelet rich plasma (PRP) combined with β-tri calcium phosphate (β-TCP) or β-TCP alone. Plaque Index (PI), Gingival Index, Probing Pocket Depth (PPD), Clinical Attachment Level (CAL) were recorded 6 months after surgery. Results: At 6 months after therapy, the PRP combined with β-TCP group showed mean PPD reduction of 2.50, CAL mean gain of 2.60 + 1.43. The β-TCP group showed mean PPD reduction of 2.80 mm, mean CAL gain of 2.60 mm. On intra-group comparison, there was greater PPD reduction and CAL gain at 6 months in both the groups. In intergroup comparison of PRP/β-TCP and β-TCP alone, there was no statistical significant difference observed. (P = 0.55, and 0.87 for PPD and CAL gain). Conclusion: Both therapies resulted in significant PPD reduction, CAL gain. The present study shows that treatment of intrabony periodontal defects with combination of PRP and β-TCP does not have additional improvements when compared with β-TCP alone within 6 months follow-up. Background and Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of bovine-derived xenograft (Bio-Oss Collagen) and Type I collagen membrane (Bio-Gide) with bovine-derived xenograft (Bio-Oss Collagen) and fibrin f?ibronectin sealing system (TISSEEL) in the treatment of periodontal infrabony defects. Materials and Methods: Fourteen healthy patients in the age range of 20 to 60 years, showing bilateral or contralateral infrabony defects were selected. The defects were assigned randomly to Site A (bovine-derived xenograft [Bio-Oss Collagen] with bioresorbable Type I collagen membrane [Bio-Gide]) and Site B (fibrin fibronectin sealing system [TISSEEL] with bovine-derived xenograft [Bio-Oss Collagen]). The radiographic parameters were recorded at baseline, 6 months, and 9 months postoperatively. Results: All fourteen patients returned for recall at regular intervals till the completion of the study. Both the experimental groups showed clinically and radiographically statistically significant reduction in probing pocket depth and gain in clinical attachment level. Conclusion: Both groups showed potential for enhancing the periodontal regeneration with no statistically significant between the two groups; however, on comparison the Bio-Oss Collagen and TISSEEL group were slightly better.
