A method is described for the purification of milligram quantities of carrier free actinium by homogeneous precipitation of the oxalate. An investigation of the ignition of actinium oxalate is also described.

The separation of yttrium-90 from strontium-90 or lanthanum-140 from barium-140 was carried out with an anion exchange resin in the carbonate form. It was found possible to obtain carrier-free yttrium-90 or lanthanum-140 efficiently. Moreover it is possible to separate yttrium-90 repeatedly from the carbonate solution by this method.

Measurements of the distribution of carrier-free silver-110 m between mercury and aqueous solutions of mercurous perchlorate indicate that the equilibrium constant expression for the reaction, 2 Hg + 2 Ag + (aq·) = Hg 2 2+ aq·) + 2 Ag (Hg) , is valid at silver (I) concentrations as low as ∼2 × 10−10f.

A method is described for the separation in high yields of carrier-free 46Sc and 48,49V activities from deuteron-bombarded titanium cyclotron targets. The procedure involves distillation of V and Ti chlorides (with Sc and Ca chlorides left behind), separation of V from solution in refluxing TiCl4 on a fresh CuCl surface, and removal of milligramme amounts of Ti by ion exchange.

The isotopic exchange reactions of carrier-free 32P formed in elementary sulphur, with such compounds as PCl3, POCl3, PSCl3 were studied. Exchange was observed in the case of POCl3 and PSCl3. It was catalysed by AlCl3. Only the radiophosphorus atoms present in deaerated sulphur targets show this exchange. This study presents further evidence that two chemical states of carrier-free 32P may be present in irradiated sulphur targets, depending on the presence or absence of oxygen included in the crystalline lattice of irradiated sulphur.

Carrier-free Mg 28 may be produced by the α,3 p reaction in aluminium. The practical threshold for the reaction is ∼35 MeV and the cross-section with 41 MeV α particles is ∼0·2 mb.
