This article explores the concept of reproductive justice, which aims to address social, legal, and health disparities faced by birthing people. It traces the origins of this framework to US Black feminist activism and emphasizes its focus on the right to have children, the right not to have children, and the right to parent children in a safe and healthy environment. The article also discusses the challenges faced by LGBTQSIA+ individuals in accessing reproductive care and the importance of solidarity among different demographic groups. It concludes by highlighting various articles in a special issue that center the experiences of non-heteronormative individuals seeking reproductive care and advocate for the realization of reproductive justice goals. The text also examines the connection between conservative political backlash and the legacy of eugenics in the global north, particularly in the US where the restriction of abortion access is seen as a means to slow the decline of white birth rates. Similar far-right populism in Europe promotes a "birth-rate agenda" rooted in reproductive racism. The text also addresses the weaponization of fear against immigrants and LGBTQ+ individuals and the rise of homophobic legislation in formerly colonized countries. The authors stress the need for transformative interventions and the integration of LGBTQ+ concerns in reproductive justice research. [Extracted from the article]
