Thin layer chromatography with densitometric detection is utilized for the quantitative analysis of SurfadoneTM QSP in formulated products. Iodoplatinate reagent is used to derivatize the quaternary ammonium surfactant, yielding a colored species with a maximum absorbance at 525 nm. The high polarity of the surfactant is demonstrated by comparison of its chromatographic behavior to that of other commercially available materials. Prototype formulations (foaming conditioner, styling glaze) were analyzed yielding excellent accuracy and precision.

A method is described for the quantitative reversed-phase HPLC analysis of n-alkyl iodides obtained from HI cleavage of linear alcohol ethoxylated surfactants. The method is an improvement over previous techniques in that the detection is both iodide specific and is demonstrated for carbon chain lengths from 1 to 18.

Single column anion chromatography is used for the determination of Suttocide(r)A in shampoo, styling gel, conditioner, and skin moisturizer formulations. After quantitative decomposition of the analyte, the resulting sodium glycinate is separated on a polymeric anion exchange column, using a mobile phase of 0.15 M NaOH. Specific detection is accomplished using integrated amperometry at a gold electrode. Inorganic anions as well as other formulation ingredients do not interfere under the analytical conditions, allowing for a detection limit of 50 ppm Suttocide(r)A in the samples.

Single column anion chromatography with conductivity detection has been used for the determination of sodium isethionate. A mobile phase of aqueous phthalic acid - methanol (pH 2.5) allows for the separation of isethionate from chloride and alkyl isethionate ester surfactants. Commercially available samples of sodium isethionate and alkyl esters were analyzed by the described procedure.
