Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first cryogenic experiment searching for 0 νββ decay that has been able to reach the one-tonne mass scale. The detector, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Italy, consists of an array of 988 TeO 2 crystals arranged in a compact cylindrical structure of 19 towers. CUORE began its first physics data run in 2017 at a base temperature of about 10 mK and in April 2021 released its 3 rd result of the search for 0 νββ, corresponding to a tonne-year of TeO 2 exposure. This is the largest amount of data ever acquired with a solid state detector and the most sensitive measurement of 0 νββ decay in 130Te ever conducted. We present the current status of CUORE search for 0 νββ with the updated statistics of one tonne-yr. We finally give an update of the CUORE background model and the measurement of the 130Te 2 νββ decay half-life and decay to excited states of 130Xe , studies performed using an exposure of 300.7 kg yr.

Abstract

The CUORE experiment is a ton-scale array of TeO 2 cryogenic bolometers located at the underground Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN), in Italy. The CUORE detector consists of 988 crystals operated as source and detector at a base temperature of ∼ 10 mK. Such cryogenic temperature is reached and maintained by means of a custom built cryogen-free dilution cryostat, designed with the aim of minimizing the vibrational noise and the environmental radioactivity. The primary goal of CUORE is the search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te , but thanks to its large target mass and ultra-low background it is suitable for the study of other rare processes as well, such as the neutrinoless double beta decay of 128Te. This tellurium isotope is an attractive candidate for the search of this process, due to its high natural isotopic abundance of 31.75%. The transition energy at (866.7 ± 0.7) keV lies in a highly populated region of the energy spectrum, dominated by the contribution of the two-neutrino double beta decay of 130Te. As the first ton-scale infrastructure operating cryogenic TeO 2 bolometers in stable conditions, CUORE is able to achieve a factor > 10 higher sensitivity to the neutrinoless double beta decay of this isotope with respect to past direct experiments.

Abstract

CUORE is a tonne-scale cryogenic experiment located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso that exploits bolometric technique to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. Thanks to its very low background and large mass, CUORE is also a powerful tool to study a broad class of phenomena, such as solar axions and WIMP scattering. The ability to conduct such sensitive searches crucially depends on the energy threshold, which has to be kept as low as possible. In this contribution, we show how the trigger algorithm affects the sensitivity to low-energy phenomena and the interpretation of the energy spectrum. In particular, we focus on the impact that the trigger algorithm has on the identification of the coincidence events among different crystals and, consequently, on the reconstruction of the background.

Abstract

The cryogenic underground observatory for rare events (CUORE) is a cryogenic experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay (0 νββ) of 130Te. The detector consists of an array of 988TeO2 crystals arranged in a compact cylindrical structure of 19 towers. We report the CUORE initial operations and optimization campaigns. We then present the CUORE results on 0 νββ and 2 νββ decay of 130Te obtained from the analysis of the physics data acquired in 2017.

Abstract

The CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment will search for neutrinoless double beta decay in {Mathematical expression}Te. Observation of the process would unambiguously establish that neutrinos are Majorana particles as well as provide information about the absolute neutrino mass scale and mass hierarchy.The CUORE setup will consist of an array of 988 tellurium dioxide crystals (containing 206 kg of {Mathematical expression}Te in total), operated as bolometers at a temperature of {Mathematical expression}10 mK. The experiment is now under construction at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Italy. As a first step towards CUORE, a tower (CUORE-0) has been assembled and is taking data. Here a detailed description of the CUORE-0 tower and its performance is reported. The status of the CUORE experiment and its expected sensitivity will then be discussed. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

Abstract

Bolometric detectors are excellent devices for the investigation of neutrinoless double-beta decay ( $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ ). The observation of such decay would demonstrate the violation of lepton number, and at the same time, it would necessarily imply that neutrinos are Majorana particles. The sensitivity of cryogenic detectors based on TeO $$_2$$ is strongly limited by the $$\alpha $$ -background in the region of interest for the 0 $$\nu \beta \beta $$ of $$^{130}$$ Te. It has been demonstrated that particle identification in TeO $$_2$$ bolometers is possible, measuring the Cherenkov light produced by particle interactions. However, the discrimination efficiency is low, and an event-by-event identification with NTD-based light detectors has to be demonstrated. We will discuss the performance of a highly sensitive light detector exploiting the Neganov-Luke effect for signal amplification. The detector, being operated with NTD thermistor and coupled to a 750 g TeO $$_2$$ crystal, shows the ability for an event-by-event identification of electron/gamma and $$\alpha $$ particles. The obtained results demonstrate the possibility to enhance the sensitivity of TeO $$_2$$ -based 0 $$\nu \beta \beta $$ experiment to an unprecedented level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We present a prototype scintillating bolometer for the search for neutrinoless double β decay of Mo, consisting of a single ≈5 g ZnMoO crystal operated aboveground in the 20-30 mK temperature range. The scintillation light is read out by two thin Ge bolometers. The phonon signals are collected by NTD Ge thermistors. The ZnMoO crystal was grown with an advanced method (low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique) and after purification of molybdenum. The results are very encouraging: the intrinsic energy resolution of the heat channel is ≈800 eV FWHM, the α/ β rejection factor (crucial for background suppression) is better than 99.9% in the region of interest for double β decay (≈3 MeV), and the radiopurity of ZnMoO looks substantially improved with respect to previous devices. Abstract

The 1-ton-scale CUORE detector is made of 988 $${{{\hbox {TeO}}}}_2$$ crystals operated as cryogenic bolometers at a working temperature of $$\sim 10{{{\hbox { mK}}}}$$ . In order to provide the necessary cooling power at 4 K stage, a total of five pulse tube (PT) refrigerators are used. The PTs make the cryogenic system reliable and stable, but have the downside that mechanical vibrations at low frequencies (1.4 Hz and related harmonics) are injected into the experimental apparatus. An active noise cancellation technique has been developed in order to reduce such effect by taking advantage from the coherent interference of the pressure oscillations originated by the different PTs. The technique that will be presented consists in controlling the relative phases of the pressure waves running inside the CUORE PT lines, in order to achieve the lowest detector noise. By reducing the power of PT harmonics by a factor up to $$10^4$$ , it drastically suppresses the overall noise RMS on the CUORE detector. In the following, we demonstrate the reliability and effectiveness of the technique, showing that the optimization of the detector noise level is possible in different experimental conditions.

Abstract

In the view of exploring the inverted hierarchy region future experiments investigating the neutrinoless double beta decay have to demand for detectors with excellent energy resolution and zero background in the energy region of interest. Cryogenic scintillating bolometers are very suitable detectors for this task since they provide particle discrimination: the simultaneous detection of the phonon and light signal allows us to identify the interacting type of particle and thus guarantees a suppression of $$\alpha $$ -induced backgrounds, the key-issue for next-generation tonne-scale bolometric experiments. The LUCIFER project aims at running the first array of enriched scintillating Zn $$^{\text {82}}$$ Se bolometers (total mass of about 8kg of $$^{\text {82}}$$ Se) with a background level as low as 10 $$^{\text {--3}}$$ counts/(keV kg y) in the energy region of interest. The main effort is currently focused on the finalization of the crystal growth procedure in order to achieve high quality Zn $$^{\text {82}}$$ Se crystals both in terms of radiopurity and bolometric properties. We present results from tests of such crystals operated at mK temperatures which demonstrate the excellent background rejection capabilities of this detection approach towards a background-free demonstrator experiment. Besides, the high purity of the enriched $$^{\text {82}}$$ Se material allows us to establish the most stringent limits on the half-life of the double beta decay of $$^{\text {82}}$$ Se on excited levels.
