Superconducting transition-edge sensors (TESs) used in X-ray and γ -ray microcalorimeters suffer degraded performance if cooled in a magnetic field B sufficient to trap flux in the sensors. We report measurements of γ -ray TESs before and after implementing measures to reduce stray B fields from sources inside and outside the cryostat. These measurements showed a correlation between anomalous features in TES current–voltage (IV) curves and degraded energy resolution. After reducing internal sources of stray B field and improving shielding against external sources, both IV curves and energy resolution improved. Finally, we placed magnetized screws with remnant fields ∼ 10 μ T near similar γ -ray TESs in a different type of detector package and observed the same effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diffuse X-ray Explorer is a proposed X-ray spectroscopic survey experiment for the China Space Station. Its detector assembly contains the transition edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeter and readout electronics based on the superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) on the cold stage. The cold stage is thermally connected to the ADR stage, and a Kevlar suspension is used to stabilize and isolate it from the 4 K environment. TES and SQUID are both sensitive to the magnetic field, so a hybrid shielding structure consisting of an outer Cryoperm shield and an inner niobium shield is used to attenuate the magnetic field. In addition, IR/optical/UV photons can produce shot noise and thus degrade the energy resolution of the TES microcalorimeter. A blocking filter assembly is designed to minimize the effects. In it, five filters are mounted at different temperature stages, reducing the probability of IR/optical/UV photons reaching the detector through multiple reflections between filters and absorption. Metallic magnetic calorimeters (MMC) are low-temperature particle detectors based on calorimetry. They typically operate at temperatures below 100 mK. They utilize a metallic paramagnetic temperature sensor to convert the temperature rise of an absorber, during the absorption of energetic particles, into a change in magnetic flux sensed by a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). Since the SQUID has a high sensitivity to magnetic signals, the MMC system is very sensitive to external magnetic field interference. The magnetic shielding effect of the MMC directly affects its detection capability. Therefore, the design of the MMC magnetic shield system is particularly important. In this study, a set of MMC magnetic shields is designed based on the principle of magnetic shielding. The design is optimized using the COMSOL magnetic field simulation module by varying relevant parameters, such as the thickness and height of the shields as well as the diameter of the radioactive source hole, which determines the magnetic shielding effect. Through the simulation, the optimized magnetic shielding device can reduce the magnetic field interference of 2–0.0264 nT. The value can be further reduced by one order of magnitude if a high-permeability material with superior performance is used. The Simons Observatory (SO) includes four telescopes that will measure the temperature and polarization of the cosmic microwave background using over 60,000 highly sensitive transition-edge bolometers (TES). These multichroic TES bolometers are read out by a microwave RF SQUID multiplexing system with a multiplexing factor of 910. Given that both TESes and SQUIDs are susceptible to magnetic field pickup and that it is hard to predict how they will respond to such fields, it is important to characterize the magnetic response of these systems empirically. This information can then be used to limit spurious signals by informing magnetic shielding designs for the detectors and readout. This paper focuses on measurements of magnetic pickup with different magnetic shielding configurations for the SO universal multiplexing module (UMM), which contains the SQUIDs, associated resonators, and TES bias circuit. The magnetic pickup of a prototype UMM was tested under three shielding configurations: no shielding (copper packaging), aluminum packaging for the UMM, and a tin/lead-plated shield surrounding the entire dilution refrigerator 100 mK cold stage. We also present measurements of the pickup in the UMM when aluminum feedhorns are installed. The measurements show that the aluminum packaging outperforms the copper packaging by a shielding factor of 8-10, and adding the tin/lead-plated 1K shield further increases the relative shielding factor in the aluminum configuration by 1-2 orders of magnitude. The addition of feedhorns provides a factor of 30 improvement when the tin/lead shield is not installed and a factor of 5 improvement when it is. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present magnetic field sensitivity measurements of microwave SQUID multiplexers designed for bolometric applications. These devices are often used in environments with changing external magnetic fields, due to either motion through Earth's field or radiation from other pieces of instrumentation. To minimize the pickup of magnetic fields, these multiplexers utilize gradiometric SQUIDs, but residual pickup remains and must be characterized in order to design adequate magnetic shielding for a given application. To study the perpendicular field response, we utilize a single-axis cryogenic Helmholtz coil mounted to the mixing chamber of a dilution refrigerator, calibrated with a cryogenic fluxgate magnetometer. Measurements were made on multiplexer devices across varying microwave readout frequencies for AC magnetic fields from 0.01 to 100 Hz. We measure the magnetic field sensitivity of the multiplexer devices to be 0.1–0.3 ϕ 0 /Gauss, equivalent to an effective area of gradiometric failure of 2–6 μm 2 .Please check if the corresponding author affiliation is correctly identified.This looks correct to me. We have successfully developed and tested a compact shielded superconducting (SSC) magnet with a FeCoV magnetic shield. This was developed for the PrNi5-based nuclear demagnetization refrigerator which can keep temperatures below 1 mK continuously (CNDR) (Toda et al. in J Phys Conf Ser 969:012093, 2018). The clear bore diameter, outer diameter, and total length of the SSC magnet are 22, 42, and 169 mm, respectively, and it produces the maximum field of 1.38 T at an electric current of 6 A. In order to realize both the compactness and the high shielding performance, we carefully chose material and optimized design of the magnetic shield by numerical simulations of the field distribution based on typical magnetization curves of several candidate materials with high permeability. We also measured the heat generated by sweeping the SSC magnet in vacuum to be 248 mJ per field cycle. This value agrees very well with an estimation from the measured magnetic hysteresis of the superconducting wire used to wind the magnet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We integrated a TES X-ray spectrometer with a charged kaon beam line at J-PARC to perform X-ray spectroscopy of kaonic helium atoms. Limited beam intensity and a broad beam spot size made it crucial to increase the detector acceptance angle as much as possible, requiring significant development. To this end, our TES system shared the same vacuum with a cryogenic system of the liquid helium experimental target. We also specially developed a target cell for liquid helium and a thinned aperture array on top of the TES detector. Additionally, thermal and magnetic shields and infrared filters were optimized in terms of a larger acceptance angle and energy resolution of the detector. Branches of cosmic inflationary models, such as slow-roll inflation, predict a background of primordial gravitational waves that imprints a unique odd-parity "B-mode" pattern in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) at amplitudes that are within experimental reach. The BICEP/Keck (BK) experiment targets this primordial signature, the amplitude of which is parameterized by the tensor-to-scalar ratio r, by observing the polarized microwave sky through the exceptionally clean and stable atmosphere at the South Pole. B-mode measurements require an instrument with exquisite sensitivity, tight control of systematics, and wide frequency coverage to disentangle the primordial signal from the Galactic foregrounds. BICEP Array represents the most recent stage of the BK program and comprises four BICEP3-class receivers observing at 30/40, 95, 150 and 220/270 GHz. The 30/40 GHz receiver will be deployed at the South Pole during the 2019/2020 austral summer. After 3 full years of observations with 30,000+ detectors, BICEP Array will measure primordial gravitational waves to a precision σ (r) between 0.002 and 0.004, depending on foreground complexity and the degree of lensing removal. In this paper, we give an overview of the instrument, highlighting the design features in terms of cryogenics, magnetic shielding, detectors and readout architecture as well as reporting on the integration and tests that are ongoing with the first receiver at 30/40 GHz. LiteBIRD is a JAXA-led L-Class mission aimed at the study of B-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background. Measurements on 15 bandwidth from 34 to 448 GHz are made on two instruments, low-frequency telescope and medium- and high-frequency telescope. To reach the desired sensitivities, more than 4500 transition edge sensors detectors, used on both instruments, will be continuously cooled to 100 mK. The cryogenic design based on shield cooling and mechanical coolers is presented in this paper. Shield cooling will be done with passive cooling and 15 K pulse tube coolers. A single cryogenic chain will cool both instruments. A 4 K stage is cooled by a 4He Joule–Thomson cooler from Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency, pre-cooled by Stirling coolers. Multistage adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator will be optimized to provide continuous cooling at 1.75 K, 300 mK and 100 mK with 2.2 µW of cooling power on the latter stage. The performance of transition-edge sensors (TES) and their SQUID multiplexed readouts is very sensitive to ambient magnetic field and its fluctuations. In order to run ground experiments on thousands of X-ray TES microcalorimeters with a small uniform ambient magnetic field (< 1 μT, with a uniformity < 0.1 μT), we need a very low ambient field to be trapped into the superconducting magnetic shields. We have designed a sub-Kelvin test platform to reach these specifications. For this purpose, we modeled a new design for the shielding consisting of a series of different mu-metal and superconducting shields, including a niobium shield at 50 mK, a cryoperm (A4K) shield at 3 K, and a mu-metal shield at 300 K. A magnetic field coil is used to vary the local perpendicular magnetic field over the TES array. To optimize this field, we have studied a number of different field-coil designs and the impact of the different shield geometries, in order to reach the required field uniformity. We describe the construction and characterization of the 280 GHz bolometric focal plane units (FPUs) to be deployed on the second flight of the balloon-borne SPIDER instrument. These FPUs are vital to SPIDER’s primary science goal of detecting or placing an upper limit on the amplitude of the primordial gravitational wave signature in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) by constraining the B-mode contamination in the CMB from Galactic dust emission. Each 280 GHz focal plane contains a 16×16 grid of corrugated silicon feedhorns coupled to an array of aluminum-manganese transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers fabricated on 150 mm diameter substrates. In total, the three 280 GHz FPUs contain 1530 polarization-sensitive bolometers (765 spatial pixels) optimized for the low loading environment in flight and read out by time-division SQUID multiplexing. In this paper, we describe the mechanical, thermal, and magnetic shielding architecture of the focal planes and present cryogenic measurements which characterize yield and the uniformity of several bolometer parameters. The assembled FPUs have high yields, with one array as high as 95% including defects from wiring and readout. We demonstrate high uniformity in device parameters, finding the median saturation power for each TES array to be ∼3 pW at 300 mK with a less than 6% variation across each array at 1σ. These focal planes will be deployed alongside the 95 and 150 GHz telescopes in the SPIDER-2 instrument, slated to fly from McMurdo Station in Antarctica in December 2018. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ATHENA X-IFU development program foresees to build and characterize an instrument Demonstration Model (DM), in order to probe the system critical technologies before the mission adoption. In this respect, we are now developing the DM of the X-IFU Cryogenic AntiCoincidence Detector (CryoAC), which will be delivered to the Focal Plane Assembly development team for the integration with the TES array. Before the delivery, we will characterize and test the CryoAC DM in our CryoLab at INAF/IAPS. In this paper, we report the main results of the activities performed to improve our cryogenic test setup, making it suitable for the DM integration. These activities mainly consist in the development of a mechanical setup and a cryogenic magnetic shielding system, whose effectiveness has been assessed by FEM simulations and a measurement at warm. TIME is a mm-wavelength grating spectrometer array that will map fluctuations of the 157.7-μm emission line of singly ionized carbon ([CII]) during the epoch of reionization (redshift z∼ 5-9). Sixty transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers populate the output arc of each of the 32 spectrometers, for a total of 1920 detectors. Each bolometer consists of gold absorber on a ∼ 3 × 3 mm silicon nitride micro-mesh suspended near the corners by 1 × 1 × 500 μm silicon nitride legs targeting a photon-noise-dominated NEP ∼1×10-17W/Hz. Hafnium films are explored as a lower-Tc alternative to Ti (500 mK) for TIME TESs, allowing thicker support legs for improved yield. Hf Tc is shown to vary between 250 and 450 mK when varying the resident Ar pressure during deposition. Magnetic shielding designs and simulations are presented for the TIME first-stage SQUIDs. We present a magnetic cooling chain designed to have a continuous heat sink below 50 mK. It has been focused on providing a cryogen-free and autonomous operation for the users. The challenge is to provide two levels of continuous cooling in order to control the heat balance on the coldest stage. Designed for scientific research and high sensitivity cryogenic detectors applications, the prototype has been validated with a kinetic inductance detectors array. We have been developing a compact adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator, keeping ground application and future missions in mind. A salt pill fabricated in-house, a superconducting magnet with a passive magnetic shield around it, and a mechanical heat switch are mounted in a dedicated helium cryostat. The detector stage temperature is regulated by PID control of the magnet current, with a $$\mathrm{d}I/\mathrm{d}t$$ term added to compensate the temperature rise due to parasitic heat. The temperature fluctuation of the detector stage is 1-2 $$\upmu $$ Krms, and the hold time was extended by about 15 % thanks to the $$\mathrm{d}I/\mathrm{d}t$$ term. Bundle shields of the harnesses between the cryostat and the analog electronics boxes were connected to the chassis at both ends, and the analog electronics boxes were grounded to the cryostat through the bundle shields. This reduced the readout noise to 16 pA/ $$\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$$ in the 10-60 kHz range. Using this system, an energy resolution of 3.8 $$\pm $$ 0.2 eV (FWHM) was achieved at 5.9 keV. We are developing a compact adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator (ADR) dedicated for TES X-ray microcalorimeter operation. Ferric ammonium alum (FAA) was grown in a stainless-steel container in our laboratory. This salt pill was mounted together with a superconducting magnet and a conventional mechanical heat-switch in a dedicated helium cryostat. Using this system, we achieved $${<}40$$ mK and a hold time of $${>}20$$ h below 100 mK. Initially, we used a 3 mm thick silicon steel shield around the ADR magnet and a Nb/Cryoperm double shield around the detector. However, this silicon steel shield allowed a $${\sim }50$$ mT field at the detector position when a full field (3 T) was applied, and caused the Nb shield around the detector to trap a magnetic field. The observed transition curve of a TES was broad ( $${\sim }20$$ mK) compared to $${\sim }4$$ mK obtained in a dilution refrigerator. By increasing the shield thickness to 12 mm, transition width was improved to $${\sim }4$$ mK, which suggests that the shields work as expected. When we operated a TES microcalorimeter, energy resolution was $$14.5\pm 0.7$$ eV (FWHM) at 5.9 keV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
