Thermal analysis of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers is commonly employed to assess the chemical and physical changes occurring during the pre-oxidation stage. However, in actual pre-oxidation processes, PAN fibers are stretched to a certain extent (approximately 5%) to prevent fiber shrinkage. Consequently, the pre-oxidation process of PAN fiber is influenced not only by temperature and atmosphere but also by the stretching tension. In this study, two types of PAN fiber samples with different crystal structures were utilized alongside four different processing methods (PAN powder, unfixation, physical fixation, and chemical fixation) to generate three degrees of fixed stretching. These included PAN powder and unfixed PAN fiber samples (without fixation tension), physically fixed PAN fiber with relatively weak fixation tension, and chemically fixed PAN fiber with strong fixation. Through a comparison of these samples, it was observed that the fixation tension aided in preserving the crystal structure during the heating process, significantly reducing the cyclization rate of the PAN fibers. The cyclization reaction rate of PAN fiber A, initially at 85% without any fixation, decreased to 66% after physical fixation and dropped to 56% after chemical fixation. For PAN fibers with distinct crystal morphologies, the impact of the fixation tension was more prominent for PAN fibers with larger crystal sizes and lower orientation. Among the many material performance properties of vulcanized elastomers for tire tread application, rolling resistance and wet traction are particularly important since both greatly impact fuel efficiency and traction of a vehicle. Rolling resistance and wet traction are generally negatively correlated, i.e., with the increase in rolling resistance of a tire, its wet traction decreases. Silica nanofillers are often used for achieving the desired balance of wet traction and rolling resistance. However, the high cost of silica limits its wide spread application. In this research we studied the effects of using fillers with different aspect ratios (calculated by dividing the long dimension of a filler by its short dimension) on the performance of vulcanized styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), a common rubber for tire tread application. Three high aspect ratio fillers were used: aragonite calcium carbonate, wollastonite and carbon nanofiber. For comparison purpose, spherical silica filler was also included. We found that the high aspect ratio fillers were efficient in improving the wet traction and rolling resistance as well as enhancing the mechanical energy dissipation of SBR. Among the three high aspect ratio fillers studied, wollastonite provided the best wet traction and rolling resistance balance due to its high aspect ratio and compatibility with the base rubber. The mechanical properties of polycarbonate film embedded with carbon nanofibers were studied based on plasma surface modification of carbon nanofibers by the use of polystyrene. The nanofiber surfaces were modified by various processing conditions including plasma polymerization power, nanofiber concentration, and ultrasonication time. The tensile strength and Young's modulus of the carbon nanofiber‐polycarbonate composites were then measured. The mechanical behavior of the composite was found to be affected by dispersion of the nanofibers. Higher plasma power resulted in improved mechanical strength. A maximum strength (10% increase) was achieved at a low concentration (1 wt.%) of nanofibers. The optimization of ultrasonication time indicated that the maximum strength occurred at different times for the composites with different concentrations of the modified carbon nanofibers. The shear-induced crystallization behavior of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) nanocomposite melt containing modified carbon nanofibers (MCNFs) was investigated by rheo-SAXS (small-angle X-ray scattering) and rheo-WAXD (wide-angle X-ray diffraction) techniques using synchrotron radiation. Under quiescent conditions, the nucleating effect of MCNFs on crystallization of iPP was pronounced and the system exhibited a remarkably low saturation point (ca. 0.05 wt% of MCNF). In-situ SAXS and WAXD results showed the development of shear-induced crystalline structures and lamellar morphology in nanocomposite melts. Under the same shear conditions, the filled system exhibited notably faster kinetics compared with the unfilled system. The oriented crystalline fraction was found to decrease with the MCNF loading, indicating the competition between oriented crystals (induced by shear) and unoriented crystals (due to the nucleating effect of MCNF). At the early stages of crystallization, the amount of the oriented crystals increased with the MCNF concentration, suggesting that the nanofiller hindered the motion of polymer chains after the cessation of flow resulting in the delayed relaxation of stretched polymer segments. A variety of semicrystalline isotactic polypropylene composites containing carbon nanotubes and nanofibers were produced by melt and solution techniques. The effect of the nanofillers on the crystallization process was investigated by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. Under the processing conditions applied in this study, the surfaces of the carbon nanomaterials act as nucleation sites in bulk samples and highly oriented composite films.
