Cingulata (Mammalia, Xenarthra) is one of the most conspicuous clades in the Cenozoic fossil record of South America, largely due to the high abundance of disarticulated osteoderms in most fossiliferous sites of the continent. Nevertheless, the fragmentary nature of this material hinders the identification of extinct taxa, particularly in groups that do not exhibit great shape diversity in the ornamentation of the osteoderms, as occurs in armadillos of the clade Dasypodini (long-nosed armadillos). Methodologies that quantify shape variability could offer an alternative strategy for identifying these fragmentary fossil remains. In the present study, we apply geometric morphometric analysis to assess shape variation of Dasypodini osteoderms. First, we evaluate previous referrals of two isolated late Miocene osteoderms to Dasypus, one identified as Dasypus sp. from the Guanaco Formation (Jujuy province, Argentina) and the other identified as D. neogaeus from the Ituzaingó Formation (Entre Ríos province, Argentina). Second, we evaluate the identification of a disarticulated osteoderm from the middle Miocene of Brazil to Anadasypus sp. nov.?. Our results distinguish two main generic clusters, Plesiodasypus + Anadasypus and Dasypus + Propraopus, supporting previous referral of disarticulated osteoderms from Jujuy and Entre Ríos to the genus Dasypus. This confirms the extension of the biochron of Dasypus by at least 3 million years, from the early Pliocene to the late Miocene. Ctenomys (tuco-tucos) is one of the most speciose genera of mammals, and the number of species that compose it continues to increase. Of the 65 species currently recognized for the genus, 15% have been described in the last 10 years. In this work, based on morphological and molecular evidence, we describe a new species of tuco-tuco for Central Argentina. This new species inhabits stony soils in the foothills of Sierras Grandes in Córdoba province and is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of anatomical characters, including a unique morphology of the posterolateral extension of the palatine. The molecular phylogeny based on the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene showed that this new species does not belong to any species complex described for Ctenomys. On the contrary, this new taxon shows a high genetic divergence with the rest of the species and species groups of Ctenomys and was recovered as an independent lineage within the phylogeny of the genus. This finding increases the richness of Ctenomys to 66 species. Our results highlight the need to increase the geographic sampling of studies in this genus to achieve a more complete understanding of its diversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Glyptodonts (Xenarthra, Cingulata) are one of the most amazing Cenozoic South American mammals, with some terminal forms reaching ca. two tons. The Paleogene record of glyptodonts is still poorly known, although some of their diversification is observable in Patagonian Argentina. Since the early and middle Miocene (ca. 19–13 Ma), two large clades can be recognized in South America. One probably has a northern origin (Glyptodontinae), while the other one, called the "austral clade", is interpreted to have had an austral origin, with the oldest records represented by the "Propalaehoplophorinae" from the late early Miocene of Patagonian Argentina. In this scenario, the extra-Patagonian radiations are still poorly known, despite their importance for understanding the late Miocene and Pliocene diversity. Here, we carry out a comprehensive revision of late Miocene (Chasicoan Stage/Age) glyptodonts of central Argentina (Buenos Aires and San Juan provinces). Our results show that, contrary to what is traditionally assumed, it was a period of very low diversity, with only one species recognized in this region, Kelenkura castroi gen et sp. nov. Our phylogenetic analysis shows that this species represents the sister taxon of the remaining species of the "austral clade", representing the first branch of the extra-Patagonian radiation. Recently, the basal beds of the lower section of the Lumbrera Formation have been referred to the early Eocene (Ypresian) based on the identification of a succession of hyperthermal events globally dated between 52 and 55 Ma. Nevertheless, this section have also been referred to the middle Eocene (Lutetian) based on the 'evolutionary stage' of its fossil mammals. In this contribution, we present a new 238U-206Pb isochron age (46.2 Ma) obtained from samples taken on various independent points across paleosol and matrix positioned at the top of the lower section of the Lumbrera Formation. The new age is consistent with the hyperthermal scheme and constrains the deposition of the lower section of the Lumbrera Fm. between 55–46.2 Ma. In this new geochronological framework, we present one of the most ancient cingulate assemblages from America, recorded during the early Eocene hyperthermal. The specimens involved were recovered from the lowest levels of the lower section of the Lumbrera Formation at Los Cardones National Park, Calchaquí Valleys, Salta Province, Argentina. This cingulate assemblage is formed by the armadillos Pucatherium parvum, a species widely distributed in the Eocene of northwestern Argentina and a new taxon, Noatherium emilioi, gen. et sp. nov. In this new geochronological framework, the taxonomic composition and morphological variations observed in the two species described here and their probably contemporaneous Riostegotherium yanei from the Itaboraí basin (Brazil) support an early diversification of the Cingulata during the Paleocene, and reinforce an intertropical origin for the group. Protypotherium (Mammalia, Notoungulata, lnteratheriinae) is a well-known and very diverse genus of extinct native ungulates of South America, widely distributed from southern to middle latitudes of Argentina, Chile, and Bolivia. This genus exhibits distinctive species throughout the Miocene to the beginning of the Pliocene that display an interesting size pattern. The large sample of specimens studied during several years of research allows us to analyze the shape and size of upper and lower molars for nine species of Protypotherium, in order to test the hypothesis of reduction of size ranges preserving a general tooth morphology as a response to climate deterioration, documented in South America by a marked reduction of temperature that occurred during Miocene times. Elliptic Fourier analyses were used to capture the shape of the occlusal morphology and the centroid size was also retained for subsequent analyses. Our results demonstrate that: 1) a similar morphological tooth pattern is observed among all species; 2) tooth shape variation is not associated with a change in size; and 3) there is a tendency to increase the size and decrease the number of species. This striking pattern could be correlated with a global trend to lower temperatures, which indicates a deterioration of paleoenvironmental conditions. A conservative tooth pattern, together with an increase of size and a reduction in number of species were the main evolutionary and ecological tendencies accounted in Protypotherium from the early to late Miocene-beginning of the Pliocene, which were accompanied by a latitudinal displacement from Patagonia to northern areas at the end of the Miocene. Dental and craniomandibular data have been predominantly used to infer relationships among mylodontid ground sloths. Recent studies indicate the osteology of the manus also provides useful data to test phylogenetic relationships in mylodontine mylodontids. Here we provide new comparative data from the study of the manus of a member of the Scelidotheriinae, Scelidotherium Owen, 1839, based on specimens from the Province of Córdoba that provide information on the variation and systematic relationships of the genus. The Scelidotherium material from the Province of Córdoba in central Argentina presents several morphological differences with material of the genus from northwestern Argentina. The manus of Scelidotherium shares several traits with Catonyx Ameghino, 1891, but not with Valgipes Gervais, 1874. These include: trapezoid with a sharp ridge on the articular surface for metacarpal II; magnum with at least half of articular surface for metacarpal II located on the dorsal half of the medial and distal aspects of the bone; metacarpal II with a notch on the axial border of its distal articular surface; and ungual process of the distal phalanx of the second digit markedly dorsopalmarly flattened. A phylogenetic analysis that includes osteological characters of the manus indicates that within the family Scelidotheriinae, Scelidotherium is more closely related to Catonyx than to Valgipes or Proscelidodon gracillimus Rovereto, 1914. We report here the first amphilestid triconodont from the Jurassic of South America. The specimen, a single isolated molariform, was found at the Queso Rallado locality from where a growing mammalian fauna is known (including a triconodontid, two australosphenidans, and an as yet undescribed allotherian). The specimen, interpreted as a left lower tooth, presents five mesiodistally aligned, fairly symmetrical cusps, and is recognized as the type of a new taxon, Condorodon spanios. The phylogenetic analysis recovers Condorodon as a member of the clade Amphilestheria, closely related to Tendagurodon janenschi, an amphilestid triconodont from the Late Jurassic of Tanzania. Condorodon spanios is only distantly related to Argentoconodon fariasorum, the other triconodont known from Queso Rallado quarry. The phylogenetic position of Condorodon spanios points to the origin and diversification of amphilestherians during the Early Jurassic in a paleogeographical setting that allowed wide dispersion of these forms and argues, at least from the mammalian evidence, against a highly provincialized Pangaea.
