Calculation and characterization of the whole process of internal microscopic damage to surface damage in red-bed soft rock is a theoretical research difficulty and an urgent need for engineering safety protection. However, the current study cannot accurately and directly correlate internal and external damage. Therefore, in this paper, a coupled tensor–DEM–FEM model is proposed to deal with surface damage by indoor triaxial test digital image processing (DIC), internal damage by FJM acoustic emission study, and internal and external damage by moment tensor correlation. The study demonstrates that the whole process damage process of the red-bed soft rock peak front can be divided into six distinct phases, with early damage beginning with the elastic phase; the local strain divergence value begins to spiral out of control during the period of crack acceleration development; the overall acoustic emission intensity distribution is in the range of [−8.5, −6.3] in two dimensions and in the range of [−11, −9] in three dimensions; the R were between −40 and 40, which corresponded to the results of the indoor tests. A model has been developed that allows a direct reflection of the whole damage process. The method can be used to better understand the disaster mechanism and guide engineering practice. The self-balanced pressure arch theory is an important basis for excavation support in karst caves, but it is difficult to quantify the empirical theory in coastal areas. In addition, the rheological effects of karst strata could pose a hazard to engineering. Therefore, this study investigated the rheological mechanism under the self-balanced pressure arch effect, and we proposed a mesoscopic unit rheological model for clay minerals in a water-rich environment. With the discrete element method (DEM), we realized the numerical modeling of the rheological model. Then, the proposed model is validated by a case study of foundation excavation in the coastal karst area of China. The mesoscopic mechanical characteristics of caves considering the influence of pressure arch are analyzed. The results show that the self-balance of the caverns mainly lies in the mesoscopic mineral strength and local stress. With the rheological controlled model, the final predicted convergent deformation of the foundation has an error of less than 10% compared with the field monitoring data. In this study, we can quantitively describe the self-balance effect of the pressure arch surrounding the caves and reveal the rheological mechanism. This study presents a multi-effect coupling model to optimize the design of a geosynthetic-reinforced pile-supported embankment (GRPSE) considering the coupling effects of soil arching, membranes, and pile–soil interaction on a coastal highway. The developed model could optimize the design of the GRPSE to fulfill the design and construction requirements at a relatively low project cost. This was achieved by adjusting the critical factors that govern the settlement of GRPSEs, such as pile spacing, tensile stiffness of geosynthetic reinforcement (GR), arrangement of piles, pile cap size, and cushion thickness. The model predictions were validated by a series of field tests using a range of geotechnical sensors. The results show that model predictions agreed with experimental measurements reasonably well. In addition, the results indicate that in comparison to a square arrangement of piles, a triangle net arrangement can decrease the differential settlement of pile soil. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that a change in the GR's tensile stiffness has little impact on the settlement of GRPSEs. The prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) is an essential means to mitigate the settlement of soft soil foundations in coastal areas of South China. The commonly used elastoplastic analytical method cannot directly reflect the interaction of different PVDs and the resulting displacement of soft soil. At the same time, these elastoplastic analysis and numerical simulation methods are greatly influenced by the values adopted for rock and soil material parameters. In this paper, we present a stochastic medium model that can directly reflect the interaction of different PVDs and the resulting displacement of soft soil. It is not affected by the characteristics of rock and soil themselves and can also reflect the actual deformation process of soft soil. According to engineering practice, the settlement curves of soft soil foundations in coastal areas of South China with PVDs exhibited distinct normal distribution characteristics, which was consistent with the description of settlement by the stochastic medium model. Hence, based on the stochastic medium model, this paper analyzed the settlement mechanism of PVDs and established a stochastic medium model for the settlement calculation of PVDs. A function for the soft soil foundation in the coastal area of South China cross-section settlement curve was presented by back analysis of the PVD model. We chose the stochastic medium model based on this methodology to explore the interaction between different PVDs. The above models were then applied to an expressway in South China. Comparing actual settlement monitoring values to calculated values obtained with the PVD model, the error between the two models was less than 15%. This research provides a new settlement calculation method of PVDs in soft soil foundations in the coastal area of South China and a new basis for designing soft soil foundations. Granite residual soil is a common engineering material, and its mechanical properties are of great importance to engineering safety. This kind of soil presents obvious structural characteristics, and many researchers have emphasized the significance of its structural features. According to previous experiments, from a macroscopic perspective, many researchers have investigated the structural relationship between undisturbed and remolded soils, but few studies have considered it in the mesoscopic aspect. Adopting DEM (a mesomechanical simulation method), we can study how the structure affects the mechanical process between undisturbed and remolded soil. Therefore, this paper combines DEM with laboratory tests to study the structural characteristic correlation between undisturbed and remolded soil. The results indicate that a weak cohesion effect exists in undisturbed soil, and the damage of weak cohesion elements accompanies the failure process. Weak cohesion elements in undisturbed soil cause inhomogeneities in deformation, stress state, and damage accumulation, which ultimately causes differences in strength curves. This paper explains the mechanism of the structural effect on mechanical evolution from a mesomechanical perspective. Pervasive, unavoidable and uncontrollable creep failure generated in soft-rock engineering occasionally happens and therefore attracts extensive attention recently. However, due to soft rock's multi-factor creep mechanism, it is still difficult to simulate the full-stage creep with the Distinct Element Method (DEM). In this study, we proposed an improved simulation method based on the classical Burger's model and the Parallel Bonded model in Particle Flow Code (PFC). We apply the abovementioned models together to simulate the full-stage creep process in soft rock. The proposed process has considered the mesoscopic mechanical characteristics of DEM carefully and finally resulted in a parallel physical model, which is called Burger's Bonded model in this paper. The DEM simulation test using Burger's Bonded model was designed to compare with experiments. The experiments include a normal creep test and a uniaxial loading test with prefabricated cracks. In contrast to experimental results, the numerical results show that the average error during the whole creep process is less than 3%; the stress–strain curves and crack development process show great agreement. It is also found that the wing crack coalescence in soft rock is independent of the prefabricated crack angle, propagating with a fixed dip angle. The results show that the numerical method proposed in this paper can simulate the multi-factor-caused full stage (attenuated, steady, accelerated) creep process of soft rock in DEM, which provides new insights for theoretical research and engineering design. Geocells are increasingly used in engineering applications, but the design of riverbank slope reinforcements that use only geocells limits reinforcement performance. Moreover, the design and use of anti-slide piles with geocells are mainly based on experiences that are unsupported by theoretical models. In this paper, by combining the confinement effect and vertical action mechanism of geocells, the horizontal friction mechanism of the geocell layer and the vertical support mechanism of piles, a theoretical model of riverbank slope reinforced by anti-slide piles with geocells was constructed. In addition, to describe the mechanical behavior of a riverbank slope reinforced by anti-slide piles with geocells, the slip-resisting mechanism of the anti-slide pile with interaction between geocells and their internal filler is considered in the model. Furthermore, to investigate the influence of changes in water level on riverbank slope stability, the developed model takes into account settlement, lateral displacement, pile bending moment and pile axial force. The model predications were validated by the field measurement data. The results from a series of parametric studies show that the use of anti-slide pile and geocells can effectively reduce the settlement and the lateral displacement of a riverbank slope. To mitigate the risk of structural failure in coastal engineering caused by soft marine soil creep, this study presents a coupled macroscopic and mesoscopic creep model of soft marine soil to predict long-term deformation behavior of the soil. First, the mesoscopic characteristics of soft marine soil (e.g., pore, particle, and morphological characteristics) under different external pressures were obtained using a scanning electron microscope. Then, both the mesoscopic and macroscopic characteristics of soil were quantified using directional probability entropy and then used as inputs to develop the model. The model predictions agree with the experimental data. In addition, the experimental results indicate linear negative correlations between porosity and pore ratio with stress—the relationships between the fractal dimension of pore distribution and probability entropy of particle orientation under stress are generally nonlinear. Further, results of sensitivity analysis indicate that the probability entropy of particle orientation is one of the most critical parameters governing long-term creep deformation behavior of soft marine soil. The rates of chemical reactions are highly dependent on temperature, meaning that the actual geological rock mass is affected by different temperatures. Only when the temperature effect is considered can the mechanism of the influence of temperature on the interaction between water and rock be further understood. It was found that the condition of turbulent flow is more likely to promote the softening of red-bed sandstone than the conditions of laminar flow and static water in an experimental study on the softening effects of different flow patterns on red-bed sandstone. Therefore, based on a multi-functional self-circulating open channel hydraulic test system, this paper designs and completes equal volume saturated tests of red-bed sandstone at low temperature (1 °C), medium temperature (23 °C), and high temperature (45 °C) under the turbulent conditions of three equal temperature gradients. The chemical action of the circulating solution in water flow at different temperatures, the propagation of micro-cracks in rock and the changes in mechanical indexes are discussed. The influence laws and mechanisms of the different temperatures on the softening of red-bed sandstone in turbulent flow are revealed. The results show that low-temperature flow can inhibit the softening of red-bed sandstone in the range of 1–45 °C. With the increase in water flow temperature, the development degrees of micro-structures and the mechanical damage of the corresponding rock become more notable. That is, temperature affects the physical and chemical water-rock interactions and then changes the internal structure of rock, thus affecting the softening and failure processes of red-bed sandstone. The study provides a theoretical basis for the further investigation of the softening laws and mechanisms of other red layered soft rocks by temperature under turbulent conditions. Red-bed soft rock easily softens and disintegrates when it comes into contact with water, which is the main factor restricting the application of soft rock as an engineering filler. Therefore, research on the influence of seawater on soft rock softening has great significance for the application of soft rock in marine engineering. To examine the softening mechanism of soft rock under seawater conditions, two kinds of soft rock softening experiments, as well as ion inhibition tests of soft rock softening, were performed under seawater and pure water conditions, and the results were compared. The variation in the soft rock composition, the deformation and failure characteristics of soft rock under the influence of sea water, and the variation in main cations in the softening process of soft rock are examined successively; the influences of different ions on soft rock softening are further analysed. Based on the analyses, the softening mechanism and control method of soft rock under sea water conditions are expounded. The study showed that soft rock softening was inhibited by seawater, which decreased the softening degree of soft rock. The main cations in seawater had an inhibitory effect on soft rock softening, and the order of inhibition was Ca2+ > Mg2+ > Na+. According to the inhibitory effect of ions on soft rock softening, we propose that seawater or calcium salt should be added to reduce the softening of soft rock in soft rock engineering and improve the mechanical strength of soft rock; in addition, soft rock can be considered a raw material in marine engineering. The experimental results have great significance for studies of the disintegration mechanism and inhibitory rules of soft rock under the influence of seawater and provide a theoretical basis for the application of soft rock in marine engineering, such as in artificial reef engineering and coastal dike engineering. As a typical representative of red beds, the softening and disintegration of red sandstone when it encounters water is an important cause of initiated engineering disasters. However, research on the softening of this kind of rock has mainly focused on the still water–rock interaction. There is still a lack of quantitative analysis and a mechanistic explanation for the basic experimental study of dynamic water–rock interactions. Therefore, based on the independently developed multifunctional open channel hydraulic test equipment, the still water was used as the reference by designing the saturation test of red sandstone under two typical flow patterns—laminar flow and turbulent flow—and combined with a three-dimensional numerical simulation; specifically, the chemical, physical and mechanical effects of different flow patterns on the softening of red sandstone are discussed, and the mechanism of the influence of different flow patterns on the softening of red sandstone was further revealed. The results show that under different flow patterns, as the flow of water increased, the alkalinity of the circulating solution became stronger, the speed of stabilization of the ion concentration became faster, the development of the microscopic structure of the corresponding rock became higher and the decrease in mechanical strength became greater. The flow state affects the processes of rock softening and breaking by acting on the rock from the three aspects of chemistry, physics and mechanics. The study makes up for the deficiency of the quantitative analysis index of rock softening under dynamic water conditions and further improves the influence mechanism of different flow patterns on soft rock softening in red beds under dynamic water conditions. This research also provides a specific method for the protection of estuarine and coastal bank slopes with rich red-bed soft rock dissection under different flow patterns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
