Background Nonhuman primates are raised in large numbers in research centers and zoos. Reproductive monitoring is required to improve breeding performances. Ultrasonography is a safe method to determine gestational age and to estimate the date of parturition. However only few data are available in nonhuman primates. Methods Fetal biometric data were obtained throughout pregnancy on four African primate species, namely chimpanzee, gorilla, mandrill and patas monkey. Measurements included biparietal diameter, transverse abdominal diameter, femur and humerus length, external interorbital diameter, and fetal heart rate. Curves established from these data were compared with previously published data in chimpanzees and gorillas and with those for humans and other closely related primate species. Results The curves for the different hominids were very similar, while those for mandrills more closely resembled baboons and data for patas monkeys were comparable to those for macaques. Conclusions These data, by providing a tool to evaluate precise gestational age, will be useful for centers raising these four primate species.

Sera from 517 laboratory-housed nonhuman primates representing five genera and from 13 laboratory workers were examined for the presence of neutralizing antibodies to SA12 virus. The antibody prevalences were as follows: baboons, 66%; patas and vervet monkeys, 24%; macaques, 8%, and chimpanzees, 2%. The serum of one laboratory worker had antibodies. These results suggest that SA12 virus is a common infection of nonhuman primates in laboratory colonies, especially baboons.

Free-ranging patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) from El Guayacan island, Puerto Rico, were surveyed to establish values for the hemogram, serum biochemicals, calcium, and phosphorus. Results were tabulated for males and nonpregnant/nonlactating, pregnant, and lactating females. A summary of blood values from previous studies on captive patas monkeys was also tabulated for comparison.

Twenty-four fetoscopy procedures were performed on 22 monkeys (19 Macaca mulatta, one M. fascicularis, two Erythrocebus patas) with gestational ages ranging from 66 to 145 days. Insertion of the fetoscope without ultrasound guidance was easy in 14 and difficult in ten procedures. Amniotic fluid exchange with normal saline, to improve visualization, was successful in eight of 13 procedures. Fetal blood sampling was successful in four of nine attempts. Nine monkeys aborted within 17 days of the fetoscopy, the remaining 13 went to term or were used in other research protocols. Major complications included maternal hemorrhage into the amniotic fluid, inability to enter the amniotic cavity, and abortion. Maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein following fetoscopy was not a useful indicator of subsequent abortion.

The bushbaby (Galago crassicaudatus), patas (Erythrocebus patas), and grivet (Cercopithecus aethiops) have been evaluated as hosts in experimental schistosomiasis haematobia. Individual hosts demonstrated considerable variation in host-parasite relationships. E. patas is suggested as a host for continuing investigations in Schistosoma haematobium infections, based upon its moderate susceptibility to infection and a moderate potential for pathological involvement of the urogenital system.

Data from 338 blood samples of 31 patas monkeys is presented to show the normal hematolgoic development from birth to one year of age, and is compared to 120 samples from normal adults. Marked changes in hematocrit, hemoglobin, red cell numbers, and leukocyte distribution which occurred during the first month were followed by a slow progression to adult values. Body weight data is also presented which shows a linear growth rate during the first year of life.
